  1. they really did tame desanto. his conduct basically got better the longer he was at Iowa. you could point at stuff he did at Iowa that was embarassing for sure, but he improved as a person.

  2. Time for NCAA football to become FBS football and become their own semi-pro league. Give them what they want. Contracts, unions, medical staff, owners, 55 man rosters....etc. Let them lease stadiums and facilities back from universities, do their own promotions, pay for commercials, etc. Let them have what they want...

  3. The Iowa Style was fatiguing and scoring on guys with a high offensive pace. Guys didn't just get fatigued because they were pushed to the edge of the mat while the crown yelled "Stalling". No one, including Iowa, really wrestles like that any more. Better defense and scrambling have made points more of a premium so guys are more reluctant to be overly aggressive. I don't think its a failure of a certain style but more the evolution of the sport.

  4. As Lee Corso would say "NOT SO FAST".....I had to do some digging but I found it! An AWN/Mike Chapman article on Randy Lewis titled "He wrestled for the pin". In the article it states that Lewis wrestled 26 different men who had placed in the top 3 in World or Olympic competition, and he beat 23 of them. He also counts 25 NCAA Champions among his victims. His career record at Iowa is 127-11-1. Off the top of my head ....one of his losses was to an undefeated Mike Land (NCAA finals his freshman year)...then Randy won NCAA's in 79 and 80, in 81 got hurt (severely) and still took 7th. I don't know if he ever lost to Daryll Burley (4 time finalist/2 time champion) 2 losses were to Jim Gibbons the year he got hurt and 1 was to Ricky Delagatta. He may have lost to Delagatta more than once in his career. Delagatta never won it though, finishing 4-3-3. The Lewis/Burley matches were some of my favorite matches to watch....Midland's, NCAA's, East West All-Star/

  7. There's a lot to criticize DeSanta for but this particular incident was overblown. Society has gotten soft. Back in my day you could tell your boys, "I'll ducking k!ll you m0therf#c<3r" and everyone would just laugh and continue to roast each other. Now, everyone is looking to victimize themselves

  8. McGonagle is in his fifth year at Lehigh, counting the non-counting Covid year. He has one more year of eligibility, if he wants it. So he could graduate and call it a career, or he could graduate and transfer as a grad student. Or, if some of the other pieces shuffle (149 remains a mystery, Malyke Hines has problems holding 141), he could return to 141 where he spent his first three seasons and Hines could bump up to 149. Or maybe, since he and Crookham have injury histories, it will take two of them to get through the season. I'm remembering how Lehigh had two good 285s a few years back, Doug Vollaro and Max Wessell, who were rarely healthy at the same time but managed to cover the weight for several years. It's a mystery.

  11. Is Rocky coming off an injury? Sounds like he was dominant most of the match, and I see Novak is ranked #21, but I would think he would have put up bonus with his resume. Completely understandable if he is just coming back from an injury, and we are a long way from March, but thought he would have pushed the pace to major. As I've said before on here, I think one thing that separates PSU from other programs (like Mizzou), is that their guys push for bonus constantly. For Mizzou to get a trophy, our veterans like Mauller, KOT, Mocco, Elam and Elam need to push when they're tired. KOT always does, but if we want to be in trophy contention, we need a team effort in the later part of the season...

  16. The classic Iowa style that guys like TnT, McIlravy, Ironside, etc wrestled is more akin to the style that DeSanto wrestled than anyone on Iowa's current roster. Penn State has a couple of wrestlers that are reminiscent of the classic Iowa style in SVN and Haines. Keckeisen also comes to mind.

  18. Even then, Penn State expects to win by more than double. In fact many are saying that if Penn State does not at least have double the points of the second place team, it will be considered a major disappointment, and Cael could be on the hot seat.

  19. Stanich is a true freshman and the staff hasn't decided whether he'll defer or not. If he defers he's limited to five dates. Hines had a minor leg injury; he may be back tonight vs OKS. Right now McGonagle is a 133-pounder and Crookham wrestled against Penn State.

