The interview will be hilarious Mr President what do you think of this event? "Huge Event. Lots of spandex. Never seen more tight spandex. A little gay but these gays are tough. What do they call it? Cauliflower ear? It tastes terrible but you have to eat you vegetables. What do I know. This is a lot of big strong guys. I got here and said Wow that's a lot of big strong guys. A lot of people are telling me this guy Kale Sanderson is the best. I don't know. Is that a vegetable. What do I know. Hulk Hogan. I know the man. Great guy. Really great guy."21 points

Just wanted to give a shout out to this guy. One of the best redemption stories around. Those of us who've been around the forums for a while will know the guy's history. I remember him as a young phenom, wrestling in Cadets at Salulaev's weight, getting injured in the semis. Comes back, parlays that into undefeated high school career, goes to OSU. Gets regularly whupped by Dieringer, which necessitates a huge cut to 157.... things go haywire, off the team as he turns to drugs/alcohol, transfers, gets arrested after a bender... rock bottom. Then surrounds himself with good people, picks himself up, gets sober, comes back to take 4th and 3rd at NCAAs at Lock Haven. Becomes very, very open about his sobriety network as he gets his feet firmly planted, raises his kids, trains hard, starts a club, many of them in Vegas. Made Final X last year and does it again this year, finally overcoming the Dieringer hurdle. Very open in his interview: Chance Marsteller Gets Final X Rematch With Jordan Burroughs (flowrestling.org) Love JB but you won't catch me rooting against Marsteller either.20 points

No, because it's not as simple as you think it is. Having reffed, your mind is conditioned to red/green, right/left and connected to the scorers table, the scoreboard, and the ankles of the wrestlers to insure you have the right wrestler scoring. It might seem cool to the fan, but changing out colors every match at a tournament would be an absolute nightmare. People would be yelling all day long that the score was wrong and coaches would need 17 bricks to get things right.17 points

i just got off the phone with a member on the staff. he said Sammy is doing good and walking on his own and doing rehab. take it for what it's worth. perhaps there's more going on and they don't want to say much. or perhaps it's exactly as they told me. i've talked to his mother once right after it happened. and i've thought about contact sammy or his parents again. but i also want to respect their privacy and not be that guy at this time.15 points

I just want to say that Griffith is making a mockery of modern college wrestling. First he is insubordinate. He refuses not to train when his school basically tells him not to and then he goes and wrestles in a national tournament after his school cancels his program. Then after he shamefully forced his school to keep his and many other programs which do not generate revenue but rather are just about student athletes, he disgracefully insists -- a national champion, no less! -- on wrestling at every opportunity. He takes on his top rival 4 times in a single year, who does he think he is? Kyle Dake? Tom Brands? Those guys are relics! And then this year he -- how gauche, a 2x NCAA finalist -- not only enters but actually wrestles in a holiday tournament. And then, to top it off, less than two weeks later he refuses to duck, and loses to, the guy who gave him all he wanted in the Scuffle final. I say this guy has violated so many norms of decent conduct that he should be canceled and never spoken of on these boards ever again.15 points

I want to get my best wishes in early as I will be out and about. Everyone have a wonderful and safe time. I enjoy arguing with you all, I enjoy learning from you all, and I enjoy being entertained by you all. I want to thank @Husker_Du for scrambling to put this board together on short notice as an early Christmas present to us all. Thank you @BobDole for your work from beyond the grave to make it all happen. And thank you @jross for archiving the previous board. Enjoy your family and friends everyone.15 points

If you haven't noticed most everything is transferred to this site. If you have suggestions or more likely PRAISE send them my way. In a couple days you should be able to access the site through intermatwrestle.com also and that will be the main domain for here. Merry Christmas and enjoy fellas.15 points

Looking at the brackets I am always interested who lost their first match and made it to AA. It appears that only one person did that this year. 184 (11) Gavin Kane UNC - took 8th. There were a number of folks that AA'd after winning their first match but losing their second. But I am only listing the guy that went the furthest after losing their first match. I say congrats to Gavin in his Herculean effort to come back from a 1st round loss and come back to AA. mspart13 points

Well, I'm 58 with no speed, skills, discipline, or flexibility. My eligibility is exhausted, and while I think it would be cruel to force others to seem me in a singlet, I really want this. Oh wait, I just read past the topic title. Never mind. And if my wife asks, I was never here.13 points

A few of the finalists seemed to cast their vote for wrestlers named Jesus or God. One gave a penalty point to a fellow named Mohammed (Brooks). One voted for his balls (Starocci). One voted against himself (Yianni, who said he has to get much better). Several voted for their parents or the genetic lottery. One or two gave a partial vote to their coaches. One may have voted for his losing opponent (O'Toole). And a celebrity with body guards in the stands voted for himself. In fact, I think he gave himself a dozen or so votes. And said they are still looking for the rest of the ballots.12 points

