  2. This is going to take a while, so you might want to go grab a beer. We'll need a legend to keep track of everything. So here's the legend: LEGEND OLYMPIC RED SHIRT MEDICAL RED SHIRT INJURY SURGERY REGULAR RED SHIRT 125. CARDANI. He missed last season because of an INJURY that required SURGERY. He has worn a large shoulder brace all this season. 133. BYRD/MADRIGAL. This was a double-whammy. Over the Summer Lucas Byrd was going to qualify for the Olympics in Greco. He was signed up to do so, and he's made age-group teams in the past. My money would've been on him, but he suffered an INJURY to his hand/wrist. I don't know if it required SURGERY but suspect that it did. He's had either padding or a brace on his hand/wrist for months. He had to take a MEDICAL RED SHIRT. Luckily, Tony Madrigal wanted to finish up his eligibility at the U of I. Unfortunately, he suffered a hamstring INJURY pretty early in the season and missed duals. He came back and suffered a re-INJURY of the hamstring. Good news is that he's back and looks great. 141. PUCINO. Unknown INJURY or illness kept him out of a couple duals this season. 149. WEBSTER. The question was whether he would take his true Freshman redshirt. In the end, the decision was made to take a REGULAR RED SHIRT. The good news is that Kannon and Braeden Scoles showed up at the Zingo Nationals and cradled everybody from the ticket-taker to the referees. 157. ROBERTS. A lot happened here. Austin O'Connor became an assistant coach, and wrestled with Joe. He said Joe has what it takes to challenge for the podium. But, Joe had some concussion issues. He had a re-INJURY during the season. On top of that, he suffered an INJURY to his hand, which caused him to miss duals and eventually wear a wrap that looked like an oven mitt. 165. LITTLE BRAWNY. He is training for his shot at the Olympics and is wearing an OLYMPIC RED SHIRT. The good news here is that he has apparently become even better at hand-fighting because, hey, you know, hand-fighting is what Greco dudes do. 184. CONNELL. Dylan had an INJURY to his foot/ankle early in the season. He then had a re-INJURY to the same foot/ankle at Midlands. The good news: He should now be healthy and have his gas tank back. Only 8 auto-bids at this weight at the Big Ten tournament, so he'll need to kick butt. 197. THICC BRAWNY/PETTIGREW. OMG. Where do we even start? The Brawlnagel is on an OLYMPIC RED SHIRT. Isiah Pettigrew was doing well in the lineup and then suffered a knee INJURY. He had SURGERY and came back about a month later. What a BAMF! 285. LUFFMAN. Big Luuuke had an INJURY that required SURGERY. He will hopefully have a MEDICAL RED SHIRT for this season. If not, he still has eligibility remaining.

I want to read this forum of forbidden ideas hidden away in a dark place by myself so no one will know I am being misinformed by some of the most unapproved facts and opinions conceivable and the counterarguments by those unable to reasonably counter or argue. No room for ad hominen attacks here. Even when the subject of your attack is barely hominen.

  6. Tweet: 1 point red for unsportsmanlike behavior from blue. Inner drive, resolve to succeed 'in spite of', and the capacity to resist impulses are 90% of what makes success open to anyone in America. This is otherwise known as motivation, determination, and willpower. If you do not like your life, then [continuously] choose to change your life. ...but climate, money, food, time, knowledge, skills, competency, access—you name it. These are masks for "I don't want to." But X-man has resources and privileges, and it's unfair to those with less. AND? Take that weak mindset out of here. An accountable mindset does not exclude helping others and having compassion. I love helping others achieve. I hate feeding an undriven lifestyle to those that don't care to better themself. Outside of health issues and 'acts of god'... with rare exceptions, anyone can succeed if willing to sacrifice. You know what your true desires are when you go get it or die trying.

