  2. My thoughts/feelings on it exactly. He was very one-dimensional last hear, I think people just didn’t take him seriously, so everyone let him throw in legs. This year people just didn’t give him that position, and it went well. Guys who transfer into PSU always take a step down the first year, some improve others don’t. My assumption has always been that life in that room is WAY harder than what they were used to, and it shows because transfers always look shell shocked AND look less practiced in their old style of moves. Truax also looked rather deer in the headlights all year, he just made it happen when it mattered, but nobody would have been super surprised if he didn’t AA either. It’s a room that clearly doesn’t work for everyone, and universally even the full pull PSU guys talk about the first yesr just being a butt whooping.

  5. Very few like or appreciate Iowa style wrestling anymore. It's unattractive in the 2000s. It's based on some fiction of a tough macho, self-sacrificing man. Marlboro Man. It's low scoring. It's not fan friendly. It is rooted in the Brands' experience at very low weights and doesn't work well in an era scrambling and funk. It doesn't appeal to recruits. It is not enjoyable to watch. The Brands don't get this and they think being stubborn is being resolute and strong. These spark plugs and fire hydrant coaches aren't going to change. And they will only fall behind further while the peanut-crunching crowd gets louder .... in its impatience and disapproval. But the midwest also doesn't like change either and doesn't know what to do. It's more earth than water or fire. It loves authoritarians not innovators.

  6. I just went back and watched this year's Brooks Hidlay final. That was an absolute stomping. The score doesn't show it, but that was the least competitive match they've had across the entirety of their series of matches against one another. Hidlay couldn't move Brooks at all. Brooks already looked like the bigger guy at WTT last year, I don't think anybody at 86kg is going to bring any sort of challenge to these two, and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a 2021 Tokyo JB/Dake-style dethroning this year. It's not what anybody is expecting, but after watching that match again...I'm penciling that in as my most likely dark horse upset.

  8. Michigan had a very good season. They took second at Big Tens and third at NCAAs, their second trophy in two years. Dual season was inconsistent. Ragusin and Bullock had their best seasons, as did two of their transfers, Gomez and Davison had outstanding NCAA tournaments with their best career finishes. Griffith had an outstanding tournament after a bit of a dip last season. Lemley progressed all season then had a tough NCAAs as a true freshman. Lewan and Amine had tough seasons. Lewan’s style caught up with him, same with Amine to a lesser extent. Hopefully he can bounce back next year. So I think they’re a lot most teams. Some guys make jumps, some falter, etc.

Interesting that another FT position in the SUNY system is currently open down the road at DIII Brockport. He might not even have to move!

  10. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/florida-governor-ron-desantis-signs-212011291.html Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Legislation to 'End the Squatters Scam & Protect Homeowners' In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he signed legislation “to end the squatters scam & protect homeowners.” "We are putting an end to the squatters scam in Florida," DeSantis said in a release on his website. "While other states are siding with the squatters, we are protecting property owners and punishing criminals looking to game the system." Under HB 621, “a property owner can request law enforcement to immediately remove a squatter from their property” if certain conditions are met, and it “also creates harsh penalties for those engaged in squatting and for those who encourage squatting and teach others the scam.” It is about time that a state has taken this path. For too long it has been legally acceptable for squatters to take over a house. And the property owner, who pays the property taxes, has no rights to get rid of them. That is just plain wrong. Hopefully other states around the country will jump on board. This is a long time coming and is a good thing for the property rights of property owners. mspart

