  2. Lemley was one of the guys who impressed me against Penn State. I think he's a guy who has the potential to be a multi-time AA. As good as he is now and will be in the future, I don't think he's quite ready for this version of Jesse Mendez. I know Lemley's close match with Bartlett opened some eyes and probably elevated him to a lot of folks, but Bartlett's style welcomes close matches while Mendez is trying to wreck everyone in front of him. Mendez has bonus points in 15/18 matches this year. He's majored Hardy, majored and teched Cornella, and has two wins over Jack (including a fall). He also beat Happel (who majored Lemley) in the dual with UNI. I'm not saying there's no chance for Lemley to keep it close, but it's going to take a pretty big effort, thus my guess of a major. Frankly, if Ohio State and Penn State were wrestling this week, I'd be tempted to take Mendez by major over the version of Bartlett we saw against Lemley.

  3. Iowa's inability to hang on to the top spot at 125 is reflected in their inability to hang on to the projected second spot as Missouri returns to the position after a one month fall from grace. Meanwhile PSU extends their advantage to an expected 62 points. Still short of where the gap stood in the pre-season, but definitely going the wrong way for the field. PSU is getting dangerously close to doubling the second place total again.

  4. Fly says Michigan so feel like I should go with Ohioe State. Will Gomez even be there, what ducks will be sitting out on the pond? I dislike OhSt almost as much as Michicheat ... but I'll take OSUe in a nail biter.

  5. This is borne out in the Pilgrims experience. They were a commune where everything was held in the community. The results of that were similar to your example. Then individual enterprise was tried by allowing the folks to do with their land whatever they wanted. Soon food was more plentiful and general welfare increased dramatically. Equality of outcome leads to lower results, it is human nature. Individual accountability generally leads to greater results and better conditions for the community. That also is human nature. mspart

  6. Taylor's junior year when he took the Dake losses was also a masterclass: 30-3 record including the All Star Classic 14 pins + 10 techs + 5 majors and only ONE decision = 87.7% bonus rate despite three losses. If you replace Dake with that year's third place Tyler Caldwell, who Taylor majored 10-0, then it is very reasonable to assume that Taylor would have finished the year 33-0 with only a single decision for a bonus rate of 96.9%. Only a multiple time world champion and world/olympic medalist could stand up to the folkstyle force of what Taylor had transcended to. NCAA summary of Taylor by season since Wrestlestat didn't exist yet.

  7. 3 Like Russian hoax taken as truth? Like the lie that border patrol agents were whipping Haitians? Like the lie that a woman and two children were drowning in the Rio Grande and that TX officials prevented Border Patrol from saving them? Like Hunter's laptop was Russian disinformation? Each of these were accepted as truth until proven as lies, conspiracy theories. So the government is not in such a position to determine if something is a conspiracy theory or not as they promulgate them. So who then is that benevolent person? mspart

  15. I find it interesting that after proclaiming you didn’t understand how it was possible for Beard to be ranked behind Elam and Buchanan, you then immediately admit you don’t know any history of those 2, and we’re apparently unaware that Elam has placed 5,4,3 AT THIS WEIGHT, as well as undefeated. This has nothing to do with your lack of knowledge, I’m glad you’re getting into it. No shame there, at all. But, what concerns me was your willingness to have such a strong opinion about anything, while almost simultaneously admitting you don’t possess even the most basic relevant facts. I’m gonna guess you’re less than 40 years old and move on. Sorry, that sounds preachy or whatever. I just found that exchange interesting, that’s all. I should delete this whole post, but wth, no shame in sharing my stream of consciousness in this instance.

  20. I don't recall him in particular being the reason for the college division being excluded from the Div. I tournament. Personally, I liked seeing the D2 and 3 guys at the big dance, simply because it showed that whoever won it was truly the best NCAA wrester in the country. The people who didn't like it were probably the Div I coaches. Specifically, they didn't like it when guys like Haselrig, who were the best in their weight, but came from schools that had no chance of winning the team title, might knock one of their athletes into the consolation bracket or even out of the tournament, and significantly affect the team placings. As for his place among the great heavies, I thought he was very comparable to Baumgartner, who was about 6 years older than him. He had the same profile of a solid heavyweight who had amazing strength (someone once described it was like trying to take down tree trunks when getting to his legs), speed and overall athleticism. He won his first Div. I title as a sophomore in 1987 when he wasn't favored (Tom Erikson was the top seed but got upset by Dean Hall in the semis), and then went unbeaten for the rest of his career (only non-win was a draw to Joel Greenlee). He was a great competitor, but never had any truly epic collegiate matches. I believe he did enter the US Open at least once before deciding to go the NFL route where he was All Pro for years despite never having played college ball. So he should definitely be considered among the best collegiate heavyweight wrestlers of all time. I think he probably doesn't get quite as much attention as some others these days because no international career, more focus on football, and the substance abuse issues in the years following.