  27. In the interim between the B1G regular season and the B1G conference tournament, I couldn’t figure out what to write about. Then I thought, everyone loves awards and categories (everyone does, this is not up for debate), so that’s what I’m giving you. Will these awards be repeated next year? Who knows! Are there physical awards being handed out? Absolutely not! Will the winners be telling their grandkids about this? Most definitely. Let’s get right to it! Breakout star - This award goes to Ryder Rogotzke of Ohio State. There were several strong candidates for this award, but I can’t get past Ryder “Ride or Die” Rogotzke and his ability to seemingly beat anyone at any given time. The Buckeye true freshman started the season by losing his challenge match to Seth Shumate, but has finished the season by earning the coveted “Black Shirt” status, and compiling a 15-6 record (13 pins and one technical fall, which if my math checks out, means that he had 1 actual decision victory on the year). There has been some exciting action from newcomers this season, but none as consistently exciting as Ryder. He’s ready to get weird with it, so be ready to watch it all unfold. B1G Wrestler of the Year - People think that wrestlers go through a grind during the college wrestling season. I’m not saying that they don’t, but don’t underestimate the grind and laborious nature of picking the B1G Wrestler of the Year. So many Nittany Lions to choose from! Do we go with the most wins? I can’t bring myself to do that. Despite Beau Bartlett having the most wins, he was less dominant than many of his high-profile teammates. I can’t use winning percentage, because there are too many guys who remain undefeated on the team (the aforementioned Beau Bartlett, Levi Haines, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks, and Greg Kerkvliet). All of those guys also have won more than half of their matches by bonus points, but Aaron Brooks has an absurd 92.86% bonus point winning percentage (shoutout WrestleStat). Of his 14 wins, 13 have been by bonus points. In fact, to this point in the season, the only person to hold him to a regular decision was Zach Glazier of Iowa (5-1 decision) the 3 seed at 197 for the B1G tournament. It’s hard to argue that someone this dominant isn’t the B1G Wrestler of the Year. So congratulations Aaron Brooks! You did it! B1G Match of the Year - This is kind of a legacy award for me, but these two deserve it. I love the Wisconsin v Minnesota battles, and most specifically, the 125 pounders. We have been so lucky to watch Pat McKee and Eric Barnett battle so many times, and despite the head-to-head record being slightly in favor of McKee (6-4 McKee > Barnett to this point), the matches always seem to be insane and exciting to watch. I was genuinely bummed to see that McKee and Barnett weren’t on the same side of the B1G tournament brackets, but I truly hope they either both make the finals, or meet on the backside, because it’s straight-fire watching these two battle. It’s like the Game of Thrones episode “Battle of the Bastards”, but a wrestling match. This season, in McKee’s last home dual of his career, it started with a takedown for Barnett (who at this point held a 3-1 regular season win total over McKee) and an eventual 4-1 lead after an escape in the second. McKee however gets a shot of his own, culminating in a wild scramble, and an eventual figure four on the head of Barnett, ending up in a pin for the Golden Gopher. You’d think that maybe an overtime match or something else would win this award, but not this year. Congratulations to Barnett and McKee for this match, and the battles over the years. B1G Dual of the Year - There was a lot of build-up headed into Michigan v Ohio State, and it absolutely delivered. The Buckeyes hosted the Wolverines in this season's installment of the continued rivalry. The dual started in just about complete control for the road team, as they won four of the first five matches. Sadly, we missed out on a potentially awesome match at 141, as Sergio Lemley did not pass the skin check. I don’t know when it will happen, but Mendez v Lemley will eventually be so much fun for us all. I hope it happens sooner rather than later. The Buckeyes win their first match of the dual at 165 with a late takedown for Bryce Hepner to take the 12-10 win over Beau Mantanona. Shane Griffith gets the 2-1 win at 174 over another stud freshman in Rocco Welsh, bringing the Wolverine lead to 19-9. With three matches left, two of which Michigan was favored in, it felt like the dual was essentially over. At this point, Michigan had won all of the actual matches except for one. This is when Ohio State turned up the heat, with a huge 21-0 technical fall for Ryder Rogotzke over Jaden Bullock followed by a decision for Luke Geog over Rylan Rogers. Two matches and eight team points later, we enter heavyweight with freshman Nick Feldman taking on Lucas Davison, the multiple-time All-American transfer from Northwestern. Feldman stepped up big at home for his team, and sealed the dual victory with a 4-3 victory over Davison, declaring to the NCAA field that he is as dangerous as they come. It was a wild dual to watch when it happened, and kind of more wild to recap after the fact. Congratulations to the Ohio State Buckeyes on winning dual of the year. B1G Coach of the Year - This award I had to break up and share between two coaches. Cael Sanderson is undoubtedly one of those recipients. He just continues to win! Sure, he was expected to win with this roster and some of the recent transfers, but this has been especially impressive. Messenbrink is probably somehow better than we thought (and I thought he was going to be a super freak, but this is nuts), Starocci and Brooks' dominance has been great. Kerkvliet in a field without Parris or Steveson has clearly shown that he’s head and shoulders above the competition, and they even seemingly broke the curse of 125 with a beast in Braeden Davis. All of this deserves recognition and a share of the Coach of the Year award. But this is what was expected on some level right? We thought this team was going to be amazing, and it turns out that they’ve delivered on those expectations. What was a little surprising to me was just what Nebraska and coach Mark Manning have done. We knew that there were some returning studs in guys like Hardy, Lovett, Robb, and Allred, but what to expect from the rest of the Cornhusker team? Well, it turns out the answer was a lot. Caleb Smith has shown the ability to beat some of the nation's best as he transferred in from the SoCon, Antrell Taylor has beaten All-Americans and is clearly a guy to watch out for, they even got a 300+ pound defensive tackle from the football team to cut weight and be their Heavyweight. They currently sit in third place in both the Intermat dual and tournament rankings, and I don’t know if even the biggest Husker fan would have predicted that at the beginning of this season. Also, Lenny Pinto has clearly jumped levels this year and has a bright future for this squad. So congratulations to both Mark Manning and Cael Sanderson on your shared B1G Coach of the Year award.

