The talk about Boise State in the UVU thread got me thinking about the unseeded era* wrestlers who said to hell with the seeds, I got this. Who were the unseeded wrestlers to go undefeated at the NCAA Tournament? I am glad you asked. There were nine of these titans of optimism and over-achievement, starting with Oklahoma's David McGuire in 1967 and ending with Oklahoma State's Mark Branch in 1994. These wrestlers were all participating in 8 and 12 seed tournaments. The 16 seed era was very short, lasting only five years, and did not produce any unseeded champions. The "We Don't Need No Stinkin' Badges" (or Seeds) Banditos: But what of the teams? Which teams consistently produced from the unseeded portion of the bracket? We can answer the question at least two ways. Based on sheer volume, Oklahoma put a whopping 30 wrestlers on the podium without the benefit of a seed. Iowa State, Iowa and Oklahoma State round out our top four. But they are also four of the programs with the most wrestlers in the tournament (sorry PSU fans, but they just failed at putting US on the podium. I blame Cael Sanderson in spite of the obvious objection). The Seeds Don't Matter Schools: The other (better?) way to look at this is based on rate. How often did a school/coach get their guys over the psychological hump of being told you do not deserve a seed? The Han Solo "Never Tell Me The Odds" Schools: How fitting that a faith-based school sits atop the list. Maybe I should rename it The George Michael "You Gotta Have Faith" Schools? * I am defining the unseeded era as 1967 - 2018. In 1967 we had 8 seeded wrestlers for the first time and in 2018 we had unseeded wrestlers for the last time.6 points

I got to work out with Matt Reiss - might have more than than normal share of neanderthal in that gene pool. Was not all that suprised when he made a deep run - but not saying it was not a surprise that he won it.3 points

The Mighty Dukes of JMU had 2 All-Americans total before the program dropped. Both were unseeded. Brian Kurlander finished 8th in '87 (beat the 8 seed and 9 seed to make quarters then beat 10 seed in blood round), Mike Coyle placed 8th in 2000 (little easier road by seed, beat 6 and 12 on the backside on way to AA).2 points

As I mentioned in a thread regarding the ban on Russia - if the IOC had banned them for the rampant cheating during Sochi it wouldn't be tying itself into knots trying to ban them for these Paris games - the solution here is simple. The next time an Iranian refuses to compete against an Israeli, the IOC should throw all of the Iranians in that sport out of the games and tell Iran if it happens in another sport the entire country will be banned from Paris and LA. I don't care what your politics are. The Olympics are supposed to be about sport and above politics. (I know, I know). The Iranians are the ones refusing to compete due to politics so they are to blame. This nonsense has now spread to other countries and other sports (judo, with the lack of sportsmanship shown to Israeli competitors) and it has to stop.2 points

Yeah and we think NCAA wrestling has it bad. There are only 12 D1 schools with men’s gymnastics2 points

Those dudes have an insane combination of strength, flexibility, balance and grit. They are very impressive to watch. I have to think many of these guys would make great wrestlers.1 point

Yes, it’s kind of funny how the “there are only two genders” crowd are being forced to admit that’s not quite true. They are also learning the difference between gender and sex, too, I’d hope. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

I would suggest that the chaos was from media and the Ds pouring fuel on the fires Trump admittedly started. But all the chaos had nothing to do with the policies he implemented that were good for the country. mspart1 point

stop being ridiculous. Mile Pence was experienced and articulated his policy platform. what the ef does this even mean? i don't think you know what DEI is despite it being literal. you're not wrong on this. Kamala was chosen for IDENTITY reasons; not efficacy. IT'S THE ENTIRE POINT! White men are not DEI, you dolt. by definition. Kamala has no platform, no real experience, didn't go thru a primary this time, in a previous primary dropped out after 2 minutes b/c she polled so bad, called biden a racist and then was picked for VP after biden said 'i will be choosing a woman of color'. you don't know what DEI is.1 point

And if it comes out that somehow this was all a conspiracy and she's actually a trans woman who was born a man, then I'll change my mind. I don't think that's likely. She's been competing as a woman her whole career, which goes back a decade. It's not even her first Olympics. She didn't medal in 2020.1 point

Then Mike Pence was a DEI hire. He was chosen specifically because he was a conservative, white evangelical and they wanted to shore up that base. Joe Biden would be a DEI hire because he was chosen to be a moderate white VP to settle the fears of the Israel lobby and the credit card industry. This is, by definition, a popularity contest. Your ability to identify with key constituencies is a qualification. We all know you would never call a white man with the exact same resume a "DEI" hire.1 point

That's always possible and that's why they test, but she hasn't popped for those. The reality is, if she were truly a "man", she would have been dominant for a long time. Put her against a man right now, and you'll see that she's not.1 point

As long as she wasn't taking PEDs to raise it, yes. The sports are not divided by testosterone level (that would *actually* allow some men to compete in women's). It's based off the body you were born with. The trans athlete issue has muddled this entire thing. Nobody would blink an eye at this 20 years ago because we all intuitively understand what a woman is. A woman born as a woman who lived her whole life as a woman is a woman. Biological advantage is the entire basis of athletic competition. Being a woman with high testosterone is the same type of advantage as being a basketball player who is 7'0. It's rare and allows you to excel.1 point

My daughter quit gymnastics at 15. Strong as an ox. Level 2 of 10 technical skill and 10 of 10 strength. Conditioning maybe 5 of 10. She went about 20 - 10 each of her first two years without having a clue what to do. Went from practicing 20 hours to 25 hours weekly for gymnastics to about 5 hours weekly for wresting. She can frustrate the heck out of kids with better skill that can't navigate her strength. In high school, I had two former men gymnasts on my wrestling team. Both boys were mini Greek statues. One made top 8 at state with little technical skill. The other had youth wrestling experience and medaled multiple times.1 point

