Areana Villaescusa is one of a couple of WCAP soldiers my wife has had in her classes over the years. Just told her she made the semis at 55kg. She's about to watch her first UWW Worlds match.4 points

Intermat dropped their new pre-season rankings a few hours ago and Wrestlestat did the same yesterday. There were a lot of line up changes and weight changes in both sets of rankings. The biggest movers in my expected points outcomes based on Intermat rankings were Nebraska (+6.9), Lock Haven (-8.8) and NC State (-11.1). Nebraska gained through Intermat sorting out 174 - 197 after Nebraska's announcement regarding weights. Previously they had Minto, Pinto and Allred, respectively. Now they have Pinto, Allred, and McDanel. Lock Haven lost out through Noto bumping up a weight (from 125 to 133) and down in rank (from #2 to #8). NC State lost out through Ryan Jack and Jackson Arrington redshirting. As a result NC State drops from #7, with an outside shot at the podium, to #15, and a remote shot, in my rankings.2 points

This "Improve freestyle by turning it into what I'm used to (Folkstyle)" Will always be the least interesting posts on here. "I cant believe you can just be laced off the mat, thats not fair" "I never know who is winning" "In folkstyle you have to show you are better with riding time" "where's the overtime, I can't believe they have to score to win, it should go to ride-outs damnit" "I can't believe they don't wrestle a full consis bracket, why fly halfway around the world to lose opening round and be done, that's not what I'm used to" Obviously where this kind of talk gets traction, so will the "I can't believe 2 unseeded wrestlers got paired up first round, they should've changed the seeding criteria to create the kind of bracket I would prefer to see, but only at this weight, because it's unique and everything needs to go as I say"2 points

I dont know where this fits and didn't want to start a tampon thread so: Couric asked Walz about her husband being called "Tampon Tim," a nickname coined by conservatives after he signed a bill in his state that would put free menstrual products in all school restrooms, including boys' rooms. "If kids are hungry in school, what that does to brain and learning, you're not going to learn to read," Walz said. "So if you're talking about learning to read and closing gaps then you better take away the barriers for that. If that's tampons, then that's tampons, right?" Makes sense and this might explain my struggles in English class.2 points

Happy October everyone. The weather is cooling down, the kids are back in school, and that means that preseason workouts are well underway, with the season just around the corner. If you are all interested I would love to use this thread to post about 2024 college wrestle offs. Best matchups, dates of competitions, streaming opportunities, results, etc. If there is already an older thread dedicated to this, please forgive me and I can delete this topic immediately. Just trying to stay ahead of the game for the 2024 season! Happy posting, ya'll!1 point

That kid looks like he could be a monster up at 174 after a RS year. He's so long, athletic...but the few times I've seen him, he wrestles so conservatively. If he just opens up, with his defense, he's savvy...he could be a fun kid to watch. Another year from now, Birden at '74, Welsh at '84, Ryder goes up to '97, Feldman, that could be a helluva run to go with the bottom half of that lineup. I don't know if it's quite enough to beat PSU...but it's not hard to see them giving them a run. They need a couple kids to jump levels but man, they have some horses.1 point

I'm sure many of you have heard about the football coach who never punts and always onsides kicks. For those who haven't: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1849595-high-school-coach-who-never-punts-explains-his-strategy In MLB, there has been an emphasis on home runs and a de-emphasis on batting average because of analytics. In basketball, there is an emphasis on 3 point shots because of analytics. Is wrestling lagging behind the analytics revolution? 3 point takedowns have started to balance out the value of certain scoring events, but I have a hunch that there is a huge edge that is being ignored because of traditional thinking and because its risky - top wrestling. Hear me out. What % of matches does wrestler A win when he turns wrestler B for a 4 point near fall? How likely is it that after turning someone once that you are able to turn them again? How much time do we spend on top wrestling during practice? If your partners in your room are beasts on top, will you become really good on bottom, negating the risk of being turned? What if a program spent 90% of their time mat wrestling and 10% on neutral? I think neutral is the emphasis in most rooms, it certainly was in mine. Should wrestling coaches consider choosing top every time? The other possibility is a pin, which in duals has a HUGE value. The risk is an escape in most cases, so maybe the upside is greater than the risk? In basketball you only have to shoot 30% from 3 to make high volume 3 point shooting make sense. I wonder about the rates in wrestling. Long post, I know, so the summarize - is wrestling overlooking the high potential value of top wrestling while also under developing top wrestling skills?1 point

I think stamina plays a much bigger part in wrestling than bball or football fwiw. It’s hard to overlay gassing…. Or fear of gassing …… which imo is far more likely in wrestling than most other listed sports. You can change the points but you can’t change the fact that 7 minutes of wrestling is much harder than a full football game or 20 bball games. Plus you get tons of rest and can sub people in and out like crazy (football) sarcasm joke…. Maybe I’m wrong. Didn’t the Indy qb take himself out of the game for being tired this weekend lol.1 point

