Baylor Ferndandes of Northern Colorado intentionally tries to hurt people with non-wrestlling moves on a semi-regular basis. He sucks at wrestling also if that helps him qualify3 points

The man is a symptom, not a cause, of the direction Flo decided to move in ~5 years ago, hewing to clickbaity gaslighty snark that is successful on social media. It works, and his style works on social media-focused consumers. That same move gutted Flo of the spirit and direction that made it a real torch-bearer for wrestling broadly. This has been laid out by all the guys who have left. Off the top of my head, in its heyday, flo had joe flo, fretwell, roper, mike mal, and our own esteemed host on this platform. All dudes who cared deeply about the sport, and achieved personally therein, coming to flo for a love of the sport. Everything they put out just beamed with enthusiasm. Early to mid 2010’s flo was incredible. Nowadays, what % of the guys on the current flowrestling squad actually wrestled? I don’t believe their current flagbearer did.3 points

I really don’t know. I tend to agree that these appearances at 174 are for dual wins.3 points

Desanto was a heel at Drexel and at Iowa. Impossible to leave him off this team. In fact he is the MOH of this team. Most outstanding heel!2 points

That really was madness. And the worst part of the NCAA's decision was EVERYONE but them knew it at that time.2 points

Does Wisconsin need to juggle their lineup to beat Drexel and Rider? If so, that's a rather sad statement for the Badgers.2 points

125 McCrone loses 14-9. Not enough horsepower or facial hair... 133 Bouzakis wins 5-2. Wrestled well. 141 Mendez loses 4-2. Gave up an escape and a TD in about the last ten seconds... 149 D'Emilio comes back to win 13-11. 157 Paddy wins 17-3. One more point would have mattered. 165Wilcox loses 10-2. 174 And...Kharch is hurt. UGH!!! Gonna keep wrestling. On his way to a maj. Holds on to win 11-7. 184 Hoffman loses 11-2. I've seen about enough of his, 'Vision Quest' to be honest... 197 I've been waiting for Geog. Looks like I'm still waiting. Loses 7-1. 285 I believe Misita would have given the Buckeyes a better chance... Swenski loses 12-2. And the Buckeyes lose the dual. 21-13 PITT wrestled well.2 points

Starocci can, and does, assume he will just win NCAAs. Has said this was his plan.2 points

It could go great for him. Speaking from personal experience as a far worse but similarly built athlete from a long time ago, a decision to move up ten pounds and one weight class had me running over guys I couldn’t handle the year before bc “weight management” took it out of me. It allowed my frame to fill out, sleep better, be better rested and be much stronger Hamiti might be getting really big in the off-season, or even in-between matches. It’s hard to bring the heat when your body explodes back up in weight from just seeing calories or hydration.2 points

Speaking of weak minded... you're really going with 'gonad sucking'? Couldn't come up with anything better? Pyles wasn't winning, hasn't won, and is mostly irrelevant. 80%+ here don't care who he is. Some guy at Flo... a company that does a half-ass job at representing the wrestling community. He's got a long way to go to get to winning.2 points

The classic Iowa style that guys like TnT, McIlravy, Ironside, etc wrestled is more akin to the style that DeSanto wrestled than anyone on Iowa's current roster. Penn State has a couple of wrestlers that are reminiscent of the classic Iowa style in SVN and Haines. Keckeisen also comes to mind.2 points

Right now they are one NC State and one Missouri injury away from challenging for second. They are still that plus three or four more Penn State injuries away from challenging for first.2 points

Watched Iowa at Penn. One Iowa wrestler showed well at 165. Transfer from NoDak State. Good attacks and finishing and then kept it up. Most others were score and stall, or close things by preventing scoring while on the edge of stalling. Woods looked tough but should have been called for stalling with his 'whap the head and keep away' stall tactics. Iowa won. Did not put out all its best so that factors in. But the "Iowa Style" is an embarassing example from a once dominant program. The idea that they can be good with NitLion and Cowboy transfers is hopeless. Yes, they are good.., but nowhere near Good Enough.1 point

