  1. I feel the opposite about 197. I think it's possibly the deepest weight, alongside 165, or possibly even deeper. Last years champ is the 9 seed. With so many guys capable of winning it, whoever does will have gone through an absolute meat grinder. I don't think that sounds "easy" just because it's wide open.

  2. Before I do the random draw for order. A quick request to help speed things along... I know we all know "Lee" means Spencer at 125. However, I don't know all names and weights from memory. Please make picks as follows: 125 Lee or WC 125 Lee (for your WC selection)

  4. Many on these here boards will look at that table and say 285. Others might pick another weight and say - sure I could make that but it won't be "easy."

  11. There are 23 double digit seeds at 197. I'll take those odds.

  13. It seems there is a need for clarification about what "easiest" (or "hardest") weight means: 1. Easiest for any of the 33 seeded wrestlers to win (compared to the other 9 weights)? 2. Easiest to AA (top 8)? 3. Easiest because the weight isn't very deep (compared to the other 9 weights)— e.g., only has 2 or 3 elite guys in it? 4. Easiest path to win the weight for someone given their seeding? 125 might be the easiest for Spencer Lee win because he doesn't have many true threats. 165 might be the hardest for anyone who is not a top 4 seed. It has three returning champs. 197 seems wide open and relatively "easy" for top 12 or so guys to conceivably make the finals and win. 133 won't be easy unless you are RBY, Fix or Arujau. Same for 285: on paper it looks like Parris vs. Kerk. The only weights with no returning champs are: 141 and 285. Are they easier? One way to imagine the situation would be to ask if you had no idea what your given weight was, which weight would you pick to be thrown into and have the best chance to win it given what you know about the listed wrestlers and contenders? My own sense is that 197 and 157 are the most wide open. Then perhaps followed by 141.

  17. General information: Entry Fee: $20 paid to VakAttack via Venmo At the time of this posting, there are 13 registered (paid) participants. Still two spots open to complete the field of fifteen. Contact VakAttack immediately if you are interested in registering. Draft: Thursday, March 9, 2023 @ 9:30pm EST Link to Draft Board Once everyone is logged into the draft, I’ll randomly sort the participant list to determine draft order. Draft picks will be made in this thread, facilitated by VakAttack (i.e., he’ll prompt you to pick if you’re running slow.) I will log the pick on the Draft Board as it is made. Time to make your selection will be loosely policed at 2min. The selection process will take place in a reversing-snake pattern. i.e., the selection order works as follows: Round 1: 1 through 15 Round 2: 15 through 1 Note: #1 and #15 will make two consecutive picks as the order reverses itself round-to-round Each participant selects a wrestler for each weight class (125-285), plus one ‘Wild Card’. The ‘Wild Card’ can be selected any time during the draft process. The penalty for excessive lateness during a selection will result in the pick being skipped for that round, and that pick moved to the end of draft. (VakAttack’s discretion) All eleven selections (125-285, plus WC) count toward the participants summary score. Scoring will be downloaded from TrackWrestling (data provided using My Wrestlers) at the end of each round and updated/published on the same Google Sheet used for the Draft. Suggestions: Highly recommend that you open two browser windows. One to monitor this selection thread and make picks; the other to monitor the draft board (follow the selection order & see who is still available on the Draft Board). NOTE: You will need to refresh the thread frequently to keep up with selections being made and avoid missing your turn due to a time penalty. The Draft Board will update in real time. If you have any questions, reach out to VakAttack or lu_alum

  31. Spreading the wealth was a explicitly stated objective back when they abandoned prior year success and when to a formula. That first year, ACC and Pac-12 had huge jumps in qualifiers, iirc. I think as fans we are short-sighted if we start giving 5th placers in the Big10 better seeds than lesser conference champs. If you’re goal is to reduce D1 wrestling to 12-15 schools, then sure, but giving that App St or Cal Poly champ a “better” path to AA ultimately keeps those programs alive. As long as conference tournaments remain the qualifiers, it makes sense to treat those conferences with respect, even though we all know that some years/weights the Big10 has 7/8 guys all better than a fringe conference champ.

  33. On this and some other boards, I am seeing complaints about seeds of past champs, and other notables. It is almost as if people don't know that Griffith has multiple losses, Dean has multiple losses, and Brooks has a loss and really not a lot of matches. "They are trying to bury Sugar Shane in the brackets! It is a plan to give Carr a loss so that O'Toole can win. It is by design" "Who are the idiots who put Brooks in at #3?" "Dean will win. Penn State shows up at Nationals. Dumb to make him a low seed when you know PSUs record at NCAAs." I have seen variations off of all of these. My head hurts.

  37. Oh, Joy. We have actual seeds. No more messing around with ranks that are....I know, I know...NOT predictions (even though they are sometimes). HEADLINE: THE GAP IS CLOSING When last we gathered to perform this exercise immediately prior to the conference tournaments PSU was a solid 31 point favorite. Now with guys like Max Dean (9th) and Aaron Brooks (3rd) seeded below their rank, PSU is coming back to the field and stands as an 18 point favorite. Still a clear favorite, but well within the bounds of volatility such that you have to give Iowa at least a puncher's chance (maybe more). Add to that PSU is not the bonus machine of years past and we could have a real barn burner of a tournament.

  38. They're not the best seeds but they're ok. I wish they would do away with conference placement as a criteria. Or at least reduce its weight in the matrix. I do not understand why some goon who wrestles cans all year should be seeded higher than, let's say, a returning finalist who took a couple losses to the #1 guy (not referring to this year, just posing a hypothetical)

  39. I would not discount the planning and adjustments options of the PSU staff/wrestlers. Dean could not penetrate Allred's defense in their earlier match. And he could not stop Allred's shots. If Dean can find a way to finish/get past Allred's defense then he spends less time defending Allred's shots. I have no idea what that adjustment might be, but I know that PSU has a very good history here. I am not calling for a Dean win, but I do think that no one should be surprised if he did take the re-match.

  40. Kind of surprised there has been no mention of this here previously. https://gostanford.com/documents/2023/3/8/2023_DIMWRS_Brackets.pdf Looks like Shane Griffith and Matthew Olguin are going to be matched up against each other at least one more time in the 2nd round. Assuming they both win their 1st round matches.

  41. 197 is just a weight with a lot of parity. You have another quarter with Rocky Elam, Cam Caffey and Jacob Warner. Another quarter with Tanner Sloan, Gavin Hoffman and Jacob Cardenas. Tough weight class.

  42. LOL...this remind me of this whole act the Brands did. Terry was yelling at the ref doing the pointing and...whining. Tom Grabs him and tries to calm him down, they take a half step, Tom turns around starts pointing and yelling at the refs...Terry grabs him. Now Terry turns back and yells...goes on for like 4-5 times each person. It was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw. I actually missed the start and still saw about 4 times they turned and bitched at the refs. Peak-Brands.
