... I was still a mess at 25, wasn't out of college yet and had some real issues making the right choices in what I was going to do in life. Anyone else ...5 points

10-0 with some big wins. Appears to be well on his way to supplanting Camacho at 125 for the Wolfpack (if he hasn't already). Before Peterson injury defaulted out of the match, Robinson was on his way to a technical fall. He had already majored Max Gallagher, Louis Gill, and nearly did the same to Diego Sotelo and Sheldon Seymour. Will he be in AA this year? Will he even maintain the starting spot?2 points

They are offering $2.99 monthly fee and can cancel at anytime for the matches they are streaming. With Shane Sparks anchoring their broadcast, I think they are a nice alternative to FLO. A much more competitive schedule than last year and production and commentary are much better in my opinion. Here is their schedule:2 points

From a coaching standpoint I would prefer to have my wrestlers to be under ranked. It gives most wrestlers a lot of motivation during the season. It generally makes your coaching job easier. The are both very good wrestlers but I will take Mendez in March. Mendez as most of you know never took a red shirt.2 points

Some people just don't get their *I poop my pants, don't laugh at me* together in life until they get a gutcheck or a reality check. Personally, I tend to tell my story that my adult life really began at 29. Took me seven years to get my undergrad, had some personal and family issues to deal with. Was lazy in the classroom, paid for that by paying my way my last three years while working nights and announcing tournaments on the weekend. Went full-time in my chosen career two months after I graduated - hated it. Quit two months later to pursue the wrestling thing full time. I'm sure it's just amplified more now than it was back then, but it seems like we got some awfully judgy wrestling fans when it comes to the lives of our stars. I get it's a discussion topic for the boards, but at the same point, the level of scrutiny we see over someone else's life and talent isn't a trend I really enjoy. The contempt comes, at least from my perspective, that fans are disappointed that Gable didn't do what they thought he should have done.2 points

Like a child. Who gets on stage in front of the people he is trying to woo back and tells them to go F themselves? A petulant child.2 points

She wants identity politics so very deeply. Why doesn't she just wear a mask and tin foil hat to signify for whom she voted? Or, she can join the normal people and just be an American. That seems to work for everyone who tries it.2 points

FYI: growing up we had mail and newspaper delivery Mon-Sat. Sunday picked up the paper after church post office in town. The comics were in color on Sunday. There were 4 of us in the back seat of that Ford Galaxy fighting to be first, there were not 4 sections only 2 (note: sometimes the fight resulted in 4 sections) However plenty of time for all to read on that 14 mile drive home. Now can you imagine that 14 mile drive if the guy writing the 'funnies' had decided to sleep in till Monday? Once is maybe forgivable but twice!2 points

The insults thrown at the Grinch in the song are priceless. My personal favorite: You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch, With a nauseous super "naus"!2 points

Close calls either way but keep one thing in mind. When you are counting for a danger takedown, you don't start counting the instant the other guy goes to his back. You give it 2-3 seconds to be sure he's being held there.2 points

Speaking of index funds ( @Wrestleknownothing, didn't know that about your background - interesting!), I don't think it's necessarily helpful for individuals in the wrestling world (or any other part of the world) to dwell too much on how they measure against some external benchmark. More useful to measure yourself on where you want to be. It's cool to hear about everyone's path at age 25, but not sure how pertinent it is to Gable (or anyone else for that matter) I'm not taking a shot at you WKN. I was just saying generally I don't like having a consensus view on what growing up looks like (as long we we are treating people with respect). Ambition comes in all shapes and sizes.1 point

You said you wouldn't be shocked if he lost to Kerk or Bastida. You basically guaranteed Stevenson would lose! I totally agree. Moreso with Kerk than Bastida, but if Kerk is going to Wrestle this season with the focus and intention to beat Stevenson...I absolutely think he's capable of doing it. I don't think anyone else is, but people are sleeping on how big, long, athletic Kerk is. To me, I'd be more confident if Kerk didn't look half checked out most of the time and he's won a NC doing that. I also wouldn't be "shocked" if Keck beats Starocci at the NCAAs, if Haines beats O'Toole(that one I actually do expect) or almost any other result. The only thing I'd BET on would be a healthy Mesenbrink wins it.1 point

It's funny you say that, but I have a belief that there has been a general societal age shift of about 10 years from what societal age expectations used to be in the 1970s to mid 2000s. In the modern sense, yeah, 24 year olds today are viewed more like teenagers were back then. So, Gable is still just a "kid".1 point

Horrible example. This was more a,transfer of heat from one part of the globe to another and caused by a specific event. You really knocked that strawman out of the park.1 point

Their ratings are tanked. https://www.thewrap.com/msnbc-cnn-fox-news-ratings-after-trum-election/ MSNBC’s rating domination was short-lived: After beating CNN on its election night coverage for the first time in network history, the news network owned by NBCUniversal is now bleeding viewers in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory. On election night, MSNBC scored 6 million viewers compared to CNN’s 5.1 million. But in the days after the election, the network’s total day ratings fell to 808,000 with a 90,000 in the coveted 25-to-54 year old demo, according to Nielsen. mspart1 point

Apparently you haven’t been following Jonny Bones social media the past couple of months? Gable has been busy. As much as he disappoints so many wrestling fans, I think he’s having a blast.1 point

