  1. If you are a fan of mid/low level programs, consider giving to your school's wrestling giving day. Most schools in this category are the teams that lose wrestlers due to not having the funds and donors to match NLI from bigger schools. Some teams also rely on giving day to help supplement their budget for the next seasn. This week, Oregon State has their yearly DAM PROUD DAY on April 30th. There are several matching gifts for the number of donors as well as the amount raised. There is an anonymous matching donor that is for a significant amount of money. Only gifts on April 30th count toward matching. Please consider giving to Oregon State Wrestling and other programs that need more public support to stay relevant and keep their doors open. 4. So the thread was about arresting a judge. The reason was because the judge assisted in the escape of a known illegal immigrant that was under arrest for abuse while under trial for said abuse. That is against the law. She should be arrested. That is the thread topic. mspart

  6. Minnesota had a 1st, 3rd, 7th, 8th, and another (Millard) who MFF'd after starting 3-0. These were all true or redshirt freshmen, and McEnelly was the only one who was a starter for the Gophers.

  7. Let's work backwards: A team of 10 wrestlers to represent the US will be decided at Final X (the X is for 10). At Final X, the two best wrestlers at each weight will compete in a best 2 out of 3 matches format. There are three different ways to earn a spot at Final X at each weight: (1) Winning a 2024 World/Olympic medal (2) Winning the 2025 US Open (3) Winning the 2025 World Team Trials (WTT) WTT can be thought of as an "if needed" event. If there is a wrestler who qualifies through method (1), then method (3) does not apply for that weight. e.g. Spencer Lee won the silver medal at the 2024 Olympics at 57kg and so he automatically qualifies to compete at Final X for the 57kg spot on this year's team. Thus, there will be no Final X competitor from the WTT at 57kg. The same is true for 61kg because Vito Arujau won bronze at the 2024 World Championships. All weights will have a Final X competitor from the US Open. So, we have two Final X spots locked in from 2024 medalists (57kg and 61kg). This weekend we had ten more spots determined from the US Open. The final eight spots will be determined at WTT. By weight: 57kg: Spencer Lee vs, Luke Lilledahl 61kg: Vito Arujau vs. Jax Forrest 65kg: Joey McKenna vs. WTT winner 70kg: Yianni Diakomihalis vs. WTT winner 74kg: Mitchell Mesenbrink vs. WTT winner 79kg: Evan Wick vs. WTT winner 86kg: Zahid Valencia vs. WTT winner 92kg: Trent Hidlay vs. WTT winner 97kg: Kyle Snyder vs. WTT winner 125kg: Wyatt Hendrickson vs. WTT winner

  10. BB is very much epitomizes the prototypical Iowa recruit: tough, self-motivated, works his ass off. He'll get a lot of individualized attention from the coaches, but a lot of people have wondered if Iowa is falling behind on technique. It would be great if Brands could bring a technician on staff to really take BB's wrestling to the next level. Simply bullying opponents around will only get you so far these days. Imagine if they had someone like Nolf, JO, or Askren to fine tune their wrestlers' technique.

  11. Iowa fans should be stoked. Mocco, a junior in high school, got 3 takedowns to 0 against Penn State's starting heavyweight. If Kueter is healthy for the next three years, and then Mocco taking over, they are set for the foreseeable future at heavyweight. Whether Hawkeye fans want a push out in folk or not, there isn't one, so you favor the guy getting all the takedowns. Plus, I don't believe they really want that rule change. I mean do you really think Hawk fans want to start yelling "passivity!" 500 times per match?

  12. Prosecutors found unused laws to inflate payments nobody cared about, which could’ve been a minor misdemeanor, into 34 felonies. A flimsy case of political targeting... reeking of desperation. Don't take my word for, take a critic's reasonable view. https://reason.com/2024/05/03/the-new-york-case-against-trump-relies-on-a-twisty-legal-theory-that-reeks-of-desperation/

  17. Agree... Kish needs a little more time before decisions are made about his job. The goals for some teams are to stay in that top 10-15 realm with consistent AA's... which is not the same as other teams. One team's success is not the same as others. Being an OSUw fan, I was a little disappointed in how Cleveland Belton performed this year. I would have thought that he would have been pushing AA down a weight based on his previous performances, but he never hit his stride. Perhaps dropping a weight was not the best idea.

