  1. I will try to manage expectations as year to year but today is a great day for Hokies wrestling.

  2. WiTh HiS tRaCk ReCorD... he changed his commitment once just like countless other recruits. Get over it. He's not a Ferrari that wrestled for three different high schools and just as many colleges. Robideau, Spratley, Vega, Jamison, Mesenbrink, Kerkvliet, Jayden James, Welsh, Nagao, and how many others aren't wrestling at their original commitment? It. Happens. All. The. Time. Bassett and Miller could have gone to literally any school in the country and chose VT. Will they spend their entire careers there? Who knows in today's NCAA landscape. But the non-stop hate this kid gets is just ridiculous.

  3. 57kg: Favorites: Luke Lilledahl (u20 Gold, u20 silver, Cadet gold, Cadet silver) Luke is pretty clearly the favorite at this weight that overall is one of the weaker weights at the tournament. The Asian gold (north korea) and one of the Bronze (saliev) are not entered, Pavlov (euro gold) and Zangaladze (euro silver) are also not entered or not at 57 and I think they would have probably been Luke's toughest matches although I would have picked him in. We have gotten to see him now against more senior level international competition and its pretty clear that he is close to competing for a senior level medal. Valizadeh is someone who I thought about putting in this tier simply as a product of him being Irans senior guy for a world championship at the age of 19 and the guy at seniors this year. He also has a win over Razzade and Horst lehr which are very quality wins. However he has not shown much level of consistency and I do have some questions about how effective he can still be at 57kg. Medal Threats: Nodirbek JUMANAZAROV (Asian silver) ANKUSH (u20 Bronze) Milad Valizadeh (senior asian silver) Predictions: Gold: Luke Silver: Jumanazarov Bronze: Ankush Bronze: Valizadeh 61kg: Favorites: Jax Forrest (Senior world 5th, cadeit silver), Akito Mukaida (emperors cup bronze via win over Hosigawa world bronze meji cup silver), Levik Mikayelan (u23 euro gold many worlds under his belt defeated Nic bouzakis 10-3 last year), Fedor Baltuev( u20 bronze beating Jess mendez only loss was via fall 7-10 against amouzad also got silver at the 2023 Yarigyan losing to Abasghadzi 10-8), Reza Momeni (senior world 7th). This is a very deep field with quite a bit of variance Baltuev at a time looked like the next guy to step up for Russia being ranked as high as 5 in the world but has not wrestled a ton since 2023, at least that I have seen. Akito Mukaida has record a win as well as a tech fall loss to Hosogawa in the last 12 months who as I mentioned is a former world bronze and was leading suda 3-2 pretty for the spot on the world team this year. Mikayelan seems quite powerful and had a very good single against bouzakis and could certainly be someone that makes some noise but despite competing at 4 age level world championships has yet to medal. I think Jax is the best and most consistent guy here although if the Baltuev of old i.e when he was 20 shows up it should be a great match. Medal Threats: Jeyhun Allahverdiyev(u20 euro champ u23 euro silver) , Tolga Ozbek (wrestled Blaze pretty tough for bronze last year losing 0-5) Predictions: Gold: Jax Silver: Baltuev Bronze: Mukaida Bronze: Mikayelan 65kg: Favorites: Marcus Blaze (u20 Gold, U20 bronze, Cadet gold), Yuto Nishiuchi (2x u20 gold beating Lilledahl 5-0 1 year, fell to Ono 3-2 to make the national team in 2024 at 61kg) , Sujeet (u23 bronze, u20 bronze, Notable win over Yianni), Umidjon jalalov (Senior bronze, U20 gold, cadet gold, cadet silver), Bashir magomedov (2x u23 gold). Needless to say this weight is insane and I would argue its the deepest age level weight I have ever seen. As american fans I do not think we should look at this as medal or bust for Marcus this is 100% a senior worlds caliber weight and Marcus will likely be undersized. That said I think he can beat any of these guys. Bashir is very very good but is also probably a natural 61kg so he could be giving up a little size. Nishiuchi is probably the least known about as of late but he may very well be the best guy here and potentially the third best guy in the world behind Kiyooka and Amouzad. Jalolov is obviously riding a huge wave of momentum after taking bronze and seniors and beating Rivera so he may be the pick on paper Medal Threats: Abdullah toprak (u23 bronze, u20 Bronze x2, Cadet bronze) Predictions: Gold: Nishiuchi silver: Blaze Bronze: Jalolov Bronze: Magomedov 70kg: Favorites: PJ duke (u20 gold, u20 bronze, senior world team member), Kanan Heybatov ( 2x u23 bronze, u20 gold, 3x senior world teamer), Sina Khalili (cadet gold, senior asian bronze). I feel much more confident that PJ will medal here than I do that Blaze will. This weight is deep but I tihnk Pj is pretty clearly in the mix as a top 3 guy here and I would favor him currently over khalili. Heybatov has a very wide range of results. He looked awesome in Croatia both time at seniors and the ranking series but looked horrendous in hungary at the ranking series. I am not sure if the cut is a factor for him, but I will predict like he is at his best here. Medal Threats:Alexandr Gaidarli (u20 silver), Kaito Morita Predictions: Gold: Heybatov Silver: PJ Bronze: Khalili Bronze: Morita 74kg: Favorites: Mitchell Messenbrink (u23 bronze, u20 gold, u20 silver), Magomed Khaniev (u23 gold), Magomed Baiutkaev (u20 silver, u20 bronze, cadet gold), Yoshinosuke aoyagi (Senior gold, senior silver, u23 silver, u23 bronze, u20 bronze, cadet bronze). Another absolutely loaded weight. Initially my lean was probably slightly to Aoyagi but he just got beat pretty badly by Narikuni who was formarly a 70kg world champ and most recently has competed at 72kg in greco, so the weight could be a bit of a factor for him. I am a big fan of how both Khaniev and baitukaev wrestle, (not how they take time but how they wrestle) they are both super crafty getting too legs and are super dangerous when you are in on their legs. Manuel wagin is a wildcard here he is super strong and positional but I would be surprised if he was ready to compete with any of the above guys. Mitchell's pace I think will be a serious problem for the two Russians one by Azerbijan and I think he may have a little size on aoyagi Medal Threats: Jaideep (u20 bronze, cadet bronze), Manuel wagin (cadet silver), Magomedrasul asluev (u23 5th) Predictions: Gold: Messenbrink silver: Khaniev Bronze: Aoyagi Bronze: Baitukaev

