The transition will be a bit painful logistically, but I fully expect it would smooth out. And then - the weight cutting aspect of the sport would be greatly reduced. Less misery, more focus on actual wrestling.4 points

It hurts the athletes, but it also hurts the governments tremendously. In countries that don’t have the sort of athletic infrastructure that the US does, the olympics are professional sports, but more importantly a major rallying point to drum up nationalism and simultaneously drown out domestic issues. This is why the Olympics are so important to a country like China. Olympic success is part of a much more internecine machine that empowers the incumbent rulers and regimes. Countries that are top-down oppressive rely on events like the olympics to serve as justification for rallying cries and domestic propaganda. The olympics are not the same thing to all countries.4 points

I think that this is the old mind set. If you are wrestling in at your walking around weight there is no worrying at all about monitoring weight or even what you are eating drinking the night before. Much easier to enjoy yourself before, between and after matches. Many of the issues people have with matside weigh-ins are based on the theory that wrestlers will be cutting weight in the same manner and they will still be looking to drop down weight classes thinking they will be bigger/stronger than their opponents (or at least the same as their opponent who is also cutting weight) If matside weigh-ins don't drastically change wrestling's attitude toward weight management, there is no point in doing it.3 points

T Sometimes while walking or biking I pencil out a simulation using 3d models to develop or improve wrestling techniques. The simulation would have to be really good. It is the minute details that separate success from failure.2 points

there are still states that don't require hydration testing and body fat analysis to determine minimum weight classes (a physician can sign off on any weight class they want). there are still states that allow additional weight allowances for mid-week matches (after school days), which is an improvement (I guess) from morning "honor" weigh-ins. since the rule in HS sets a maximum time prior to competition, and not a minimum, nothing in the rules currently prevents a HS coach from stating that their weigh in will be immediately prior to the match starting (after warm ups, even after the anthem is played). not quite matside, but close. with some 2-day tournaments not doing 2nd day weigh ins (or granting greater allowances) and most top seeds getting byes or easy early matches (and often not for 3-4 hours after weighing in), there remains significant incentive to cut as much weight as possible, within the existing guidelines of your state. until you get finalists to agree to just step on a scale for curiosity sake, it will remain anecdotal evidence of one kid weighing 12-15 pounds more than his opponent. matside weigh in would self govern excessive weight loss. it would not increase overall time of a dual (would actually save a school money, since the bus need not arrive 75 minutes before start time). we already weigh in wearing singlets, so simply add 1-2 pounds for shoes to all weight classes...and allow the needed 10-15 seconds to put on a headgear after getting off the scale and heading onto the mat. as noted, a plan for tournaments could include alternate round weigh-ins with additional weight granted, such that a finalist could gain 2-4 pounds...but not 8-12. I know I am in the minority here, but would also prefer, in conjunction with matside, locked line-ups for duals and greater value awarded for forfeits. as with most proposals, if you allow ONLY coaches to provide the guidance, nothing will ever change.2 points

don't lose the first round of a tournament if you don't want to be making weight that many times. also, remember that now everyone is presumable wrestling at a more natural weight, so making weight shouldn't really be a chore at this point.2 points

Not a fan of this idea. I think it creates some messes and is not as spectator friendly as some may think. We just cut high school weight classes in many states, largely because of "too many forfeits." Matside weigh-ins would increase the number of forfeits. Some have even suggested weighing in for every round of a tournament or a quad. This would be an absolute disaster with kids worried about every bite of feed or drop of water. The number of kids making multiple weight checks per hour would be absurd. I am also a guy who cut a ton of weight and did not let my son do it. I am mostly opposed to weight cutting. However stepping on a scale once per day is plenty. I don't mind making it closer to match time (30 minutes?), but matside would be a mess.2 points

I’ve been around the sport for almost 30 years at this point and I’ve heard “matside weigh ins” thrown around since I got started. Not once have I ever seen it. I ask this openly to the board, how can something solve a problem when we have next to no tangible practice or data to support it. I hear people clamoring for it, but where does it actually occur?2 points

...who the fck is wondering that? IF he did it, is it worth prosecuting and putting him in jail? Oh...and those precious tax dollars...that would get spent either way. You're actually a guy who is equating a sexual assault with a punch in the face somehow and...if punching someone in the face doesn't get you jail time, well...then neither should rape or sexual assault, right! Boys will be Boys! There's a reasonable balance we're trying to find between condemning and punishing people for allegations of sexual assault and what the fallout SHOULD be vs what it has been while the facts slowly come out(Trevor Bauer, Quintez Cephus, etc...) but you're not even doing that. You're just saying, 'eh, even if it did happen, is it really a big deal?2 points

