  1. Angel Rivera gets to officiate big matches, and the Big10 announcers generally say he is a good ref. That said, I do not like it when he is officiating. It seems like there is always some controvery with his calls, and I think he injects himself too much into the matches. There seem to always be issues with restarts. This is my personal opinion, which may are may not be correct. I wonder what others think.

  2. I hate the fact that he coaches while reffing. Let the kids wrestle as they want and penalize and award points when warranted!

  4. He is screwed in Iowa. They cant develop talent. Seems kids go there for fanfare and NIL, not to win championships. Bassett is smart. He has to see like everyone else the trends. You go to Iowa because of what they can give you, not what your championship dream is.

  5. Gabe Arnold is overrated. He pushes and pulls but has no shot.

  6. In real time i thought it was 3 and 2 for Andrews, but when they showed the replay, I saw what Angel saw and could understand the change. There were some weird ass stall calls throughout though. And some weird decisions not to call stalling. Just no consistency.

  11. What, you think THAT is a story about moaning on the mat? I'm going on a rant. This was way back when I was 11. I was wrestling in the finals of an open tournament against one my teammates. My teammate had beaten me 4-2 in a ranking match a couple weeks before and I was now a scrub at 97 pounds. At the tournament I was seeded 4th and my teammate (Pat) was seeded 2nd, and the #1 seed was a dude who was unbeaten and who pinned my teammate the week before. I hammered my first couple opponents and was in the semifinals against the unbeaten kid. I pinned him in the 2nd period after getting a good lead, which shocked everybody. I was a pretty good wrestler but I had a few losses on my record. Anyway, I wrestled Pat in the finals. About halfway through the first period I got in deep on a double leg, picked him up completely and not so gently deposited him on the mat. Not a slam, but not a gentle deposit. I took him down straight to his back and flattened his shoulder blades to the mat. He started bawling, not just crying but loudly bawling, and the referee immediately stopped the match. Everybody and their mother came out onto the mat to make sure Pat was okay. They gently brushed the tears from his cheeks, and the referee restarted the match. I didn't get a takedown. I didn't even get a 3 point nearfall. I got screwed out of at least 5 points. After they'd refreshed Pat and let him get his composure the ref RESTARTED the match from that point in the first period 0-0 in the neutral position. It was as if the 10 seconds where I took Pat to his back no longer existed. Pat "won" the rest of the match, 4-3. I think that was the first time I got screwed by refs, but it certainly wasn't the last.

  16. Seems easy to me, put the best wrestler on the mat, and I think Kennedy is the best the Hawkeyes have at that weight. Wouldn't Nelson get hammered from a lack of matches in seeding at NCAAs, also? Whoever wins the ranking match should be the guy on the mat.

  19. Really? Again with pointing out Joe Williams wasn't in that bracket? AGAIN...the POINT was that it used to be a tournament that Sr level Wrestlers would participate in and Williams one anecdotal example. It has to do with the level of competition of the Midlands back in the 80s/90s vs today. That's it. "Often," also doesn't literally mean EVERY SINGLE time...it means, "in many instances." The fact that there was a 7th place finisher and 2 NCAA Finalists is...in and of itself fairly compelling. But nowhere did I say, "the Midlands were tougher the year and at the weight Cary Kolat took 3rd as a Soph in HS than the NCAA Tournaments."

  31. Is it just me, or did Mesenbrink have another mental lapse last night? He looked confused toward the end of the match, like he thought he'd win by TF with RT tacked on. He had enough time to cut Mantanona one last time and secure another TD, but didn't. I mean, it ultimately didn't matter but MM might need to work on his match awareness. Same thing happened at Nationals last year when he thought he had RT on Carr.

  34. I think Haines went up because they were both ohysically 157lbers last year and he was actually bigger, so he decided two weights was nothing. Haines frame is much better suited to wrestle 174 than MM.

  42. They were crappy in the 1960's and are still that now. Had one of our wrestlers with his short pulled to his ankles while trying an escape - he was iffy before and never came back after it happened in a gym full of kids & parents watching. The singlet may not be great but it works.