  7. I figured this out last month based on process of elimination and a # of different factors. I had thought I posted it on here already however I do not see it. These pools have not been announced yet, but here they are Day 1 pools Penn St-Stanford-NDSU Cornell-Illinois-Little Rock Ohio St-Iowa St-Lehigh Day 2 will consist of 3 different pools as well. The 2-0 teams from Day 1 in one pool, 1-1 teams in a pool, and finally the 0-2 teams in a pool. Cornell has half their team out first semester. The way it works however (based on Foca and Ramirez last year) as they (Greg D, Ungar, Cornella, Fernandez, and Shapiro) will all be able to compete at the conclusion of the first semester. They do not have to wait for the second semester to start. Last year, Foca and Ramirez were able to participate in the dual vs NC State at home which fell on Dec 20th. It is looking like barring any injuries, Cornell should be full strength for this event. I would favor Cornell full strength over Illinois. This means quite possibly seeing Shapiro vs Kasak/Duke and Levi Haines vs Simon Ruiz. A match that Haines needed a t defensive takedown in the final seconds to win 4-1 at NCAAs. What about that third pool I listed day 1? I figured this out by the way by first separating like conference teams. Then Cornell and Little Rock accidentally put the teams they were facing on their schedule they rolled out quite early prior to changing it to show “collegiate duals” rather than the teams they were to face. Then with Iowa St having Stanford on their schedule a week after this event, and Cornell having Lehigh…everything fell into place as is. I created the graphic below for our BEG show we aired a few weeks ago

  8. Is this satire? If so, ignore my next statement, if not, please tell me who else you criticize for treating college as professional sports. This is an interesting take coming from an Oklahoma State fan whose team brought in their Spratley, Figueroa, flipped Vega, brought in Jamison, Swiderski, flipped Robideau, brought in Facundo, and Welsh, and that is just the guys on their roster this year. Last year they had wrestlers that were previously on different rosters at 125, 141, 157, 165, 174, and 285. But yeah, let's blame Bassett for making college into a professional sport. Give me a break. I hope you're criticizing Taylor and staff for flipping guys with previous commitments and bringing in guys from other teams if you're going to criticize a high schooler for changing his mind.