  15. Well, that's a lie. Last year's recruiting class was top ten with three of them starting in the Big Ten Tournament as true Freshmen. And none of those three were any of these guys [my comments in brackets]: Kannon Webster (Washington, Illinois) Washington Community High School Webster is the top-ranked recruit of this Illini class coming in at 21st overall. He is a two-time Illinois State Champion and carries a 45-3 record with three pins. He recently won the Maryville Open at 141 pounds via 11-4 decision. [He won that third state championship, won another couple of Fargo titles, wrestled in Who's #1, and was 18-1 as a redshirt with that one loss being very questionable.] Braeden Scoles (Kewaskum, Wisconsin) Kewaskum High School Scoles was a highly touted recruit in this class, ranked at 28th overall. He is a three-time Wisconsin State Champion and just recently went 7-1 enroute to third at the USA Wrestling Junior Championships. He carried a 54-2 record throughout his young career with 21 pins. [Braeden won his fourth Wisconsin state championship and a Fargo title and wrestled in Who's #1, giving young Ferrari the best match he had. Recently won the Zingo Nationals after cradling everybody from his opponents to the timekeepers. Same with Kannon Webster. Also beat an NCAA qualifier in a spot start in a dual.] Will Baysingar (Mount Prospect, Illinois) Mount Prospect High School Baysingar is the second home grown prospect and slots in as the 52nd ranked recruit. He is a two-time Illinois State Champion and most recently won the Illinois Greco-Roman State Champ title at 138 pounds via technical fall 8-0. [Baysingar got two starts in duals as a true Freshman and currently has a Wrestlestat.com #64 ranking at the weight as a reserve.] Chris Moore (McHenry, Illinois) McHenry High School Moore is the final Illinois prospect Poeta added to this 2023 cycle. Moore is an Illinois State Champion and recently earned a runner-up finish at the IHSA Boys Individual State final at 160 pounds. [Chris went on to win his second IHSA title, so he was a 3-time finalist, 2-time champion. He ended up in the big board rankings because he too won a Fargo title. Most importantly, though, he stepped in and earned the starting role at 165 and qualified for the NCAA tournament as a true Freshman with wins over Caleb Fish and Stoney Buell.] Hudson Goebel (Findlay, Ohio) Findlay High School Goebel is the last out-of-state recruit and final piece of this 2023 class. He is a OHSAA State Finalist and most recently he earned a runner-up finish at the OHSAA State Tournament. [Hudson's season was interrupted by injury, but he's a talented kid from Ohio, which is something ILLINI fans like to see.] Then, this season, the ILLINI didn't have as many scholarships to give because of the huge class the year before, but still ended up with two ILLINOIS three-time state champions and a two-time state champion and three-time finalist from Ohio. Another lie, or perhaps you didn't do your homework before spouting off, who knows? In any event, the ILLINI will be moving into a state-of-the-art wrestling facility smack dab next to State Farm Center in 2025. So, Coach Poeta not only got the facility funded, and not only did he get the recruits, but, my friend, you've got nothing. 17. The Brandses have not recruited as well the past 12 years as they did at the beginning of their tenure in Iowa city. Below is a table I made with the number of top 25 recruits for a selection of top teams from 2005-2024. A top 25 recruit should roughly equate to a top 10 wrestler assuming the rankers are able to accurately determine which wrestlers will be have the best college careers. From 2005-2012 Iowa had the second most top 25 recruits (16) behind only OSU (19). All these years were Brands years except 2005. He was at Virginia Tech that season where he was able to recruit 3 top 25 wrestlers who all ultimately ended up at Iowa, so including that they would be tied with OSU. Best recruiting in D1 up until 2013. Since 2012 Iowa has not been as successful in recruiting top 25 wrestlers. They have not had more than 2 in a season with 2023 being the exception. That year was is kind of an exception which may be partially explained by the unusually good recruiting class the state of Iowa produced in 2023. In 2023 there were 3 Iowa natives in the top 25 recruits and all committed to Iowa. Only three times in the 2005-2024 time period has the state of Iowa produced at least 3 top 25 recruits; 2023 (3), 2012 (3), and 2005 (4). Each of these seasons Iowa/Brands has had an excellent recruiting class. In the 2013-2024 time period Iowa's ability to recruit top 25 wrestlers has diminished with PSU, OSU, and Ohio State routinely out recruiting them. Their peers are now teams like Minnesota, Cornell, Michigan, Nebraska, VT, and NC State.

  18. I believe in one tax rate regardless of income that is accurately enforced. I know, shit in one hand and wish in the other and see which one gathers first. But, I don’t believe in “you make more money so you owe a higher ratio of your money. Even at a single rate if a person makes more money they are contributing more in taxes. I don’t make a lot of money, but let them do their thing. I believe most would be less likely to try to ‘cheat’ the system if the system was the same for everyone. then again I’m smart enough to know I’m not smart enough to have it all figured out….

