Interesting information about mass shootings, including recommendations. https://efsgv.org/learn/type-of-gun-violence/mass-shootings/ MEDIA COVERAGE OF MASS SHOOTINGS The media plays a significant role in how the American public discusses gun violence. The media focuses primarily on mass shootings and other high-profile homicides, even though suicides make up three in every five gun deaths in the United States. In doing so, the media may lead the public to believe that mass shootings contribute to a large percentage of gun deaths in the United States, while in fact, firearm suicides comprise the majority of gun deaths. In fact, dying in a mass shooting is about as rare as being struck by lightning. Media coverage following a mass shooting also has implications for gun sales. For example, one study found that media coverage of mass shootings is associated with an increase in the number of firearms sold, as indicated by the number of background checks run. ... FALSE NARRATIVES There are often two false narratives that emerge in the media after a mass shooting: that mental illness causes gun violence that if more people were armed, there would be fewer firearm-related deaths. ... RECOMMENDATIONS ...We recommend the following policies: Banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines: Research has found that banning large-capacity magazines is effective at reducing mass shootings. Extreme risk laws: allow law enforcement, family, and household members, among others, to petition a judge to temporarily limit an individual’s access to firearms if they are at elevated risk of violence. Universal background checks with licensing: Background checks should be required on every gun sale and transfer in the United States, including private and online sales. Domestic violence firearm prohibitions: Many mass shootings are related to domestic violence. Laws that reduce abusers’ access to firearms are associated with reductions in intimate partner homicide and may also prevent mass shootings.5 points

I think she is thinking of a bazooka or grenade or mortar. Talk about a moron. AR-15 shoots a 0.223 inch diameter bullet. I'm thinking a deer is quite a bit bigger than that. Heck I shot a deer with a 12 gage slug (0.729 inch diameter) in MN on a farm and we had plenty of meat leftover. mspart2 points

And yet, just like on here, time and effort is wasted arguing back and forth about AR's because they look scary and yet no time and effort is spent on addressing mental health issues and all the associated gun ownership legislation. Typical emotional responses...."blame the AR!!!!" "It's a weapon of war!!!" And people sure love to argue semantics as well as claim people say things and mean things they didn't say.2 points

So let me get this straight. If you kill civilians, that is a war crime? Which war has been fought in the last 100 years that has not resulted in civilian deaths? Civilian death and property destruction is the main consequence of modern war. Israel is not targeting civilians. There is no other armed force that I know of that tries to avoid civilian deaths like the IDF. Perhaps US troops do similar. Certainly not Russian troops. So when Israel attacks, they have warned everyone what they are going to do. If civilians are present, they either were prevented from leaving or they are not really civilians. I see this as Israel having done their due diligence to prevent civilian deaths. Please show where Hamas has ever taken this tactic with regard to Israeli civilians. This is just one way to differentiate the tactics used and the intent of the two sides here. In my opinion, Hamas did not go to all out war, they went as far as to initiate an initial skirmish with civilians, not against armed forces. That is a war crime. Mowing down 270 youth at a music/dance get together is a crime, not just a war crime. Burning alive civilians in their houses is a crime, not just a war crime. What did they think would be the response from Israel? Did they think that Israel would roll over? I don't think so. I think they knew the response would be punishing and swift. I think the calculus was that other entities would come to help the fight. Hezbollah is certainly answering that call in a small way. But they were roundly condemned for their brutal and inhuman actions. And now Israel is prepared to take out Hamas as an entity. Is there a reason not to? Hamas' attacks have been constant over the years from Gaza. They had a sort of truce going on and apparently we and Israel relaxed about any violence. Then came 10/7. Israel is understandably incensed and their intent to eliminate Hamas now is also understandable. If Israel wanted to destroy civilians in Gaza, why have they historically provided, food, energy and fuel to Gaza? If Gazans and Hamas disarmed, what would be the result? Peace. If Israel disarmed, what would be the result? Annihilation. This again shows the disparate intent of the two. mspart2 points

IMO, Hyping winning a 5th title is a little disingenuous. He just career just happen to fall during an unprecedented event in NCAA history. Does anyone think any of the pervious 4Xer wouldn't have won their 5th title had they magically been granted a 5th year after winning #4?2 points

