  1. But it’s that time. Just asking for prayers and positive vibes today. A very special person is starting another phase in what’s been a really tough battle, bad news just when you think the going is good, and it’s only going to get tougher. If you could do me a favor and do two things today: take 30 seconds to manifest some positive vibrations however you do; and take advantage of any opportunity you have today to enjoy life. Rasta out

  3. Come from a wrestling family where I was battling my dad for 3rd string on the family team. Good HS career and lucky enough to start for a couple of years (about .500 record) at a low-level D1 school which has greatly improved and now pops into the rankings from time to time. We had 1 NCAA qualifier in my 4 years there. They now have at least 3 or 4 a year. Was very dedicated in HS (FR/GR, Cedar Falls, working out in off-season, etc.), but once conference tourney in college ended (I never sniffed NCAA qualification) my only lifting was the 12 and 40 oz. variety until September. My college experience set me up for a nice professional career and I did a lot of catching up on the social side of things since I was a lightweight (literally and figuratively) in HS. I had a funky/unique style that I wish I would’ve developed more in the off-season, but that’s life. Still follow wrestling now where I live. Would like to get more involved when my younger kids get older (older son was not really interested), but we’ll see what they want to do.

  4. I was a three year starter at Virginia Tech. I had the pleasure/displeasure of Kevin Dresser being our GA, lol. With me being a 134/142 lber, Coach Dresser beat the crap out of me everyday for one year. On a serious note, Coach Dresser is a great man and did apologize years later for the "lessons" he taught me, lol. I grew up in the Hampton Roads area, it was a very good area for high school wrestling in the 70s/80s/90s.

  5. Yup. Loved it. Never won a title so it was a bit of a bust at the time(never really came all that close). In the years since I realized as I see old teammates a couple of times a year and then saw my Cousin have much more success than I did and then my 2nd Cousin who's only a 7 years younger had a WHOLE lot more success and do well at the D1s, I accomplished more than just my Win-Loss record. They knew it was possible. Got school paid for, lifelong friends... experiences.

  6. I started 4 years at Penn competed twice in the NCAA tournament. In 1975 I won my first round match and separated my shoulder defaulting out. It was the first injury and first time I ever missed a match because of one. I lost in the NY state finals to Jack Spates. I'm a big supporter of Penn wrestling and I'm on the EIWA Hall of Fame committee.

  7. No One Talks About the Pinfelled Sure David Taylor had 11 pinfalls in his illustrious NCAA tournament career. Everyone knows that. And a few of you probably even know that Sylvester Terkay, Mark Perry, and Corey Olsen each had 8 pinfalls in their time at NCAAs. But how come no one is talking about Zack Giesen's 8 NCAA tournament pinfalls? Oh yeah, right. It is probably because he was on the wrong end of 7 of those. But don't get me wrong. He may be my new favorite wrestler. Zach Giesen wrestled for Stanford from 2008 - 2011 and won 110 matches, ending his career 4th on Stanford's all-time list. He was an All-American in 2011 finishing in sixth place. In high school he was a four timer while also earning three letters in football along with an all-state honor. In short, the dude was a stud. And somehow he still found himself staring at the lights an amazing 7 times. Let's be clear about one thing. Zach Giesen was a better wrestler than just about everyone on these forums. But there is more. He is also smarter than all of us. There are a lot of brains to go with that brawn. That is Dr. Giesen, to you. He is now a Dr. of Osteopathic Medicine specializing in invasive cardiology. Holy crap. Pinfalls - The Dark Side Honorable Mention. You can only get pinfelled a maximum of three times in any one NCAA tournament. No fun, I know. Of course that also means you are an All-American. So there is that. Between 1988 and 2021 there were two wrestlers to earn All-American the hard way. In 2017 Zac Brunson finished sixth while getting pinned three times. He was notable for getting pinned twice by the same wrestler, Brain Realbuto, in the quarters and in the fifth place match. But don't say he didn't learn anything. After getting pinfelled in 1:12 in the quarters he took what he learned there to make it to the 1:15 mark in the fifth place match. In 2016 Alec Pantaleo also finished sixth while getting pinfelled three times. I imagine that tournament left a bad taste in his mouth as his three pinfalls were in a row. After making it to the semis he went pinfall, pinfall, pinfall. Ouch, ouch, ouch. The good news for Pantaleo is he was never pinned again on his way to subsequent fifth and third place finishes.

