I was a perennial in youth (placed every year at state, won 2 state titles) and at the HS level (Mediapolis, IA) I am likely known as a bit of an underachiever considering I placed just one time at the Iowa HS State Wrestling Tournament. I ended up competing D3 for Loras College in Dubuque, IA for 3.5 years and was up and down. Had the capacity to pin the national champ at my weight, but also routinely lost to guys who weren’t even varsity. One time at the Loras Open I pinned Wartburg’s starter who had just won the Harold Nichols at Iowa State the week before and in the finals I got my butt kicked by the guy who was 3rd string behind him! I was able to effectively Hit a lot of; carries, cradles, headlocks and Merkles at every level; youth, HS and college. I Competed at Loras College until I dinged my knee in practice 4th year and while checking that, my doctor discovered I actually had hip dysplasia my entire life and ordered emergency reconstructive surgery on my hips… career was done, but my hips to this day feel like heaven and I am much more mobile now than I was before the surgery…. And that was about 15 years ago! My hips were maybe part of the reason I didn’t meet expectations in HS/college, for there were certain things I could not force my body to do… like, it felt structurally impossible trying to do them… for example: hitting a successful standup, turning the corner on high crotches, etc. seemed impossible. On the other hand, I was able to be more flexible while using my legs on top and in sprawl positions because my hips/legs would bend in ways that wouldn’t more most ppl. The PRIMARY reasons for not meeting expectations were; 1.) I thought 100X more about how to make weight than I did actually learning how to get better and 2.) I started going out/partying really hard as a Freshman in HS and this carried over to basically until I was 35 or so. I prioritized my social life above and beyond in comparison to wrestling and paid the price for it. Bright side with all that is that I’m the oldest of 4 brothers and was rather vocal to at least the youngest 2 bros who are 14 and 16 years younger than me about my experiences and always pounded it into their heads to not make the same mistakes as me. The one close to my age (Justin) was a 3X Iowa HS State Finalist/1X Champ/1X Folkstyle National Champ/2X Fargo AA who competed at UNI. The one 14 years younger than me (Shea) was a 3X Iowa HS State Placer and 4-year starter at NAIA Graceland. The youngest one (Brennan) placed 6-3-2-2 at state and after he couldn’t even get a D1 coach to email him back or respond to his applications, he initially went to Graceland University on a full ride for football (he was 1st team all state football, a 6X placer at state track in sprinting events and was even a state champ in Art of all things)… He went out for wrestling on a whim during Christmas break his Freshman year because he just couldn’t stand going to watch meets without competing… he would go on to win 2 NAIA titles there before transferring to Iowa to see what he could do at the D1 level and is in his final season this year… He’s one of these guys who may have been adversely affected by being a multi-sport wrestler who took his other sports just as serious as wrestling. That was a frustrating experience for him, but I doubt he would ever take back his football and track experiences for the world. Very happy that my brothers didn’t follow my path when it came to prioritizing wrestling/education/etc. As anxious as it makes me to merely THINK about any of the 3 doing what I did, it makes me feel that much more guilty for putting my parents through the stress I did. You live and learn I guess. Happy to at least been blessed with the chance to learn from it. Short Answer: Yes, I competed in D3 and won probably 65-70% of my matches there if I had to take a guess.5 points

Nice win for Navy over Pitt 21-12, big wins by Grady Griess, David Key, Jon Ley, Josh Koderhandt and Brendan Ferretti, I believe all upsets! Should be a top 20 team now. Great job so far for Kolat.3 points

Wrestled at a Juco for 2 years. Average to below average. Transferred to a small D1 school. Had some eligibility issues. Wrestled and lost a couple of duals, had some wins in a couple opens. Got a degree and have a decent job. Eventhough I wasn't successful at wrestling it helped me beyond belief in life. No better sport than wrestling.3 points

So you have the following (math could be wrong because kids are exhausting): Already qualified: four medalists at 2023 worlds + winner of true 4th (bronze losers wrestle-off) = 5 2 gold medal contestants per weight for continental qualifiers x 4 continental tourneys. 8 more competitors + 5 previous= 13 total 2 last chance finalists + 13 previous = 15 total 2 last chance repechage bronze wrestling for final spot true-fourth + 15 previous = 16 total I believe the host country France also gets a spot to any bracket they choose that is not already qualified but that needs to be verified because the IOC sucks, so one bracket will be 17 in that event.2 points

There are 75 teams, split into six regions (numbered 1-6, pretty similarly to how NCAA Division II is structured, but with some differences in the locations of teams...for example, Bluefield State is in Region 2 for women's, but Region 3 for D-2 men's). I believe, but am not sure, each team can enter 15 wrestlers into the regional tournament, and the top four from each region per weight qualifies for nationals.2 points

