  1. We haven't posted about Sumo recently because there has been abysmal Sumo coverage on YouTube. The Japanese broadcasting company with the rights to show the tournaments clamped down on anybody publishing videos of their product. Thankfully, NHK has started putting out English language broadcasts of the 15-day tournaments. This was the perfect time to sell your product in America. There is going to be a changing of the guard. The great Yokozuna Terunofuji retired after a bad start in this tournament. He was a favorite of ours. So, his retirement was a sad event. But he had bad knees. It was time. But there was also a new hope: Hoshoryu. He ended up winning this basho with a 12-3 record followed by a win in a three-man playoff. The council that decides Yokozuna promotion will consider whether he will be elevated to that highest rank. He has another recent tournament win in his favor, and he has been amazingly consistent in obtaining winning records in bashos over a long period of time. His uncle was a Yokozuna. He has a style reminiscent of the greatest Yokozuna of all, Hakuhō. His recent Sumo has been dominant and exciting, and Sumo needs a Yokozuna. But the council that decides the promotion must also look at his negatives. First of all, he is Mongolian, and the Japanese have hungered for a Japanese Yokozuna for quite some time. This is not part of the promotion equation, but you have to feel that it will be an undercurrent. Secondly, his recent performances have been very, very good but not the domination you want to see from your Yokozuna. He won this basho at 12-3. He was runner-up in the tournament before that with a 13-2 record. This is all very good, but in the tournament before that, he was 8-7 and lost to many basic rikishi. Before that, he was 9-4-2 and before that 10-5. Is that Yoko material? To put it into some perspective, the now-retired Yokozuna Terunofuji won or finished runner-up in six of the seven bashos right before he was promoted to the highest rank. Finally, Hoshoryu also has a total of two basho wins and two runner-ups in 27 upper-division tournaments. Is that Yoko material? Probably not, but he's one of my top two favorite Sumo wrestlers, so I'll be rooting for his promotion. My gut tells me that they will wait for one more tournament to see how he does. On another subject, the three-rikishi playoff showcased not only the potential new Yokozuna Hoshoryu, but also Oho and Kinbozan. Oho is Japanese, and he's always had the talent, but he's never fully achieved the results that his talent demands. In this tournament, he did. Interestingly, in his very first professional tournament back in 2018, Oho had to face another debutant named Hoshoryu. And Oho beat him! The other player in the three-person playoff was Kinbozan, a native of Kazakhstan. He came pretty much out of nowhere to reach the top on the leaderboard on the final day. He has the height and the weight (6'5" and nearly 400 pounds), but except for his first tournament in the upper division where he finished 11-4, he had a losing record in six out of nine bashos. In fact, he was demoted to a lower division a couple tournaments ago and had to win his way back to the spotlight. The big question for him is this: Will he become the most famous Kazakhstan wrestler in the future, or will that always be Borat? GLOSSARY: SUMO -- Japanese wrestling in a raised ring. YOKOZUNA -- Highest rank in Sumo. RIKISHI -- Sumo wrestler. NHK -- The Japanese broadcasting company with the rights to upper-division Sumo. BASHO -- Sumo tournament.

  3. The following eye-opening snippet from an article today on Flo about Starocci is very telling: *** When Barr arrived last year as a true freshman, Starocci was one of the first new teammates he sought out in the room. The senior was eager to get his hands on Barr and the rest of the freshman class. It became a yearly right of passage for Starocci to see how long he could pound on the new guys before they gave up. Barr was willing to go the distance and then some. Starocci called him “a lunatic.” “I wanna see how long these guys can go for until they break,” Starocci said. “It’s always that one guy when you wrestle, ‘Alright bro, I’ve gotta go.’ So who is going to be that guy? And I remember we were going for like five straight hours and he just kept coming back to the middle.” That experience, coupled with the results Barr has turned in as the team’s preferred 197-pounder, has led Starocci to conclude that Barr could stack trophies just as he has. “He just won’t stop,” Starocci said. “He’s one of those guys that’s going to be really good and he’s going to be the next four-time champ.” See https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/13586005-penn-state-wrestling-room-keeping-carter-starocci-sharp Really explains a lot, doesn't it? The late-match techs of Poznanski and McDanel, putting up a major on Beard? Looks like iron's been sharpening iron. My guess is Barr majors Cardenas, and outlasts Ferrari at the end as he did Little. Buchanan's the best of his opposition IMO, and I'm gonna give Buchanan the narrow win on Friday, which Barr avenges in March.

