Just wanted to give a shout out to this guy. One of the best redemption stories around. Those of us who've been around the forums for a while will know the guy's history. I remember him as a young phenom, wrestling in Cadets at Salulaev's weight, getting injured in the semis. Comes back, parlays that into undefeated high school career, goes to OSU. Gets regularly whupped by Dieringer, which necessitates a huge cut to 157.... things go haywire, off the team as he turns to drugs/alcohol, transfers, gets arrested after a bender... rock bottom. Then surrounds himself with good people, picks himself up, gets sober, comes back to take 4th and 3rd at NCAAs at Lock Haven. Becomes very, very open about his sobriety network as he gets his feet firmly planted, raises his kids, trains hard, starts a club, many of them in Vegas. Made Final X last year and does it again this year, finally overcoming the Dieringer hurdle. Very open in his interview: Chance Marsteller Gets Final X Rematch With Jordan Burroughs (flowrestling.org) Love JB but you won't catch me rooting against Marsteller either.21 points

The interview will be hilarious Mr President what do you think of this event? "Huge Event. Lots of spandex. Never seen more tight spandex. A little gay but these gays are tough. What do they call it? Cauliflower ear? It tastes terrible but you have to eat you vegetables. What do I know. This is a lot of big strong guys. I got here and said Wow that's a lot of big strong guys. A lot of people are telling me this guy Kale Sanderson is the best. I don't know. Is that a vegetable. What do I know. Hulk Hogan. I know the man. Great guy. Really great guy."21 points

For me.....46th NCAA Championship dating back to 1972 (Maryland).....this will be 40 in a row, dating back to 1985 (Oklahoma City)....before I retired, it was a vacation, today.....it's still a vacation....lol. Some day I plan on being the last man standing....oh, and by the way, I can prove I've been to each of those NCAA's!!!20 points

Shane isn’t there because he’s a hype guy - he’s there because he works his butt off and earned the right to be the lead guy. He’s always “on” and his hype isn’t a schtick. Hype guys don’t do research and appreciate action like Shane does. He’s excitable and has a nearly unmatched passion for the sport.19 points

He's there to tell Spencer Lee that he actually won.19 points

Would a true "alpha male" have a poll as to what he should do next? Or would he just do it?17 points
-
No, because it's not as simple as you think it is. Having reffed, your mind is conditioned to red/green, right/left and connected to the scorers table, the scoreboard, and the ankles of the wrestlers to insure you have the right wrestler scoring. It might seem cool to the fan, but changing out colors every match at a tournament would be an absolute nightmare. People would be yelling all day long that the score was wrong and coaches would need 17 bricks to get things right.17 points

Sure, I speak fluent Brands. Let me help. Brands: "Weren't ready. Weren't ready...you have to be ready, like beyond ready. If you just think your ready and you think its normal, its not normal." Translation: I wasn't ready. Brands: "And that's not me putting them on a pedestal, that's not me conceding anything." Translation: We never stood a chance. Brands: "I like our guy." Translation: The portal is closed.16 points

i just got off the phone with a member on the staff. he said Sammy is doing good and walking on his own and doing rehab. take it for what it's worth. perhaps there's more going on and they don't want to say much. or perhaps it's exactly as they told me. i've talked to his mother once right after it happened. and i've thought about contact sammy or his parents again. but i also want to respect their privacy and not be that guy at this time.15 points

I just want to say that Griffith is making a mockery of modern college wrestling. First he is insubordinate. He refuses not to train when his school basically tells him not to and then he goes and wrestles in a national tournament after his school cancels his program. Then after he shamefully forced his school to keep his and many other programs which do not generate revenue but rather are just about student athletes, he disgracefully insists -- a national champion, no less! -- on wrestling at every opportunity. He takes on his top rival 4 times in a single year, who does he think he is? Kyle Dake? Tom Brands? Those guys are relics! And then this year he -- how gauche, a 2x NCAA finalist -- not only enters but actually wrestles in a holiday tournament. And then, to top it off, less than two weeks later he refuses to duck, and loses to, the guy who gave him all he wanted in the Scuffle final. I say this guy has violated so many norms of decent conduct that he should be canceled and never spoken of on these boards ever again.15 points

