  2. Lost in all the fuss over the top seeds, Brendan Furman is seeded 9th at 285, considerably lower than his EIWA average ranking would have put him (6th), and puts him against the 1 seed in the quarters IF he gets past the 8th seed Knighton-Ward in the first round (Furman was also at a disadvantage due to only wrestling part of the season, as Fernandes was originally the starter) So yes, the system works against Cornell in some cases, and at 285 could cost them potential team points or even a qualifying slot. As for Ungar - there is no figuring him seeded over Glory, but past that, seeding the next 4 at 125 could pretty much be a random draw, and Ungar still has to get past quarters and semis to even face Glory. If seeding holds, he gets Sotelo of Harvard in the semis - no easy task, nor would be Babin from Columbia. I think the Big Red fans figure - sometimes the Seeding gods giveth, and sometimes they taketh; but the gods of War and Thunder are the ones that matter most.

  4. Probably someone who really opens up, and has more matches by dropping down to the back side early, and then winning third. I'll guess Patrick Kennedy

  5. Stieber going from 65-5 to 119-3 might be one of the most impressive streaks mentioned yet. 54 wins and negative 2 losses, who else had a run like that?

  7. Look forward to it. I expect this will reinforce all sides' views. The coaches will come across as intense and engaged and deeply committed to their athletes. The athletes will come across as dedicated, earnest, extraordinarily hard working fine young men grateful to be part of this great program. But this great senior class falls short of its potential, due to inordinately high instances of injuries and an inability to find a higher gear in the biggest matches. I expect that iowa fans will see noble efforts thwarted by bad luck (covid costing them the 2020 title and injuries out of anyone's control blowing up 2022). Non Iowa fans will see uncreative overtraining leading to injury and an inability to adapt and score needed takedowns against top competition.

  8. As a former official who started doing elementary school tournaments (that's how it works here) I say "amen" to this post. Some of the parents were just nuts. Was very happy when I "graduated" to doing junior high/middle school events.

  16. to be fair... the incident he is referencing took place while a friend's kid was wrestling him... he called me immediately after and was very confused by the whole thing... was not sure what set him off or how it ended up where it did... we both agreed it was the first time we had ever seen him act like that in all the years we had been around the family... always very intense and all of his kids wrestled a very specific style, but, neither of us had ever seen him lose his composure before... that and $8.99 will get you something that might have once resembled coffee...

  17. I loved soccer. When I was in high school I had a gym class with the captain of the soccer team, he was also a wrestler. He told me I was the biggest hack he ever played against. I guess I was doing it wrong.

  19. What i really enjoy is that if you click the Track link on front page it then opens your Flo app and when you select brackets it takes you back to Track. Which guess is better than the link above which doesn't take you anywhere useful you still have to go thru ~15 steps on Track to find them. But at least Flo owns Track so they can just link back & forth between the two platforms.

  30. You’re getting pedantic because instead of understanding there’s a middle ground between your La La lane of playing multiple sports in hs like it’s 1981…and having prepubescent kids overtrain… If you want to quibble over exact ages.. cool. Literally everyone else gets my point. Especially because you’re ignoring the most important point… the AWA coaches don’t run off or completely ignore the kids who may take a couple years to catch on… which is what most “elite” clubs do

  35. What's interesting about quite a few of these non-ranking tournaments recently is that: For the Klippan Womens International Tournament(seniors), Japan sent a team consisting of only 7 high school students and the won three weights(50, 57 and 62kg). They had one second place finisher(53), two 3rd place finishes(68 and 76) and one 5th place(65). For Dan Kolov, Japan only sent college students for all styles. Fujinami won the collegiate championships at 55kg with ease last year, but I'm sure this is just her testing herself against bigger opponents again. Only 3 more months to determine most of the spots for Japan's 2023 World team/Olympic team. Japan had a national team camp the other week and Fujinami was practicing with Susaki most of the time. You can see Fujinami pinned an opponent today using one of Susaki's signature moves-> Bent leg turk with crossface.