Also, I went back and looked at the bracket from 1992 when Kerr beat Couture. What a list of names in every bracket. Shout out to NWOF for putting out all of the old brackets and sucking me into a rabbit hole. https://nwhof.org/national-wrestling-hall-of-fame/brackets?page=2 Movie Preview:

  15. Greg D, Cornella, and Fernandez can't enroll this semester without graduating this semester, so they are sitting out to wrestle in the second semester (the one that counts). Yes, due to Ivy rules. Shapiro is on a pitch count, and I *guess* that he's saving his Ivy eligibility just in case there is an injury issue in the future. Most think Greg can beat Milani at 125; Fernandez has to get past Jaxon Joy at 149, and most think he won't. (and, no, I haven't taken a poll)

  22. My wife agreed ^^^ but when pressed on subsidizing foreigners, she said the U.S. should prioritize helping its own people. The U.S. does not recognize food, shelter, and health care as a human right but offers many programs and charity. I agree with the US on their legal stance. The US current programs must be doing okay given their willingness to extend charities to other countries where the charity is siphoned from the corrupt folks in charge.

  24. This is awesome! I’d love to see a new school win a National title. OK State or Iowa dethroning Penn State would be old hat. An ACC champ would be great for the sport. VT has been great at developing talent, just hasn’t quite gotten enough of it. These two plus Seidel and others could change that. On a somewhat related note, I don’t think Seidel gets quite the hype he deserves. The dude could’ve walked to his 4th state title at any other weight but chooses to take on Jax Forrest. If you didn’t see the match, you may not realize how close Seidel was to be beating him! He is going to be a beast in the NCAA

  32. With the given that Shawver and Pinto are at 133/174, it would be safe to assume no further Rutgers guys. Penn State usually sends a few, but it isn't at home this year. Michigan typically sends a guy (or three). Would be cool to see that. 125 - Lilledahl against anyone at 125 in the Top 5. 133 - Would love to see Ayala - Crookham. Make Crookham earn that shot at the #1 spot by beating last season's #2. That said, with Shawver being confirmed, I'd like to see him VS Crookham. 141 - I'd like to see Ragusin against either Hardy or Stanich at 141lbs, if Ragusin is actually going 141lbs. Ragusin against Echemendia would be cool, as well. Three entirely different styles there. 149 - I'd like to see McNeil against SVN, although I think SVN - Henson makes the most sense. 157 - I want to see Kasak - Taylor again. Especially since we might not even see Kasak take the mat come B1Gs. 165 - Blaze - Caliendo is the match to make here. 174 - Mantanona - Pinto for me. Steed - Pinto would also do it for me. 184 - Any two from Focus, Sinclair, McEnelly, Welsh, Ryder, and Mantanona for me. Any two of them. 197 - Elam - Barr out the gate. That one's got to do it. 285 - Mirasola - Big Taye

  33. You made a statement, in its own separate paragraph, saying no us citizen is being deported or arrested. That is what is not accurate, and I simply stated as such, before continuing on with my thoughts on immigration control as we have seen over the last 5 years. I don’t see where “playing semantics” comes in. If you meant something other than what you wrote, then possibly what you meant would be accurate, I don’t know, I can only read what you actually write. Which, in this case, is inaccurate