I want to get my best wishes in early as I will be out and about. Everyone have a wonderful and safe time. I enjoy arguing with you all, I enjoy learning from you all, and I enjoy being entertained by you all. I want to thank @Husker_Du for scrambling to put this board together on short notice as an early Christmas present to us all. Thank you @BobDole for your work from beyond the grave to make it all happen. And thank you @jross for archiving the previous board. Enjoy your family and friends everyone.15 points

A few things to add here that haven't been covered: -His videos (of minors) are embedded on porn sites -Many of his most viewed videos have large portions that don't feature wrestling (wrestlers walking around during injury time/blood time) -He films and uploads videos without having permission/rights to the events Most recently he wasn't credentialed for Midlands and filmed anyway before he got kicked out by Storniolo. We've tried to strike his channel for copyright infringement because that's what we can actually prove. We're still working through it but things have gotten tricky where we've had to bring in legal.14 points

I had fun doing this last year and I thought it created discussion. Again, I am just a nobody wrestling fan so feel free to let me know where you think I went wrong or if I have the wrong starter or any general feedback EDIT: I plan to do the same for all of the conferences but I think Big Ten is the only one with all of its conference schedule completed. Big 10 Interactive Brackets Interactive Brackets: use the interactive brackets using the following letters: D, M, T, F (decision, major, tech, fall). Seed changes: You can change those seeds on the 125R, 133R, 141R, etc. sheets and it will automatically update the team predictions based off of seeds with no bonus factored in. Incomplete data: I only have a wrestlers record vs. who I am projecting will be the starters at that same weight. The Big 10 schedule is done so I figured I would get started but I will add in wrester's win-loss records, coaches ranking, RPI, and actual wrestlestat ranking (I have them all listed at #99 right now just to make the formulas work). My Best guesses at the seeds 125 lbs. #1 Matt Ramos (PUR) (6-1 BIG STARTERS) #2 Drake Ayala (IOWA) (6-2 BIG STARTERS) #3 Eric Barnett (WIS) (6-2 BIG STARTERS) #4 Patrick McKee (MINN) (4-4 BIG Put on your finest singlet and get ready to walk the red carpet. It is award show season at Intermat. Gas up your private jet, sit in your limo waiting to make your entrance, and then be prepared to lecture the rest of us about greenhouse gases. There Is No Team in I Presenting our first award tonight is a man who is all about team. Because he always puts the team first (or The Lord, it alternates) opening the envelope is our very own A.J. Ferrari. A.J.F.: And the winner is...me, I am the ultimate winner. I am number one on each of my hands. But for some reason this piece of paper says @MLB9 and @Dogbone. Who the hell are those guys? Well, they are the Intermat celebrities who came closest to nailing the final team score. At 6-28, they each were within a point of perfection. The Happy Valley Insider folks covered themselves in glory as well. On the flip side, you would have to have been nuts to pick Iowa keeping this one close. And so we have a lobotomized @Mr. PeanutButter tied with a crazy @crzyctldy at the bottom of the heap. But good news, an HVI poster takes the overall "lead" here. Something to work on for next year? Details Matter But before you start with the victory laps let's talk about process. How you got there matters. After all, what is a team score, but the sum of a bunch of individual scores. On that front we have a different set of winners. Take a bow @Perry for having the smallest absolute error across all ten matches. @Interviewed_at_Weehawken takes runner up while @CHROMEBIRD and @Truzzcat round up the balance of the podium positions. Visionaries (aka Know It Alls) Yeah, but too much details is for nerds. All I need to know is who got the most matches correct? This is clearly the most important category by a long, long way. I don't need to do any fancy pants math to tell either. All I need to do is look at the illustrious list of luminaries who got 9 of 10 calls correct. We like to argue a lot on these here boards, but I think there is one thing that is beyond dispute, these dudes/dudettes know wrestling. Back to the Math, NERD Putting it all together. If we reduce all of this to ranks and average the ranks we get a new rank. As rank as the concept of all that math may be to some of you, you will just have to hold your noses as we crown our champion. The straightest shooter among us took aim at, and hit, the bully's eye. Congratulations to @Interviewed_at_Weehawken for being the most comprehensively correct. Now @nhs67, we may need to have a word. Thank you everyone (also receiving votes @Barracuda141, @Le duke, @Eagle26, @Pinnacle, @JimmyBT, @Pish, @1032004, @ionel, @PortaJohn, @VakAttack, @Gus, @TylerDurden, @BIGTENFANBOY, @TheDFP, @fishbane, @flyingcement, @BAC, @Jimmy Cinnabon) for participating.13 points