3rd quarter was kinda light on stuff I really liked. 3 books about the Nixon years: Watergate: A New History, The Inevitability of Tragedy, and Nixon and Kissinger. Finished the Duane Moore series by Larry McMurtry. I think the first three are excellent, The Last Picture Show, Texasville and Duane's Depressed. The last two are much less essential. Probably my favorite read was Everybody Knows by Jordan Harper which I'd describe as Michael Clayton written by James Ellroy. So far the fall has has some better picks. I read Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe in advance of the show coming on Hulu. The book was really good, and I'm 3 episodes into the show and it is excellent. I read An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris finally. It is exactly how I wanted to learn more about The Dreyfus Affair, in dramatic form. I hope it's turned into a show/movie that has US distribution. The adaptation by Roman Polanski isn't distributed here post #Metoo.1 point

While I love the chart and info when you boil it down to NCAA's if you swap Mendez and Alirez you have 4 of the top 6 wrestlers are from the same field. Bonus has never been factored into rankings and while I agree strength of schedule is a good metric I am not a fan of dinging someone because he could not wrestle x guy especially when he went undefeated and won NCAA's which is a culmination of the entire country. I think if you had each guys resume without accounting for both wrestling at NCAA's Mendez could come out on top based off of those metrics.1 point
-
Yeah, I'm not advocating one way or the other. Just responding to your question with a pro-Mendez argument.1 point
-
Bonus isn’t really factored in rankings is it? Yes Mendez had a tougher schedule overall by virtue of being in the B10, but Alirez still racked up a lot of good wins (as did Mendez of course). I wouldn’t complain if Mendez was #1, but I think the reasoning to have Alirez #1 makes sense1 point

Your timeline does not hold up to scrutiny. The Media Matters report came out on Nov 17, 2023. Musk was tweeting support for antisemitic conspiracy theories prior to that. The one that got the most reaction was on November 13. But Musk had been feuding with the Anti-Defamation League for months at that point. And as a result companies like Disney and Apple had already been pulling ads from Twitter prior to the Media Matters report. Perhaps the Media Matters report increased the momentum, but the problem was one of Musk's own creation. He created the problem, and the atmosphere that allowed Media Matters to even get noticed. He would love nothing more than to take the blame off himself by trying to blame others. That he wants to do that by silencing an opposing voice also demonstrates his hypocrisy when it comes to being a free speech absolutist.1 point

My son's roommate is one of the trainers so he keeps in the know of what's going on in the wrestling room. It makes sense to me that Hughes is beating him. Afterall, Hughes is our only kid in the room that went undefeated in High School like Fix did.1 point

Since there are no better options... is the puppy thread but maybe it should be in both.1 point

Mendez wrestled a tougher schedule in 2024 than Alirez did in 2023. For example, while they had identical bonus percentages against D1 opponents who did not forfeit (66.67%) Alirez did it against wrestlers ranked 62 on average while Mendez did it against wrestlers ranked 47 on average. Mendez wrestled a tougher slate of opponents in the regular season, at the conference tournament, at at the NCAA tournament (though the average seed Alirez beat was higher than Mendez at NCAAs). Mendez scored more bonus points than Alirez at NCAA's. And Alirez's only bonus (the elusive pinfall) came against a wrestler with a losing record. Mendez did it more recently than Alirez.1 point

I agree that 165 would be the most likely upset. They wrestled twice last year and both matches went to OT with Caliendo winning both. I would expect Caliendo to win those one again but the margin is very thin. This match will be second semester in CHA so that should be factored in. We will know a lot more about the cut for Block, Hughes and Jamison as the season goes on. Last season the second semester was very rough on Jamison and he was just not the same guy. Will we see the younger wrestlers make leaps as the season progresses? Each team has some younger wrestlers that could continue to improve. For Iowa; Kale Peterson, Ryder Block, Gabe Arnold, Ben Kueter. For OKState; Troy Sprately, Cael Hughes, Tagen Jamison. Will any of the true freshman come into play? Angelo Ferrari and Cody Merrill come to mind. It will be a tight dual.1 point

You say things like Burnett just took 7th at super 32, the guys he is beating may be D2 and D3 All Americans, but go back and look at their high school results, they were not super 32 placers. So it is not that shocking that a high school super 32 placer can beat college guys that were not super 32 placers a couple years ago.1 point

Was he a beneficiary of a size advantage that came with a massive weight cut to 125? It seems he was able to handle the ill-effects of the cut, until nationals. Now at 133, he may not be able to use his size/length as effectively? I think he will be fine in the long run.1 point

Even in the NIL world, you have to be AA level talent and actually accomplish it to get the bold part. Not everyone is and its doubtful the ~10 kids he called out by name are all of that level. He isn't giving practical advise, he is taking a blanket stance that doesn't necessarily apply to all kids. Sure if you have the chance to earn half a mil, kids should take it, but lets not be naive enough to claim that any kid that steps on a mat has the opportunity to earn a half a mil before they graduate. About 1% of HS wrestlers compete in D1, less than that will start and even less will AA. We can teach kids to be smart entrepreneurs and good at statistics too. Every kid that gets held back and doesn't make that NIL $ is now a year later in the earning potential.1 point