  20. There are no charges against Joe, he is the sitting President. That will come from the impeachment committee if they ever get that far. I am talking about election interference in government and social media's attempts to stifle information that probably would have changed the election results as noted by the article I posted saying 1 in 6 Biden voters would have changed their vote if they had known about this. You can deny all you want. The laptop is Hunter's and implicates him in federal offenses and implicates his father that the impeachment committtee is looking into along with other information gathered as a result of the laptop. It is good that Hunter is being held accountable is it not? mspart

  21. So what you meant to say was one Penn State injury plus 30% of Iowa being replaced, which is different than Iowa. OK, let's say we replace 30% of Iowa. Right now Iowa is looking at a 58 point deficit to Penn State if you assume Penn State scores zero at 149 (maybe, maybe not). What is realistic for Anthony Ferrari? Probably low AA at the highest. Call it 6th to 8th. Why? He was 23rd on the 2022 Big Board. Between 2013 and 2021 there were 45 guys between 21 and 25 on the Big Board, and in their 165 cumulative seasons they have 22 AA's. So call it a 13% to AA (and that is generous given that most of the 22 AAs happened after their first season). So, roughly 7 or 8 points max. The deficit is now 50. What is realistic for AJ? On the plus side, he has a title under his belt. On the minus side, he has not wrestled in years, he is not enrolled, and he is reported to be much heavier than 197. So call him 0 to 20 points. Who knows? Now the deficit is 30 with some very rosy assumptions. What is realistic for Kueter? Kueter comes in as a top 10 BB (#6), and these guys tend to have monster careers. Among these 90 athletes there are 9 who won it as freshmen. Of course, none of them skipped first semester in the room, but whatever. Let's say he has a 10% chance to win it all, he also has a 30% chance of never AAing (as has happened with 18 of the 60 who have finished their career). Is third a realistic ceiling? Not likely, but sure. That cuts the deficit to 17. With a Brooks or Starocci injury now we are even. All it took was to assume three wrestlers who are not currently part of the team (two not even enrolled in school), one of whom is actually practicing a different sport, to maximize their potential ALL AT THE SAME TIME (which is? an Iowa trait at NCAA's), and an injury to one of two specific wrestlers. Well, you have me convinced.

  22. Plasmodium reminds me of Germany. When your neighbor would suddenly disappear and you would ask the Gestapo what happened . No worries they are fine maybe a vacation. A few days later another family suddenly disappears. Gestapo says everything is fine don't worry visiting family. Week after week families disappear and you are worried but YOU CAN'T PROVE WHAT HAPPENED.. Gestapo same answer, everything is fine . We all now know everything wasn't fine.

  23. He's a nose tackle. He's not cutting down to 285 unless he doesn't feel there is NFL potential so he is going to give wrestling a last hurrah. But this is awesome 1) for the Nebraska room 2) for his sizzle reel because "trains with one of the top wrestling teams in the country in the offseason" is buzzworthy. Coaches love to spout "wrestling teaches footwork and leverage and the media eats it up. 3) for the sport of wrestling by getting our name out there

  27. While it would be great for the Huskers. Nash is listed at 330 and transitioned his body to be "lean" 330 last offseason. His goal is the NFL and shirking his body to wrestle a semester doesn't really make sense. Fun story but most likely he is using wrestling workouts to get better at football and stay in shape similar to Tanner Farmer.

  28. Historically Greg Jones would be an example. One of the best ever but seemed like an afterthought even when he was competing. Modern day would be Austin O'Conner, if he's wrestled for iowa, which would have been a good fit he'd have been talked about constantly. And for fun, the anti example, a big market wrestler no ones thinks about and i have no idea why TJ Williams. 1 loss in three years at Iowa.