Victor Wembanyama gets drafted by the Spurs (along with his brother). He rapes a girl in San Antonio, posts a picture of his butthole on SM, totals a car and almost kills a teammate while driving like an asshole, his brother shoots up the house and car of another teammate for dating his sister. Spurs release him. Then he gets overtures from another team (say the Lakers), he goes to LA, signs a two-day contract to play in an intrasquad game and plays poorly but scores the winning basket at which point he takes a swing at Lebron then flips him off and all of the Lakers fans in attendance. After that he gives an interview in which he says that he's a good guy and a "christian", starts selling magic rocks and SM and is now saying the NBA is for pussies and he's going to do something tough like going to play in Turkey.13 points

I started 4 years at Penn competed twice in the NCAA tournament. In 1975 I won my first round match and separated my shoulder defaulting out. I'm a big supporter of Penn wrestling and I'm on the EIWA Hall of Fame committee.13 points

Looking at the brackets I am always interested who lost their first match and made it to AA. It appears that only one person did that this year. 184 (11) Gavin Kane UNC - took 8th. There were a number of folks that AA'd after winning their first match but losing their second. But I am only listing the guy that went the furthest after losing their first match. I say congrats to Gavin in his Herculean effort to come back from a 1st round loss and come back to AA. mspart13 points

OK. So who won? Well, its complicated. There are at least three ways you can answer that question, so let's look at all three, shall we. Most Correct Matches You can only get ten right. So in the name of symmetry there were ten posters who got ten right. I want to thank @TylerDurden, @Techfall, @PortaJohn, @Nittanychris, @ionel, @CGriff, @AZ_wrestling, @666, PSUWrestling2425 (on HVI) and psu0408 (HVI) for keeping things neat and tidy. But wait. It turns out you can get ten correct and still not get them all right. psu0408 was feeling his oats a bit and added an eleventh category (which he got wrong - sorry, no points deductions - EXCEPT FORE YOU), so I am sorry, but he is eliminated from the competition. The True Iowa Homer Award goes to... Lets pause a moment to recognize a true individualist. In this age of social media driven peer pressures it can be so difficult to swim against the tide of popular opinion. So when a true hero emerges, we must celebrate him. While @Mr. PeanutButter may have lost this particular competition by traditional standards, he is not a hidebound traditionalist. His bravery has won over the heart of every true Iowa wrestling fan. And what could be more important than that? Well, bragging rights, of course. But "True Iowa Homer" is probably second best? It Is A Team Sport, Dummy (I have heard so many times. Mostly the dummy part but...) Award At the end of the day it comes down to the team score. So who was closest to the pin? As previously reported, our own TylerDurden takes the prize. Seer of seers, prognosticator of prognosticators. For the rest of the year all his predictions have the weight of law. He shall not be questioned. When his statements contradict known facts, it is the known fact that shall give way. Look on TylerDurden's Works, ye Mighty, and despair! The Lee Corso Award For Attention To Detail (or maybe it will be named the Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right Award) Award Ya know...about this team thing....isn't the final score the sum of the individual scores? And shouldn't we see who came closest there? Lee and I are glad you asked., If we sum of the individual deviations we get a better sense of who was "right" by not allowing two wrong answers to offset each other. @Techfall, step to the front of the class and take your bow. Wisdom (?) Of The Crowds Not so much. Unlike in years past the crowd was not very wise this year. With a final predicted score of 25.5 to 7.7 the Iowa portion was fine, but lack of faith in PSU to ring the bonus point cash register is frankly disappointing. Anyone using us to bet the spread (20.5, I think) would have taken a big L on the bet. We promise to do better next time. And as always, thank you all who participated. The Crowd not previously mentioned: @VakAttack @Spencerlee @PSUDad97 @MidwestMan @meZYNbrink @JPack @Interviewed_at_Weehawken @Hillbilly Jim @Gage @Dogbone @BruceyB @BIGTENFANBOY @BarSeries @BAC @Truzzcat @RawDog @Ragu @Pish @Pinnacle @nhs67 @Le duke @Jimmy Cinnabon @Husker_Du (though you made me work for it) @Gus @Gene Mills Fan @flyingcement @fishbane @CHROMEBIRD @bnwtwg @BloodRound @Barracuda141 @1032004 @RandolphTJones Same time next year (B1G schedule permitting)?12 points