  4. Offthemat - you are missing the point. The fires and their destruction are not the fault of the government, period. No amount of information to the contrary is allowed or will be processed. All that does in disrupt the narrative a certain group is trying to make stick. It doesn't matter if the reservoir was dry and closer to the fire. If it had been full there would have been less pipe flow resistance because of the shorter pipes because the reservoir was closer. That's not the government's fault. It doesn't matter if the grasses and shrubs surrounding the area were cut short or not. Short or tall grasses and shrubs all burn the same. That's not the government's fault. It doesn't matter if The Fire Budget was decreased. That's not the government's fault. It doesn't matter if the governor let the volunteers go. That's not the government's fault. It doesn't matter if the bond measure that passed 6 years ago to raise taxes to increase reservoir volume was never started, that is not the government's fault. What is it that you don't understand? mspart

  18. Are you talking about the 2019 Lincoln Memorial confrontation? You need to get your facts straight 1) "According to witnesses and video subsequently appearing on social media, the Black Hebrew Israelite men shouted racist slurs at the high school students as well as Native Americans.[10][24][32] They called the students "a bunch of incest babies", future "school shooters", and "dirty ass little crackers", and said "you give faggots rights".[24][37][38][39] Many students reacted by saying things such as "whoa" and "easy".[39] The Hebrew Israelites also called a passing black man who tried to disagree with them a "coon", told indigenous activists that the word Indian means "savage", and said to a woman who had stopped to argue with them: "Where's your husband? Bring your husband. Let me speak to him." 2) The first social media video clips were short and focused on this moment, leading to initial harsh criticism of the high school students, who some described as mocking and harassing the elder. Some people affiliated with the March described the boys as appearing threatening due to their numbers, actions, and the "Make America Great Again" caps and clothing that some wore.[10] By January 20, longer videos had been uploaded. Phillips clarified that it was he who had approached the crowd of students, in what he said was an attempt to defuse what Phillips perceived to be a brewing conflict between the students and a third group of five men who were identified as Black Hebrew Israelites who had been taunting the white students with homophobic slurs.

Distributing recovery and reconstruction grants and loans are part of their responsibility. It’s possible that they’ve become too big, too distracted or misdirected since becoming part of Homeland Security, but what you’re hearing here is that they are an all around failure.

  35. So what I am hearing is that the government did everything possible to prevent this fire but it happened anyway. Therefore all this complaining about the government is completely 100% unfounded. I just have to say I'm not buying that. I don't think they could have prevented the fire but I think they could have mitigated the effects with good maintenance management. They know it will come. Prepare. I get how water pressure goes down with demand. But if the situation had been better prepared for, there wouldn't have been the need to have all the hydrants going at the same time. Granted, I am an armchair quarter back here. I think the disconnect here is that this was a neighborhood. Not some forest land with thousands of acres to burn between like between Redding and Dunsmuir. This went through a neighborhood boasting very rich and famous people. It seems like the fire could have been addressed before it got completely out of control. Maybe that wasn't possible. We'll learn that as time goes on whether that was the case or not. mspart

  41. You're just in a rush. Barr may very well be a legitimate contender, but until he beats another contender, it's fair to call him a "maybe contender." Lilledahl was being credited as a contender and just lost to Dean who is a mid-ranked 125. We don't yet know where Barr is in comparison to Buchanon, Cardenas, or Ferrari. He could beat them, or he could be a step behind. We just don't know yet. But if you want to blanket everyone that wrestles for PSU as invincible then go ahead. McIntosh was pretty good, but how many titles did he win?
