  1. Well . . . to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, and of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter from various differentiated perspectives and without condemning another's perspective but still trying to be objective and disinterested in my analysis, and by considering each and every sound argument, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.

  2. Well, I guess positive relationships between wrestling countries when the remainder of those countries are globally at odds is not such a big deal after all. But, I'll still take the open respect between Iran and US wrestling. Wrestling is doing what Olympic sports were designed to do, bring countries together for positive competition. Even chess can't claim to be doing that.

  4. It is interesting that many headlines are talking about the geopolitical mess playing out in the Iran/US world cup game. Compare that to the positive Iran/US wrestling relationship. The wrestling community should be proud.

  9. Ben Askren (2,2,1,1; 2x Hodge; 2008 Oly Team member) or J'den Cox (1,5,1,1; 2016 Oly Bronze; World B,G,G,B,S) If you are counting folk and free, it's J'den, no doubt. Just folk makes it a much tougher call, but hopefully O'Toole will settle the debate in a few years.

  12. Same here. I got a Traeger a few years ago and my gf isn't interested in ribs, pulled pork, pork chops, turkey, or even chicken (especially thighs) any other way. She spent Thanksgiving with her parents this year and it was all she could do to keep quiet about the turkey. The funny thing is that when I pull out the slow cooker, she gives me that "are you about to boil meat?" look. I quickly put it away.

  15. How about the Unlimited bracket from 1981? Two Olympic champs ( Baumgartner and Banach) with three total Olympic golds. Gonna be hard to beat three Olympic golds in one NCAA bracket.

  16. 2018 had a couple strong ones. 125 - Four wrestlers who would go on to win 7 titles (with a shot at an 8th) in Spencer Lee(3, maybe 4), Nick Suriano (2), Nathan Tomasello (1), and Darian Cruz (1) 141 - Three wrestlers who would win 7 titles (with a shot at an 8th) with each taking multiple titles in Diakomihalis (3, maybe 4), Heil (2), and Lee (2).

  17. I wasn't paying attention, did she tell us what her major in college was or what her career path is? Hopefully it's something innocuous like fashion or interior design. Imagine if you're going in for brain surgery and she's holding the scalpel? Scary. The repeal of The Fairness Doctrine certainly hasn't helped this. I'm always amazed when I keep hearing the phrase "liberal media". Obviously, there is a spectrum of right to left in our media, but ultimately all the biggies, including ABC, NBC, CBS, most large print media, etc. are at the heart of very large corporations primarily owned by rich guys. As such they are big fans of the tax breaks and corporate welfare implemented by the Right. Simple enough for me. I've watched some old Johnny Carson reruns lately and am amazed by how he used to criticize and make fun of our political leaders of all stripes back then. Most everybody was laughing. Contrast that with the Dixie Chicks vs Bush2 fiasco, and it's only gotten much worse. I guess Joni Mitchell, Barry McGuire, etc wouldn't do very well today. Nobody would dare play their music.

  18. Unlike you, I had trouble getting woke this morning. Stayed up way too late talking with my wife, but that's always worth it. You're way overthinking this. You already have said what the reason is. The dumber the constituents or the dumber the customers, the more money they can stick in their pockets. This is true about politicians, banks, insurance companies, cable companies, and many others. They all simply want us dumb.

  19. That would be a problem if Spencer was any type of normal wrestler. But he regularly techs or pins top 20 opponents in 3-4 minutes and has even won NCAAs with blown ACL. There is no reason to think that a 60% Spencer wouldn’t pin/tech Terukina.

  20. I personally would not swap one Greco-Roman Gold for two NCAA Golds. I assume Steve gets limited mentions because there is little international discussion in general, less of Greco, and this is a college forum where Steve's best was in 5th place over 40 years ago. Let's start a discussion with the most accomplished brackets ever in college, using all credentials.

  24. To add to her legend, when she competed there were only two classes in IL and the Glenbard North sectional (the tournament that defines state qualifiers in IL) consistently would have all three qualifiers place at state + one/two would typically place at Fargo. Absolute meat grinder hotbed of talent - this was the same small geographic area that Bormet based Overtime out of to give context. And Caitlyn Chase took it to those boys to become the first female state qualifier long before separate tournaments existed.

  25. US-England drew 20 million viewers. US-Iran will also have a sizable TV audience. If and when there are a lot more Americans paying attention to wrestling, there will be much more scrutiny of our matches with Iran.

  26. You are absolutely right, and shame on me as she was there when my kids were there. If we rank based on HS achievements I think the list looks very different. Chase (first woman in IL HS history to qualify for the state tournament), Cortez (one of only 13(?) four timers, with 3 at GN), Ramos (3 timer), Gomez (3 timer) (tied for 3rd?), Assad (2 timer).