I think that is what delayed his last fight. As far as now, I think he is ok. However, he also talked about feeling like he has been in training camp almost non-stop for a couple years and he wanted to step back a little. I think he wants to work on refining some skills without the pressure of "a fight coming up in 8 weeks." I don't think athletes get a lot more skilled in camps. They get in better shape and they lose weight.2 points

Not entirely true. Switzerland has a high rate of gun ownership and low homicide rates comparable to countries with the strictest gun laws. I'm all for more regulations but we can't deny that America has a mental health crises2 points

No civilian should have access to an AR or other rifle/carbine capable of high capacity. They are designed for the sole purpose of efficiently killing humans. Any other argument is being deliberately dishonest. The US has an unhealthy fetish for these weapons.2 points

So now you're agreeing that we can restrict access to some inanimate objects, but just not these particular ones. Ok, we're getting somewhere. You pushed back on nuclear weapons and tanks, but didn't mention regular cars. Why should we restrict access to cars but not guns? As to your last question, because we literally have evidence (see: EVERY OTHER "DEVELOPED NATION") to show us that, if the access to these particular inanimate objects was restricted, the numbers of people killed would be dramatically reduced.2 points

We should do away with fossil fuels...eventually. The EV and other technologies are unfortunately nowhere near ready to handle all of the transportations/travel needs of modern human society. Largely this is due to the fossil fuel lobbies efforts to hinder advancement in that area, but it is what it is.2 points

No clue if it’s still there or owned by the same people but Taqueria El Paso in Christiansburg, VA was the best taco truck I’ve ever been to. I actually got James Green to try it when he was at VT. I don’t know how or why those guys made it to that area, but it was amazing. And I’ve lived, worked and traveled in plenty of agricultural areas where I had to speak Spanish to get by. CA, OR, WA produce and orchard country. Currently live in CO and go down to dusty towns in CO and NM all the time. Been to plenty of hole in the wall joints all over the Midwest and the western US, dozens and dozens of them, and that place is still the best. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

I misread and thought you said the best taco was from Connecticut. I can 100% believe you had an all-timer in Michigan. Midwest immigrants don't play. New Mexico/ hatch food is almost an entirely different species than the rest of the country but good god everything tastes so f'ing good and the scenery is breathtaking. That state overall is 9.1/10.2 points

Best Pizza I have ever had? A hole in the wall place called Roma Pizza in Torrington, CT. It isn't even close. The tacos? That one is close. This one isn't. What is interesting is that there is a Roma Pizza here in Miami. The owners are childhood friends with the Roma Pizza up there. They have the same exact recipes for everything. I like the pizza here. The pizza up there is all-time. It's the water, or so both owners say.2 points

Let's address the second paragraph first. I find the whole what if / hypothetical stuff to be a massive waste of time. The accusation-through-leading-question is an awful technique, as well. If you then follow it with "what? I was just asking", that is worse than blaming the ref for your own shortcomings. As for the first paragraph, the vast majority of the time a loss is not attributable to a ref mistake or a biased ref. That is what losers tell themselves so that they do not have to admit that they were second best. Failing to recognize your shortcomings is a sure path to not getting better. As for how Trump fits in this, I lost track of how many Trump nominated judges pointed out that there was no basis for overturning the election. Not exactly biased refs. At least not biased against Trump. Trump literally refuses to admit that he lost when every referee, biased for him and biased against him, says he did. Hence he refuses to get better. And it saddens me that he drags down my Republican party with him. While I am skeptical that a case in NY would have ever been brought had Trump not attempted to block the peaceful transfer of power, he did attempt to block the peaceful transfer of power. And that answers your question with regard to what happened. He has brought this upon himself. I am pretty sure he lied about his net worth to finance his businesses. I am also sure many others have done the same without getting prosecuted. But like in investing, hope is not a strategy. Hoping to not get indicted for your crimes is not a strategy. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.1 point

But it is an all-purpose excuse. If we fail to convict it is because of weaponization against us rather than a failure to make our case. Certainly possible, but very dangerous. According to the video at sentencing, she's already given a proffer of what her testimony will be. If she deviates from that, it would likely void her deal and she's back to facing the seven felonies or whatever it was she has. So, in theory, the prosecutors already know what she's going to say, and if she doesn't, she's f.u.c.k.e.d.1 point