  8. Started out playing D1 Soccer. Transferred to another university . Based on the timing of my transfer I could only play one more season of soccer. I decided to concentrate on my grades. I knew a couple of the guys on the wrestling team. Started working out with them just to stay in shape. Ended up being a walk on for the team. Had enough eligibility to wrestle D1 for 2 seasons. But, my dad made me maintain a 3.5 to stay on the team. Never got injured till me senior year. Tore cartilage in one knee and separated a shoulder. Still wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

  9. I was a mediocre high school wrestler. I ended up going to school at UW-Madison (not for wrestling) but didn’t want my competitive days to be over so decided to try and walk-on even though I knew it would be a long shot. I still remember the first time we went live in preseason thinking holy shit I feel like I’m going to die! Anyway, I initially got cut and was kind of just content with the opportunity to be in the room. But Barry Davis, who was the coach at the time, said something to me like you can come back and wrestle with us once the season is over. That kind of surprised me, like he actually noticed me during preseason. Those words were enough motivation that I really trained my butt off and came back once the season was over. I trained with the team in Spring and summer and was able to walk on my last two years of school. Mostly I was beat up each practice but every now and then would get a takedown on a good guy and make him upset enough to really beat me up! Being in the room for my last two years of school is probably the most formative experience I’ve had in my life and one I’m grateful for.

  10. Wrestled d3 for 3 years until I got hurt. Doctor said if I want to be able bodied later in life it was time to retire. I was 0.500 spot starting for a top 10 team nationally. Was never a threat to AA or anything like that. Someone made this joke earlier so I’ll steal it as it was good ….. best thing I never want to do again. this was the late 90s and the weight cutting was brutal. Hopefully they don’t cut like that any more. I don’t let my son cut weight. I help coach the local kids team.

  12. Had the opportunity to wrestle in college, in the PAC-10 conference (there were 10 schools at that time). Got to travel the country and even wrestle overseas. It was the toughest 5 years of my life is some ways but also the best 5 years of my life in others. Still haunted by some ghosts of "what if" but thankful for all the experiences. Got to wrestle at NCAA's 3xs and had the opportunity to be pinned by Cael at the 2001 NCAAs in Iowa City. I know my GPA and studies suffered due to all the energy I put into wrestling. However, if I was to be honest with myself I know I would have focused that energy into some other non academic venue if I hadn't wrestled.

  13. Wrestled at Penn 1989-1993. Mostly known for being injured - I broke my foot, blew out my left ACL and broke my jaw during my sophomore, junior and senior years, respectively. College and college wrestling was the most fun I never want to have again. Better GR/FS wrestler than Folk. Dabbled in open meets until my work career took me to FLA in 1998 and effectively ended my wrestling career

  14. I wrestled at Purdue for 3 years! I was a good HS wrestler who unfortunately was more interested in partying and being the man at night, not in the room, once I hit college. The lifestyle is incredibly demanding. 3 lifts, 7 practices, and individuals throughout the week in season. You don’t go home for winter break or summer vacation. You have to live and breathe Wrestling or you’re going to have a very bad time. Looking back I’m filled with lots of regret, but Ersland and Purdue wrestling helped shaped the man I am… it is what it is. I don’t drink now to make up for the lost time.

  15. Now listen here guys and gals this here is one of those threads that merits strong consideration of the best of the best and the toughest of the roughest and that means that you need to think outside of the box n look straight up to the fella willing to do the dirty work to get the roof done now Tom and Terry tried to run a fella like that out of town once already and that's a real shame because that's the teammate you need when you are gambling with your legacy and you can't deadlift your way out of the foxhole but that's okay because I'm sure that type of fella is still walking among us and probably even sneaks in a few PBRs then takes his old lady to the stabbin cabin and that's the kind of legend that always needs to live on if you know what i mean and you know what i mean

  18. Surprisingly, I found myself at the state level during my first two years, even though I lost 65% of my matches – there's even amusing video evidence featuring rat tails and tears. Despite the rocky start, I managed to go undefeated and clinch the 8U title. I medaled in even-aged years moving forward. I considered myself a technical wrestler, understanding many moves but struggling with the sheer strength required for high school competition, especially at 135lbs (14 years old) and 145lbs (15 years old). Puberty and weight changes brought some success at 160lbs and 171lbs, which led to the humbling experience of getting pinned in the state finals. My claim to fame is beating a guy in high school who beat a guy in high school who beat Ben Askren in college. I opted for college baseball closer to home, choosing a path near my sweetheart. I later transferred to a D1 school and represented my fraternity in intramural wrestling. I dabbled in local high school and club coaching. I've had my fair share of humbling moments, whether facing college wrestlers at Old Timer tournaments, participating in alumni events, or last Tuesday at club practice. My son quit wrestling after two seasons and three competitions... I thought, 'This is life'... then my gymnast daughter started wrestling as a sophomore and loves it. The opposite of me, she wins from strength rather than technique.