Sammy’s just a good dude. Always ready to drop a handshake, fist bump or a hug, even if you don’t know him super well. One of those guys it’s hard to root against. It’s refreshing we’ve got the whole sport (it seems) rallying around him.11 points

What an old school throw back. Felt like I was watching a post match interview from the 1970's. He looks like he can go back to working in the steel mill next week a champion. Good stuff.11 points

He plays fast and lose with the truth. Everyone who is on this board knows that Spencer was not favored to win the Olympic Gold in 2020 or 2024. Why do people need to stretch the truth, the story is compelling enough without the exaggerations. I made it half way through and he kept piling on more untruths. Specner was not going to be the first and 4X PA champ. He was not undefeated in college until his tournament. After 5 minutes I could not take anymore11 points

Well . . . to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, and of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter from various differentiated perspectives and without condemning another's perspective but still trying to be objective and disinterested in my analysis, and by considering each and every sound argument, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.11 points

To be honest, one of the worst takes ever on this forum. Dude has medaled in every world/Olympic tournament since 2015, with basically the only thing keeping him from have more golds was the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the world. It would be one thing to say Snyder appears to be slipping a little, but at this point he will still perform better than anyone else we could put out there.10 points

What a run. Looking forward to the touching moment at the medal ceremony when Tazhudinov tears up hearing the Bahrain national anthem for the first time.10 points

Dake’s style at the world level has become increasingly more agitating. And it’s why magic man has surpassed him. Anyone who’s ever watched Dake in his career knows he can do so much more offensively. But he’s content to try and win every match against a competent opponent 3-0 while hugging his opponents in chest wraps as often as he can. I have no idea why he’s decided to pigeonhole himself into that. Meanwhile, DT says I’m going to pour it on anyone, anywhere as much as I want to. I wish Dake would start wrestling with that mindset.10 points

Personal or otherwise. Could be anything. The one that sticks out to me is Iowa's Randy Lewis talking about the time he wrestled Dave Shultz in practive. I know many of you have read or heard this story. but it is awesome. Randy lewis used to post on thematforums under the moniker Lewboo This is an epic post from the USA Wrestling forum by Randy Lewis about the late great Olympic and World Champ Dave Schultz. Lewis himself was a 1984 Olympic Wrestling Champion and an all time great. Dave Schultz couldn't turn me Postby lewboo » Fri Jan 31, 2014 3:33 pm With the Dave Schultz tournament going on this weekend, and my good friend Royce Alger telling his story about his first workout with Dave Schultz on Facebook, I thought it would be appropriate to tell my story of my first and ONLY workout with the great Dave Schultz. Dave was a great friend of mine, and we were teammates many times and were at training camps together many times, but I only got on the mat with him one time, for a total of just one minute. I would often roll around with bigger wrestlers in practice, but I was always afraid to wrestle Dave Schultz. Dave was the nicest guy in the world off the mat, but I knew that on the mat he was a different animal. I had seen enough of Dave Schultz in matches and in practice to know that on the mat he was as Stephen A Smith would say “A BAD MAN!!!” I always felt like if I were to wrestle him, I would be unable to protect myself. It turns out I was correct!!! I remember one time at the 1984 Olympic training camp and Dave didn’t have a partner and he asked me if I wanted to roll around a little. I said “Dave, I am not ever going to wrestle with you until I am retired! I don’t want to get hurt!” One year later, I had temporarily retired, and I was at a world team practice and guys were switching partners, and Dave said to me “Lewboo, now that you are retired you want to roll with me?” I said “Not really but I will for a little bit.” Just as I got paired up with Dave, coach Jim Humphries, who was running the practice announced, “1 minute periods, par terre, world team member on top!” I thought, really, one minute underneath Dave Schultz, that doesn’t sound very fun! Well, it took about 15 seconds for Dave to get my right foot placed up over my left ear, bending my body in a very painful way! My knee, my hip, my back, my neck, and my shoulder were all being wrenched at the same time! Pain was shooting through my entire body, and I was trying to roll over onto my back as fast as I could! Unfortunately for me I couldn’t move! Somehow, my neck and head got twisted so that my mouth and nose were stuck in the mat, and I couldn’t breathe. Not only was my body in severe pain, but now I was also suffocating, and I couldn’t reach Dave with either of my hands to tap out. My body somehow got stuck in a position where I couldn’t roll over, and Dave kept cranking harder and harder to try and turn me. I was stuck in this position for about 45 seconds, in severe pain and suffocating, unable to turn over and just as I started to black out, coach Humphries saved my LIFE by blowing the whistle. Dave let me go, and I rolled over onto my back, sobbing uncontrollably, and hyperventilating trying to catch my breath. Dave looked at me and said, wow, I can’t believe you didn’t turn over, I was really cranking hard. I said I was trying as hard as I could to turn over, but I couldn’t. I cried like a baby for about 5 minutes straight after that, and I never wrestled with Dave Schultz again. I have told this story to many other wrestlers when they ask me about Dave, and I follow it up by saying yeah, Dave was pretty good on top, but he couldn’t turn me! Writing this brings tears to my eyes and I and the wrestling world miss Dave so much, he was such a great person and such a great wrestler10 points