  34. At the end of the season the national ranking was 1. Faith Christian 2. Bishop McCort ... 4) Wyoming Seminary. So 1st in their state was first in the country. Those three had split duals with Wyoming Seminary beating Faith Christian early in the season and losing to McCort later. Faith Christian then beat Bishop McCort to win the state dual title at the end of the season. So the picture might be a little unclear looking at duals, but there were also tournaments. McCort, Faith Christian, and Wyoming Seminary entered the same tournaments thought the year and Faith Christian won every tournament they entered. Bishop McCort outplaced Wyoming Seminary at every tournament the two of them entered. Wyoming Seminary is not in the PIAA so their end of season tournament was National Preps where they finished 3rd as a team. By the end of the season the pecking order was pretty clear with Bishop McCort #2 ahead of Wyoming Seminary and behind Faith Christian. I get the argument that McCort can't be number 1 all time because they were behind Faith Christian, but they were very close with Faith Christian who set a number of records - Most points ever at PIAAs (232.5), most PIAA champions in a season (4, tied with 8 teams), most PIAA place winners in a season (10 tied with 2004 Northampton). McCort was close with the 2nd most team points ever at PIAAs (218.5), the most PIAA champions in a season (4, tied with 8 teams), and 3rd most PIAA place winners in a season (9). 2025 Faith Christian had a big three that stacks up pretty well with all these historic teams we have been analyzing in terms of recruiting rankings. Joe Bachmann (#3 2027), Adam Waters (#7 2026), Nicholas Singer (#18 2027), Cael Weidemoyer (#57 2026), Mark Effendian (#58 2026), Gauge Botero (#68 2025), Jason Singer(#72 2026), Max Stein (#96 2025) Those rankings are from Flo who doesn't have a 2028 big board yet, but as someone else pointed out other services have Freddy Bachman #1 in the class of 2028. So last years Faith Christian could have 3 top 10s and 4 top 20s. Looking ahead to next season 3 of Faith Christian's PIAA place winners graduate whereas only 1 of Bishop McCort's is not returning, so it is possible the 2026 team wins PIAAs and the state dual title. It will be close again. The past historic teams discussed here did not always wrestle the top opponents and were not perfect. That 2005 Davison team finished 2nd at the Medina tournament where Metcalf famously beat Schlatter. The 2004 Davison team that also featured Paul Donahoe won Medina but only by ~4 team points and Medina wasn't the toughest tournament in the country that year.

  43. He didn't give me loads of stuff but there is a recruit from a big time PA high school for wrestling, around the 170lb weight that I believe won Fargo that is super interested in PSU. You may be able to guess the high school. He wouldn't tell me the name because he is not allowed. Aaron Nagao and Braeden Davis are super nice kids according to this booster. Tyler Kasak 100% had a concussion last year. There is one PSU wrestler who started the last two years who is legit terrified he may never win a starting spot at PSU again. He would be ranked in the top 3 to start the year. Carter is a nutcase. That's it. That and the info about the 133lb and 141lb plans for who is starting. He did mention that no wrestle offs have happened so things can change, but Blaze was promissed 133lbs and Davis is the plan at 141lbs. EDIT: One more thing. Blaze is a lefty and has a cannon in dodgeball. EDIT 2: Sorry I keep remembering things. He said Bo Bassett would be comitted to PSU if not for his father.

  45. Who is beating Focus this year? Kueter will barely be getting back into form by March rather than peaking. Mirasola is unlikely since he can't win by pushouts in folk and is very unlikely to get through Focus's stingy defense, Trumble has gone down since his Final X breakthrough, he will ride Feldman like a mule, and Bastida isn't the same he's got too many miles. No one likes this outcome but it feels inevitable unless Kueter and/or Mirasola takes a huge leap. Feldman was progressing very well but seemed to have been figured out by the end of last season and I just can't see him finishing his shots. You think Focus did a good job of riding everyone at 197 NCAAs? He's going to look ridiculous on a full feed.

  47. I also play a little disc golf, and it's funny seeing an amazing athlete completely baffled by the way most discs turn hard to the left. It's also amazing to see (not that I doubted their genuine friendship before) that guys like DC aren't just friends when they can have fun on podcasts or in good times, but that he took the time to fly out and visit Ben in his home. I really hope this doesn't come out wrong, but as far as the wrestling community is concerned, Ben is the best person that could go through such an arduous ordeal. Between his absolutely positive outlook on most aspects of life, his support from the wrestling, MMA, and even the disc golf community, and how beloved he is by all has been so apparent over the past 2+ months. I'm not sure how many of you know (I nerded out on disc golf for a bit), but Ben has custom discs from one of the sports biggest brands Discraft. He also has a course on his property and holds an annual pro-am tournament where several of the top disc golfers in the world take part. My father-in-law passed away suddenly two weeks ago today, and between that and following Ben's unexpected journey, it is truly a reminder that none of us know when our time will come. This video brought me a lot of joy seeing even a fragile version of Ben being his truest self. Sorry for being sentimental, but this video struck me.