  19. Not true. Braeden Scoles is a Wisconsin 4xer and Fargo Champion who will do big things in college and was high up in the P4P rankings, and like Webster, was a Who's #1 wrestler. He had an injury this year that slowed him down, but not before he beat an NCAA qualifier in a "free" dual appearance early in the season. Chris Moore was another Fargo Champion, and he was forced into the lineup this year at the toughest weight, 165, and still became an NCAA qualifier with wins over Caleb Fish and Stoney Buell. Add Will Baysingar to the P4P list coming out of high school. The class coming in this year includes two ILLINOIS three-time state champs (Ruzic & Colon), along with a two-time Ohio state champ (Bennett), and they are all vicious pinners. I'm very excited about them in an impartial journalistic way! With a new state-of-the-art facility coming on line in 2025 next to the giant spaceship (State Farm Center), and with everybody coming back from Olympic redshirts (Zac & Danny Braunagel), Medical redshirts (Lucas Byrd) and injuries (Luuuke Luffman) along with returning AA Edmond Ruth and a couple other NCAA qualifiers, and with the Freshmen entering the lineup (Webster, Scoles, etc.), they will have a powerful team and a very solid basis for recruiting in the years to come. As a final note, somebody upthread indicated that Danny Brawlnagel was on a regular redshirt. That is also not true. He earned an Olympic redshirt with his placement in the qualifying tournament over the Summer. Look for him at OTT at 77kg in Greco.

  20. Back in the 70's they had a rule that if you took two steps backwards, it was an automatic warning. It was a great rule until it just became pushing with no real attempt to attack. Stall calls in the first 10 seconds of a match...7:50 left to avoid getting called again. Consequently, it didn't last too long. So, if someone "steps out" of bounds, he gets penalized? I have watched enough wrestling in my lifetime where I truly cannot determine who went out of bounds first. So, that situation will be left to the ref to determine the guilty party or the silly brick gets thrown and we spend another 3-4 minutes watching video in slow motion several times to determine who went OB. Flow, momentum, stamina, among other things are now affected. Part of one's job is to expose an opponent who is avoiding "wrestling." To do that requires skill and tactical knowledge. The rules for stalling are already in place. Understanding the "stalling" rules either exposes the staller or disguises the staller. Smart wrestlers know how to do both. I really do not understand why being shrewd and clever to work the rules to your favor is so repulsive. What many of you are proposing is just moving more to freestyle. Why?

  26. Mediocre season, good post-season, which is all anybody cares about. Davison, Gomez, and Griffith all placed above where people would likely have expected them to place. They brought home the meat when it counted, and they proved to ALL the super-seniors around the country that they are the best environment for a 1-year plug and play.

  28. I think the Brands brothers are underachieving at Iowa - bringing in the Ford Focus to Iowa City was a sign of desperation. But, so long as Carver-Hawkeye sells out and Iowa wins 90 percent of their matches the Brands brothers will be fine for the foreseeable future. Beth Goetz has two much, much bigger fish to fry: 1) Figuring out the transition from Kirk Ferentz to whomever is next. Guessing that relationship is already frosty having made the HC fire his kid. 2) Figuring our the transition from their maniac Men's basketball coach (Fran McCaffery) to the next coach. That dude has had a sustained run of mediocrity, his son is transferring out, Iowa State's MBB program is in the Sweet 16, and those March Madness "points" pay a lot more to the school than success on the wrestling mat does.

  29. There's been no uptick in recruiting under Poeta. It looks like a continuation of the Heffernan regime. Lost out on Ben Devino to Ohio State and Seth Mendoza to Missouri. Can't keep talent instate which has been a constant issue since Mark Johnson left. If Poeta can't figure it out in the next two years, he needs to go. Find somebody that can turn a top 5 hs wrestling state into a perennial trophy contending team.

