  4. Where did you see or hear this? Surely you're not speaking to message board comments as actual facts. Tom has never been on the hot seat at Iowa. This is the same athletic department that won't fire an offensive coordinator who finished 99th and 123rd in total offense over the last two years. Tom has won four titles and as recent as two years ago. He is as safe as safe can be in Iowa City. Now with the new AD coming in, this could all change.

  5. It would be great to have another conference, however I think it would be difficult for a team from the Big12 to step down into a lower level conference like this. You almost need a few more lower level teams to ban together to join, along with some new D1 programs of the future. It would be great to have a new conference with some new teams that get some automatic qualifiers.

  6. What do Iowa fans believe that Spencer Lee brings to the table to be a successful D1 coach at a place like Iowa, besides being a 3x champ and one of the most polarizing figures in the history of the program?

  10. Saw this on Flo's Northern Iowa preview, any direct source from wrestler/team? I don't think he has qualified based on USA wrestling's criteria (although they have been unclear in the past). The only criterion he would qualify through is #1, past national team member, but the addendum to that (Top 3 at Senior World Team Trials) makes it clear that means for the US national team. Micic qualified because he won Cadet bronze for the US and then switched nationalities, Amine qualified because he finished top 3 at NCAAs. Amar Dhesi won a Junior gold medal for Canada in 2014 and Ville Heino represented Finland in 2015- neither took an Olympic redshirt and I never heard either's name as eligible in 2016. Of course USA Wrestling could do their job and list wrestlers who have qualified once they do so, but they unfortunately do not.

  12. John Smith was excellence on the mat. Training focus was every bit as intense as Dan Gable. Did Smith ever go with Gable in the room? Like Gable did with so many of his Iowa wrestlers of varying weights?

  13. Yes, the University of Texas had wrestling. It was many many moons ago. UT even beat Oklahoma A & M in a dual, two years in a row! I want to say that was back in the 1920's.

  16. Love the Uncle John stories, keep’em coming. He was THE MAN when I came of wrestling age in junior high and high school. Not surprised to hear that he is crazy intense, he’s one of the greatest wrestlers ever. To be that historically dominant you will have traits that almost no one else has.

  17. I can't tell if you're being serious or not with this question. Since when was Spencer one of the most polarizing figures in the history of the Iowa program? Do you even know what polarizing means? You clearly don't have a grasp on the history of Iowa wrestling either. The 80s and 90s were filled with actual polarizing guys (e.g. Royce Alger). 99% of the people who "hate" Spencer Lee hate him because of the singlet he wore, not because of the person he is. If Spencer wrestled for Cornell, do you think he would have received the hate that he got from some of you over the last 5 years? You know the answer is no. Now to answer your question, Iowa fans see Spencer as a very popular, well-spoken, successful Hawkeye who would bring strong ties to the state of PA and continue close relationships with Jody and Young Guns. I don't think it's any secret now that recruiting is 75% of the battle in today's college wrestling. Most of the kids who will be coming through over the next 10-12 years will have grown up watching and idolizing guys like Spencer, who has been the face of the sport for the last four years. He also isn't done competing and seems to be one of those people who succeeds at anything he puts his mind to. Why should coaching be any different? Now here's a question for you. Before Gable took over the Iowa program and Cael took over ISU, what did they bring to the table besides being really popular and successful at wrestling?

  18. Would need one more program, but wonder if the United Athletic Conference (would be Bellarmine, California Baptist, Queens, Tarleton State, and Utah Valley, plus one more program) could expand to wrestling...just a thought. (also wouldn't be eligible for a bid until 2026-27, due to Queens being in transition until that time)

  23. I don't think you can only look at age with these things. Gable retired at 47 years old after only 22 seasons as head coach. I think Cael is already entering his 18th year as a head coach and Tom is on 21 years. With that said, I don't see either retiring anytime soon.

  28. I have no idea what a fall is, but further down page 1 is an expanded table that includes MD, TF, and PF. The average number of majors per tournament was ~98. The average number of tech falls per tournament was ~17. The average number of pinfalls per tournament was ~69. A pinfall was 4 times more likely than a tech fall. If we scored it like poker, the tech fall would be worth more than the pinfall. Even with the change in scoring rules I am guessing tech falls increase by 100% to 150% which would still make them more rare than a pinfall.

  29. from dangable.com 'Gable also served as head coach of the World Team in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1983, 1994 and 1999' so doesn't look like Dan was ever head coach when John was on the team. Of course doesn't rule out going in the room somewhere along the way.

  34. MARKETING Would you walk into court without a lawyer? Of course not. So why jump into the NIL cesspool without an agent. We are Top G, baby. You might know our first client, Marvin Atkins, better known as Austin DeSanto. We advised him to get a European sounding name, wrestle like somebody was choking him to death, and never let the rays of the Sun touch his body. That was his brand. We at The ILLINI Wrestling Blog and Forum are stepping it up a notch this year. Our newest client, Kannon Webster, legally changed his name to DEATH SKULL (all caps). He's got a full face tattoo and has signed a seven-figure deal with Nabisco, the darkest, most evil of the baked snack companies.

  35. I legit thought I got a warning for photos I posted guys. I was initially worried that those pictures I meant to send to my wife got leaked. Then I saw this thread. I am perplexed as to how conflicted I feel that that was not the case now. It's weird.

  37. No matter the time or day @LJB would be upset, let's just accept that. Not only were the new people in a period of transition and huge event madness, but would there have been complaints if the post was shoved in between Final X match promotion or results? I could only imagine the uproar of USAW posting that Kyle Dake won Final X then the Pride month tweet, then something about David Taylor.

  39. I would be curious to see the numbers of guys per program that have an NIL that covers the amount of a full-ride scholarship (and above). I doubt this information is accessible, but it would provide a number of "extra scholarships" per team as a result of NIL.

  40. If wishes and buts were candy and nuts then we’d all have a good Christmas. Enough making excuses for Gilman. He’s a professional multi-time world medalist. If he had a bad cut then he has no one to blame but himself. No. Excuses. Richards is the same age, made the same weight, and beat him two times in a row including the second match 6-7 hours after weigh-ins.

  41. The Division I five-year clock starts when you step on any college campus (after HS graduation), and one can compete in NCAA competition four of the next five calendar years (I.e. If you start school and quit, your clock keeps running). COVID added a year to the clock and competition years. You could not wrestle four years of NWCA then four years of NCAA without compromising the space-time continuum, and that would be bad for everyone, I imagine.

  46. I really don't think it will change how anyone wrestles. I watch FS and guys get put on the passivity clock and it doesn't change the way they wrestle. They just realize they are giving up a point. Active guys will be active and guys that counter will still counter. Guys that are passive will continue to be passive. If a guy can take someone down seven times to none I have no problem with it being a tech a fall instead of 14-6.

  47. Lee beat Yianni the last time they wrestled. I know people will probably have opinions on that but....... Prior to final X, in a space where opinions and broo ha ha doesn't matter but instead actual results do, Lee beat Yianni the last time they wrestled. Not sure how his win is on this list.