  27. These reasons are far from exhaustive, but are two primary motivating reasons behind their war on knowledge. 1. It offers a differing view to their alternate reality that they created through Murdoch's creation of Tattletale "News," as well as the criminals on AM radio. Almost everything that they offer, especially AM radio, is counter to facts and reality. In fact, one content analysis of Tattletale "News" ( it'd be even worse numbers for AM radio) showed that they say something false and/or misleading over 60% of the time. Education counters this alternate reality. 2. I may say the most important reason is because educators are aligned with unions, who are, in turn, aligned with their ultimate feared group, Democrsts. Kill education, you kill unions, and kill the Democrat party. NO BETTER evidence of this than right here in Iowa, where our GOP legislature and gubner have killed unions, and dismantled academic freedom to points to where cheap banana republics would be impressed. Neither weild any power in the state. Again, far from exhaustive, but 28 years of it has shown me these two things.

  29. I hate being a naysayer, but I can't imagine him competing at the Olympic or World level anymore. His greatest strength in NCAA wrestling has always been his top game, not his neutral game. I know he is a 4X World champ (2 Cadets and 2 JRs) but his last title was 6 years ago. I truly hope he can make it thru the NCAA season and win his 4th title. That would be a tremendous accomplishment if he can pull it off. A healthy Lee is a shoe-in for 4 NCAA titles and a smart money bet for US rep and OLY or World champ or medalist. We haven't seen that version of Spencer in a while. At this point I can't see him getting past Gilman or even others as the US rep.

  32. 2009 125lbs is another example of a third champ knocking off two previous champs. Troy beat Paul and Angel, both 2-1 Paul Donahoe - Nebraska - 2007 1st | 2008 2nd [2009 2nd] Angel Escobedo - Indian - 2008 1st | 2007 4th [2010 3rd, 2009 5th] Troy Nickerson - Cornel - 2009 1st | 2008 3rd | 2007 2nd Anthony Robles - Arizona State [2009 4th, 2010 7th, 2011 1st] 2017 184lbs is another example that ended with its third champ (Bo) in the same bracket as two previous champs. Emory Parker (Illinois) knocked Myles off early and Sammy Brooks (Iowa) beat Myles too. Bo pinned his way to the finals, including Sammy Brooks, before beating Gabe 4-3. Gabe Dean - Cornell - 2016 1st, 2015 1st, 2014 3rd [2017 2nd ] Myles Martin - The Ohio State - 2016 1st [2019 3rd, 2018 2nd, 2017 5th] Bo Nickal - Penn State - 2017 1st | 2016 2nd [2019 1st, 2018 1st] Drew Foster - Northern Iowa [2017 7th, 2019 1st] Mike Machiavello - NC State [2018 1st] 2018 125lbs is another example that ended with its third champ (Spencer) in the same bracket as two previous champs. Nick knocked off Darian, Spencer pinned Nathan, and Spencer won the title over Nick by the score of 5-1. Nathan Tomasello - The Ohio State - 2017 3rd, 2016 3rd, 2015 1st [2018 3rd] Darian Cruz - Lehigh - 2017 1st, 2014 7th [2018 5th] Spencer Lee - Iowa - 2018 1st [2021 1st, 2019 1st], Nick Suriano - Rutgers [2022 1st, 2021 1st, 2018 2nd] Who will be the fourth champ at 165 lbs in 2023 that knocks off the three existing champs?

  41. Try to avoid North Tulsa. That's where most, not all, of the gang activity and murders occur. Oklahoma has the 11th highest gun homicide rate in the USA, so be careful. The weather in March is pretty mild, mostly. Occasionally you'll have fluke cold snaps in March, but by late February winter is pretty much over in Oklahoma. Be sure to pack a decent sweater and gloves and you'll be prepared just in case a fluke snowstorm or something hits. Public transportation...lol. Oklahoma is a very backwards state beholden to the oil industry. You won't find any convenient buses to ride to sessions, so be prepared to pay for taxis, uber, or to drive yourself. Food wise Oklahoma has the same fast food places as any other American state. There are some regional brands you won't find anywhere else. I highly recommend Hideaway Pizza. They make the best pizza in the state by a country mile. One time I was in Stillwater and saw Dieringer walking out of the Hideaway over there. I said "Hey Ringer", and when he looked at me I said "What would coach Smith think if he saw you walking out of there?", and I "tut-tutted" him. He laughed. If Hideaway is good enough for a 3 time NCAA champion, it's good enough for you! Supposedly the fish restaurant "Molly's Landing" is one of the top 10 seafood restaurants in the USA. Don't ask me how a landlocked state has a top fish restaurant, I've never eaten there. There are many steakhouses in town. My favorite (The Fatted Calf) went tits up years ago, but there are many more and they are all pretty much the same. Avoid Mexican food in Tulsa, it's almost uniformly bad. I'm talking "EL Presidente" TV dinner bad. Maybe you'll get lucky and find someplace with good Mexican food, but it's pretty unlikely. If you are bringing the entire family to Tulsa, Mohawk Zoo is a great zoo in Tulsa. Seriously, best zoo in the state. If you are hankering for a (cough) "Gentleman's club" then I'd recommend Lady Godiva's. I've been there a couple times, most recently about 30 years ago. On the other hand I just read a Yelp review about Lady Godivas and from the reviews it sounds like the same girls that were dancing there 30 years ago are still there!
