It's ugly, but honestly, Nicolls just saying the quiet part out loud. This is the new reality, where wrestlers aren't just beholden to their coaches, but also to their NIL sponsors. In some ways, even more so. The coach can make you run sprints or do pushups if you screw up, but your NIL sponsor can work the levers in the NIL agreement to minimize your comp if you don't perform to your sponsor's expectations. What's more, many boosters who pay big NIL bucks aren't doing it because it's economically sensible (as it usually isn't). They're doing it so they can have a sense of power and control over their favorite sports team, and/or because they want to be able to brag to their buddies about it and be seen by them as influential. So the quiet part is getting said out loud more and more.3 points

I don't think any legitimate sources have confirmed or denied that OKST is paying for Jax's travel to and from Stillwater. Likewise, there haven't been any confirmed sources that have said the Bassett's were expecting their travel to be paid for, and/or who's expenses they wanted covered. The only things that seem to be facts at this point is that Jax has been spending a good amount of time training at Oklahoma State, and when Bill reached out to Brands wanting Bo (and likely Melvin and Keegan) to have similar training opportunities at Iowa, he was told they couldn't due to a compliance issue. If the numbers that Bo was supposedly going to make through NIL at Iowa are remotely true, a few planes tickets seems like a pretty trivial reason to decommit from a school you have been heavily endorsing since February. Especially when you're a family that flies all over the country year round to attend every major tournament.3 points

This pretty much ends the debate. You don’t make the Olympic finals if you aren’t good at scrambling.3 points

Im already worn out by Bo and he hasn’t even started college yet. So with that said I think he goes to Penn St. I Bo-liege Okie St is content with who they have at their middle weights and Bo can step in right after SVN or Kasak.3 points

Two points 1) Scrambling - If you want to argue that Spencer wasn't innovative or didn't funk in this department then maybe you can make an argument. But, he was a fantastic scrambler. Great hip awareness and was phenomenal at keeping his head up. 2) Takedowns - Spencer, when not gassed, is a phenomenal takedown artist. He didn't need a go to takedown. He had an array of attacks to take his opponent down. He was also phenomenal at re-attacks. Spencer was as complete as a wrestler as one can think of3 points

The paid flights thing is weird and the loosely rumored $5M or whatever is hilarious. After BB committed to Iowa, he literally said that he had higher offers from other programs on the table but his decision wasn't about the money. I wonder though if his decommitment will sting him a little bit financially. His NIL will have to go through the clearinghouse now, and will be limited by the annual salary cap. Donors can still earmark contributions to wrestling, but it'll still come at the expense of other sports (e.g., football), which ADs may not love. If I'm being honest though, the decision is probably good for Bassett's wrestling. In many ways, he's the prototypical Iowa wrestler. Strong, aggressive, pushes himself extremely hard, bullies opponents, never lets up. Those aren't bad things by any means, but why commit to a place that will develop what you're already great at? He needs a coach that will level up his technique and training style. It's not hard to imagine BB at Iowa smoking 95% of his opponents, then getting outfunked/caught at Nationals. Or overtraining and getting hurt late in the season. We've seen it happen many times before.3 points

Really hoping to experience a new countdown. Maybe he can start with 30 schools and eliminate 2 a week. Shrink it down just a bit. Was so much fun.3 points

Someone is reporting that Tom Brands called up Mrs. Bassett and yelled at her. I won't say who is spreading this rumor but it is definitely Pat Mineo. Take it with a grain of salt because he probably read it on a message board himself.3 points

If you're hungry for the inside scoop and unique insights around the Bassett situation...you can go ahead and skip today's FloWrestling Radio Live (FRL). I sat (suffered) through it, so you don't have to...45 minutes of pure conjecture. I'll never take this forum for granted again.3 points

One would think. Seems like an easier solution would have been to hook Bill up with a job at Coe College (I kid, sorta). To @Coastal’s comments, isn’t there a thing about living within 250 miles of the RTC or something?3 points

It's because Willie knows more than what he's saying and he is trying to find the words that will let him walk the finest of lines. He does this often in these scenarios and it is purely because he wants to give us, the fans, the most information possible without crossing any lines.3 points

In response to this and other common comments. First off, updates are appreciated, please make sure they are vetted and aren't from the guy on the X with 4 followers. It is common to be curious how this happened. Ben was seemingly a healthy 40 year old high level athlete. This is scary for any of those in that range that may or may not live as healthy of a life as he does. Tragedies such as this could raise awareness about conditions that could affect many of us. Speculation is common and hopefully we will find out more with the hopes of helping someone that could be in a similar situation. Helpful dialogue translating medical talk is good and helps to educate that dispel half-truths and rumors about Ben's condition.3 points

What I read is that Russia made the comments of how this could escalate to where this could destabilize the region to the point that nukes are an option....insert more grandstanding political speak...yada yada yada...then ended with the hope is that this will be settled diplomatically and urged all sides to come to the table.2 points