  19. Started wrestling as a FR in HS. Had many injuries derailing my SO/JR years, but managed to place at state my SR year (D1 Wisconsin). I wrestled D3 for 1 season. Being made of glass and struggling to balance schoolwork + social life with athletics caused me to lose my fire for competition.

  22. Second post, as I enjoy the discussions but usually lack the knowledge to add anything substantive. Was a pretty decent HS wrestler, but never placed at the state tournament. In college, walked on at one of the academies (not hard to do back then). Survived as a wrestling room dummy for a year and a half. While I cut weight in HS, soon realized it was at a different level in college. Plus the academics and life at the academy were taxing enough for me. However, will never forget my time in the wrestling room with HOF’er coach Ed Peery and Captain (USMC) Lloyd Keaser, who was an assistant coach as he trained for the 76 Olympics. Sidebar story - Keaser was also a PE instructor who we had for self defense instruction - a perfect fit! This day the lesson was escaping from a front choke hold. Recognizing me from the wresting room, he selected me to demonstrate on. However, he was the one to apply the front choke hold and I was to escape. Needless to say, I am happy to still be alive today!

  23. I struggled in high school in the greater Cleveland ,Akron area in Ohio. I was 16 starting my senior year. Highest finish in any tournament was 3 rd. Missed going to state by one match. My district was tough . State champ ,3rd and 5th place finishers ( I finished 4th). In college attended a Junior college. Had 50 wins. Placed 2nd at CKLV Tournament to Joe Tice. Qualified for nationals twice. Placing 6th. Went into coaching wrestling. Did well. Lots of state champs and 2 all-American's. At 41 I laced the shoes up and along with taking 60 youth wrestlers from our state entered in the Open Div. at the AAU Nationals. After several wins and a pin I was in the finals against a 2 time Div.1 all-american and NCAA Champ Keith Stearns . Lost to Keith 4 to 2 in overtime in the finals.

  24. Was a fair to middling wrestler on a top 10 D2 team. It was late 80s to early 90s and we actually had D1 national qualifiers. I beat d1 starters and lost to d3 backups lol. I'm not sure if the difference in talent between divisions was as pronounced back then. I wrestled some Greco, made a decent account of myself against some highly ranked guys. Came out of retirement at an open when I was 33. Took 2nd out of 20 ish. Beat some college guys, lost 4-0 to a pretty decent post-collegian. Was whole body sore for over a week AND got staph!

In the second he got a reversal in 2 to2. 3 rd period I took down but I could not escape. Tied 2 to2 . Overtime. Late in the first period he took me down . Keith won 4 to 2. Good match.

  29. High school and college. There's nothing better than wrestling teammates for friends. My favorite story involved a wrestling teammate in college who put up posters around campus advertising a match between a bear and me at a local mall. Peer pressure being what it was, I agreed. When the time came, I showed up in my sweats, headgear and singlet, but the bear was a no-show. The mall manager said that he had stepped on glass the week before at another mall and therefore had to forfeit. Man 1, Beast 0.

