  1. I get that there's a tradition in wrestling to not jump up the rankings unless you beat a higher-ranked wrestler, but when will a ranker out there move him to at least #4? If you look at his performance at U20 worlds (one of the best indicators of NCAA success) and his absolute dominance so far this year, does anybody doubt that he should be in the top 4? If it were me, i'd move him to #2. Maybe Carr was rusty early and beats him, but I doubt it.

  2. With all the talk on Happy Valley Insider and Go Iowa Awesome about whether Penn State will break Iowa’s all-time NCAA team scoring record it is time to put some stuff straight. The first thing is that Iowa fans are more fatalistic than PSU fans are optimistic. Each site ran a poll asking if this PSU team could reach 1997 Iowa’s team scoring record of 170 points. While only 18.8% of voters (13 of 69) on the PSU site thought it would happen, 30.8% of voters (45 of 146) on the Iowa site had that uneasy feeling. Both fan bases surprise me with their takes. But the real issue is… What is the team scoring record? Well, why do you ask? Can’t you just look it up? Seesh, this guy really does know nothing. I did look it up. And what I found was Lee Corso standing in my way saying, “Not so fast, my friend”. When Iowa put up their 170 team points in 1997 the rules for scoring the results of a match, for advancement, and for placement were different than they are now. Scoring 1997 v 2024 There are differences between then and now in all three elements of team scoring. Bonus - In 1997 they distinguished between a tech fall without back points (called a match termination) and one with back points (called a tech fall). A match termination was worth 1 team point, while a tech fall was worth 1.5 team points. Today they are all worth 1.5 team points. So, we need to adjust Iowa’s total by adding a half point to any match terminations (foreshadowing – this will get tricky). Advancement – In 1997 the tournament was scored as a 64-man bracket whenever there was a pig tail. Not every weight had pigtails though. Today it is always scored as a 32-man bracket with a pigtail. So, what is the difference? In a 64-man bracket everyone who wins a first round match in the championship (or consolation) bracket gets an extra point (or half point). For example, in a 64-man bracket the winner gets 5 advancement points instead of the current 4 points. Placement - Placement points for third through eighth place were also different in 1997. We will also need to adjust Iowa’s total for these differences. Putting It All Together The 1997 Iowa team loses the extra 4.5 advancement points available in their 64-man brackets at 142, 158, 177, 190, and 275. But they get an extra bonus point at 150 as Lincoln McIlravy’s 1-point match terminations become 1.5-point tech falls. They also pick up an extra 5 placement points for their sixth and fifth place finishes. Adding it all up and 1997 Iowa now has 171.5 points. That is the real point record PSU needs to shoot for.

  6. It comes from Vegetarian parents. Check their other kids. Names like Raddichio, Jicama and Kohlrabi.(some parents can't spell the last one so we get Kael) It is reported the next craze in names for wrestling kids will be Bamboo - as in "Bamboo, SHOOT" when yelling at the kid during a match.

  8. ...but he hasn't beaten anybody close to the level of what you're talking about. Even under wrestlestat's algorithmic approach, Mesenbrink is ranked 8th. Again, it's ok to have him prove his greatness on the mat. He's going to have the opportunity.

  11. It's more impressive than that. Forrest is a sophomore. Class of 2026. I was one of those on the Lehigh Sports Forum insisting that Stanich should have med forfeited in the finals. Had he won, he would have gained nothing, except to prove that he hadn't ducked a high schooler -- in essence, winning a lot of flame and air (Man of La Mancha reference). Had he been injured .... well, at least his redshirt hasn't been blown for this season, so he'd still have four seasons available to him. But losing -- Forrest is now the winter favorite for an NCAA title in 2027, and if Stanich finishes in the top few at NCAAs then the sports world knows that a high school kid could likely beat the best in college.

  13. Sta(l)rocci was a punk long before that dual. If you were to look for a heel on the team prior to that most people would have said Sta(l)rocci, as it were. That said... this is entirely on the Maryland coaching staff for not preparing their squad appropriately.

  14. I’m excited for Star vs Welch. No one ever tries to push the pace against Carter. I don’t think Welch knows how to go backwards. so this will be a fun match. I think Carter wins comfortably but it’s going to be fun watching 2 guys scrap for 7 minutes

  19. The record books won't look back on this bracket as fondly as deserved. A junior world champ is guaranteed to do no better than third place despite being head and shoulders above the competition. A previous NCAA champion is guaranteed to lose. And these three may repeat this tournament multiple times for the next decade battling for world and olympic team spots.

