  1. I saw some good and some bad for the Terps tonight. Brown- he was crisp and had some nice attacks in the first period... and then he just died. Seriously, I thought they were going to need a stretcher to haul him off the mat. My initial guess was weight issues, early season conditioning problems, or even some type of illness. Reading Clemson's comment in an above post backs up my initial thought. Well, I hope he gets it together soon- the only other 25 on the roster is little more than a warm body. Sandoval- I've always dug his "go for broke" style, and I'm excited to see if he can finally put the pieces together in what I think is his 6th year. No fireworks tonight, but a grinding win against a solid opponent (who is also a home run hitter). Miller- Dude looks huge at 41, and he obviously he spent some time in the weight room this summer. His opponent tonight wasn't a ringer, but Miller was aggressive and physical. Things began to click for him late last season, and it looks like he hasn't missed a beat (again though- this is against AU). Miller- Same as above. He added some muscle and looked solid. He faded down the back stretch a bit- something that haunted him a bit last year (i.e. Shane Van Ness match). North- Workmanlike win. North is a grinder, and I don't expect bombs from him, but I would have liked to see a bit more against an unheralded true freshman. Best- I like Best. He goes hard, and is surprisingly slick at times; unfortunately, "surprisingly slick" doesn't do much in the B10. But he looked fine tonight against a lower-tier opponent, and I'll take it. Solis- Solis tends to wrestle up or down to his opponents ability. This is OK against most B10 schools, where the Terps just need him to avoid bonus losses. It's not against teams like AU. Mielnik- Like last year, this weight is gonna hurt the Terps, and I just don't see either of the potential starters scoring many quality wins. Dude is game and physical, but just gets caught out of position too often. Smith- Looked like a top-10 wrestler. Nevills- Yeah, he's a heavyweight... but I really, really hoped to see him light up the board and look like the all-everything recruit he was several years ago. Instead he eked out a forgettable win against a .500 opponent. It's very early in the season, and AU is a subpar team, so I'm not trying to read too deeply into this match. That said, Brown's performance is obviously the biggest area of concern, followed by Nevills' listlessness. I also think North can turn it up a bit, and I'd like to see the 149 Miller stay sharp through all three periods. I thought 141 Miller looked fantastic, as did Smith, and I liked both Best's and Sandoval's efforts. Thanks for the match notes, Flying Cement. Go Terps!

  6. Oh, I know there’s a crowd of “print the money and throw caution to the wind” out there, but there are many more that are feeling the real effect of Bidenomics and are ready for a new approach. The average age of Ukrainian soldiers is 42. That’s the average age of our Sergeant Majors and Lieutenant Colonels. Russia’s economy is booming, stronger than before they invaded and the sanctions were imposed. How many more Ukrainians need to die? How much more money does Russia need? Understanding the corruption, how much bigger does the MIC slush fund need to get?

  8. This is what was said in the 1992 USA wrestling yearbook in the BB write up - "He enters the Olympic year after a rare non-medal performance at the 1991 World Championships, where he placed seventh. Closer Inspection shows that Baumgartner was a victim of bad breaks. In the 1st round he lost to the tough 1989 WC Ali Reza Soliemani of Iran. His other loss was to Turkey's Mahmut Demir , who poked Baumgartner in the eye to score the winning points in overtime." After that book was published prior to the 1992 Olympic trials BB went on to have some of his greatest years. He went Gold, Gold, Silver Gold, & Bronze over the next 5 years that included 2 Olympics.

  17. The judicial side has the right to bear arms as a means of self-preservation, and the stance behind this is well-explained (see Maine shooting comment). I agree that too much freedom with bearing arms has negative real-world consequences. I own several rifles and shotguns, and for now, I'm thinking of carrying one hidden when my youngest finishes high school. But... I'm all for sensible gun rules that make it so I don't feel like I need to carry a hidden gun for self-defense.

  18. The rebuttal to Uncle B. says, "Hey, you can't just say 'freedom all the way' without considering the consequences." The point is that advocating for personal freedom in one area might seem clear-cut, but it can have real-world consequences that we need to think about. Just like with guns, if we're too free, it can lead to problems. So, it's a reminder that these issues are often more complex than they seem, and we have to weigh personal freedom against potential downsides.

  19. 125: Jack Maida major decision over Braxton Brown. Maida dropped down from 133 where he was a NQ last year. 133: Max Leete, reportedly on redshirt, is apparently not, because he wrestled tonight up at 133 and took a close loss to King Sandoval of Maryland. Leete used his physical strength as an advantage last year at 125, but looked smaller than Sandoval.