  32. So I started doing the whole doctor thing this week. That thing you do when you get old and have to actually put in an effort to stay alive. I don’t even know what else to say about that. It’s just this reluctant acceptance of the beginning of the later stage of life that has been on my mind lately. Then I think about how I want to live as many of those later years as I can. So why should I let the thought of it affect me negatively? I’d rather just enjoy life in the moment. I’m just getting warmed up, baby! It’s week two of wrestling and my football team fired that jobber Josh McDaniels. Things couldn’t be better. Now to your questions! Which weight class do you feel is the most wide open this season for a new NCAA champ? Kevin Claunch, Michigan Spymaster Well, I’ll narrow it down by picking any weight that doesn’t have a returning champ. So that takes out three, but I’ll just substitute 197 for 184 and make it four classes out. You can also toss out heavyweight because Kerk is a returning finalist and Gable apparently located his shoes. Let’s also toss out 141, 157, and the aforementioned 184 since they also have returning finalists in the mix. That leaves us with 125 and 149. And they are intriguing! 149 is a bit top-heavy but 125 is just a mess of guys. You’ve got a mix of guys who have gutted out the Spencer Lee-era and a nice crop of fresh faces ready to make the leap. Literally, any of the top ten guys can make the finals. And that’s not counting Brayden Palmer, who beat the high school kid, who just beat the top-ranked guy, who beat Spencer friggin’ Lee just under eight months ago! Noto-Figs-Ventresca-Peterson-Poulin-Ungar. These guys want to show everyone that they are the guys here now. Guys like Barnett, McKee, and DeAugustino have been stalwarts here for years and they know damn well they have a chance at that title this year. 125 will be the most wild and unpredictable bracket this March. Not a doubt in my mind. If takedowns are now three points, why aren’t escapes 1.5? Doesn’t the sport need more decimals? Regular Guy Good question. We do need more decimals. And more decibels while we’re at it. I’m still not sold on the new scoring, but there’s certainly more scores of 14-5 than there used to be. Which freshman debut most impressed you last week? Dr. Rhino None of them. Alright, maybe a few. For starters, I’m fully on the Rocco Welsh wagon. I actually wish I was Rocco Welsh. I also sometimes wish I was Raquel Welch. Rutgers freshman 133 Max Hermes also had a nice little run at the Princeton Open and put up 41 points in four wins while falling to Rider veteran Richie Koehler 6-2. Kannon Webster had a nice debut with a tech and folks will be certainly keeping an eye on his five-date redshirt rule thing or however that works. Of course, the big story was the performances of a trio of high school kids who had runs through the Clarion Open. In a record-setting 14-hour-long tournament without a break, Bo Bassett, Marcus Blaze, and Jax Forrest made it one of the most fun opening tournaments in years. My guess is that Bo probably slept in until about 5:15 on Monday morning. He certainly earned it. With the first women’s dual meet happening in Carver-Hawkeye, how long before we see a Scuffle/Midlands men’s and women’s division tournament? The Kid Smoke Drip Costanza Midlands had one last year, and would’ve had one the year before had they not canceled. Seton Hall Pirate Bad look for me. The Kid Smoke Drip Costanza Don’t beat yourself up over Pirate sticking his nose in there. The truth is that I forgot that they had it last year. But I also forgot what I had for lunch yesterday, so that might be a problem on my end. It’s possible I’ve also had too much smoke drip Costanza. I’m sure as the sport grows on the women’s side of the D1 level we will see more tournaments co-hosting them and even some more Opens of their own. Headed to England for the Phillies-Mets games next June? Kevin McGuigan Oh jeez, I don't even want to think about baseball and forgot this was even happening. Bryce Harper and Pete Alonso should show American unity by parading the Liberty Bell around the Brits like a trophy. Thoughts on Rutgers’ 2024 signing class. Dan Seifring Not bad. My guys are doing a good job hitting the other states and I’ve heard a lot of good things about Conner Harer. Alex Nini has always been a guy I thought had immense talent and should fit in nicely. Ryan Ford is Coach Dom trained. That’s good enough for me. Will Steveson get his head or his retired shoes cut off in the first episode of college duals? JP Pearson It would be funny if he just wrestled the entire season barefoot as a bit of a nod to the sacred tradition of leaving your shoes on the mat as a way of saying goodbye. Then he can still honor tradition while still wrestling. Sort of like a loophole. I also want multiple backflips after every match now. No more leaving us wanting more. It’s the last chance we will get to see the show. Give ‘em the works. These are my terms.

So I was initially going to answer no to the thread's question, but now that I see people are including their intramural experiences, I guess I did have a brief collegiate experience the one time I entered the intramural tournament (I went 1-1).

  38. I gotta be honest, in my head I assumed that most of the board was former college guys and that my career wouldn't stack up, looks like D1 backup isn't as far down as I would have thought, also kudos to anyone else that did it, it is a ton of work, and the talent level is so far above high school

  39. I won a jv tourney in grade school and kind of down hill after that. But I was not smart enough to see that I should have moved on. At least there is a silver lining for those of us who stayed too long: it is an interesting sport where you meet and get to know interesting people - and witness many wrestlers doing heroic things.

  46. No D1 offers for me. Wanted to study mechanical engineering so did not want to go D2/D3/NAIA route which were the only schools that recruited me. No club wrestling team at my college but that would have been fun.

  47. I wrestled at a now-defunct NAIA school and was below average wrestler I had a great time though! We were a Hard Knocks kinda program (alot of D1 got kicked out because of drugs transfers) and the school was throwing money at athletics (we had two wrestling houses and the country's ugliest football field)

  48. Wasn't near good enough to wrestle in college. I now live vicariously through other great wrestlers.
