Not worth going back to where my head was or wasn't last night. I got you now (I hope). I do now assume the first McIlravy tf/mt is, in fact, an mt as you suggest. I was trying to remember an incident from that tourney and now am sure it was then and about this bout. I had just printed out a team score and handed it to announcer Sandy Stevens. She must have announced it before I realized. Suddenly one of the Brands (probably Tom) came up to me and said the score was wrong. Eventually I figured out what he meant (I didn't hear her announce it so I didn't understand how he knew). My old tournament software from back then had a parameter I had to set to handle the tf/mt situation. It occurred to me after Tom insisted about the score that I hadn't set the parameter. I think that was only the second year of the rule. So, I'm guessing that wrestlingstats - Jay Hammond- saw the earlier win type and never changed it later. I'm not sure which of the other two tfs are the other mt but guess Williams since there appear to be more escapes. For those that might wonder how Brands would handle this- he was very calm but insistent. He waited for me to follow him then went away. I don't think he knew what the score should have been but he or someone else in the Iowa contingent knew that there shouldn't have been a .5.4 points

The problem with the Askrens is something that is on Bono to fix. That may not feel fair to him, but losing access to the best in-state prospects who are continuously generating high level talent is something the head coach has to find a way to fix.3 points

I am giving you fair warning that I am going to Claudine Gay this term unashamedly. Yes, she is now a verb. I coined that usage so don't Claudine Gay me by using Claudine Gay as a verb without properly citing me, this date, and this publication. "Say gooders". It is genius. I like it. I want it. It's mine. I am a merry ole hypocrite in these Claudine Gay (adjective usage in this case) matters.2 points

We have new rankings from Intermat. I am tingly all over. What about the ones who shall not be named? Will They? Won't They? The suspense is too much. Based on my expected points...They will not. Bummer (fantastic?) I know. My expected points are based on the average outcome by seed from 2010 to 2023. But we all know They are smarter than the average bear. So what does that look like? Well They tend to hit their seed just about spot on. I have shared these average finishes by seed before. Where others tend to miss their seed on average, They do not. So instead of using expected points for Them we could use points earned if the finish equals the seed, or in this case ranking. Based on that I have Them at 137 advancement and placement points. Normally expected bonus would give them another 24 points putting Them at 161 points. But this is not a normal year. This is the year of the THREEEEEEEE. Based on some highly questionable assumptions I think bonus points will go from 0.46 per match to 0.61 (+32.7%) this year. That gives Them an extra 7.8 points, but lets call it 8 because we have never been accused of being stingy. Now the total is 169. Oh, so close, but sorry, no. It will still take all four number ones winning it and some outperformance (or seed improvement between now and March) for Bartlett, Kasak, Mesenbrink, Truax, Nagao, and Davis (or any combination thereof). The Other Guys As for the race for second. Man has that one gotten interesting. In the pre-season the spread from second to tenth was 28 points. By then end of the year it widened to 34 points. A month later it is down to 15 points. If you tell me who is going to go on a heater in March, I will tell you who finishes second.2 points

There is a HUGE difference between policies that are systemically racist and meant to keep a certain demographic group "down" versus results of poor management of cities/areas/schools/etc. Property taxes in the areas you speak of are low because people don't want to live there, because of decisions that law makers and city officials have made to make it less appealing to live there...period!! Thus, there isn't a lot of money for the schools. Yell at the city leaders for being terrible leaders and making terrible decisions that force people to leave the city and move elsewhere. There wasn't a devious policy out there or systemic racism that is directed at keeping a certain group down, it was just bad decisions. Have there been systemic racism in our past...OF COURSE...and that is terrible but that has changed. Same goes for your supposed argument about Health Care Policy...you paint that as somehow related to policy meant to keep one group "down" over another. Health Care policy could be improved, sure, but it isn't part of this systemic racism claim you and your ilk like to throw out there. And how in the heck would an improved health care policy make it easier for someone to get a better job?? How about get a better job and get better health care?? And your attack once again on rich people and corporations is laughable...you do understand what happens when you over tax big corporations don't you...yep...people lose those good jobs you just claimed people need to get, or products people buy now become too expensive for every person in all the different demographics to buy...you'll then be yelling systemic racism again over something you ask to have happen. Do you actually even think your thoughts through, or do you just love the emotional part of trying to spew illogical and incorrect things because your ideological group tells you to? And by the way, in our society, you absolutely can have fair, but not equal! I will never be smart enough to be a doctor, nor big enough or athletic enough to play professional sports...thus I don't deserve to get paid what they do. I can work hard at other things and earn as much money as I am willing to put forth the effort to earn. Equality is about everyone having the same chance. There are policies and programs in the US that help those who maybe aren't starting at the same point as others based on uncontrolled circumstances like who their parents are and how wealthy or poor they are.2 points

Throw your own money at it. Take in some immigrants and help support them. Pay for their education and food and phone and all those luxuries you say they should have to be equal with the rich people. All talk and no action. Which is typical of your type.2 points

