  7. Solid list. No arguments here. I might add the Bubba vs. Taylor NCAA final near the Ramos vs. Lee match because of the sheer shock of it. Taylor just steamrolled through everyone that season and no one saw it coming. Also what's your scoring weights and methodology for your star ratings? Just curous.

  17. So, I stole my star rating scale from Jim Cornette and Weasel Dooley. When they would review pro wrestling matches, they said they only did four stars because that’s what the TV Guide used to do for the movies. A zero-star would be known as a “dud,” a one-star was crappy, two stars was average, three was pretty good, and four stars meant they tore the house down. The five-star match rating was introduced when Terry Funk and Jerry Lawler had a blow away match in the 1970s and they deemed it superior to anything they’d ever seen. Over time, Dave Meltzer picked up the concept and added half and quarter-star ratings to the scale. So, I retained the half and quarter-star thing, but added in certain factors to make separation clear, those being story, ranking, competitiveness, talent level, and stage. On my scale, anything 4 and above is outstanding, but 4.5-5 range means it’s more memorable to me and has something specific that took it to that level. A 5-star match also just means without a doubt it’s the best match I’ve seen. What held a match like Yianni and Joey McKenna back from being five stars was because of the questionable call that put a sour taste on the match or the extremely long injury time for Ramos and Lee. It’s really nitpicking at a certain point, but it works for my brain. I hope I explained that decently.

  18. Between Ironman, Hall of Fame Duals, a couple Husker duals, and Blair-Sem-Delbarton, I’ve spent about 10 days at home in the last 40. For the first time in quite a while, I can sit back, relax, and get totally immersed in college wrestling this week. And it’s a robust slate. Let’s get into it… 5. It’s Conference Time From here on out, the majority of the college schedule is in-conference competition. With those matches being critical for seeding at qualifiers coupled with the low match counts for dozens of prominent contenders, I’m hoping it results in a drastic reduction of ‘ducking’ and/or high-profile matchups not materializing. 4. How Good is 2024 Michael DeAugustino? Two years ago, then at Northwestern, DeAugustino posted a terrific season that culminated in a 4th place finish at NCAA’s. But he’s been oft-injured and quite an enigma since. He was just 9-9 last year with highs (a win over Matt Ramos) and lows (a loss to Blake West). To start the year, he defaulted out of CKLV and stands at just 6-1 on the year. Well here’s a big spot for him. This weekend he gets #14 Braeden Davis (PSU) and #13 Dean Peterson (RU). If he gets through both, he’s once again a player in March and in a weight that’s totally up for grabs. 3. And More 125 In this topsy-turvy world of 125, Drake Ayala is the new #1 in the country. On Friday, he’ll face #2-Matt Ramos as the Hawks dual Purdue. 2. My (Other) Favorite Head-to-Heads #1 Ryan Crookham (LEH) vs. #10 Michael Colaiocco (PENN) No Previous Meetings #6 Dylan Ragusin (MICH) vs. #8 Dylan Shawver (RU) Ragusin won 4-1 a couple weeks ago at Midlands. #3 Peyton Robb (NEB) vs. #10 Michael Blockhus (MINN) Blockhus is fresh off a 5-4 win over #2-Jared Franek, who beat Robb last week. #9 Mitch Mesenbrink (PSU) vs. #10 Caleb Fish (MSU) Fish is coming off a win over #7 Cam Amine, who Mesenbrink wrestles Friday. #2 Dustin Plott (OKST) vs. #4 Trey Munoz (ORST) No Previous Meetings #3 Lenny Pinto (NEB) vs. #10 Isaiah Salazar (MINN) Salazar won 7-6 in last year’s dual. #5 Cohlton Schultz (ASU) vs. #12 Dayton Pitzer (Pitt) Pitzer won 4-0 over Schultz at Midlands last season. 1. Almost All of PSU-Michigan Penn State is #1, Michigan #5. And on an individual level, there are so many good matchups and questions to be answered. Let’s start with PSU’s freshmen, which are all undefeated. Braeden Davis takes on veteran #5 Michael DeAugustino. Ty Kasak takes on super senior #6 Austin Gomez. Mitch Mesenbrink will face perennial All-American Cam Amine. 133 is a #4 vs. #6 matchup between Nagao and Ragusin.174 pits two NCAA Champions: Carter Starocci and Shane Griffith. And 285 has #1 Kerkvliet vs. #4 Davidson. That’s it for me this week. It’s going to be a fun one. And I get to watch every second of it from my own couch. Also - don’t forget to tune in to one of the best atmospheres in wrestling as Buchanan hosts Clovis tonight live on MatScouts.

  19. You definitely did that. If these are the actual matches, PSU has a non-zero chance of shutting them out. Do I think a shutout will happen? No, I do not. Would I be completely shocked? No, I would not. It would be one of the most impressive things I've seen in college wrestling if PSU would shut out a team with as many good wrestlers as Michigan.

  26. That's the best take of the post. So many greats here. So many insanely great wrestling years. Why try to reduce it to a simpleton "Batman vs Superman" type argument? That's just dumb. ALL of these guys are incredibly impressive. The best part is reading through the list of the greats.

  27. 1. Lots of injuries this year - Figs and Vaquez being two important ones this year. 2. Team looks very flat - Parco, Teemer and Schultz all have losses they shouldn't have. They look a little disinterested. 3. Have some good kids coming in like #1 Manville - but the classes have been down a little since having a couple great ones. 4. Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley was the #1 song the same weekend that ASU won the title in 1988....35 years ago... which is the same amount of time from 1953 - 1988.

  36. This is good Supreme court already ruled this is free speech. Not sure what you expect anyone to do about this. That's the definition of a military alliance, and we are bound to do this by treaty obligation regardless of who the president is. Trump did this many times. Good You don't think killing Bin Laden was good? What's wrong with India? This is in the constitution-nothing a president can do about this. This is already happening de facto and benefits republicans There's nothing wrong with this a priori-some mergers are anti-competitive, but corporations often need to do this to increase efficiency.

  40. I'll go with Lehigh's Colin Kilrain in 1981 and 1982. Kilrain was seeded 1st in the 1981 tournament, based on an undefeated season including a win over Ed Banach, the eventual champion. Colin lost 5-3 in the semis to Clarion's Charlie Heller and wrestled back for 3rd place. In 1982 Kilrain was again undefeated and seeded 1st, this time at 190; the other top seeds were Mike Mann, Bill Scherr, and Pete Bush. Colin had beaten Mann and Bush during the season. This was the tournament when Harold Nichols threw a fit over the 190-lb seeding and the seeding committee re-seeded the weight; Mann and Bush were originally seeded 2nd and 3rd and would have met in the semis. Instead Kilrain met Bush in the semis and walked into a 44-second fall. Bush beat Mann 3-3, 2-2, criteria for the title; Kilrain wrestled back and beat Scherr for 3rd. Bush said it was the only time he beat Mann in a lifetime of trying. Kilrain made a career of the Navy, became a Seal, recently retired as a Vice Admiral. His wife is a retired astronaut. One of their children, Sean, is on the Lehigh roster now.

  41. Hunte drew Lehigh's Bob Sloand in the first round in '77. Sloand had talent but was unseeded due to a roller coaster year. He won 9-9, 3-2 against Hunte, won his second match, and then med forfeited the next day due to a knee injury. Defeated wrestlers only wrestled back if they lost to semi-finalists back then, so Hunte was out. Iowa finished 3rd, 11.5 points behind Iowa State; it probably cost Iowa the team title.