Watched the match on Youtube and had to rewind to figure how it was 3-0 after the first TD. I was looking for where the penalty point was when I remembered the 3 point TD. This match also make clear to me how much the pushout rule changes wrestling.2 points

I did not see Griess over Pitzer coming. I have viewed Griess as a guy that beats the guys he is supposed to and loses to the guys he is supposed to. This might be a breakthrough victory for him. Nice win.2 points

Neither of those schools are interested in having a wrestling program. The University of North Texas (UNT) had a club team that was run by Andre Metzger and he finally got tired of hearing them say "No thanks" that he left.2 points

Some interesting transitive results here. Howard loses to Gallagher and Ryder. Both of them lost to Army’s Charlie Farmer. His only loss so far this year was to last year’s D3 national champ Joziah Fry (who spent time at Campbell and had some decent wins)2 points

I can sympathize with this! I wrestled D1 and made it to the NCAA tournament 3 times… never AA’d though. I know how hard I had to work to even just get there, so I feel bad for all the guys falling short of their goals and then having to hear crap from us fans! I’m sure it’s much worse today with social media… it’s probably hard for the athletes to avoid2 points

Was a multiple placer and state finalist in middle school , underachieved some in hs , 1x SQ, , Wrestled D3 for a top 25 school for 2 years , they went out of way to help me get in and get me set up bc I was on my own , Unfortunately they should’ve just enrolled me in clown college for the way I acted the first year …spent way too much time partying and making 6-7 hr round trip drives home to see my GF , …locked in 2nd year ,made nationals ,won a match ,but working full time /class full time and wrestling full time was too much , that summer got offered a job making real $$ so I left to join the real world …still regret passing up those 2 years I have an impressive hit list of guys that have beat me though lol, Lost to Molinaro and Darrion Caldwell in high school, Alex Meade my first open tournament, beat D3 NC before he was champ Vincent Renaut , also beat Former Rutgers heavyweight Billy Smith before his growth spurt up to heavyweight ,i also once headed locked jimmy Sheptock, got the 2 , he rolled thru and proceeded to beat the daylights out of me for the next 5 minutes2 points

Great thread. I love hearing about everyone's wrestling history, from solid DI guys to JV stars. And it seems most have common themes - suffered and loved it, never as good as I wanted to be, too many injuries. It feels like I stumbled into a bar where people are actually interested in hearing about my "glory years", so I'll keep blabbering. Beat a handful of DII and DIII All Americans in college but never made it to nationals. 3-0 as an alumni v. my college in my forties (mostly shows how much the program declined) Beat Steve Mocco in Judo (he was in HS at the time, but placed in US Judo senior nationals the next year). I actually pinned him ( technically a hold down in Judo) Won Pan Am gold medal in BJJ (brown belt in my age divisions, not quite as impressive as it might sound to wrestlers, but still pretty good)2 points

I've always been baffled as to why D2 and D3 guys don't wrestle in more opens where there are D1 Guys? It rarely happens but why wouldn't you want to challenge yourself against this level as a measuring stick? There are plenty of opens in the Northeast where you can see how you stack up. I know Cortland has competed in the Binghamton open but rarely do you see this and I'm not sure why?1 point

I don't see any extra year for Griess. It's very rare that any service academy does this and when it's done, it is in response to something that prevents one from completing the four-year course in 4 years like a major health crisis.1 point

We're only a couple weeks into the season, but I wanted to come back and update this, mostly so that I can point out the guys that I missed. How are the guys that I pointed out doing so far? 125) Marc-Anthony McGowan - Princeton - True Freshman. Anybody know what's up with him? Guess he's greyshirting? 133) Nic Bouzakis - Ohio State - RS Freshman. Rocky start. Loss to Latona I would expect but took two losses to tough but not upper echelon opponents at Clarion open. Has a lot of things to work on still. 141) Mac Church - Virginia Tech - True Freshman. Hasn't wrestled. 149) Michael Gioffre - Virginia - RS Freshman. Not a strong start. 4-3 with a couple of bad losses in there. 157) Meyer Shapiro - Cornell - True Freshman. Looking good. 165) Nick Hamilton - Virginia - RS Freshman. OK start, not great. 2 losses to unranked guys and might have picked up an injury. 174) MJ Gaitan - Iowa State - RS Freshman. Looks sharp, albeit against light competition. 184) Bennett Berge - SDSU - RS Freshman. Hasn't wrestled. 197) Luke Geog - Ohio State - RS Freshman. Looks very good, handled a tough Andy Smith fairly easily. Missed some training with a small injury in the month leading up to the season so gas tank not quite there yet. 285) Dayton Pitzer - Pitt - RS Freshman. Took a loss to Navy's heavyweight, which I wouldn't have expected. Early days still. Who did I miss? 125) Ryan Crookham - Lehigh. Obviously. Two top ten wins in one weekend, including against the world and NCAA champ... 165) Antrell Taylor - Nebraska. Kid looks very sharp, possibly the next James Green? 197) Mac Stout - Pitt. I mentioned him briefly... looks the part. Wish Geog would've been ready to go for Clarion so we could've seen that matchup. 197 is absolutely loaded.1 point