  20. Us? Which us? Allen Foster Dulles? Theodore Roosevelt? Whom of us treated these people poorly and deserve what we are getting? The people of Chicago whose schools were shut down to house these - according to you - people simply giving the people of Chicago what they deserve? The people of Denver whose hospital systems are claiming near collapse? Are those Denverites the ones who deserve this because they did something to the 100+ countries from which strollers are walking and swimming into Texas? Or is it the people of El Paso, Eagle Pass, Laredo, Brownsville, and every other border town who negatively affected people in 100+ countries and therefore deserve this and are just playing hot potato by passing their deserved punishment on to the those less deserving people in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Massachusetts, Denver, etc. who don't really deserve it I have a couple questions for TD3 in particular and the whole "we deserve the close and personal presence of uninvited non-Americans in our lives" crowd: - Why don't the 81 million voters/endorsers for this open border policy (Biden said he was going to do it. He did not equivocate about it) identify themselves and take in a strapping young military aged man to sleep in their daughter's bedroom, eat their food, watch their TV, drive their car, get an equal vote on all household matters, etc. while he awaits his immigration hearing? 3 million BIden-illegals leave another 78 million Biden voters with a welcoming house, food, utilities, etc. to share with their new besties. - How many illegals per day is the number we deserve? 10,000 a day doesn't seem to make you blanche. How about 20,000 a day? 50,000? When do even you say, "Ok, that XXX millionth illegal alien in the country giving us what we deserve now makes it right. Commence normal immigration law enforcement and rational policies again."?

  23. Wisconsin youth stars like O'Toole, Mesenbrink, and Hopke finding homes else where because Bono hasn't developed good relationships with Askren and others who are influential on the local youth scene. Outgoing AA Transfers: Evan Wick, Austin Gomez The whole Burwick thing was so unnecessary and certainly a reputational black eye for the program. Hamiti appears to be the exact same guy they got as a true freshman and continues to be stuck a level or two below championship contender. I think they're doing a reasonable job for a college program in a vacuum, but since their youth scene is so strong, the people of Wisconsin are right to have higher expectations for their college program. Might be time for a fresh look to make sure that is more aligned.

  27. I think people are underrating the year hamiti is having a bit 18-1 only loss 2-0 to Carr and an 84% bonus rate with a 15-0 win over fish (also a 5-3) 18-3 over hepner 2 pins over beau man, 2 majors over Cael Carlson who is having a bad year but is generally pretty tough and a 12-0 win over hall who has been great. I know he had the loss to olejnik but he lived on his legs just couldn't figure out that shin whizzer position where olejnik is outstanding.

  29. I can't believe someone would argue for experimenting on children. There is seriously something wrong with you if you think it is okay to give KIDS biologically altering drugs of any sort because of how they feel. As adults...go for it, do whatever your little heart desires to your body and chemical make-up, but doing that to KIDS is f'ing sick!

  32. Your prediction looks more reasonable. I think Gage's prediction is off a little bit. It will be good match, the 6 freshman for Ohio State will be really challenged and tested but I don't think they will back down. Big fan of both programs. Nephew was a 2 time all-American for Penn State.

  34. I agree on this take. Bartlett wrestles close matches against guys afraid to lose and he tends to win comfortably against guys who aren't afraid to open up a little bit. Mendez isn't afraid to press the accelerator to the floor. It will either work or it won't. A 3 to 1 advantage one way or the other is how I see it.

Loser could possibly get the 4 which would be wild my thoughts on how it will play out.. 1 seed will be undefeated or one loss B12 champ 2 Undefeated B10 champ (swap with 3 if Hamiti or Caliendo win) 3 Ramirez 4 Loser B12 championship

  48. Veritas - A man pursues his lifelong dream of becoming a national wrestling champion at the risk of losing his eyesight. A man... A MAN?!? That "man" is none other than LEHIGH's JON TRENGE!!! An EXCELLENT movie documentary on how he managed wrestling after having a detached retina. Which happened towards the end of January of the dual season, prior to the post season during his RS frosh year. 3X EIWA champ... 3X AA going 2,2,3... If he didn't have the detached retina happening then, Jon would 've most likely been a 4X AA, let alone a possible 4X EIWA champ. He was that good. D3