  30. Obviously some coaching changes could shake up a few rosters and make them seem almost, if not actually entirely different than last year. Given what we see right now and what we could see, I think there are a few teams that come to mind that could make another leap next season... and I don't think either of them are Stanford (with Koll's massive recruiting class) or North Carolina (I think he is at least a season away - if not two - from a trajectory leap there). Cal Poly, Chattanooga, and Illinois. Cal Poly They came in to the season with high expectations and because their upward trajectory didn't seem to pan out and LRA came 'out of nowhere' it can be ignored that they had a comparable season to last year. That is still a massive improvement for 3/4/5 years ago. If they were to play with their lineup a bit and get a solid incoming transfer (or two - ahem Saldate), they could make another step forward. They will need to with OSUW, ASU, and LRA all improving as well. I want to see them land Saldate (I will explain what I, as a fan, want to see below). They either need an incoming 141 125 - Mendez, SO 15W - 12L 133 - Romney, SO 19W - 9L 141 - Heracules Windrath, TrFR - He will need to live to his name... 149 - LEGEND Lamer, SR 15W - 12L 157 - CHANCE Lamer, JR 19W - 7L 165 - Wick, SO 14W - 12L - Coming off Injury 174 - Saldate, SR 25W - 8L - Incoming Grad Transfer 184 - DASCHLE Lamer, FR 8W - 4L 197 - Priest, SR 9W - 9L OR Hodges, FR 4W - 3L 285 - Tinker, JR 11W - 7L Their only true hole will be at 141lbs and I understand their valley could be right where they are now, depending on injuries, but their peak could be an outright P12 title. Saldate a double bump? Why? Because I don't think Wick has the strength, even if he has the length, to go 174lbs. I would be okay with the swap, though. Saldate could have a helluva chance for content on social medias with 'bulking' or whatnot. I think the 'smaller' Lamer brothers swap and both will see an increase in productivity. Big Lamer will wrestle outside his weight class for a season, though. He'll be fine as I think he should focus on 184lbs long-term anyways. Priest? He is a 165lber at heart, but he always gives it his full-go. Anyone else care to give it ago? With a breakdown with hows and whys? Illinois and Chattanooga to follow...

  34. Delaying kindergarten by a year by doing another year of preschool, and delaying your HS freshman year by a year to do nothing but train and play video games, are apples and oranges. Delaying kindergarten is very common and there is nothing illegal about it, although it is an example of privilege. i know repeating 8th grade for athletes is somewhat common, but I was not aware it was common for kids to do nothing but train and play video games during that year. In my area the kids that repeated 8th grade usually went to private school though (another example of privilege I guess), because I imagine the public schools weren’t on board with holding back a kid that was ready for HS.

I don't think I saw Hidlay get to his underhook a single time.

  37. This is the most common way that kids get their extra year in so that they don't lose HS eligibility... stay in 8th grade twice. Go to a charter in 8th grade, then move to public and stay in 8th grade (or vice versa) and claim "they need an extra year academically." You can also stay in 8th grade then "homeschool" for a year before entering high school. Lots of ways to stay back in middle school an extra year. It's been going on a long time. And no...19 is not the normal age to graduate.

  38. Biden Administration's Terrorist Pier in Gaza: The Trojan Horse For Terrorists to Take Over the Region by Bassam Tawil March 27, 2024 at 5:00 am Placing Qatar -- rather than, say, the United Arab Emirates -- in charge of the Gaza pier entrenches a terrorist-sponsoring Trojan Horse at Hamas's beck and call. Qatar will use the pier to supply Hamas with more money and more powerful weapons. The port will also undoubtedly be used to smuggle Islamist jihadis from all around the world into the Gaza Strip to launch more massacres against Israelis. Qatar has a long history of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and its Islamist offshoots, but also Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Hezbollah and the Al Nusra Front. If Qatar really wants an end to the Israel-Hamas war, all it has to do is order its Hamas puppets immediately and unconditionally to release all the Israelis kidnapped by Hamas terrorists October 7 and held hostage in the Gaza Strip. Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashaal, who are based in Doha, would not be able to refuse. Qatar is their lifeline. The Qataris, however, are evidently in no rush to pressure Hamas: Qatar is clearly facing no pressure from the Biden administration. On the contrary, the Biden administration just agreed to extended Qatar's ability to host America's Al-Udeid Air Base, the headquarters of CENTCOM, for another ten years – for nothing in return. "Congress must weigh in and cancel the 10-year extension of the military base in Qatar... The U.S. should seize assets tied to individuals and entities in Qatar for supporting terrorist groups, especially those tied to Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism.... It's time to put Doha on notice that they are jeopardizing their relationship with the U.S. by providing material support to designated terrorist groups. Qatar is clearly acting like a state sponsor of terror and should not be allowed to use the U.S. banking system to bypass existing, though not enforced, sanctions on funding Iran and its terrorist proxies." — Former US intelligence officer Michael Pregent, The Hill, January 22, 2024. The US should definitely start withdrawing from Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Thanks to the Biden administration -- which is also pressuring Israel not to eliminate the remaining Hamas terrorist battalions in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah -- Qatar and its Hamas pawns are having the last laugh. In light of the Biden administration's decision to turn itself into an ally of terrorists and their supporters, such as Hamas and Qatar – instead of strengthening US relations with Israel and its allies in the Gulf who are fighting terrorism -- it is a very long last laugh, indeed.