On Friday night, the biggest dual of the young collegiate season took place with #7 Ohio State traveling to #3 Virginia Tech for a colossal non-conference clash. The Buckeyes came into the bout as a ten-point underdog, based a gambling site that set odds on the dual. That went out the window immediately after Buckeye 125 lber Brendan McCrone shocked returning All-American Eddie Ventresca in the opening bout of the evening. Our Big Ten correspondents (Kevin Claunch and Ryan Holmes) got together with our ACC correspondent (Robbie Wendell) to rehash the events of the evening. Robbie was on site for the shocking 24-12 win for Ohio State. That wasn't the only Big Ten vs ACC dual from the weekend. WrangleMania also featured NC State taking nine of ten matches from Purdue (though Purdue's lone win was a big one). Here's what the correspondent's thought about this weekend's action. Just a little fun fact for everyone who couldn’t wait to come at Robert Howard …on November 12, 2018 Anthony Caesar competed for the first time in 2 years and after 2 shoulder surgeries, in his second match he was taken down 4 times and ridden like a mule in a 11-8 lose to Bucknells Garrett Hoffman also add Howard was only able to hit the mat and start rolling around Mid Summer , so I’d say there’s a substantial amount of rust he needs to work through , and I’m 100 percent positive Cael Sanderson is smarter than everyone on this forum when it comes to wrestling and I’m sure he knows what he’s doing pretty funny , did u wrestle in college post ? you see a bunch of people pointing out how hard wrestling is and how we shouldn’t come after guys so hard and the same people liking those posts put on their track shoes to run over here and hate on Howard in early November lol1 point

I think Crookham should be 1st. If it was just a dual and he pulled an upset over the #1, I’d say it’s not enough to put him that high. But he won a tough tournament and also beat the #6. If rankings are to reflect current results (which they are), I’d say he’s #11 point

Yep-it seems exactly as if they signed him to a contract and are giving him the shittiest assignments possible to try to get him to quit, but he knows if he just shows up, the checks will keep coming in. I don't know why anybody thought WWE would suddenly care about Olympic wrestling credentials and why this would be a better career choice than continuing to be the best freestyle HWT wrestler in the world.1 point

The NAIA team I was on had a dual meet with IU and SIUE, along with going to the Michigan State Open Let me tell you there was a reason we were at an NAIA school and not going D1, the above highlighted those reasons..... not fun1 point

I don't mean for this to sound snarky, but a lot of these folks chose Division II and Division III for a reason. They like wrestling, they enjoy competing, but while there are serious wrestlers at that level, not everyone's going to want to go out there and compare themselves to a level of wrestling they chose not to compete in. How do we know these guys aren't proving themselves just trying to break the starting lineup at these smaller places? I was announcing the St. Cloud State intrasquad last week and I interviewed the winners afterwards and asked a few what their season goals were - the ones I asked that question to all said their first goal was to just start. Division II and Division III have different rules in terms of access to their coaching staffs, offseason training, etc. Also, since those matches don't count for D1 athletes in the qualification system we currently have (they do count for overall and career records), a number of D1 coaches don't want too many non-D1 athletes in a field.1 point

Better for those without, yes. I support universal healthcare so long as I can still elect to pay for private care, and UBC is paid by existing tax revenue. The gov doesn’t deserve another cent from me until it passes a balanced budget for its core services.1 point

Second post, as I enjoy the discussions but usually lack the knowledge to add anything substantive. Was a pretty decent HS wrestler, but never placed at the state tournament. In college, walked on at one of the academies (not hard to do back then). Survived as a wrestling room dummy for a year and a half. While I cut weight in HS, soon realized it was at a different level in college. Plus the academics and life at the academy were taxing enough for me. However, will never forget my time in the wrestling room with HOF’er coach Ed Peery and Captain (USMC) Lloyd Keaser, who was an assistant coach as he trained for the 76 Olympics. Sidebar story - Keaser was also a PE instructor who we had for self defense instruction - a perfect fit! This day the lesson was escaping from a front choke hold. Recognizing me from the wresting room, he selected me to demonstrate on. However, he was the one to apply the front choke hold and I was to escape. Needless to say, I am happy to still be alive today!1 point

Deleting posts is difficult. You have to lay some flowers at Bob's grave site in Arlington or at 1035 N Maple in Russel, KS after which you have 15 minutes to delete the post. Good luck.1 point