Hès done a very poor job recruiting WI, his biggest recruiting win has been Amos and he's from WV, and quite frankly he has been a major disappointment. Rumblings I've heard BA to the portal after his OR. I think it's time for a change, UW AD Chris McIntosh has shown little tolerance for failure. I'm hoping the fact that Mac is a former state champ wrestler, he has a clock on Bono turning it around. If he was willing to fire Paul Cryst, Chris Bono is not bullet proof.2 points

With all the talk on Happy Valley Insider and Go Iowa Awesome about whether Penn State will break Iowa’s all-time NCAA team scoring record it is time to put some stuff straight. The first thing is that Iowa fans are more fatalistic than PSU fans are optimistic. Each site ran a poll asking if this PSU team could reach 1997 Iowa’s team scoring record of 170 points. While only 18.8% of voters (13 of 69) on the PSU site thought it would happen, 30.8% of voters (45 of 146) on the Iowa site had that uneasy feeling. Both fan bases surprise me with their takes. But the real issue is… What is the team scoring record? Well, why do you ask? Can’t you just look it up? Seesh, this guy really does know nothing. I did look it up. And what I found was Lee Corso standing in my way saying, “Not so fast, my friend”. When Iowa put up their 170 team points in 1997 the rules for scoring the results of a match, for advancement, and for placement were different than they are now. Scoring 1997 v 2024 There are differences between then and now in all three elements of team scoring. Bonus - In 1997 they distinguished between a tech fall without back points (called a match termination) and one with back points (called a tech fall). A match termination was worth 1 team point, while a tech fall was worth 1.5 team points. Today they are all worth 1.5 team points. So, we need to adjust Iowa’s total by adding a half point to any match terminations (foreshadowing – this will get tricky). Advancement – In 1997 the tournament was scored as a 64-man bracket whenever there was a pig tail. Not every weight had pigtails though. Today it is always scored as a 32-man bracket with a pigtail. So, what is the difference? In a 64-man bracket everyone who wins a first round match in the championship (or consolation) bracket gets an extra point (or half point). For example, in a 64-man bracket the winner gets 5 advancement points instead of the current 4 points. Placement - Placement points for third through eighth place were also different in 1997. We will also need to adjust Iowa’s total for these differences. Putting It All Together The 1997 Iowa team loses the extra 4.5 advancement points available in their 64-man brackets at 142, 158, 177, 190, and 275. But they get an extra bonus point at 150 as Lincoln McIlravy’s 1-point match terminations become 1.5-point tech falls. They also pick up an extra 5 placement points for their sixth and fifth place finishes. Adding it all up and 1997 Iowa now has 171.5 points. That is the real point record PSU needs to shoot for.2 points

Holy crap...is that your MO...just barf out a bunch of emotional statements about what has happened in the past and that makes you feel like you made some sort of point. Did those things happen...sure...did we as a country realize it was wrong and try and fix policies so it isn't that way any longer...absolutely. People like you can scream out these emotional talking points over and over but never have a point or a fix. The US, again not perfect by any means, but sure has done A LOT to fix the bad things it had engaged in and how it oppressed people in the past. We cannot make up for what has happened in the past other than change policies for the better moving forward. What policies are in place currently that is keeping some group from gaining ground? What policies right now are in place that puts people at a disadvantage over others? How would you provide a more equal floor for every single person in the US?? Give specifics My opinion...the us will never be equal...but it is fair. Opportunities are there for all people who are willing to work hard and take advantage of them.2 points

Wisconsin produces AAs regularly. Purdon't just had their first AA in like thirty years in 2023 and should be glad to be considered Tier 4. If anything, they should swap with Northwestern who regularly produces AAs and the occasional champion.2 points

Sad looked bad but Taz looked badddddd. We may have very well witnessed the introduction of the newest member of the all-timers club. We find out in 6 months and while I will never doubt Snyder for a moment, it feels very much like when Snyder burst onto the world scene like gangbusters in 2015. Oddly enough, I think Cox's style would give Taz a run for his money but I doubt we ever see that match.1 point

Hypothetically speaking let’s say Bono gets fired, Askren, Ben or Max are hired. How long would it take for them to be Tier 2 behind PSU? 2/3 recruiting cycles? How many former AWA wrestlers hit the portal to comeback home? As stated before by others who knows if the Askrens even want to coach college. We know Ben more so than Max like the freedom to do things their way. But if I’m the Wisconsin AD, I’m making strong push. Those 2/3 years of mediocrity, what they are now, have to be worth it if flips the program around.1 point

So, someone has a different opinion and they need to leave? That tracks. How scared are you to have a conversation? I understand my privilege. I am happy to do a little extra to help people who, through no fault of their own, need a hand. If you only care about you and yours, fine. Then say it? You've all but done that already. This is why other countries don't like us. You think we can exist separate and apart from the world because we're so great. A mistaken moral superiority that we(and I mean YOU) have. Which blinds you to any blemish in our history that might threaten the opinion you hold of an otherwise flawed country. “I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.” ― James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time1 point

If he was angry about how the Starocci match played out, he shouldn't have sent his guy out there. The kid was begging to get TF'd, and it was a bit embarrassing. And, I loved how Cael basically blew him off, had no time for that BS.1 point
