  1. Per Bud Hennebaul, who works on the site logistics and such at the NCAAs, the mats were mopped and cleaned before each day and between sessions as they have been for years. Combined with the UV treatments and no reported issues from the 2021 and 2022 championships, this seems like it is something a bit bigger and it seems like there’s a lot of assumptions being passed along as facts on social (shocker, I know).

  2. In 1966, a high school sophomore named Siddidi Finch, an adopted Iranian-born foster child from Oak Park, Illinois, whose parents died in a plane crash near Nepal, entered the Tbilisi tournament in Georgia and won... defeating 5-time world champ Ali Aliyev. He was denied the championship' however, when it was discovered he did not meet the minimum age requirement of 18 years. He never wrestled in high school folk style matches and only pursued freestyle. The majority of his training during his teen years occurred in Japan, where he was coached by the father of Yojiro Uetake Obata, and accompanied the elder Uetake on many trips to Tibet to learn yogic mastery of mind-body under the great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa. The elder Uetake when asked about the wrestling skills of the teenage Finch, stated: "Siddidi has taught my son, Yojiro, many skills." He did however, after graduating high school, walk on at Portland State university, where he twice defeated Rick Sanders in wrestle offs, but was denied a starting spot in the line up because of "academic performance"... The truth is, Finch rarely attended classes, other than to take exams, and in fact his GPA was a 4.0, but the University staff frowned on his absenses from the classroom. After the debacle at Portland State, Finch decided not to pursue a wrestling career, instead choosing to play the French horn or golf or something. What if.... Imagine how great he would have been. Below is the only known photo of Finch, sparring with Yojo, taken by his father.

  3. gimme Ed Ruth instead of Carter (at least for the moment) Alger over some dude from the 40's that Cinnaboner credited with an extra title. Also consider Prescott (2xer) at 125 for PSU but he was small.

  4. The only way to judge these type of cross generation debates is to compare results against their contemporaries. While a middling wrestler nowadays might destroy a champion wrestler of yesteryear, you have to take a nuanced look and think that the champion wrestler of the pst would evolve if placed in the present day.

  6. Bullied? He got beat by one move against Jenkins and loss 3 close matches to Dake in one year. You're rewriting history. We're using freshman year Nolf as a reference? Ok. Sorry to break it to you freshman year Zalesky had 5 losses & placed 5th. My take from the beginning was that PSU would win every bout after 149 unless Iowa wrestled sophomore year Mocco No they're not.

  8. I don't think so...You could run a very easy experiment testing UV vs bleach, and I guarantee you a 2 second UV Mop exposure wouldn't win. I think they trusted the $$$.

  9. I wrote a fairly long post on the previous forum about how stupid it is to replace bleach cleaning solutions with UV light exposure (this was when that guy got his eyes zapped-hope he is doing ok), but it really comes down to time of exposure that pathogens experience. If you had the entire mat zapped with high intensity UV light for an extended period of time, that would probably be equally as effective in killing any pathogens as bleach. That's not how these idiotic "UV Mops" work though, and there is no chance that the 2-second exposure times of the "UV Mop" is sufficient to disinfect a mat. When you clean a mat with bleach, which is the cleaning standard solution, you have the entire mat covered in bleach as it dries. In the process of the water evaporating, the bleach concentrates, which increases the effectiveness of the sanitation process. The NCAA should have known this-it was obvious to anybody who has any basic understanding of UV vs Bleach cleaning solutions. I think not only was this a mistake by the NCAA, it was an egregious action. They experimented with the lives of their athletes and in my opinion, likely acted negligently (how closely did they review the "studies" suggesting this UV mop works at all?). I hope everyone currently suffering ends up ok, but the NCAA should be liable financially (assuming they didn't mop the mats before the round started). This is not one of the accepted risks that go with participating in the sport.

  12. Arena - 5/10. Old building, bad food, not letting us know who's on what mat, tiny big-screens. Ease of beer access is the only reason the rating is as high as it is The town - 2/10. I'd give it a 1/10 if it wasn't for the lack of traffic Overall experience - 8/10 (because of the great wrestling, and my son going to his 1st NCAA's and having a blast)

  17. The sport has evolved under Sanderson. His guys would beat the old Iowa style. They already have beaten that style time and time again. This hypo does not make the Iowa style better.

  19. Maybe it is just me, but I try to make the best of everything. Add in that I have been to most of these towns fot competitions and for business purposes and that gives me that much of a leg up on you gents who have not. To me this was right up there with the 2016 MSG Snyder over Gwiazdowski and the 2017 St. Louis Nickal over Dean for my favorites since probably Sanderson winning his 4th. The 11/10 for wrestling more or less overshadows anything else. I didn't get too drunk and was able to attend with both my sons and son-in-law this year. Next time it is in Tulsa y'all need to hit me up because if you're complaining about the food then you aren't doing it right.

  20. Agree with the majority of points made by Fudge Tunnel & Bob Dole. I have attended every NCAA dating back to 2000 & Tulsa would be in my “Top 3 worst” for overall experience along with Auburn Hills & Des Moines. I really hope it doesn’t return to Tulsa.

