Depen ds on if he signs a letter of intent. If no, any team can step in. If yes, he'll need a release. Since its through the portal if he signed the letter of intent, he would also need to have the NCAA approve the release otherwise lose a year of eligibility under the recently adopted rule from the NCAA.2 points

1997 Iowa NCAA tournament performance is up there with ‘83. 8 AAs, the 2 that did not place made blood round. 5 champs, a 2nd, 2 placed 6th (I think that’s right on those last 2). They were NOT nearly as dominant at B1G though. Jesse Whitmer who would win NCAA only took 4th and Joe Williams who also would win NCAA took 2nd. They also lost dual vs Ok St (Lincoln McIlravt was not in line-up that day). But the NCAA tournament performance was one of the best ever.2 points

Both things can be true - there are many many many people that have enjoyed Spencer Lee’s wrestling, consider him to be a good person, are fans, have cheered him, and recognize the pressure has felt. And — there are plenty of people that have written nasty and mean spirited posts, with the intent to make Spencer look bad, annoy his fan base, or to make themselves feel better. Intent isn’t very clear when it is read by the person being slammed.2 points

I din't realize what a bunch of silver spooners were on this board. I had to share a poo brown chevy chevette that would intermittenly loose compresion with my brothers and sisters. There was never more than $2 of gas in that car.1 point

Shit, I didn't know that. I just so he had Hodkins Lymphoma. Got that in '82, went through treatment in '83(or at least much of it) and he STILL Wrestled at and Won the Olympics? That's impressive. I mean...even had he lost, the drain cancer takes out of you indescribable.1 point

I’ll take your word for it. I guess I worded that poorly. I think Teemer is a top 2 or 3 guy at 157 with a clear path to a title. I think he’s in the second tier at 165 behind Carr and O’Toole with a lot of other guys. He could finish 3rd or he could be a R12 guy. Griffith and Hamiti wrestled for 5th at this weight class this year. Kennedy, Ramirez, Kharchla, Peyton Hall, Facundo, Hall, etc all got beat out. It’s a deep weight class. I know that Teemer is a stud and I have watched him plenty.1 point
-
Teemer went up to 157 from 149 during gis redshirt season because he didn't see himself being able to chase a 65 KG Olympic Gold. 74 KG was his goal. Now you're going to make me chase down a 3-4 year ols interview. Also, if you think for one second he isn't on the same tier as Quincy Monday, then you haven't watched him wrestle.1 point
-
Yes, all I was saying is that the weight class had not been completely cleared out in 84. A doped Johansson is proof of that. I never said Blatnick would have won a fully attended games. Not to mention Blatnick had beat cancer not too long before that!1 point

He could also be keeping his cards close to his chest with the US Open around the corner. Spencer said he and the HWC coaches haven't decided yet if he will go but I was very surprised (but at the same time not) that he hasn't had any mat time at all since Nationals. The Open is less than 4 weeks out.1 point

No, I can comment once on whether I think any matches are exciting in a given year in a tournament. Since that offends you so much, great I'm happy about it.1 point

If you aren't competing to win, then you aren't really competing. At some point the outcome does matter - otherwise, it's the very definition of insanity.1 point
-
If you're burying participants with "regularity" - then I'd have to categorize it as just plain dumb. Plenty of sports to compete in where death isn't a regular result. The rest is macho BS. That's just my humble opinion.1 point
-
Sounds like adrenalin chasing to me. In our youth we do crazy things that risk life and limb for no really good reason. I know plenty of guys who perished in a similar pursuit - and their mothers or fathers found it less than worthwhile.1 point
-
Not sure where this came from exactly, doesn't seem like it fits with the previous conversation. But yes - that's absolutely true. Embracing competition is exactly what we wrestle for. But that does NOT make losing any fun - losing always sucks. A couple L's followed by W and it's still a W - and that W makes the wrestling life keep going. Those that compete and wrestle with nothing but L's - they almost always bail. (The rare ones that stay, I'm not sure how they are wired - certainly differently. There aren't that many of them.)1 point

This It’s great for PSU, Iowa, & other high profile programs. Not so sure if it’s good for the other 60 or so that are losing their best wrestlers.1 point

I took his reaction as that not being an excuse and that he just plain lost...1 point

ESPN literally said on air that he wasn't in the building, and people were running rampant with that narrative to demolish him, including on these boards. I think your painting of him as a beloved figure outside of Iowa wrestling is not based in reality.1 point

Any time a mid to lower tier school has an AA, some upper tier school will make an offer to them. The rich will keep getting richer. Wouldn't be surprised to see this start killing weaker programs.1 point