Looks like Intermat added at least one redshirt freshman they had missed (or assumed wasn't at that weight or wasn't the starter) in Kale Petersen of Iowa. Still no Lilledahl, or any other true freshman who did not at least wrestle in a college open in 2024, that I can tell.1 point

I know most of you are not fans of G/R... but in the 72Kg finals between France's Ghanem and Azerbaijan's Ganizade was an all-out sprint between these two. The score was 3-2 Ganizade... the decider was scored in the 1st pd. But after that scoring sequence putting the Azerbiajani wrestler ahead 2-1, Ghanem put on the afterburner until the end (Ganizade wasn't a shrinking violet either.) Violent action... pretty intense! If you want to go through and score matches, I'll gladly add it to my site so that peeps can do some analysis on it. I know a couple businesses have attempted to do this, Quant is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. It takes too much manpower to do it as you'd have to get someone to watch every match and score it to get that kind of data. You could take a program like MatBoss or Takedown to score it and output the data.1 point

They want votes. They’re buying votes. They want them to stay…. Thus the ridiculous estimate to deport. I think the report was 88m I rounded up fyi. my first ever estimate in IT I ever did in my 20s……. (Made up -#s)….. I came up with let’s say 100k to do the project. My boss said make it 10m. I couldn’t understand why until he said we don’t want to do this Project. It’s stupid. So over estimate so the business walks away. That’s precisely what’s going on here. precisely why does mayorkis still have a job? Your guess is as good as mine. He’s one of the better most reprehensible bureaucrat’s out there. Seems to be shading the truth with every word he utters.1 point

Certainly a possibility, but as an optimist, I think Provo, Knox, Norman, Abas, Stemmet and Monteiro are all day 2 guys at NCAAs and that is points and the possibility of AA. I was more referring to them as a dual team in the sense of their best team ever. People are sleeping on Knox, but having 6 or 7 guys in the top 20 is pretty dang good for them. With Valencia and Cardenas taking redshirts, it sure changes things. A lineup with Cardenas, Garvin and Valencia is a good dual team, especially when you sprinkle in those other guys. Now, I am far less optimistic with the info that NHS67 graciously shared. Program insider?!?1 point

By Thursay it'll be something new and worse. I predict they will claim he is a Martian come to take over our world. Now hear me out, look at the huuuge recent interest in Elon Musk. Everyone knows Musk is all about Mars. SpaceX just recently caught a booster rocket on "the first try." C'mon man no one has ever done that on the first try, prove me wrong. Elon has been bringing back illegal Martians for years, who do you think is working all his companies? Now he brought their leader. Sure you might say yeah but he's orange man not red man. Take any red skin Martian and bring him into our atmosphere and his skin will look orange. I rest my case. Vote Kamala 24 world domination is at stake!1 point

U23 World Team just to clarify. But in regards to his college results, he is 20-5 combined for his career. Yes, he lost 7-4 to Jack last year. But, was also pinned by Kelvin Griffin (Lehigh backup) and lost 4-1 to Cross Wasilewski (who was in HS last year). His best career win is probably over his teammate Fernandez or maybe Ethen Miller (back in January of 2022) who is 2-4 in his last two NCAAs. Hard to take that resume over Fernandez or Cornella.1 point

I think she has a solid chance to pull Winchester back in - dare I say she is even the favorite to do so. I am less high on Kilty than I am Welker this week. While Kilty has that dog in her, I think the talent gap between Welker and most of the field is far greater than Kilty and her field.1 point

Just jumped on here for the first time ( I'm at work ssshhhhhh... ) Yeah... Hafizov lost 7-1 to Bulgaria's Amaev, other than that, the "high' point was Peak's TF win over the Iranian Olympic champ... US greco crashed out like that video clip of that ski-jumper in the Wide World of Sports intro. ... And the Agony of Defeat... D31 point

US Greco ends the tournament with 1 win, feels disappointing even though medals weren't expected. Then Jacarra drops her opener to Mansi (India) Tough little stretch, women will obviously win some matches. Kilty/Welker should preform, but eh this start has me feeling less than fresh. The 2023 team was far above average because guys were trying to qualify for olympic trials and/or getting (more) international experience to gear up for trials. This year had much lower expectations because a lot of the heavy hitters have been going nonstop between free and folk from 2021 (beginning attempts to qualify for trials) through April 2024 at the trials themselves. Peaking again is a lot to ask, especially when these guys in particular have done the international stuff throughout their career. Rest assured the 2027 U23 squad will be another banner year.1 point

Cornell at 141/149: Vince Cornella (WS#15 @141, 2023 EIWA Champion, 2xNQ, 34-15 record) vs. Ethan Fernandez (WS#14 @149, 1xNQ, 34-14 record) vs Josh Saunders (U23 champion, beat Fernandez last November). Not sure if Saunders will go up or down (or nowhere).1 point