https://wvusports.com/news/2023/3/24/blog-cardinales-toughness-and-persistence-leads-to-another-all-america-season.aspx Not only did he AA as the 28 seed, coming off major shoulder injury from last season he started the season finding out he had stress fractures in both big toes . After some time off he returned around midlands and immediately tore his acl, after sitting out a few weeks he came back to practice and immediately had a complete bucket handle meniscus tear , he had the meniscus repair surgery just 2 weeks before big 12s and 27 days before the start of nationals . He wrestled all matches at ncaas including the meaningless 7th/8th match…guy is an absolute warrior and he did all this while in medical school this guy should be the one selling excuses are for wussies gear10 points

Well, I will try to keep this as non-controversial as I can and stick to facts: 1. He is not the current President 2. By any reasonable account, he is an extremely divisive and controversial figure. 3. It can easily distract from the mat action. 4. It can pose security risks. 5. He is widely known for making things about himself. 6. By his own account (as well as journalistic reports), he is about to to be arrested (indicted) next Tuesday, and he has called publicly for protests. Do you want to see protests (or worse) break out in the arena when wrestlers (their families, friends, fans) have spent much of their entire life preparing for this evening and moment?10 points

OK, let's get the boring team race stuff out of the way first. Though there is a little gift in there from Wrestlestat to @jajensen09. Christmas comes late to Lincoln. For our bonus content this week I thought we would look at the late season surprises. Who are the highest ranked wrestlers that were unranked in the pre-season (using Intermat)? Take a bow Owen Trephan. The NC State heavyweight will be looking to throw his weight around come tournament time. After going 44-17 across his three freshman years (three? ahh, remember Covid? Those were good times), he is 17-3 this season with a 6 match winning streak. But the Keith "He Cannot Be Killed With Conventional Weapons" Richards Award has to go to Illinois' Michael Carr. The seventh year senior has battled back from a number of injuries to return to wrestling (though at 3-0, I am not sure how full that return is yet). You will notice there are no freshman on the list. I filtered them out as they are typically not seeded in the pre-season. So for our double bonus section let's look at the freshmen that have made the biggest jump since early in the season. While Caleb Henson and Levi Haines have the highest current rank at #8, it is Lachlan McNeil who is the Movingest and Shakingest among Movers and Shakers. Entering the rankings at #26, the Tar Heel has jump 14 spots to #12. No news here as it has been well covered, but I had a number reactions to the fact that PSU has three freshman on this list: Wow, that is some strong recruiting. That is also some damn fine coaching. This does not portend well for wrestling fans suffering under the hegemony of Penn State. This may be a good test of the "PSU outperforms at the NCAA's" phenomena. With this many freshmen this highly ranked can they keep the outperformance in tact?10 points

How about a new business model. When I agree to pay for a new year of Flo I also at that point in time sit down and watch 2 hours of non stop Flo commercials so when it is time to watch wrestling I can actually watch WRESTLING!!10 points

I'm a Mizzou fan, but give credit where credit is due. Virginia Tech has been a tough dual for the Tigers and have won the last 3 outings. All have been nail biters. Your only as tough as the company you keep and I'd rather take a close lost that prepares you for post season, than easy W's that measure nothing and are not as intriguing to follow. Building a deep roster, developing talent, and staying healthy are all part of the equation of W's and L's. I'm most proud of the fact that 5 of the 10 wrestlers in the lineup were products of Missouri high schools and chose the "Tiger Style" culture. Brian Smith is as concerned about building "good men" as he is building "good wrestlers!" If he continues to keep most the best "Show Me" wrestlers at home, we will be ok.10 points

I mowed lawns to earn money as a kid, probably helped me with pushing stuff... maybe pushing the pace in a match as well. If the push out rule was around when I was wrestling, the lawn mowing definitely would have been to my advantage. I also played Atari as a kid... the action in teh video games was pretty slow compared to today. I attribute my slowness to that. I feel cheated that the games I grew up on did not prepare me for wrestling as it did RBY.9 points
