UNC: Chapel Hill, NC State & Duke help keep NCAA D1 wrestling alive in the South. It's much appreciated. Their presence & prosperity help keep our sport from becoming a mere "regional" sport, like men's gymnastics has reportedly become. Clemson used to be part of the frontier but we lost the Tigers' D1 program circa 1995. https://ncwa.net/teams/clem Title IX was, indeed, cited as a reason. But laws have since changed, arguably favorably for wrestling too. Of potential interest: https://intermatforums.com/topic/54-which-colleges-will-add-mens-wrestling-now-that-title-ixs-restored-to-its-original-more-gender-fair-legislative-intent4 points

I hope Bernie decides to go HWT and finishes 4th next year to complete the Bizzaro Dake. 4th place, 4 years at 4 different weights. 4th @ 174 in 2021, 4th @ 184 in 2022, 4th and 197 in 2023...4th @ HWT in 2024!!4 points

With the great American Hero Wyatt Hendrickson someone is getting pinned most matches, it's just not Wyatt.4 points

No doubt. I'm just over the Lee-talk. More outlandish claims to follow.3 points

Whenever I was pinned, I accepted it as a failure. I knew I could get better. And sure enough, I developed a world class bridge. It was my best move. My go to move. It was feared.3 points

To save this board from Jimmy dropping more positional GOAT threads and cluttering up the board here's a thread to list each GOAT in every position in wrestling. Lemley is tough as nails. Could very easily see him being the Lucas Byrd of his class. Solid top 100 but not top 10 recruit right up there with the college elite2 points

I think we can all agree that Lee had a really weird career. He took losses to guys that shouldn't have held a candle to him, but also dominated everyone like very few in the sport has. Then let's add that he is on the most loved/hated team... He was good, very good, but had moments that we wonder what happened.2 points

When Dom got into national tournaments, I had to really go digging to find the documents that governed seeding and qualifiers. Even when I had them, the procedures have always been labyrinthine. Try explaining the rules to non-wrestling friends who want to follow along. I'd favor a single tournament over two days. Day 1: Challenge tournament, double elimination, wrestle back to third Day 2: Best 2 out of 3 finals, true second, if necessary. Anything that makes it hard to understand is a bad idea. For example, the new rules around the U23 team selection.2 points

not sure these two always wrestled like this, but this is one of the best pin or be pinned matches I've ever seen2 points

It's not fan-friendly. You've just described wrestling marketing strategy!2 points

Yes I've been around. Over these years it's gotten only more confusing. My critiquing isn't targeted to your post. Selection process is hard to follow. It's not fan-friendly.2 points

Little toe? So in other words you don't know that he was injured any more than any other wrestler who lost (or won) thus your statement is, of course, incorrect.2 points

Great point about PSU fans ranking Taylor over Ruth. It's impossible to accurately rank any "greatest of all time"2 points
-
If we’re going by placements, Lee’s ranking is pretty formulaic—although I’d add that it’s only fair to group him with people who had the opportunity to compete in four post-seasons, and exclude him from the group that was limited to three post-seasons. If we’re adding a subjective element to Lee’s ranking, it’s impossible to say. Wrestling has evolved over time, and people are only able to watch so many wrestlers. I think these ranking conversations often explicitly draw on statistics, while implicitly drawing on an athlete’s ability to inspire. If Lee wins world-level hardware, I think it would only bolster his ability to inspire.2 points

If we only allowed congress to act on things they understood, they'd get nothing done. Actually that's not such a bad idea. Almost as bad as old fogies who don't understand "technology" is the youngins who equate TikTok with technology. I'd kinda say TikTok would be the pimple on technology's azz.2 points

Every wrestler who lost their senior year NCAA tournament due to Covid was hit worse than Spencer Lee.2 points
-
So you have him behind every single PSU 3xer? L.. O... L Spencer has two Hodges, a Sullivain Award, and had one of the most dominant careers we have ever seen. Putting him behind half the guys on your list just shows what little you know about the sport of wrestling. Also, take COVID away and Spencer's career is over in 2021 with 4 titles. Nobody was hit worse by the shutdown than Spencer Lee.2 points