  31. Good morning, friends. Plenty of questions came in this week so I won’t even waste any time boring you with some anecdote or some other nonsense. We have more important things to discuss. Like this… Is the custody of Jagger match the biggest college wrestling stipulation in the annals of history? DR Rhino I kind of think it has to be. The balance of power in New Jersey is on the line here. He who possesses the Jagger possesses all the power in the Garden State. Not to mention the pork roll/Taylor Ham debate potentially being settled here. Much like the Dead Rabbits, the term that loses shall never be uttered again in these parts. I don’t even know which side of the debate the teams are on. Neither team is North Jersey proper and Princeton is not even in the realm, whereas Rutgers can at least claim to be the mythical Central Jersey. But newly minted Tigers coach Joe Dubuque is a card-carrying native of the north and Rutgers skipper Scott Goodale is a Jersey Shore guy. Both teams have a mix of north and south guys plus some out-of-staters who are probably confused about the entire ordeal. But who cares. We’re New Jersey and we don’t have to make sense. We never have and we never will, but you love us anyway. Give me your hottest Bedlam take. Rachel Gallardo Like a wild take on it or just a general take while looking absolutely dapper? Either way, I don’t really have one. New Sooners coach Roger Kish gets his first taste of this storied rivalry so maybe he has something up his sleeve. Daton Fix gets about his ninth taste of the rivalry but his status is up in the air at the moment. That certainly helps Oklahoma though Reece Witcraft is a very capable backup. I only wish ESPN did a Sunday Dual of the Week on one of their channels and aired this one. Seriously, why don’t they do that? Put it on ESPN2 or ESPNU but help us out here! If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you be doing? Raquel Gallardo My day job? I have no idea because I prefer to not work at all. Thirty years is enough already but I don’t see retirement in my future. The truth is, I’ve always wanted to entertain folks in some capacity, but never actually acted on it aside from goofing with my friends. And that’s why I enjoy doing this so much and am grateful for the opportunity that was given to me here. It may be small and maybe only like fifteen people read it, but you're my fifteen people. And you all let me fulfill a dream in some small way. When it’s all over and I’m dead or fired, I can at least say I did take a chance for once and someone out there enjoyed it. Seriously though, I have no idea how any of this happened. We know what Willie’s watching, what is Jagger looking forward to watching this weekend? Dan Seifring Well, the opera wars are heating up on HBO’s The Gilded Age right now. Mrs. Astor is about to offer a deal to Bertha before she loses everyone to the new Metropolitan Opera House. Plus, the Pittsburgh strike seems to not be going away. But that's for Sunday Night. I also need to finish The Last Champion one of these days. I hear Jason Bryant has quite a love scene in the third act. And I suppose I’ll watch some wrestling in between. I like that Columbia is doing a weekend swing in Iowa. The Lions are spunky and should enjoy seeing some farmland instead of the usual harsh NYC streets. Is a singlet a good Christmas gift for a wife of 30 years? Mike Abromitis Not if you want to have a wife of 31 years. You’ll be dining at Lu Nello alone for the foreseeable future. Do you like Greco-Roman wrestling? Eric Asselin Sure, I respect it. Jags, a kid just emailed me a fugazi excuse for missing class. The thing is, I had completely forgotten to turn in the attendance until I got the email. Should I turn in the cut? Salty Walkon Since I just completed nine seasons of Suits recently, I think I can answer like a lawyer would. Your evidence is inadmissible since it was not entered into discovery. Therefore, the kid is safe for now. I would give the little brat a stern talking to and let him or her know you’re on to them. Did Ben Askren ever get his cyber truck? Richard Anderson Mann Yeah, we’re not doing Ben Askren today, and thanks for the call. And with that, I think we’ll put a wrap on this week’s bag. Crap, did I even mention a wrestler for the lucky mailbag cover boy of the week? Last week, we saw Peyton Robb make the cover and win Outstanding Wrestler at the CKLV. Let’s go with Rider’s Quinn Kinner and see if the Broncs can knock off Wisconsin.

  34. Maybe I'm just naive, but lost in this so far is the value of a college education. You know, the old trading 4 (or so) years of wrestling for a 4 (or so) year degree. I have no idea of the size of NIL money, donor dollars, etc but for many (most) actual students the future value of a college education is not negligible. It would be interesting to see how much the landscape would change with an increase in the number of scholarships and with athletic scholarships at the Ivies.

  39. Fix maybe. Ivy schools don't allow grad students to compete. Jake Logan is in his fifth year out of high school and is working on a Master's at Lehigh, but Vito is seven years out of high school and is still working on his Bachelor's. I hope Lehigh uses this as a selling point in recruiting; lots of their wrestlers leave with two degrees after five years.
