  1. While you're at it, can we get rid of the stupid bob dole face as the default reaction? It was funny for about 5 seconds but time to move back to the standard thumbs-up.

  6. The Democratic proposal to tax unrealized gains is an incredibly bad idea. The current proposal is on anyone worth more than $100 million with at least 80% of their worth in liquid assets. There are almost too many things wrong with this to list, but hear goes. - There is no way over time that $100 million will remain the limit. It will soon be $10 million, then $1 million, then $500k, etc. Governments have zero discipline. A new kind of revenue will always be grown. And the only exemption will be for legislators. - The value of illiquid assets will suddenly become the province of the one entity that stands to gain from inflating that opinion. The moral hazard here is clear. - The value used for liquid assets will also be incorrect. For valuation purposes of equities, for example, we use the closing price. But this is typically the price of buying or selling a very small number of shares. Anyone covered by the tax will likely own a large number of shares. Forced selling to meet a tax obligation will depress those shares, meaning more shares will need to be sold to raise 25% of the incorrect value, meaning the effective tax will be greater than 25%. Meanwhile, all of our shares will also be worth less, and not for economic reasons. - Anyone wealthy enough to be covered by the tax initially is also wealthy enough to leave the country. Capital flight will be real. - The incentive is perverse. One theory of taxation is you tax the thing you want less of. Similar to tariffs, it makes the thing more expensive and incentivizes people to seek alternatives. The alternative to investing is consuming. And like tariffs it makes the alternative more expensive by removing competitive pressure. So we consume more at inflated prices, so we get less. I am sure there are other reasons as well that I haven't thought of. What say all of you?

  12. Ben Askren, a pretty good wrestler and coach, doesn't seem to be a fan of holding kids back. I know he definitely feels NOT being held back helped him in the long run. His belief is that graduating on time gave him quicker access to tougher training partners, D1 competition, D1 training and facilities, and D1 coaching (although he had a great high school coach.) He felt that getting all that stuff a year earlier (actually on time) put him ahead of many of his contemporaries.

  18. Here is another example of people needing to think critically about what the media is telling you. US Army rebukes Trump campaign for incident at Arlington National Cemetery | CNN Politics It is crazy how this got turned into a Political incident because Trumps team was taking pictures that the Gold Star family asked for. My guess is the cemetery employee who claims was "pushed aside" hates Trump and turned this into a bigger deal than it needed to be. Will be interesting to see if the video comes about what really happened.

  19. This right here, what @Interviewed_at_Weehawken said is spot on. Colleges, Universities, and the NCAA asymmetrically benefitted from a contrived moniker of "amateur" for many decades, using this to pretend that the education they weren't giving their athletes was actually worth something. That entire era was hot garbage for athletes. Schools could and did behave any way they wanted towards their athletes. Administrators weren't and still aren't held to any moral standards or codes, they just get paid to keep the money machine running. Being an AD is really an in-house tv negotiations and PR exec position at the big schools. Maurice Clarett is a perfect example. He didn't play ball with the Ohio State AD, got railroaded out of a very lucrative career bc he wouldn't kiss the ring. Kids are finally getting what they are worth in the market, and institutions which have done everything in their power to arrange asymmetric agreements with everyone they do business with throughout history (hello student loans being resilient to bankruptcy) are just salty they have lost hold of power they once had. TV and the NCAA did a great snow job on us, and yes old school games and matches were fun to watch, but let's not pretend that just bc we like watching college sports that it was any sort of fair and equitable arrangement for the athletes. Our enjoyment and pleasure on saturday evenings in front of the television came at the expense of thousands of young people's health and futures. NIL, while different, does right by the people creating the entertainment product and putting their bodies and their health on the line. That is 100% the way it should be.

