Thanks for questioning me! I just went back and listened again. (Keep in mind I rewound this part a couple times last night, but I was also walking a Golden Retriever.) 22:03 Basch: When did you start deciding that you might want to enter the portal? Nagao: It was... uh...you know you ask(ed?) me two weeks ago and it wasn't even a thought... but you ask me a week ago ...that's when the thoughts and considerations... I considered opening the portal up. So, I now have a different interpretation thanks to your question. I'm guessing he is not implying that Basch contacted him initially and just saying that at some point the idea just popped into his head. So I apologize to anyone and everyone: Basch, Nagao, PSU, etc.4 points

I agree that Penn State is the stalking horse in modern NCAA wrestling. I think Iowa can make a strong claim that they would be better for developing Nagao, given their track record at the lower weights, whereas Penn State's "holes" tend to be down this way, but that's a relative term for Penn State, since their big hitters tend to be 165 and up; they still have had RBY and Nick Lee recently, and with regard to RTC talent, you're 100% right, nobody is within a mile of NLWC right now. It was super sweet of Nagao and Basch to run cover on the potential money portion of this, but I refuse to believe that God (if they exist) has an opinion on which school Nagao wrestles for. This is a Nagao decision, and that's fine! I don't begrudge him that, even if he end up at Penn State and I suddenly realize I have always hated him!2 points

Burwick has had a bit of a shitty run of it, but Nebraska seems to be doing a good job developing Wrestlers. Maybe just STAY and try and win the spot? He is a good Wrestler and he was a VERY good recruit. He transferred last year because a Wrestler who was marginally better(at BEST) transferred in. Now he'd be transferring again for Brice? I hope he has success, but sticking it out might be the best thing for him long term. If he were at Wisconsin(assuming he did transfer because they brought in LaMont) he'd likely have 2 years left as the starter.2 points

I understand why the natives are getting defensive about the Tulsa. It was fine. But if you ask us to compare it to other NCAA host cities, then you will get compared to Cleveland, Philly, StL, KC next year, etc. Overall it is not a knock on your city, but there are things that are not on par with other recent host cities. It doesn't mean there wasn't any good food or drink options, just not as many or convenient as others. The arena certainly needs a upgrade. If it goes back to Oklahoma, OKC in 2014 was better in my opinion than Tulsa.2 points

I feel like Nebraska is an underrated potential destination for Truax. Would allow Pinto to go down to 174. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

College wrestling is no longer a team competition. PSU has the title wrapped up for the next decade or more. It's participation trophies and hoping your team can get a individual champ for all the have nots.1 point

https://thehill.com/opinion/judiciary/3940490-i-was-screaming-before-you-interrupted-me-american-politics-has-become-amplified-rage/ This is quite long (too long to copy and paste here) but I suggest anyone with a desire to read something well written and well reasoned, this is it. It is by Jonathan Turley, who some of you may like or dislike. But I ask you to read what he has to say, and comment on if he seems reasonable here or completely off his looney head. I found this to be well reasoned and down the middle of the road. A good commentary that I think most would agree with on this topic. mspart1 point

They all lose money. I can't figure out the reasoning behind paying these folks so much money.1 point

Just so you all know, Bremerton is across Puget Sound from Seattle. The whole area west of Seattle is referred to as the peninsula. Bremerton is a naval shipyards type of area. Good for Thor to make it to D1. Not many from WA get that opportunity. And at a tough academic school as well. Best of luck to him. mspart1 point

I dunno. I'm certainly not a ranker. To my eye, I think Ferrari and Sealey are the best guys in the year, but that's all gut feeling.1 point

I think he's taken a couple of losses recently, so I'm not sure if he will, in fact, be the #1 overall recruit, but either way, very high level kid.1 point

Very big get. Another top 5 recruit to PSU. Very likely a #1 overall recruit as well.1 point

I'm a big wrestling supporter of PSU. I support both the Penn State Wrestling Club as well as the NLWC. I also support the NIL collective Success with Honor on a monthly basis with my funds directed toward wrestling. I'd like to do more, but right now I can't with how things are run. I can't direct money toward trying to entice Aaron Nagao or anyone else to attend Penn State. I'd love to direct funds to benefit specific athletes, but I can't. It gets spread amongst rostered wrestlers. I can however, purchase their collectibles, shirts, or autographed photos, but that can happen anywhere and it doesn't entice an athlete to sign. The NIL recruiting myth is a myth, except at just a very few universities that have very specific donors that perhaps might be on a morning television show, and have more liberal uses of the NIL application. Regarding Penn State and whether it is a "State School" or not, technically it is not. But it is under very firm influence of the state and state laws regarding the use of NIL. And regarding the fact that Cael's salary is not published isn't because PSU is not state run, it is because he is not in the top 25 salaries of the University. The 25th is the executive VP of health at $662,000. So he's under that. I'm guessing well under, but I'm sure he makes additional money from other sources besides the University. There have been some changes with Success with Honor's leadership recently. And they want to get more aggressive in trying to benefit PSU athletes. But it is clear 80% of those efforts are directed towards football. another 15% towards basketball. Those are the money makers. Wrestling is possibly a distant 3rd, but I'm not even sure about that.1 point

To add, look at Burwick's situation from an outside perspective. Didn't know his coach was recruiting over him, didn't enter the portal in time, lost a good chunk of the season (could have been all). It's a two-way street and therefore the student-athletes, if they prefer to choose wrestling over the name of their degree, should be as empowered as their coaches who may recruit over them, leave them, or be terminated prior to graduation.1 point

Chris Bono did the game with SDSU. He interviewed and got bumped and did it again with Wisconsin and the AD told him, no more raises. You either want to be here or you don’t. Good choice to move on1 point

This is a pretty logical outcome of NIL and the transfer portal. Student-athletes will enter the portal almost by default on an annual basis and that population will grow significantly, if for no other reason than to test the waters of free agency NIL. Doesn't mean every wrestler will enter the portal and even fewer will actually transfer. But pandora's box was opened and there appears to be no closing it.1 point

Nah, I'm just busting @nhs67's balls a bit from last year when he kept insisting Reyna was a threat to take a starting spot. Reyna is a tough kid, but never developed into a high level D1 wrestler.1 point

I was under the impression the restriction were at the direction of the previous AD, Sandy Barbour and that Kraft has loosened the NIL restrictions significantly. Maybe they don't have as much as anyone, but I was under the impression they had significant support there where Wrestling was concerned. I don't find it surprising the PSU Basketball may lag behind, but are we sure that's about restrictions? Also, Penn State isn't a "State School," as I understand it. It's received money from the State, but it's not controlled by the state and isn't required to adhere to State restrictions. This is something I'd just learned as saying Penn State isn't a State School seems silly on it's face, but I think they call it a "State-related school."1 point

You are not required to transfer by having your name in the portal, BUT you can't transfer unless you're in the portal. He could just be testing the waters or putting his name in the portal just in case. There's a lot of movement in the offseason these days.1 point

125 is Drake's spot I would think. He was a stud in his true freshman year and if he did not tear the pec we may have seen him AA. He had wins over Deaugustino, Schroeder, Surtin, Caleb Smith..1 point