  30. That is surprising. What I saw elsewhere is that the EIWA uses a very broad based point system, and so while DePrez does have the head-to-head and CR advantage, Cardenas likely scored higher based on overall resume. Still it's a head scratcher, but effectively a distinction without a difference. They should still meet in semis.

  33. Addressing Brody Teske's #14 pre-seed at 133: Brands: "There's just funny, there's funny things that go on." Translation: I still have no idea what goes on. Brands: "The timing was right. And, you know, we are going to do what's best for our athletes first. And in my assessment, in the program's assessment, it was right to get the timing right for the wrestle off." Translation: Look, clearly I had no idea what the timing of the Big 10 seeding procedure was when I decided to do a wrestle off after the Big 10 deadline. I mean, isn't that obvious by now? Hell, I did this two years in a row. Brands: "I have already said probably more than I want to say about it." Translation: Who the hell let this guy in the press conference anyway? Brands: "And away we go." Translation: Maybe next year I can make it three in a row. What were you nerds even talking about again?

  35. They are non-profits they're supposed to spend what they take in. It's a feature of the system. There is no incentive to maximize the surplus (what would be profit) since there are no owners to reap the reward. If the top 25 FBS football programs were forced to pay 50% of revenue to the players (like what the NBA does) the only reason it seems like it would cause them to go 50% into the red is because they are currently spending money like they don't have to pay the players anything. This has inflated spending on facilities and the salaries of coaches and administrators. Spending on facilities in many ways was a proxy for paying players. You cannot attract a top recruit by paying them $$ so you spend the money on facilities and use that to attract them. Compare the facilities at the FBS top 25 with AAA baseball, AHL Hockey, NBA G League, or the CFL. Compare the salaries of the coaches at these institutions with minor league sports managers in these leagues... Or compare them with top level pro managers. Nick Saban's annual salary would be top in either MLB or NHL and top 5 in the NBA. I mean this is far afield of the Dartmouth Basketball union which I don't think will be negotiating $$ in their first CBA since there is essentially is no revenue there to split. But supposing the SEC or Big Ten football players unionized collectively bargaining with its member institutions. I imagine an initial CBA with an SEC players union would be far less than a 50/50 split because of contractual obligations for inflated coach/administrator salaries and capital expenditures being on the books. A now realistic threat of the union not playing would probably result in an offer more than $0 with an annual ramp up throughout the term of the CBA. This would allow the institutions to adjust from spending 100% of revenue to something less. If teams in the conference falling into the red and not being able to compete is an issue that is largely a solved problem. The NBA's revenue sharing system not only splits revenue 50/50 between players and owners it also features a revenue sharing component where the top 1/3 or so of teams in revenue share revenue with the others. This ensures the rich big market teams have competitive opponents in smaller markets. In the NBA this might be the Warriors, Lakers, Bulls, Heat, 76ers, Celtics ect paying into a fund that is distributed to the likes of the Bucks, OKC, New Orleans, ect. In the SEC it would be Alabama. Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Texas A&M, paying to teams like Vanderbilt Arkansas, Mississippi State. Professional leagues have been paying their players for decades and decades and figured all of this stuff out.

