  1. Setting aside fan interest, tournaments are important for wrestlers to get used to the grind of making weight multiple days in a row and wrestling 3-4+ matches a day. This is one of the most grueling aspects of nationals and if you haven’t done it during the season you are at a potential disadvantage.

  2. This. It gave me the vibe that after Kasak went down, they gave Sealy the opportunity to make 157. As he hasn't competed or had any weigh-ins recently, he looked like a guy that dropped 20 pounds pretty quickly and had no energy. He's good, make no mistake about it, but I'm guessing he was sucked out and dehydrated.

  3. Wild that one of Pyles excuses for Sealey getting whooped by Cannon was that “he just watched his high school teammate get pinned”

  4. I gotta go with Gable. Messenbrink can score with gas pedal and motion, but guys can grab him and slow him down a bit. Gable is out there with the biggest, strongest guys on each team, and he treats them like they are made out of paper mache. The only reason someone in college stays on the mat all seven minutes with Gable is because Gable doesn’t feel like working too hard that match. I know Keuter’s not likely AA level, but he’s in R12 discussion. Gable treated him like he was a 5th grader. He legitimately might have been able to beat him using just one arm. And that’s nothing against Keuter, that’s just Gable being an alien level wrestler. Legitimately generational. I’d go so far as to say that the last time a whole field was this outclassed by one guy was Cael’s senior year.

  5. Yes, Trump is accountable for the actions of everything under his time. That is irrelevant to the the claim of this spending being wasteful. Wasteful spending has been bipartisan. The dunking is on EVERYONE who is against transparency and waste reduction. Those complaining the loudest happen to be libs. Back to the question, could there be conflict of interest?

  6. Overall impressions of both squads Ohio State was on Senior Night and except for Mendez their squad looked as if they had this date circled. Penn State looked good in some spots, but a few guys looked tired for lack of a better word. Maybe that pinfall at 125 changed some of the mindset with both squads. 125 - In period 1 I thought Lilledahl was gonna tech McCrone, but he failed to finish that 3rd takedown and then McCrone cradled him. Oh boy. 133 - Davis looked a half step slow, plus he really needs to clean up his mat wrestling. I thought at one point he was on his way to getting decked by Bazooka but then the camera guys looked the wrong way, then the challenge brick, then he comes back and wins ugly. 141 - Bartlett wins by one TD. Musta been boring, right? Maybe not. I kept expecting Mendez to eventually get to a leg but it never happened. In fact, Bartlett had not just one good shot in the match but 2 good shots. Converted only once, but enough to win. 149 - Van Ness also looked a half step slow. He'd have fired off 6 or 8 shots normally, so what's up with that? Got the tight win over D'Emilio but not his typical pace. 157 - Cannon overwhelmed Sealy. Cannon looked good and I think he might beat Sasso tomorrow. Sealy looked like he had no energy and no confidence. He even started to take a shot and it was there and he wouldn't fully commit. No confidence there. 165 - Mesenbrink. Superman. Next Topic. 174 - Kharchla had a lead and a second good shot as well, but Haines got out of that shot and converted his own for the win. Both guys walk away with something. 184 - Stallrocci wins a boring 20-5 match. Home run hitter Ryder Rogotze had nothing for him, allowing Stallrocci's boring style to wear him down. 197 - Did Barr score almost every one of his points in the third period again? Don't show up with 5 minutes in your tank against Josh Barr or you'll be getting taken down repeatedly in the last. Hwt. - Feldman looked his normal tough self. Probably the best Hwt with returning eligibility. Mirasola lost by 7 but I thought he at least looked like he belonged on the mat with a guy like Feldman. He'll be OK by 1 year from now.

  7. Don't remember him getting pinned during his three years at Wyoming Sem. I love seeing freshman get put on their back. Can go a long way in their career in cleaning up their slop. Luke is fine. If they wrestle again he'll bonus McCrone and not choose down next time.