  38. OK, as far as Brignola having lesser chances facing Yianni than he might have facing Zopf - I would agree. But to generalize that into "hurting guys at smaller schools", well, I hardly consider Lehigh a "small school", at least in terms of wrestling stature (although some might argue that point in recent years). But also, Brignola lost to Zapf already (11-4, a point short of a major), so the degree of difference here goes from slim to almost none. More to the point - Brignola has a 62% winning percentage. There may be quite a few others more deserving of that at large qualifying slot. As for 125 - the bigger mystery there is not so much Unger getting the 1 seed (well, OK, that is BIG a mystery!), as much as how did Bailey, who is ranked higher, end up seeded behind 8. Max Leelee, American and 9. Micah Roes, Binghamton? Flip one or two of those places, and I think Bailey fans would be happier; but in this case, I think the seeding process used has actually helped the wrestlers from the smaller, lesser-known programs (which I suspect is in part the intent of the process used). Bailey is hurt here by his own lack of record - he's only listed at 7-9 (less than 50%) so how do you argue that he deserves a spot anyhow? And with 6 AQ slots at this weight available - if Bailey really deserves one of them, he's got plenty of opportunity to wrestle his way in (even though he did not earn an AQ slot for the conference). So while I get that the seeding IS way off in some instances, and I would certainly like to see some kind of appeal process to re-adjust by the "eye test" (whatever THAT might be ), on the whole I don't share the same level of outrage over lesser ranked or less prominent wrestlers/programs being hurt. On the other hand - it seems the guys who benefit most from this process are the guys who wrestled a full schedule, and especially a full conference schedule - so count me among the fans in favor of the process. STOP THE DUCK!

  39. There’s no inconsistency about not overdoing the little kiddy wrestling.. and not putting up with wannabe tuff guy parents.. which is exactly what he does… and then letting the more serious kids dial in when they’re in high school…

  40. This is the correct take. Strange that there is any pushback on this. If one wants to reliably cultivate a love for wrestling (or anything else for that matter), pre-pubescent children should not be subjected to the same type of training expected of elite cadets, juniors and beyond. Develop basic skills, develop a love for the sport, improve general strength, conditioning and coordination. Puberty is the great equalizer and if the child has the desire and innate ability to become competitive at the highest levels, skipping out on Tulsa Nationals in first grade isn't hindering this long-term objective. Askren is on the mark with his philosophy. It should be intuitive to any adult male regardless of whether you wrestled. Testosterone changes priorities. There will be exceptions but they are few and far between. Some of them reach the pinnacle of the sport. But fathers or coaches deluding themselves into thinking that their child is the exception to justify living vicariously through them is exactly what Askren is trying to nip in the bud. Good for him and good for Wisconsin wrestling.

  41. Telling the more serious kids what to do if they want to get to the next level in no way changes my point about him not doing the the bad stuff that is making youth wrestling detrimental to the growth of the sport. And the way you’re looking at it is.. not complete. Him coaching the best kids that way doesn’t change the fact he’s not running off kids early and he’s not doing wannabe tuff guy elementary coach crap.

  42. Kids Wrestling has gotten genuinely disturbing. These parents sit around the mats and scream like they're at dog fights. And you cannot get to the Mat without fighting your way through like it's a rave. I took my Nephew to a kids tournament, 800 kids in a gym that shouldn't have had more than 400. Took 10 hours to Wrestle 3 matches. You put the kids level of experience on there. He'd only wrestled maybe 5-6 tournaments. He'd been going to a club for parts of two years. I put him as a 2 out of 3. 1=Beginner, 2=some experience, 3=High level. That was new to me. He won the tournament, but he didn't look like a young Kolat or anything. Got taken down each time, reversals, regular kids Wrestling. He was confronted by this fat bald guy as we were waiting to leave(getting his bracket and medal). The guy was yelling at HIM for the group they put him in with. To be honest, I wasn't even sure if he beat his kid when they were Wrestling because I wasn't really keeping score. Well, he won. I guess 11-8 or something. Who gives a shit really? I've never seen a former Wrestler out there getting super worked up about a kids tournament, ESPECIALLY at that age. That's some toxic shit no matter what your definition of toxic is. You constantly see kids crying as the parents are in the corners screaming. The Mom's are just as bad as the Dad's. It's insane. I don't recall my Dad EVER saying anything to me before a match other than "be ready," and "make sure your shoes are tied." It kinda became a joke as he continued through College. But I don't think I could have taken it...having one of those Dad's who lived through you. From what I can tell, things have gotten exponentially worse in the past 10-15 years since I was in Youth tournaments. He got nervous and he got into the matches, but he never tried coaching me unless I asked and he was just...quiet in the tournament. I assume this is what people are talking about when they talk about toxic. Just how out of control some parents get, the screaming, the yelling, yelling at kids. The kids throwing fits when they lost and nothing. Parents need to just...be better. You wonder why you have fewer officials or why you see parents fighting with kids.

  43. After Davis was gone, part of me really wanted to see Askren get the head job. It would have been high risk/high reward. Regardless, it would have been a ride worth watching as an alum and fan. However, if I was an AD, I would never hire him. I give them credit for hiring him to be the RTC coach. That didn't work out, and gives us a good indication on how a head coaching gig would have ended up.