Very true. And Iowa was likely getting a higher average tier of recruit. No Penn State to compete with. Coaching trees have grown, and wrestling has largely moved on and disproven the Iowa grind style in favor of “hey let’s actually respect our bodies and our minds and see what that does” approach. Twin mini-gables and Mr J Smith are so dyed-in-the-wool blood sweat and tears coaches they squeeze their athletes too hard, or just don’t know another way. There’s an interview with either John or one of the brands about a time when one of the brands walked up to John and asked when they can expect to finally stop getting fired up and not want to go fight the world while their wrestlers are competing. The answer from John was “it never stops.” Then…a more mature well-rounded adult devised a far more comprehensive coaching persona, style, and culture, and left those programs in the dust. Two of these rooms coach based in anger and discipline, one coaches based on gratitude, perspective, and creativity. The sport has moved on in a big way and its a great thing.1 point

So .... they would've wrestled if they could've, but they could've wrestled but they didn't? Out of curiosity, did the coach draw a breath in-between the two statements?1 point

I feel like the iowa style was born of an era when not everyone was in shape. nowadays it seems like you break people with scoring not fatigue.1 point

So what you meant to say was one Penn State injury plus 30% of Iowa being replaced, which is different than Iowa. OK, let's say we replace 30% of Iowa. Right now Iowa is looking at a 58 point deficit to Penn State if you assume Penn State scores zero at 149 (maybe, maybe not). What is realistic for Anthony Ferrari? Probably low AA at the highest. Call it 6th to 8th. Why? He was 23rd on the 2022 Big Board. Between 2013 and 2021 there were 45 guys between 21 and 25 on the Big Board, and in their 165 cumulative seasons they have 22 AA's. So call it a 13% to AA (and that is generous given that most of the 22 AAs happened after their first season). So, roughly 7 or 8 points max. The deficit is now 50. What is realistic for AJ? On the plus side, he has a title under his belt. On the minus side, he has not wrestled in years, he is not enrolled, and he is reported to be much heavier than 197. So call him 0 to 20 points. Who knows? Now the deficit is 30 with some very rosy assumptions. What is realistic for Kueter? Kueter comes in as a top 10 BB (#6), and these guys tend to have monster careers. Among these 90 athletes there are 9 who won it as freshmen. Of course, none of them skipped first semester in the room, but whatever. Let's say he has a 10% chance to win it all, he also has a 30% chance of never AAing (as has happened with 18 of the 60 who have finished their career). Is third a realistic ceiling? Not likely, but sure. That cuts the deficit to 17. With a Brooks or Starocci injury now we are even. All it took was to assume three wrestlers who are not currently part of the team (two not even enrolled in school), one of whom is actually practicing a different sport, to maximize their potential ALL AT THE SAME TIME (which is? an Iowa trait at NCAA's), and an injury to one of two specific wrestlers. Well, you have me convinced.1 point

Oh so one injury AND a number of hopeful hypotheticals? What else would they need? Keep going.1 point

Iowa is one Penn State injury away from making it a real race at NCAAs...1 point

Maybe I'm just naive, but lost in this so far is the value of a college education. You know, the old trading 4 (or so) years of wrestling for a 4 (or so) year degree. I have no idea of the size of NIL money, donor dollars, etc but for many (most) actual students the future value of a college education is not negligible. It would be interesting to see how much the landscape would change with an increase in the number of scholarships and with athletic scholarships at the Ivies.1 point

for cox thats a blowout. not that he's boring or anything but he anchored largely by being impossible to score on. for comparison, if bryce andonian beats you 4-0 its a different match than 4-0 cox.1 point

Ricardo Alcala, Matt Powless, Adam Chalfant, Taylor Walsh were all bigger guys who AA’d late in the Goldman era. They always had good 197-285 guys. The problem Indiana has always sucked for the most part in the 141-184 range.1 point