During President Barack Obama's administration (2009–2017), the United States conducted drone strikes in several countries as part of its counterterrorism efforts. The primary countries targeted by these drone operations included: Pakistan: The U.S. significantly increased drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal regions, particularly targeting areas like North and South Waziristan. These strikes aimed at dismantling al-Qaeda and Taliban networks operating along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. thebureauinvestigates.com+2newyorker.com+2washingtonpost.com+2 Yemen: Drone strikes in Yemen focused on combating al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The U.S. targeted suspected militants in various regions, including the 2013 Radda airstrike, which mistakenly hit a wedding convoy, resulting in civilian casualties. newarab.com+2en.wikipedia.org+2businessinsider.com+2 Somalia: Operations in Somalia targeted the militant group al-Shabaab. Notably, a 2016 strike killed approximately 150 suspected militants at a training camp. Afghanistan: While drone strikes were part of broader military operations, they were extensively used to target Taliban and al-Qaeda operatives across various provinces. Iraq: Drone operations in Iraq were primarily aimed at combating the rise of ISIS, especially after the group's significant territorial gains in 2014. Syria: The U.S. initiated drone strikes in Syria targeting ISIS strongholds and leadership, particularly after the group established a significant presence in the region. Libya: In 2011, the U.S., alongside NATO allies, conducted airstrikes, including drone operations, during the intervention against Muammar Gaddafi's regime.2 points

The older I get, the more I realize that money is the source and solution to every problem in life. O/U for further college commitments by Bo Bassett: 1.5 O/U for transfers once Bo Bassett enrolls in college: 1.5 I'm so happy my alma mater, for the most part, is not in this line of business.2 points

Kudos for the security guy taking the murderer out. Saved a lot of lives. This is what we should be discussing, not how Christian the murderer was. He obviously was not much of a Christian if he was willing to murder indiscriminate people in a church. mspart2 points

The Brands' philosophy of not practicing until you can get a move right but practicing so much you can't get it wrong is great for beating inferior opponents but is so easy for equal opponents to exploit. RBY hides an arm and Desanto looks like he's never wrestled before. Lee never developed a go to takedown or scrambling because he'd just tilt everyone into oblivion. Marinelli developed his upper body series but got beaten like a dog whenever someone refused to engage at NCAAs. Ayala's entire offense seems to consist of a throwby. The old tough guy approach of we don't need to adapt, others need to adapt to us just lead to wrestlers getting beaten when if counts after beating the same opponent earlier in the year. You are correct that Bassett doesn't need to reinforce what he does well. He needs to focus on some more leg attacks as his pace is a weapon but as Stanich showed, he's not super athletic and has trouble getting through head/hands2 points

I have to admit and I said this in other threads, I didn't think Trump would do this. I thought he would continue talking. I admit I was wrong about it. I'm not sure how I think about it. Supportive and not supportive. 1. If Iran wanted a civilian use (electricity) nuclear program, no one thinks they shouldn't. I don't think so. But if that is their aim, why are they creating nuclear fuel that surpasses that which is necessary and come to nuclear armaments? Why do they have centrifuges that are way more capable than what it is they need for a civilian program? 2. If Iran is cagey about this, why the caginess. I know people on here say they were on their stated target and not doing anything wrong. 60% enriched uranium is something not needed for civilian use. So it seems there are two stories that are contradicting each other. 3. They are the biggest sponsor of terrorism in the world. They fund Hamas and Hezbollah. They fund the Houthis. They fund international terrorism. So they are not the good guys. 4. I understand that Israel wants to take away the Iranian threat to their survival. 5. I am not sure about our involvement. I did not think it would go this way and I'm not sure I am fully supportive. But the targets were not population centers, they were nuclear sites with minimal people. So they were strategic sites, not population centers. 6. Some say Trump is a terrible negotiator. Iran, like me, didn't think Trump would do this. But they now know, as do we, that Trump wants to negotiate with Iran. But he won't be toyed with. 60 days were given as a time to negotiate, on day 61, Israel struck. So Iran rolled the dice that history would repeat itself and it didn't. 7. Trump continued to want to negotiate and Iran continued not to negotiate in good faith. Trump has intimated that they can take out Iranian leadership and have done some of that. He obviously wants to come to an agreement with Iran. 8. As you can see, I find way more reasons for this action than reasons not to. But I am still on the fence about it. I am not totally surprised it happened, but am surprised that it did. That is where I am with this. Now that it has happened, I hope it turns out to be a good thing in the end. mspart2 points

Why are you so eager to be able to trash an 18-year-old kid? For... using social media to increase his profile which...invariably leads to more money? Also good for the sport, but if you really need to, it's a free country. You can trash the kid whenever you feel like it. Might be wise to hear why he decided to leave before you do, but again, that's on you.2 points