Maybe some would be outraged, but probably not most. The US did kill Bin Laden and many others involved in the planning of the attack. KSM they just had other purposes for (source of intel for CIA)-the consequences of which make putting him on trial in a death penalty case impossible. 2003 was a different time though, and we were barely a year removed from 9/11, so it’s hard to second guess the way he was handled. I’m sure Obama, Trump, and Biden would all have loved to have seen him put on trial, but 16 years after announcing it was something they wanted to do, it still hasn’t happened.1 point

Yowza. The Australian women's 4x200 free team had the fastest prelim time by almost 7 seconds. And they did it without the two fastest 200 free swimmers ever, who also happen to be the gold and silver medalists in these games. They could conceivably go 8 seconds faster in the final.1 point

Yes, that is one way to interpret this. 1. Do you support ensuring everyone has the same outcomes? (Kamala does) This vides explains how we should treat people as unequal so they get the same outcomes 2. Do you support making all illegal aliens as American citizens? (Kamala does) Kamala supports an eight-year path to citizenship for the ~11 million people living in the U.S. without legal status. 3. Do you support elections that includes non citizen voting? (Kamala does) Isidewith.com says "yes" for Kamala. Looking into the reference, the quote does not directly support that her answer is yes. This raises doubt to how isidewith picks answers. It is possible that additional thought is from an inferrment of being anti Voter ID, pro immigration rights, along with the general Democrat responses of 'yes.' https://www.isidewith.com/candidates/kamala-harris/policies/electoral/right-of-foreigners-to-vote 4. Do you support freedom to choose abortion for the entire duration of the pregnancy? (Kamala does) She refuses to answer the question about viability. She does not support bills that define viability. https://justfacts.votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/120012/kamala-harris/2/abortion For example, Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/3275 Other Democrats like RFK JR have been more clear with their late term support. Has done some backtracking but here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofgEsYMapcA&t=226s 5. Do you support defunding police? (Kamala does) 6. Do you support foreign interference in other's affairs -- war, etc.? (Kamala does) "The United States will support Ukraine for as long as it takes." "Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate cease-fire for at least the next six weeks." RFK JR on Kamala's track record. 7. Do you support higher taxes to increase subsidies for loan forgiveness and higher benefit payout for illegal aliens and citizens? (Kamala does) https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamminsky/2024/07/25/kamala-harris-touts-student-loan-forgiveness-for-5-million-borrowers-warns-of-threats-to-programs/ https://taxfoundation.org/blog/kamala-harris-tax-proposals-2024/ 8. Do you support teaching critical race theory in schools? (Kamala does) https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-florida-desantis-education-9ccbeac59d1f8289e1d8c9bccbff85a9 9. Do you support censoring speech? (Kamala does) Isidewith did not have a reference for Kamala and defaulted to her voters primary answer "No, freedom of speech laws should only protect you from criticizing the government." She has made statements that support censorship. 10. Do you support banning guns? (Kamala does) 11. Do you support biological males beating up females in boxing? (Kamala does) isidewith shows that Kamala supporters believe transgender athletes should be allowed to compete against athletes that differ from their assigned sex at birth. This is how isidewith marked Kamala as a 'yes.' In follow up research, Kalama is 100% for rainbow rights (no issue, people have rights)... but cannot find an direct statement for or against supporting XYs competing against XX in sports.1 point

What’s interesting about gymnastics is technique has to be as close to perfect as possible. Your legs are bent or not parallel you get points off. I remember how much my wrestling coaches used to emphasize technique over strength at a young age when you are building your muscle memory. If you drill it wrong at first it’s much harder to relearn the right way. But obviously there are still guys that can reach a pretty high level in the sport relying more on strength and making technical mistakes. I think gymnastics is much less forgiving in that respect.1 point
-
No doubt they have many physical attributes that could lead to wrestling success. What they are doing is essentially drilling technique by themselves.1 point

Am I imagining things, or has Flo had progressively fewer boots on the ground since their Beijing coverage? I just remember hours of behind the scenes looks, interviews, training vids, etc. In fact, it seems like they had more content of Russian Nationals back then than they have for the Olympics now. Maybe, the content has just moved to social media?1 point

Not only is Iran forfeiting not required, it is also against the entire spirit of the games, and those who engage in it should not be enabled to continue to compete on the international stage.1 point

Would the RTC model technically get kids around roster limits? Why not bring kids in as an RTC member if a program hits their cap or a recruit wants to greyshirt. Probably won't happen, but I'm just thinking it could be a loophole.1 point

1) As a wrestling fan, not watching the pinnacle of the sport which only happens once every 4 years because you were offended by 30 seconds of a 4 hour opening ceremony seems like a weird hill to die on. But it’s a free country and you’re welcome to do that. 2) Speaking of free countries, France is one as well, which the creative director specifically pointed out in saying that the opening ceremony was not meant to mock anyone and wanted to show inclusion. Your comment implies you think there is “filth” associated with LGBT folks, which seems hypocritical when compared to your other comments about wanting to see less hate (which I agree with).1 point

you sound like a true degenerate like me I'm bound to do some women's, and I'll add some throughout the week, lol I'll post my final list the 4th, and we can slowly watch me waste 700-1000 bucks lol Kiyooka is going to make it worth it though, and of course, no matter what my mind tells me, my heart will force me to throw 50 on Chamizo. I don't think Coleman's roots run deep enough at tOSU for him to be much involved in recruiting. I'm thinking Coleman is biding his time at the RTC until another top head coaching position opens up. I'm sure tOSU knows that too, it's RTC only. It isn't like he's threatening the post-Ryan pecking order. But I have no doubt he's going to do excellent work while he's there. Guys like Mendez should benefit a ton.1 point