  43. Thing were rough for Northwestern after Pariano left and didnt' get better when Howe and the assistants took off during Covid. The other thing NU has going against it are its academics, compounded by being on a quarter system. The season can span all three quarters. That's two sets of finals, with Big Tens usually around the same time as Winter quarter finals week, and also missing out on spring break. All on top of training, competing, and cutting weight. Similar for Stanford. Mentally, that can be pretty tough compared to equally competitive schools that are on the semester system.
    1 point
  44. That's a tough one and why there likely won't be a change. The existence of an obvious replacement candidate was probably the main reason Zaelsky got the axe back in 2006. On the other hand you never know who will apply when the position opens up. The Iowa job is definitely a top 3 position in the sport. I would think any current head coach with ambitions of winning a national title would consider applying. Any wrestler nearing retirement with head coaching aspirations would consider it. I doubt PSU had a successor lined up when they sacked Sunderland and that worked out fine. Sean Bormet, Mike Grey, Kevin Dresser, Larry Jones, Tony Robie, Tom Ryan, Mark Manning, Brian Smith, Pat Popolizio, Brandon Eggum, Rob Koll, Doug Schwab, Ryan Morningstar, Casey Cunningham, Tony Ramos, Brent Metcalf, Bill Zadick, Dan Dennis, Jake Varner, Logan Stieber, Tervel Dlahnev, Nick Gwiazdowski, Kyle Dake, David Taylor, Jordan Burroughs - none of those guys are refusing a phone call to discuss the Iowa job. OSU gave Tommy Chesbro the axe in 1984. OSU was coming off a pair of NCAA runner up performances and had consecutive undefeated dual teams and conference titles. They had beaten Iowa in the dual two years in a row only to finish behind them at NCAAs and winning a team title was the standard. Chesbro had not done that since 1971. His team finishes at NCAAs were 4,1,3,5,3,3,3,2,3,6,2,4,4,4,2, and 2 and he produced 3,3,0,0,0,1,1,2,1,1,2,1,0,2, and 2 (19 total) individual national champions in those years. His teams had won the Big 8 title 8 times and been in the top 5 at NCAAs every year except 1. Gable had won 7 consecutive NCAA titles in 8 seasons at Iowa and you might not think he would be interested, but he still had a conversation with OSU about the position and they offered it to him. I think if there is an opening at Iowa, OSU, or PSU all the big names take that call. Whoever Iowa wants will have a bag of money thrown at them to take the position.

  45. I have to wonder if there are two things at play here: 1. Tom Brands' expectations.. 2. Beth Goetz's (Iowa Director of Athletics) expectations On the one hand, this has to feel like another miserable failure to Tom Brands. Only one guy in the finals, only four All-Americans, finishing "a lowly" fifth in the team standings, one spot/1.5 points behind Iowa State, and 105.5 points out of first... One the other hand, Beth Goetz may see it as a top five team finish (one finals win away from being tied for third), nine National Qualifiers, a National finalist (on ESPN) and four All-Americans. She may also see/understand that Brands' teams have never finished in less than eighth place (2007, his first season as head coach was when they finished there), and in 18 seasons the Hawkeyes have brought the University 14 team trophies, including winning four team titles. Other than Sanderson, there isn't a single other coach in NCAA Division I wrestling with that consistency in the last two decades. All the while, Brands' teams keep generating a TON of press (eyes on the U), continue to sell out dual meets and the donations to the program keep rolling in the door. Men's Wrestling is easily the gold standard of athletics programs on their campus, and rightfully so. If I had to guess (and this is just a guess), Tom Brands' job is probably pretty secure at this point.