  18. It's amazing how Iowa fans like the pastry are twisting themselves into knots that Bassett "looked good" losing. He's going to look "great" in college then when he can't physically bully other wrestlers. Now the pastry is pointing out that Mirasola only had pushouts on Mocco as a slam on Mirasola instead of the fact that a non-physical heavyweight was able to physically manhandle their other prized recruit.

  19. Agree 100%. But I just wanted to point out to Mr. Pastry that Bassett looked good against everyone who has little to no college resume. The only person he wrestled who has a respectable college resume, kind of put it on him. Yes, I know Bassett is still only a junior in HS, but he's got work to do.

  20. Stanich's shot defense was/is next level, we saw that in both his semis and finals matches...what Bassett needs to work on as he gets ready for college (take this observation with a grain of salt. I was nowhere near the level of wrestler he is) is his mid match tactics and adjustments. He seemed to try to stick to the same gameplan in the finals and I think it cost him.

  25. Christiansburg didn't start to become a factor until 1999 (Dresser's third year when they were second behind my alma mater in Group AA). Cburg didn't win its first state championship until 2002. They did have quite the run from 2002 until 2018, so that's the era I'd equate with the Blue Demons vs. the 80s and 90s. There was a lot more than Great Bridge and Grundy making national waves back then too. Cox, and Western Branch were consistently nationally ranked and good ol' Poquoson (the aforementioned alma mater) had some good runs in the 80s and 90s. Numerous "Fargo" AA's and D1 wrestlers. Up north, there were some pretty good Robinson teams too, although my knowledge of NOVA wrestling prior to jumping into the sport in 1995 was pretty sketchy.

  26. The finals of the 2025 Senior US Open featured some incredible performances and some semi-surprising results most notably at 86 kg where Zahid Valencia used his picturesque duck under to knock off four-time world champion Kyle Dake. Valencia was one of four champions (Jax Forrest, Joey McKenna, Valencia, Wyatt Hendrickson) for Oklahoma State’s Cowboy RTC on Saturday night. They also put Dean Hamiti Jr. in the finals at 79 kg, giving them a finalist in half of the ten weights. This tournament, and 2025 overall, represents a changing of the guard in US Men’s freestyle as we’ve seen plenty of notable retirements and weight changes in the wake of the 2024 Olympic Games. This new era of men’s freestyle wrestling could include a world team member, not named Dake or Burroughs, for the first time since 2010. Mitchell Mesenbrink has the best chance to be that guy as he turned in an impressive win over David Carr - his 2024 NCAA finals opponent. Winners from the Open automatically punched a ticket to Final X in Newark, New Jersey on June 14th. With returning world medalists at the same weight confirmed to compete at Final X, we know the matchups at the 57 and 61 kg weight classes. Olympic silver medalist Spencer Lee will clash with 2025 true freshman All-American Luke Lilledahl at 57 kg. At the next weight class up, 2023 World Champion Vito Arujau will face high school phenom Jax Forrest, at 61 kg. The remaining eight champions have advanced to Final X and will await a challenge to emerge from the World Team Trials in mid-May. 2025 US Open Senior Men’s Freestyle Final Results 57 kg - Luke Lilledahl (NLWC/TMWC) over Liam Cronin (Nebraska RTC/TMWC) 10-0 61 kg - Jax Forrest (Cowboy RTC/TMWC) over Seth Gross (MATPAC WC) 19-8 65 kg - Joey McKenna (Cowboy RTC/TMWC) over Jesse Mendez (Ohio RTC/TMWC) 3-2 70 kg - Yianni Diakomihalis (Spartan Combat RTC/TMWC) over James Green (Nebraska RTC/TMWC) 8-2 74 kg - Mitchell Mesenbrink (NLWC/TMWC) over David Carr (Cyclone RTC/TMWC) 16-6 79 kg - Evan Wick (SoCal RTC/TMWC) over Dean Hamiti Jr. (Cowboy RTC/TMWC) 9-1 86 kg - Zahid Valencia (Cowboy RTC/TMWC) over Kyle Dake (NLWC/TMWC) 8-4 92 kg - Trent Hidlay (Wolfpack WC/TMWC) over Aeoden Sinclair (Tiger Style WC) 7-1 97 kg - Kyle Snyder (NLWC/TMWC) over Jay Aiello (Penn RTC/TMWC) 11-0 125 kg - Wyatt Hendrickson (Cowboy RTC/TMWC) over Demetrius Thomas (NYAC) 14-3

  27. well just combine the fact that its an age group event with the fact that some kids are held back and some aren't along with the fact that some people have good "fargo birthdays" and some have terrible ones...and all of a sudden you've got some match ups that don't seem like they make sense but actually do.