No one thought Wally Pipp, one of the best power hitters of the dead ball era, would lose his starting spot to Lou Gehrig just because he had a headache one day. After tonight's Rutgers dual we have to ask, will Starocci lose out to Barraclough? Will Kerkvliet lose out to Cochran? After all Cale has no loyalty to anyone. Just ask Nevills. A few of the finalists seemed to cast their vote for wrestlers named Jesus or God. One gave a penalty point to a fellow named Mohammed (Brooks). One voted for his balls (Starocci). One voted against himself (Yianni, who said he has to get much better). Several voted for their parents or the genetic lottery. One or two gave a partial vote to their coaches. One may have voted for his losing opponent (O'Toole). And a celebrity with body guards in the stands voted for himself. In fact, I think he gave himself a dozen or so votes. And said they are still looking for the rest of the ballots.12 points

... we would just like to say that we will be on our best behaviour. See, we even used the English spelling of behavior just now. Very classy. Does this mean that our **** doesn't stink. Well, yes. Kinda. We're so excited about this sponsorship deal that we've added a "Plus" to our corporate name: The ILLINI Wrestling Blog & Forum & Beyond Plus. If you want to see our ILLINI Midlands Preview, it's at this link. As always, it is free without advertising. All you will ever get from us is top notch journalism from respected and impartial journalists. That's our promise to you. The ILLINI had two champions at last year's Midlands, Zac Braunagel and Edmond Ruth. Can Zac wrestle unattached? Yowzers, I just thought of that. What about Danny? Wouldn't it be cool if the Brawlnagels just wrestled Greco holds at this year's Midlands? That would be so epic! Edmond Ruth is undefeated against the field, at least 7-0, including 3-0 against the other highest seeds at the weight. Heavyweight should be a blast with Cohlton Shultz and Yaraslau Slavikouski and Luke Luffman entered. You can expect ILLINOIS to show off some of their true Freshmen wunderkinds to see how they do against a field with 48 teams in it. The younglings did pretty darn well at Fargo last year, but how does that translate to the greatest folkstyle tournament in the world? Finally, what would an ILLINI Midlands Preview be without a cartoon about the Iowa Hawkeyes? .11 points

With the World Championships wrapped up and the College season about 6 weeks away, it is time to start revving the NCAA engine a little. Let's start by looking at All-Americans. And let's get this out of the way up front. Yes, I include the top 8 seeds from the cancelled 2020 tournament. So sue me. AA Trivia There have been 190 schools with at least one All-American. A total of 5,590 All-American honors have been shared by 3,307 wrestlers (or perhaps fewer if I have some mis-spellings). In 1981 there were only 79 All-Americans as there was no 8th place awarded at 134. Oklahoma State, at 480 AA's, is a full 32.6% ahead of Iowa's 362. The longest active streak of consecutive years with at least one All-American belongs to Iowa at 52 years. The longest dry spell is Army at 15 years. They last had an AA in 2008 (Matt Kyler, 141). The Top 5 At each team's current pace (average of 2022 and 2023): Iowa will overtake Oklahoma State for the all time lead in 2057. Penn State will overtake Iowa in 2101. Cael Sanderson will be 121 years old and still wondering if Christian Pyle has a plan. AA's By Total Wrestlers with 5 AAs: 6 Wrestlers with 4 AAs: 171 Wrestlers with 3 AAs: 447 Wrestlers with 2 AAs: 852 Wrestlers with 1 AAs: 1,830 Probability of AA by Year We are used to 33 man brackets with 8 AA's per bracket (~24%), but it wasn't always that way. Using the rules that existed at the time and @Jason Bryant's participation stats by year, the most difficult year to AA was 1970 when only 15% of wrestlers earned AA status. Where the AA's Come From Not every AA was a top 8 seed to begin with. Below is the percentage of AA's by seed (left column) and broken into the seeding eras. What Is A Top 8 Seed Worth? Seven of the past nine years have been hard on Top 8 seeds. From 2014 to present, only 2017 and 2019 saw them perform above trend.11 points