  21. Here's a real world example. Let say ~30 years ago I bought some farm land for $1,500/ac and its now worth $16,500/ac. In this theoretical example I've been paying the property taxes on the increasing assessed value every year along with the increasing income taxes every year. Now I'm faced with taxes on an unrealized $3M gain. How am I going to pay that? Now you could say doesn't apply since not a liquid asset but just like the $100M to $1M to &500k as Wkn indicated once politicians get their claws in a new revenue stream they will just keep expanding. But to the liquid asset point. Let's say Wkn drives down to Kentucky to purchase a full barrel of his favorite bourbon. But let's be real, if he makes the drive he's gonna fill the truck with four barrels, but I digress. As soon as he leaves the distillery for some reason that bourbon just went up in value 50%. Liquid assets, tax law applies to Wkn when is he going to pay the tax? Will he try to consume before filling taxes? Now you might ask how long would it take Wkn to consume a full barrel of bourbon but thats not the point.

  30. I'm still seeing a lot of discussion elsewhere about why people are mad at all the transfers, and something occurred to me about why I get worried about high reliance on transfers. Transfers are good, but they also have a way of hollowing out a program. It turns into a revolving door of just purchasing wrestlers, as opposed to actually recruiting and developing. It never really occurred to me until earlier today, transfers aren't anything new, and I don't recoil at the concept of early-career transfers, but I do recoil at the concept of filling a roster with late stage transfers who have limited eligibility left, because I worry about the innate ability for the Iowa program to sustain itself and develop nationally competitive wrestlers. There are certain stalwart programs that are a bellwether of health of the sport overall, and Iowa running on transfers to me looks like the wheels starting to wobble because in-house development isn't going well. Ultimately, our sport is one that runs on healthy, competitive rooms. Reliance on transfers feels like an NFL lineman just pounding Toradol ignoring issues that are cropping up. The bill comes due eventually, just a matter of when you pay it, and how large it is.

  38. I don't really agree with this. I follow what people are trying to say, but I think it cherry picks the data by removing wrestlers like Lawson, Kerkvliet and Mesenbrink from the analysis and turns a more general point into a PSU point. There is a selection bias to the transfers that go to big schools like PSU, Iowa, and Michigan. They are mostly not top 20 guys out of high school that made significant improvement in college and are transferring at a high point. The improvement left to make is the most difficult and there is plenty of room to go down. Still they get better on average Which school has done better with transfers? PSU: Sanderson, Long, Lawson, Cortez, Kuhn, Conel, Kerkvliet, Dean, Hildebrandt, Mesenbrink, Nagao, Truax. 11AAs, 2 Titles, 6 years of eligibility remaining at PSU Iowa: Lugo, DeSanto, Eierman, Teske, Swafford, Woods, Franek, Caliendo, Voinovich, Parco, Teemer, Buchanan, Joey Cruz 9AAs, 0 titles, 10 years of eligibility remaining at Iowa. OSU: Caldwell, White, Smith, Geer, Young, Spratley, Jamison, Olejnik, Amine, Fish, Hamiti, Hendrickson 7 AAs, 0 titles, 12 years of eligibility remaining at OSU. Michigan: Micic, Storr, Finesilver, Brucki, Suriano, Davison, Cannon, DeAugustino, Griffith, Saldate, Cardenas 6AAs, 1 title, 4 years of eligibility remaining at Michigan Bold= transferred after AA placement at previous institution Italic = transferred after national title at previous institution

  41. So you prefer a career politician like Biden who has been there for 40+ years and made millions off of being bought for political influence? Got it. I don't know if you know this or not but Russia and Ukraine had already signed a peace deal but the Biden administration pressured them into ripping it up. Trump will take care of it when he gets into office. He doesn't like to launder billions of tax dollars to foreign countries to keep them quiet about his dirty dealings during his time as VP.

  42. I think it goes like this: 2021 - free COVID year 2022 - used 1st year of eligibility by participating in >30% of competitions AND started the clock on his 5 year window to use 4 years. 2023 - 5 year window still running, this is year two. Technically not a redshirt since he was not on a roster. 2024 - possible oly redshirt or year 2 of eligibility, AND either the window pauses with the ORS or year 3 of 5 year window. 2025 - either year 2 or 3 of eligibility, AND either year 3 or 4 of the 5 year window. 2026 - either year 3 or year 4 of eligibility, AND either year 4 or year 5 of the 5 year window. 2027 - either year 4 or awaiting entry into the Oklahoma, Iowa, California, and National HOF's, AND either year 5 of the 5 year window or he is working on that 666th pound.