  23. I asked my three kids the old grading question. You know.. the one where the teacher decides to teach the class about socialism by giving every kid the same grade on tests. At first, everyone got a B, then a D, then an F. This concept was new to them, and they (11, 14, 17 years old) answered immediately and correctly as I told the story. How did the students' attitudes change after the first test? (the studiers were frustrated, the laggards were happy) Why do you think the average grade dropped in the second test? (the studiers lost motivation, the laggards stopped trying) What happened to the students' cooperation as the tests continued? (no effort from anyone)

  29. I am unsure about even an AA. I took a quick look at the #1 ranked wrestlers in D2 at each weight. They have very few matches against D1 comp, but even when they do the results are not great. They typically wrestle non-starters and typically do not win. Most of the wins come against guys ranked in the 100 to 300 range on wrestlestat. The one notable win I found was Ty McGeary, the West Liberty 184, with a 14-4 MD over Clarion's Cameron Pine, who is ranked 33 in D1.

  35. You only gave Geog 2 points for his win at 197. Score would be 18 to 13 . I'm calling Feldman with the upset to give Ohio State the win 16 to 15. Either way this should be a great dual .

  39. 125 I think DeAuggie has just too much 'old' in him for McCrone to handle. Not a very good style matchup for McCrone. The score might seem close, but I think DeAuggie wins a controlled 8-3 or 8-6 Decision type match where he gets the RT, but gives up a late TD. UofM 3-0 133 Man, oh man... I know Ragusin has that DAWG in him, but I don't like how he matches up with Bouzakis. I think Bouzakis has the horsepower to make it a long night for Ragusin and so long as he avoids the big move I think he takes it. I'll give Ragusin the opening takedown, but Bouzakis wins the TD battle 3-1 and comes out on top via Decision 11-5 with a takedown with about 30 seconds and a rideout to secure RT. Tied 3-3 141 Another matchup that I am particularly concerned for the UofM gent. I think Mendez picks him apart to a tune of a 13-2 or 16-3 Major. Add a point for RT if you like. tOSU 7-3 149 I think if D'Emilio can keep this close he might be able to chase him down in the 3rd. I don't think he'll do it, though. Gomez hits a bit 7 pointer in the first and goes in to the 2nd with a 10-1 lead and a cushy 45 second RT advantage. It ends up being too much of a sprint for D-Emilio and while get gets two stalling points in the third, he drops a 12-9 Decision to Gomez. tOSU 7-6 157 I think this ends up being a typical 4-1 Lewan match over Wilcox. No explanation needed. UofM 9-7 at the break. 165 Neither looked particularly good this last weekend. Amine looked lethargic and I have a feeling we see Mantanona here. I also think he comes out with a bang and beats Hepner. Wrestlestat agrees to a Decision tune of 11-9. Let's go with that. UofM 12-7 174 I think Griffith knows the game a little better at this point and wins a 4-2 Decision with an early counter takedown off Welsh. If It's Walker here, it'll be a similar score the other way. UofM 15-7 184 This would be a good match for Rogotzke to shed his shirt, if that is the plan. I don't think it is and I think we end up seeing Gavin Bell here (I believe the rumors are that Shumate and Hoffman are dinged up yeah?). If Bell is too heavy (if he weighed in over 186.8 in his 197lb match last weekend he won't be able to wrestle 184 this weekend), it could be Carter Chase we see here. I think Bullock gets a Major on Bell, though. Will be worse against Chase. 16-6 Major. UofM 19-7 197 I am hoping we see Rogers here again. I am not sure he beats Geog, but it is a toss-up. Wrestlestat calls it a one point match. Sure. 5-4 Decision. RT for Geog might happen, too. UofM 19-10 285 I think Davison is just too much for Feldman right now and ends up taking the Takedown battle comfortably 4-0. Add in riding time and it is 13-3/14-4 type match. Just a bad matchup right now for Feldman. UofM 23-10 Michigan wins.

  40. I read his book Giant Killer years ago and walked wondering why he isn’t more well known but it’s probably mostly due to a few things 1 being he went the nfl route , 2 him being a recluse for long periods (he literally would disappear for weeks on end , cost him his job with the Steelers) and 3 later on developed an alcohol and drug problem and had some trouble with the law. To his credit he did get clean but he just didn’t seem to want the spotlight I think all those factors are why he’s forgotten or an afterthought compared to other heavies and yes I believe he is the main reason why they stopped letting d2 and D3 compete , I know some big time coaches were at the forefront of that change as well i actually had a thread similar to this on the old board years ago