Here is the unpopular opinion.... take football out of the NCAA altogether and have the BCS run the whole thing. Schools can lease the school name, facilities and stadiums back to the teams to create revenue for the school and the BCS can run wild and unhinged with whatever they want to do. Yes, it becomes like arena football leagues..... should be very successful without the NCAA part of it involved.... or would it?2 points

There’s also reports it was actually Hamas bombed the hospital. Who the hell knows, but there are two things we know for sure in this situation: one is taking the first report we see and embracing it as completely accurate is not a good game plan, and the other is that either side is capable of doing some things here that we have a hard time fathoming.2 points

Besides ankle bands, Wrestlers still need to report to the head table and check in, then meet the ref at the scale that is mat-side then go to the center of the mat. Boom, that's where the extra time comes from. There is still time in between matches between check-in and getting the wrestlers to the center of the mat. Again, as I said at lower levels I agree that mat-side weigh-ins would be a great idea to help with retention/burnout. At the highest levels like D1 athletes, I do not see weight cutting being a huge issue, and is actually managed very well with 1-hour weigh-ins. I would be all for 30-minute weigh-ins if people are of the belief weight cutting is a huge issue in D1 wrestling.1 point

I do not see how this is beneficial for the wrestlers or especially the viewers. Weighing in 4 times in one day seems very extreme. No one wants to see a tournament decided because Wrestler A misses weight in the finals after making it 3 previous times. Another issue is that you are adding roughly 3 minutes per match. At the high school level, I think the idea of spending 10 hours in a gym on a Saturday is a real deterrent to participating in the sport.1 point

Hey man... I conceded the argument. That said... they legitimately just added a bunch of stupid-ass sports simply because they will get US viewership. If the USOC pushes it, it might get life. I don't think they will, though. Unless they want to compete better in the Winter Olympics as far as Golds and total medals. We haven't finished Top three since 2010 and that was a 3rd place finish as a nation. 2006 we were 2nd and 2002 we were 3rd as well. Since then we haven't finished Top 3.1 point

Indiana head coach Angel Escobedo sat down with Ryan Holmes to talk about all things Hoosier wrestling. The two discuss navigating the transfer portal, which this offseason has netted All-American Brayton Lee, originally an Indiana high school star. Escobedo points out some freshmen who have shined during the difficult transition to DI wrestling and talks about the development of Chad Red Jr. as an assistant coach. Finally, the pair talk rule changes, particularly the three-point takedown. For the full interview, Click Here1 point

They are not accessible to everyone out side of school because not every has the resources to access them. So please stop saying that. As I mentioned before the author's website has the book as appropriate for kids 13 or 14+. That point is over. If a mistake happened, let it go. If the books are meant by the author or publisher to be for kids older than have access in a school library and professionals agree, fine. Seems as though you feel this issue is black and white(with us or against us, sound familiar?), it is not. The spectrum of 'appropriate' material ebbs and flows as a child matures, becomes exposed to new things, and becomes curious about new things. Some material that may be a bit 'much' for a child can be a good thing. Can spark creativity and curiosity and expanding of the mind. Does this mean you might have to have uncomfortable conversations with your child? Yes. Welcome to being a parent.1 point

I don't see this happening at the college level anytime soon. The nightmare of running tournaments in a timely manner could be challenging. The other aspect to consider is that there may have to be a weight class realignment. I would like to see this happen at a high school off-season tournament to see how it actually plays out before implementing it full-time. I am definitely in the minority, but I do not see weight-cutting as a huge issue at the collegiate level.1 point

I think it's been a very long time since the idea of balanced budgets could be associated with either Republicans or Democrats. Unfortunately both parties have decided that in order to win votes, you must over-promise and by the time we as citizens have to face the music, they as politicians have moved on to a different role and don't have to be accountable. Sad to say the Tea Party that rose to fringe power in the last couple decades actually had a point about fiscal responsibility, but while members of their broader party remained relevant, that particularly important message was lost.1 point

Brace yourself for the circus responses Stay in your lane. Parents have no say in the curriculum because they are not qualified educators. Parents should trust educators to provide age-appropriate content. You have given zero evidence for why you should get to impose personal beliefs on everyone. This goes against freedom of expression. We need to get these young children to think critically about what they read instead of shielding them from uncomfortable material. Nuh uh! Cite your sources.1 point

Protect football at any cost. That Division III swimmer paying a chunk of the full cost of tuition (since few actually pay all of it), is bringing the school money, not just one department. Multiply that sport x20 and that is significant revenue from tuition. I need to go back and re-read the story fully. I love college football, but I hate college football.1 point