  39. Essentially braves - I think most people want an immigration policy like the one not being enforced at the moment. Where the immigrants are vetted as being good people, and having some skills that the US is in need of. Just bringing in people to bring in people does not get you there. We need targeted immigration like the law says and unlike what has been happening for the last 3 years that the Ds are now crying about and want to blame on the Rs. This is a D manufactured problem and they need to fix it. Biden did it by EO and he can fix it by EO. Pretty easy. He doesn't need anymore authority. He doesn't need any more money. He doesn't need the ability to allow 1.8 million into the country and call them legal. He needs to enforce the law as written. That's all he needs to do. It really is quite simple. mspart

  42. This is true in general, but I don't think the gambling punishment qualifies as shenanigans. I also don't think a union changes the punishments of the Iowa/ISU players in any substantive way. All major North American professional sports leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS) have unions and prohibitions on gambling. There is often very little room for appeal when it comes to these kinds of violations. For example the NBA’s constitution and bylaws give broad authority to the league commissioner to punish any player who “directly or indirectly, wagers money or anything of value on the outcome of any game played by a team in the league operated by the Association.” After the accused has had a chance to answer the charges, “the decision of the Commissioner shall be final, binding and conclusive and unappealable.”

  43. That does the complexity of university finances a disservice. Determining which departments have which revenues attributed to them is the dance that CFO's play all year every year, and it is charitable to describe university accounting practices as misleading. I've spent a few years reading and dissecting and analyzing the financial statements of colleges large and small around the country. My computer currently has a few thousand audited financial statements in its download folder. If you care to do any digging yourself, just google "[Name of school] 990" which will pull up the Propublica form for each school. 99% of schools also file audited financial reports (hah), that show year over year fund flows and, primarily, serve to account for the way they use their endowments and contributions to pay for the operations of the school. Athletics is a major part of every school because, more often than not, even if the programs themselves don't do enough to get kids into the school, they do serve to cast a wider net to families who are interested in paying more for college. The Athletic departments, in this case, bolster the tuition revenue of the school. This is very common in small schools especially. The prospect of these schools in particular having to treat their athletes collectively as employees will break the back of most of them. It is a multi-million dollar reversal of direction of flow of funds annually. Considering that ~85% of schools ranked outside the top 30-40 nationally have run operating deficits since 2020, this trend will note reverse. The University model became entirely investment income dependent in the 2010's, what with rates being at historic lows and all, but now with rates going up and asset prices going down considerably, the tap is being shut off on the seemingly bottomless dividends that endowments could kick out to cover whatever costs needed to be covered. Endowment principal is now being used to cover the gap between tuition revenue and operating costs. Of all the many hundreds of schools I have looked at, I can think of less than ten that operate such that tuition revenue covers operating costs. Turning a significant source of revenue into an employment negotiation (making some assumptions here), will be very detrimental long term. Most schools have less than 5 years of operating costs in endowment reserves. Many have 3. Some like Drexel University, have less than 1. Broad spectrum unionization of athletics will likely lead to the closing of 20% of universities within the next 10 years if rates don't return to below 2%. Not that people came here for a High Ed Economics Market Report...