  10. This Beau Bartlett special is ironic. "he said he wishes he can let it fly" proceeds to never let it fly for the remainder of his career.

  11. Look here to see the handiwork of our very own @Wrestleknownothing in greater detail. His post and the recent discussion of allocations led me to wonder what you all prefer. 1. The accuracy of seeding all 33 wrestlers and having more consistent results 2. The excitement of seeding only the top 16 and seeing where the other wrestlers fall into the bracket causing more variability in early round matchups and potential for bracket-busters.

  12. Pretty sure there isn’t much effort being made because there doesn’t seem like much can be done, and that the decision wasn’t really related to wrestling

  13. If Bo wrestles to win and not to lose, he can win it all. He has been wrestling not to lose and that doesn't work.

  14. Been thinking for awhile a higher value should be put on winning matches, especially against high quality opponents, during the last half of the season compared to the starting half. Doesn’t fix everything but seems like it could bring the rating of wrestlers down who are dodging competition later in the season.

  15. They have a 2 year exemption, so they are good next. year too... oh and they are committed to building the conference back up. It makes more sense for Wyoming, Cal Baptist, N. Colorado, UVU and Air Force to move to the Pac 12 and Little Rock to the Socon. One last thing...

  17. What I saw in Sealey was a guy with Room Ragdoll Syndrome. Big-shot freshman comes in, and he gets torn apart every day in practice by the more experienced guys who are using him as their takedown dummy. Can you imagine what rolling with Mesenbrink every day must do to your confidence? Probably also Kasak, Haines, Van Ness, maybe Dake. He shoots a single, he gets scored on. Shoots a hi-C, gets scored on. Shoots a double, gets scored on. Ties up, gets scored on. Keeps space, gets scored on. All this stuff that used to work in high school, just doesn't work anymore, and the self-doubt creeps in. His stuff would work on 99% of the wrestling population, but he's wrestling the other 1%. You could see it in his wrestling. I wasn't that he didn't want to be there, it's that he didn't believe in himself. He'd start to shoot a shot, then sort of quit halfway, almost expecting it won't work. Tentative, low confidence, expecting to lose, looking sort of resigned to his fate. Some guys eventually figure it out, find the stuff that works against the other 1%, persevere through the tough times, until they get to a place where they can hold their own. That's Barr, Kasak, Haines, all with massive level-jumps from high school. Other guys... never figure it out. It's too early to say for Sealey. As of now, though, I don't think he's figured it out yet. I'd bet a lot of money that he's getting ragdolled every day in practice. Hope he sticks it out and finds his way to the other side.

  18. The one thing I expected when I poked my head back in here was someone commenting on LIU's Anthony Ferrari stalling out in his first official season. 2-1 with close wins against an F&M starter with a losing record and a Clarion backup before losing to Kyle Mosher, a fringe NQ.

  21. In-season tournaments allow injured starters to build up their resumes for RPI, among other things. Also, anyone arguing in favor of "less wrestling" is probably doing it out of parochial interest or in reaction to a recent event. There is no way to fully prevent tactical ducking.* Getting rid of in-season tournaments is bad for the sport. * Cards on the table, I advocated that Cornell want to leave Shapiro at home for today's dual against Arizona State because going to the in-season tournament at Lock Haven tomorrow is the only way I can see him getting 15 matches before NCAA seeding.* Finishing the season with 14 matches and no RPI is an annoying way to have to battle through 3-2-1 starting in the quarters. Same situation as Vito last year. He would have had 14 matches, but he lost in the semis to. The loss probably had the same effect as no RPI, putting him at 6. Of course, that ended up not being a problem. * unless he loses in the ILT semi, in which case he's not in the running for a top-3 seed anyway.

