nebraska really has a great culture right now. i dig it when a program has an era/period in which the team is really bonding and fighting for each other.3 points

I have to say I have never seen anyone do that in any match I've been in or have watched. I would call that slamming and not part of wrestling. I was crossfaced once in veterans competition that was pretty brutal, I almost went out. I was stunned and really couldn't wrestle for a little while, and as a result lost pretty bad. mspart2 points

Good grief man! Have you met them? Have you not followed what has happened at almost every new location they move to and why they move on?2 points

Every time a rules debate goes big on social media, I'm unfortunately reminded how ignorant the average wrestling fan is. We saw it with the cutback debate after Dapper Dan. 90% of fans don't understand the rules beyond the rudimentary basics, but speak on them as authoritative experts. Because they're defenseless in that scenario. You can't be serious. Shilson has a responsibility to protect herself and she didn't. That's not Mortimer's fault. When I snap someone or throw an underhook by, I don't do it half-speed on the off chance my opponent doesn't react and flies face first into the mat. The reality is that this was a freak accident resulting from clean technique. Shilson's concussion history is a major player here. It sucks, but it's on her. She didn't protect herself in a standard wrestling position.2 points

his brother Matt Ciasulli was about as good a hs wrestler that i've ever seen. He majored or teched Darrell Vazquez (maybe two years in a row) and Vazquez went on to be Cali's first 4xer. i used to go back to the room and watching him and mikey rogers practice was as entertaining as any wrestling ive ever watched in my life.2 points

Then have a beer with him, but don't let him ref. Young refs usually get better, but if you're on your 5th year of reffing or later and you're still screwing the pooch on a regular basis, stop disrespecting the athletes and become a pairing official or something.1 point

I think that the fact that she got knocked out (and that Mortimer seemed to know it and didn't stop) prompted the review.1 point

I think it was because he got burned so many times. Wisconsin wrestlers did NOT do well at Wisconsin for a very long time. The guys that were ranked highly Nationally...struggled. I just don't think he thought there was a whole lot of in-state talent...and there wasn't. There's more now, but I'm trying to think, who other than Henning since Jetton has been in the finals? When was the last Wisconsin NC? Guys like Swick, Lewis, the Crass brothers...Beau Breske(who came after going to Neb). Lowney and Konrad were always going to Minnesota(Konrad especially after Lowney did). Tim Hartung was a guy who had to beg Minnesota just to walk on. He sent them letters and clippings all year and they were recruiting a kid from Iowa...until they saw him go out to Sr Nats and Hartung put one on the other kid they were recruiting. Barry gave a lot of those guys full scholarships. Others he offered, but there were academic issues...not dumb kids or terrible grades, but guys they just couldn't get in through admissions. Sucks, but what it is.1 point

I feel I need to clarify. I was never that good, but did wrestle at Veterans Nationals 3 years in Vegas. I had a good time, met some great folks, and lost a lot. The match described above, probably would have ended in a loss as well without the crossface. Looking back I think I should have gotten really mad and took it to him, but I was really stunned to where I couldn't move much. It wasn't even real competition, just a side match because he didn't have any competition at his age and weight. I've been crossfaced many times, but that was the hardest one I have ever had put on me. I would not say it was illegal or illegitimate. But I certainly was not ready for it. mspart1 point

Wrestling is not making any revenue period. They are a drain on revenue unless you have huge donors or lots of donors giving to the program. Tv deals for schools are for football and basketball. If a school wants a team it’s not because they make the school money with maybe a few exceptions. You make my point for me about the scholarships, I probably just do a poor job of explaining. Let each school do how many scholarships they want. Whether it’s the school picking up the tab, financial assistance, or NIL money. Will some schools get more talent than others, sure, but that is the case now. I think with wrestling governing themselves instead of NCAA maybe they can escape the title IX requirements. I don’t know how that would work but if it did work out then maybe more schools would add programs. 40-50 years ago their were way more wrestling programs than today and it’s not because the schools were making money from them. By having geographical conferences this might create a buzz in the wrestling community and spread out the talent more. Just trying to think outside the box.1 point

Not to worry. I hear when they move to Iowa City all 5 will be joining St. Mary's Boys Choir.1 point