  29. 1. LL can't give up an early TD because Lee is so good on top 2. Keep getting to those angles on single legs, which LL did during the US Open 3. Consult Ono, who was able to slow down and stop Lee 4. LL has a better gas tank and the odds go up the longer the match goes on, especially into the second period, where Lee often fades because of the weight cut and his muscle mass 5. Work with Gilman on the above, who is also familiar with Lee

  31. Just an update on Virginia high school wrestling, I have been around it for 53 years, lol. First off, Christiansburg is way down. There is no longer a dominate program in Virginia! In the 80's and 90s, you had Great Bridge, Grundy, and Christiansburg. Grundy is not nearly as good as they once were. The interesting thing there is that all were lead by former Iowa AAs/national champs with Martin, Dresser, and Weber. In the 2000s and 2010s, it was Great Bridge, Christiansburg, Grundy, and Colonial Forge (they have disappeared). Virginia has seven state tournaments, including the privates. This has significantly diluted the meaning on being a Virginia State champion. Yes, the top Virginia kids can still compete at the national level, there is just not much depth at all. The class of 2025 may be the best class in close to fifteen years for Virginia.

  33. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but BS is not at all limited to this administration, nor this current state of media. Truth is none of us actually have a clue what happened here. Jumping on what feels good is jumping on what feels good, no matter which way you slice it.

  35. No one likes the rule, it's just something houses do to keep from getting sued or having their charter pulled. It's also why a lot of parties happen "off the books" now at satellite houses, or why some chapters go rogue and break from their nationals and IFC. All that being said, it would've been a much more interesting story if the security didn't exist and we saw an 11 year old lookin kid like Braeden Davis take on the entire Teke house. I'd throw him an NIL deal after that!

  37. You could always, ya know, just say this I was wrong.. you don't have to call me functionally illiterate.. that's pretty mean, man. When you say "I would be stunned if OU had a single guy make the r12 next year," but in the next breath admit that you can't name five of the guys who are likely to start for them, it really cuts into the credibility of your previous statement. The brighter spots in their line-up next year: 125: Beric Jordan (#21 big boarder in 2024) 133: Tyler Wells (R12, R16) 141: Alex Braun (#20 big boarder in 2024) 149: Jack Gioffre (R16) 157: Peyton Keller (AA - 5th in 2024) 184: Deanthony Parker (R12) I'll just leave that there. I think you may be stunned next March.

  38. I take what the athlete lists as their hometown on their school bio. I can also do “by high school state” … that could sway more to PA (Sem) and NJ (Blair) given they are boarding schools that have a lot of out-of-state students. HS state is trickier in the cases where wrestlers transfer across state lines - i’ve typically used the last place they wrestled (non-PG) as the high school. I don’t do per capita, because it assumes every person in highly populated states have the same access to the sport as they do in places like Iowa. If I were to compare this to a state’s population, it would be to NFHS participation numbers - the prospective college wrestlers, in my estimation, come from who is wrestling in high school, not a general population count.

  39. 6 AAs in D1 is more than a down year for PA. It's easily their all-time worst over the last several decades. It's rare for PA to dip below 10, and I can't a recall a time they had fewer than 9. To be sure, some of the counting is a bit suspect. (Lilledahl I get, but Bartlett? Usually, spending all 4 years of high school at a given state makes you "from" that state for counting purposes.) But mostly it is just bad luck. PA lost a bunch of guys in the blood round. They also had a bunch of hammers redshirting/injured (e.g. Arrington, Welsh, Crookham, Watters), not to mention Sasso getting shot. They only lose Starocci, so I expect they'll be back in double digits next year.