  26. Steveson is close to being a 100% lock. I think Hendrickson has the technique to hang with Gable and keep it to a decision, but he also has the potential to pin people. I don't care how good somebody is if a good pinner somehow gets them on their backs they can lose, and that includes Steveson. It's like a puncher's chance in boxing, except we'll call it a pinner's chance. I'd give Hendrickson a 5-10% chance based on that, and only that. I think it's Steveson/Kerk in the NCAA finals, and Hendrickson finishes 3rd again. The battle between #2/#3 seeds at NCAAs at HWT should be a really good one between Kerk/Hendrickson though.

  36. Intermat's new rankings for the week just dropped. There are no real surprises at the top as we had #1 wrestle #2 this past week. The results of that dual meant there would be some separation this week. And there is. In addition to PSU solidifying its hold on the top spot, Iowa and Oklahoma State are looking pretty locked in for second and third. With their upcoming dual at the end of the month we will get a lot more information on that front soon enough. But the more interesting race (as it has been for years) is the race for the fourth and final podium spot. Nebraska, Minnesota, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, and Northern Iowa all have realistic shots. Meanwhile, earlier candidates Cornell and Illinois have faded from the picture. On the AA front, just because a wrestler is ranked in the top 8 does not mean they will finish in the top 8. When it comes to seeds (first cousin of ranks) a 9 seed and an 8 seed have very similar chances of AAing. Of course PSU leads the pack with 8.3 expected AAs. They also improved their chances of 10 AAs to 11.75%, a season (and probably all-time) high.

  38. Kid, With all due respect, you've got some seriously bad takes here, all throughout this thread. You're entitled to your opinions, but the factual understandings on which they're based need some work. Let's take a stab at it, shall we? 1. Boys wrestling isn't dying on the high school level. Participation in high school wrestling is increasing -- including among boys. This article from last year (here) shows an increase of 32,443 boys compared to the prior year, for a total of 291,874. Fold in the gains from the prior year, and there was a 25% gain compared to 2021-22, which is remarkable. This is without mentioning the consistent gains of the girls, to 64,257, although my personal guess is they're mutually reinforcing. The 291K figure is still an overall decrease from the 70s and 80s, including the all-time boys high of 356,131 in 1976 (see article here), but if the current growth rate continues, we'll be back there in a couple years. (We're already there if you add the boys and girls numbers from 2023, but we're talking boys now.) There's pockets where wrestling is struggling for demographic reasons (e.g. in rural areas, where schools have declining enrollment), but it's growing overall. 2. Nor is it dying on the D1 level. It's a concern I share, no doubt, and it's taken a beating over the past half-century, going from 155 D1 men's programs in 1975 to only 79 at the start of this year. But look at the number closer, and you'll see that we've flatlined since around 2011, with a slight net gain in programs since then. A Flo article (here) demonstrates this well, both in listing of actual programs added and dropped over the years, and in an accompanying graph. Yes, losing CSU blows, but every sport loses programs here and there, and not every lost program means "wrestling is dying." 3. Earlier you refer to people "blaming" Title IX, as though it was a scapegoat. While there's a grain of truth to that, there's no question Title IX had a dramatic impact -- or at least the DOE/OCR's three-prong proportionality-driven interpretation did. It isn't rocket science: when you demand equality from colleges whose teams skew male, and don't take disparities in interest into account, you have to either add women or cut men -- and adding costs money. True, those who put all the blame on Title IX ignore the decline in high school participation at the time (see above), and the cuts weren't helped by ADs who overspend on football. But numerous programs were dropped expressly or in part for Title IX reasons, often to stave off pending or threatened lawsuits. On the plus side, it's helped open the door to women's wrestling. Overall this issue has been heavily politicized, and as such most literature on the topic is slanted, so if you have an overly strident view in one direction or the other, you should probably rethink it. Some good reading here, here, here, here, here and here. 4. Can we relax with the "warrior mindset" stuff, and how "soft" we are? Yeah, we're not living in caves anymore using our bare hands to kill our meal each night like "alpha males," but as you can see above, wrestling is doing fine and actually is in the midst of a rebound. Maybe skip the next one or two or twenty Andrew Tate podcasts? Come on man.