Steveson wasn’t a pinner. Never came close to losing after his true freshman season. I can’t recall how many TDs he gave up. Lee gave up TDs, backpoints, was pinned more than once. Great no doubt, but I think saying we’ll never see another as dominant is questionable.2 points

What you are seeing is actually the weight sheet for one of the Truax triplets. You see there's Bernie who is that chubby one, Berine [listed above] who never cuts weight, and "Pickle" Brine who quit wrestling after high school to pursue a career in cucumber farming.2 points

He was the most dominant wrestler I have ever personally seen. He bonus pointed almost everyone he faced, including pinning and tech falling guys who have won NCAAs. He had an injury plagued career and still won 3 Titles. If you want to rank the 3 timers by where they finished when they came up short, then just copy and paste the list. The bottom line is we may never see anything like him again at the college level. To me, he was one the best to ever do it regardless of credentials.2 points

I am curious to see if Rogotzke's style translates to the next level. He pinned a ton of guys in high school with his whip overs. He is a pretty solid mat wrestler as well.2 points

should they cheer because he did or did not get arrested????? i am still so unclear on this whole thing... should we cheer for an ongoing witch hunt that has proved fruitless yet again? should we cheer for the charade or the result?2 points

Correct. We have a good bit of fun at the expense of Larry Lee over on BWI. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

I'm not ragging on Lee. I won't pretend to understand how he felt. There is no question that he came back this season at far below 100% for the sole purpose of winning his 4th. But I do want to remind people about Nate Tomasello and the fact he was as determined a competitor as ever took the mat.2 points

You do a whole bunch of thinking. "Not that there's anything wrong with that."2 points

It's not the OW or who we think is the best wrestler. It's the Hodge Trophy. Parris was the most dominant, most pins, and did it in what may have been one of the two toughest weight classes. If Parris doesn't win then it's not really the Hodge rather just a makeshift OW.2 points

Tell me you haven’t watched Spencer Lee wrestle freestyle without telling me you haven’t watched Spencer Lee wrestle freestyle.2 points

The medical forfeit means Lee did not report to the match and does not get charged with a loss on his record. An injury default occurs during a match and counts as a loss for the defaulting wrestler (eg Austin DeSanto vs RBY).2 points

He owes you an explanation? Seriously?!?!!? Okay, I'll bite......why would he owe anyone--you, me, Brands, Gable, The Man in the Moon---anything? Premier athletes compete to satisfy themselves. I for one don't believe he--or any one else who toed the stripe last weekend--owes anyone anything. Just my view from the cheap seats......2 points

Circling back around and listening to this podcast; I'm pretty sure that rumor is BS. Sounds like Noto (in his own words) has a great fit @ LHU https://t.co/uWNRoZPl6v1 point

It's an inexcusable thing to say, but lets keep in mind not only do we not know if this is true, what context it was used in, he would have been 18-19 years old. People grow. Andrew Long was an egregious mistake, but I still think Cael and company WOULD be very...careful about this type of situation and would speak to the black athletes, get a feel for what their thoughts are(really the whole team, but specifically their 4 starters who are black) and IF he chose to give Noto a chance, it'd likely be because they believe he's learned and...just gotten better.1 point

This seems like pure conjecture and more just wishful thinking from Penn state fans desperate for a good 125 (not sure why they are desperate… they clearly are good enough without one). First, no way PSU is trying to poach him at the NCAA tournament and risk violations. Second, judging by some social media posts I’ve seen, Noto seems very happy at lock haven and has really praised the coaching staff. I sure hope he decides to stay at lock haven… a kid like that is huge for a small like them. At Penn state, he’s just another wrestler and not even one the best guys on the team.1 point

I'm a bit skeptical of Lee's Olympic aspirations. He was taken down quite a bit early in matches for a Wrestler of his caliber. The way he dominated in College was with that tilt, but with world Class Wrestlers being able to just lay there and not have to bring their arms in...so he can work the tilt, he's gonna have a lot more trouble turning people. I'm absolutely NOT saying I don't think he can adjust. I think just getting healthier and in better shape will do wonders for him...but I see problems that will make a transition from Folkstyle to Freestyle...despite his very impressive credentials already.1 point

Mason Parris sticks out to me as the Hodge winner. Very impressive resume and wrestled a full season this year.1 point