I agree conferences are antiquated for wrestling. I think four regionals and the top 8 from each regional qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. A True 8th place match would also happen if needed. This is what the regionals would look like (the ranking numbers are what they placed at NCAA's this year). Also, I am using all teams that are going to be NCAA DIV I in 2026 (as that would give us 80/81 teams.Making basically equal Regionals....So Morgan State, Queens, Bellermine, and Lindenwood are all included) OK I know someone is going to say How is Minnesota in the West when it is Wayyyyyy North. Well it came down to Minnesota was the furthest west of any of them that I considered. It came down to Iowa, Northern Iowa and Minnesota. Iowa was West of UNI and Minni was West of Iowa. You could also move Minnesota to the North and Iowa to the West or If you really wanted to do it. you could move Minnesota to the North and SIU-E to the West since it right next to the line of demarcation (Mississippi River) and is way more south, So it might be less travel for them. The tournaments should be held in Major cities (East = Philly or NYC, North = Chicago or Detriot), South = Charlotte or Nashville, West = KC or Denver) The NCAA loves their play in games so the 9th placers wrestle the Wednesday to be the 33rd qualifier. That person would take on an 8th placer of the highest Region Seed that is not their own. You would only seed the Regional Champions So let's take 165 this year the Regional Champs would have been (for sake of argument) East = Julian Rodriguez, Cornell South = Carson Kharchula, Ohio State North = Dena Hamiti, Wisconsin West = David Carr, Iowa State The Seeds would have been: #1 Carr, #2 Hamiti, #3 Ramirez, #4 Kharcula So West would be Vs. South all first Round and East Vs. North (so that 33rd would be say Austin Yant from the North Region and he would match up against the 8th placer from the South for the pleasure of wrestling David Carr) If the 9th placer is from the West he would take on the 8th placer the south as he is the meeting up with the highest seeded wrestler that would not meet his regional) Each Quarter Bracket would be 1 Vs. 8, 4 Vs. 5, 3 Vs. 6 and 8 vs, 2 So entire bracket would look like this (Using the 165 seeding. 1W Vs. 8S, 5E vs 4N, 3S vs. 6W, 7N vs. 2E 1S vs. 8W, 5N vs, 4E, 3W vs. 6S, 7E vs, 2N 1E vs, 8N, 5W vs. 4S, 3N vs, 6E, 7S vs. 2W 1N vs, 8E, 5S vs. 4W, 3E vs 6N, 7W vs. 2S So this is what the qualifier list would have looked like for this years 165 (the Placers are purely theoretical). So the 4 man wrestle-in would be Harkins, Mazzara, Yant and Cook, The list is pretty similar to what the actual national qualifiers were.1 point

It was very well known that most Wisconsin wrestlers were offered less then Out of state wrestlers By BD, It was kind of the expectation it should be a privilege and honor and not so much compensated for wrestling in state, not sure that theory panned out so well for BD1 point

I honestly didn't think that was so bad. At this level one needs to learn proper defensive front head position. I know Emily has been plagued with concussion issues and that probably is more of a reason for the KO than the move itself.1 point

this was the worst DQ i've ever seen. every coach i've ever had taught to "bounce" the opponent's head of the mat to clear elbows. in practice, this is not literal. it's a coaching queue that just means to snap and retract the elbows to clear when your opponent has to react to the snap. it is not mortimer's fault that shilson did not react and got her face bounced of the mat. there was nothing dirty there whatsoever. i saw another "headbutt" DQ that was just as bad at the same tournament. nothing more than sexism/treating women wrestler's like they're children made of glass. zero percent chance a men's match is officiated this way. https://twitter.com/MrPatMineo/status/1647356658887057412?s=201 point

No - not at all. My point is that blaming the "white left" wasn't helping our country's inability to find agreement - the very same agreement that we should all be pursuing instead of blaming other sides. Now instead of blaming "the other side" - now you've just changed it to "not our fault." Which still helps very little in pursuing agreement or common ground (which, in real life, we actually have quite a lot of.) What you're still doing is drawing a line between "us" and "them" and defending that line instead of realizing that this line is the very problem. The difference between sides isn't nearly as big as we're being "sold" on by politicians: Sensible left and sensible right are not that far apart. Wacko far left and sensible left are much further apart. Wacko far right and sensible right are also much further apart. The line between sensible parties isn't that big - we mostly agree most of the time. The lines between each party's wackos and opposing sensible groups are much more noteworthy. That's where we are being played by politicians and their BS. They are comparing wacko left to sensible right - and they make sense every time. Same thing when comparing wacko right to sensible left - always makes sense. Comparing wackos to sensible people isn't tough to argue - even for dummies like politicians. That's the trap we are getting caught up in.1 point

The census data below could match the above "18.9%" = "about 20%" Although not directly displayed on the census page: The share of individuals that clicked Hispanic or Latino and selected two or more races may very well have increased from 6% to 33%. The share of individuals that clicked Hispanic or Latino and selected "other" as race (like didn't select any race listed) may very well have increased from 37% to 42%. I think the point of @mspart's article excerpt is more Hispanic or Latinos are interested and taking action consistent with their self-identification, which is not of the "white" race. I think @mspart's sharing the article was pointing out that despite the term "Hispanic" implying "white," the people completing the census may not consider themselves as white.1 point

The problem may be that WWE decided he isn't their type. In WWE, actual wrestling talent means nothing compared to being a character like Logan Paul or roided-up like Lesnar. Gable is an incredible wrestler, but maybe not what WWE is looking for. And with UFC and WWE merging, he probably isn't what UFC wants either. Over the past five to ten years, UFC's business model has shifted from being an actual sport to more of a WWE-like show. The UFC WWE crossover athlete that will sell PPVs is Logan Paul. I'm sure Jake Paul will be one as well. A.J. Ferrari would also have been an absolute star in both UFC/WWE if not for the fact that he seems to want to go to prison. And of course, people who put on exciting fights like Bo Nickal will have success in UFC, just not at the level of a Logan Paul.1 point

He is potentially the right skill set, size and age to bounce between UFC and WWE.1 point

This situation is solely the responsible of the Russian government. To blame anyone else is nonsense. Any "punishment" for any athlete is 100% caused by Russia. Show me a Russian individual athlete who publicly, openly, and whole heartedly condemns the ongoing one-sided Russian attack on Ukraine. Then, perhaps, an exception could be provided. Until then - they should be NOT allowed to compete. If the Russian athletes must fight their own country in order to compete - that is how it must be. It is their choice to be Russian citizens, they must live with that choice and the responsibility associated with it. It is the responsibility of nobody else.1 point