  20. Now that we have established that the Big Board matters, lets take a look at who is optimizing (haha, we know who it is) the Big Board talent. From 2015 to 2022 (2023 class has not competed yet) the race for the most Big Board Top 20 wrestlers is pretty tight. PSU has the edge over Ohio State 18 to 15. But PSU has gotten 27 AA finishes from those 18 wrestlers (1.5 per) while Ohio State has gotten "only" 18 from 15 (1.2). But where things get really crazy is that 23 of PSU's 27 AA finishes were first, second, or third (85%), while Ohio State had 7 top threes among their 18 AA finishes (39%). Iowa gets trashed a lot for under-performing, but the real issue is they under-recruit. They got commitments from only 9 Big Board Top 20 wrestlers. So, even though those wrestlers averaged 2 AA finishes per, there just were not enough of them. One caveat. The school where the wrestler committed gets credit for all the wrestlers AA finishes regardless of where they were achieved. This hurts Iowa with a lot of recent transfer AAs (DeSanto, Eierman, Woods) and PSU (Dean, Kerkvliet). My logic is this is a measure of high school recruiting rather than retention. For a fuller picture, you would want to look at retention too (independent study opportunity?). It could be that PSU is just getting the best of the best leading to those best in class results. But, that is not completely the case. Ohio State has brought in slightly higher ranked wrestlers on average. ASU has also brought in higher ranked wrestlers on average, though significantly fewer of them.

  21. Flo has published, and maintain an archive online of, their Big Board since 2016. Their list contains the Top 100 PFP wrestlers for each HS graduating class. I was also able to piece together 66 of their top 100 for 2015 from their 2015 class ranking article. (The highest ranks I am missing in 2015 are 12 and 18). I did this because a lot of team debates start with debates about who had the best recruits coming in. The general form of the argument is "our coaches are better because they did more with less", or some variant. And those arguments are generally supported by cherry-picking from PFP rankings. Of course, that assumes that the PFP rankings are accurate. One possible explanation for the failure of a ranked wrestler to perform in college is that they were over-ranked (let's call that Willie's fault). Another is that they never progressed (coach's fault, the bum). And if a guy who never made the list does well it could be the fault of the list makers for over looking him. Or it could be a credit to great coaching once he hit the college room. Dealer's choice. So, I thought I would look at how well these Big Boards are connected to the actual results as a first step. But first some caveats. I had to pull data from a lot of different sources. And the data is a mess from every source. I spent time cleaning, but I am 100% certain that what I have still contains errors. Some are easier to find than others. For example, who knew that an apostrophe in a name had a direction? Well it does, and it matters when merging data. If you see something, say something. I will fix any errors as you, my collective editors, find them. Big Board Overall Grade Every year there are 80 All-Americans. Every year there are 100 (ish) wrestlers on the Big Board. And every year there are 4 (ish) classes competing. It would make sense that the vast majority of All-Americans come from these lists, especially higher up on these lists. Putting it all together you would expect that a given class would have 80 total All-Americans across their four (ish) years competing (80 slots multiplied by 4years divided by four classes). For the four HS graduating classes that have effectively used up their eligibility the hit rate is around 75% (60 of 80). It goes to show that development is not complete in HS. Guys can come "out of nowhere" to AA. The low number for 2015 is at least partly explained by the missing 34 wrestlers from my list. Cream Rises? It is fair to assume that these lists are more accurate at the top than the bottom. I am not sure how to quantify what I would expect, but certainly the pattern makes sense. The Top 10 do better than the next ten, and so forth down the list (mostly - keep reading, you can do it). The key to happiness is to fill your room with Top 20 guys. I know. Shocking insight. Again, the 2015 data is skewed to the top of the list because the missing data is farther down the list. The Outliers If you look closely at the table above you will notice that the 8th decile wins a disproportionately large number of the AA spots given their final Big Board rating (71 - 80). The distribution by final Big Board rating looks like this: What is going on with those #74 and #78 guys? This is the Money Ball stuff. Coaches, target #74 and #78. This is a foolproof path to a title. (Or maybe just a bit of small data weirdness? Nah, the money ball thing. Definitely the money ball thing.) For completeness: Trivia (and a tease) If you've come this far, maybe you're willing to come a little further. You remember the name of the town... What wrestler in the 2015, 2016, 2017, or 2018 HS class won a title with the lowest final Big Board ranking (#97)? Bonus trivia: The next lowest ranked from one of those classes was #74. Name that...haha, just testing your reading comprehension.

  33. During his preseason conversations with a handful of Big Ten coaches, Ryan Holmes made sure to ask about their thoughts on the new rules, particularly the three-point takedown. Not only do the coaches give their thoughts on the rules, but also if they have spoken with their team about the changes, and anything out of the ordinary with respect to the new rules. As you would expect, the answers vary greatly from coach to coach. For the full interview: Click Here

Getting grad transfers into Stanford isn't easy but I've heard that he actually had the academic profile for it. I'm curious to see how the people Koll took west do. If I recall, Cardenas, Duthie, Darrah and Yung LaJoie were all once ticketed for Ithaca. And maybe Provo? I thought some might leave for UNC but apparently not; I'd probably stay at Stanford too, especially after they brought in Ayres.