  23. Maybe (gasp) he already had the infection before he set foot on a mat at NCAAs? Or, alternatively, he contracted his infection through skin to skin contact? The assumption that he contracted it from failed UV cleaning of the mat is kind of crazy. Also, to the crowd: UV doesn’t kill bacteria, viruses, etc. Anyone with a clue would know that. It works by damaging the DNA/RNA of the bacteria/virus and preventing it from reproducing. It’s regularly used in aquaculture to eliminate disease in fish production operations. I have a 36w UV sterilizer in my 140 gallon aquarium’s filter action system. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  25. I think most that are close to the situation, believe Angelo has a great chance to succeed. I wish he would go do his own thing honestly, that would be his best shot at succeeding with no BS drama. I will be 100% SHOCKED if Anthony does not F up within weeks at Iowa, or hell F up before he fully moves in. He is a walking time bomb, way too much history to prove he just cannot get his S together. Obviously, I hope I am wrong and they dude ends up being a model citizen.

  29. So, a 125lb guy who had a night before weigh-in would have the same physical ability as that same guy, who made 125 an hour before he had to wrestle? The science of exercise physiology would suggest you are very much wrong. A guy who weighs 135 and sweats off 10lbs to make 125 is going to perform completely differently on a night before weigh in (and can use IVs) vs that same guy doing the same thing with only an hour to rehydrate. It’s a pretty widely studied topic in physiology and it’s kind of crazy that you believe that. Guys from the 80s/90s would most likely have to go up two whole modern weights to not get their teeth kicked in. Here’s an excerpt from a paper written by a coach of some of the world’s best cyclists: “Fatigue toward the end of a prolonged sporting event may result as much from dehydration as from fuel substrate depletion. Exercise performance is impaired when an individual is dehydrated by as little as 2% of body weight. Losses in excess of 5% of body weight can decrease the capacity for work by about 30% (Armstrong et al. 1985; Craig and Cummings 1966; Maughan 1991; Sawka and Pandolf 1990).” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  32. I want to see the Russian athletes compete in the olympics-it is really a tarnished event if they don't..But they can't be allowed to compete given what is happening. It would not be fair to the Ukrainians. Hopefully the war ends soon (with Russia either deciding to bring their soldiers back home or getting defeated on the battlefield) and we can go back to seeing the best athletes in the world on the biggest stage.

  44. The Hokies are coming off of a fairly strong performance at NCAAs with a 9th place finish and 5 All Americans. There were some really bright spots and some disappointments as well. They return 4 or 5 All Americans, so next year should be another solid one. 125 - Ventresca - Really bright spot. Finished 7th as the 27 seed and beat some really good guys to get it done. Almost made it to the semis. I'm excited to see what he can do next year. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cooper Flynn hit the portal. 133 - Latona - Bright spot. He gave Vito his toughest test of the tournament and revenged his loss from ACCs against Orine. Wish he could have gotten into the 5/6 match but still a good performance. He should be right up there contending next year. 141 - Crook. About what I expected from the true freshman with 1 win on the backside. He could make a big jump next year. 149 - Henson - Really bright spot. True freshman with a 5th place finish. I was worried when he got upset and saw that he had Thomas in the blood round. But he handled that match and the next one vs Mauller as well. Sky is the limit for him. They have Mac Church coming around this weight as well so it will be interesting to see how 141/149 shake out in the next few years with red shirts. Either Henson or Church probably goes 157 after Andonian graduates. 157 - Andonian - Bright spot. Man I wish he would have gotten that pin in the semis. I could see he was in trouble during the review at the end of the 1st, shaking out his arms and legs. I think he had an adrenaline dump in that first period. He was limited this year with injuries but he usually doesn't have tank issues. I was disappointed with his first loss ever to Scott but glad he bounced back against Lewan. He should be right up there again next year. 165 - Brady - About what I expected with 1 win on the backside. Seems he is destined to be a solid starter but probably never an AA at this point. Hope he proves me wrong. 174 - Lewis - He's been hampered by injuries but I'm glad he was able to tough out that 4th place finish. Rideouts have been his achilles heel. He has another year if he chooses to use it but I don't know if he will or not. I hope he can get healthy and come back for another try. With Labs gone and Starocci maybe taking an olympic redshirt, I think he would be the favorite. If he chooses to move on I'm not sure who fills this spot. Maybe Shane Griffith would want to come wrestle for the Hokies at 174 (one can dream). 184 - Bolen - I was really disappointed for him that he didn't get another AA. He could just never seem to get back to his 2020 level where he was beating Hidlay and was ranked number 1 at the end of the season. Even so, he had a solid career and was a great Hokie. I'm hoping TJ Stewart drops from 197 to fill this spot next year. I think he's going to be really good. 197 - Smith - Disappointing 0-2 finish. He shows flashes of greatness and then not so great flashes. He should be a solid starter but maybe not an AA next year. Or do we see true freshman Sasso take over this spot? 285 - Catka - Disappointing 0-2 finish. He seems like he has so much potential but can't seem to put it together. 2 x NJ champ, Jimmy Mullen is coming in but the last I hear he was planning to play football as well. Not sure how that will work out. This year was filled with ups and down like they always are. The NC state dual win and finishing ahead of them at nationals was great. Getting stomped by Pitt and having a poor showing at ACCs was not so great. I'm excited for the future of the program. The mid and light weights seem to be really stepping up, but the upper part of the lineup (with the exception of Lewis) is falling a little short of expectations. As much as I like Jared Haught, maybe it's time for some new coaching blood there.

  45. The freestyle rules crowd are actively trying to kill folk style. By far the most popular domestic style. Attendance figures should be posted at events like NCAAs vs WTTs. It’s like an insurrection or something. Folk style was fine…. Leave the rules alone.
