Brands lost me when swept in freestyle, saying he was better than Fadzaev and Belaglazov. In folk, Lee will be in the all-time-greats conversation, probably top 5, but in freestyle he's yet to make a senior world team, let alone win 8 World/Olympic golds like those other 2.4 points

Being a college coach, a highschool coach, and a wrestler who was on the sports calendar twice, I can confidently say that your experience in sports has way more enjoyment when your fellow athletes go watch, and it builds so much synergy when individuals, and especially entire teams, go out and root on their fellow athletes. Some of the best memories I had off of the mat in college was going to random events like womens fast pitch or lacross meets and rooting like hell for randoms in our classes and getting to see their faces when literally, we are the only ones to show up their entire collegiate career that werent family.4 points

Love also that he implies riders are weak, turners are strong, and pinners are best4 points

I'll bite. He's a 6th year senior dominating against a weak weight class. The comment about comparing him to the greatest Russians is laughable. With the current crop of Russians I believe Sadulaev won the world championships at 17 and followed it up with an olympic gold at 18.3 points

Which makes it even cooler when the guy who wrestles in front of full houses and who the TV network changes the schedule to cover is the one showing up at your competition.3 points

Yes, this is the real issue. Does one seize the day (carpe diem) or plot and calculate for possible scenarios down the road? Is Haines a DT in the making (I'm doubtful he is at that level) who should be shirted or a freshman Mark Hall (who's shirt was removed as a first year) or maybe a Zain Retherford, who has the capacity to make a long run at NCAAs his first year Folks will certainly judge the decision by the consequences (as opposed to the intentions or the character of the coaches) but that is probably a simplistic and shallow view. We should acknowledge that all sorts of contingencies in this sport exist (as in life) and that hindsight is 20/20. Sanderson has a proven record (and a gift I think) about making intuitive decisions and applying practical wisdom (judgment) so we can second guess him all we want, but who else is in a better position to make the call? My sense: no one. And may the drama heighten our interest in this crazy sport. Maybe we even see Spencer Lee bump to 133 against RBY (doubtful) but it can only be a fan's delight. Hinduism has a curious notion that that the universe is involved in a kind of cosmic play (Lila), a drama of appearance and disappearance, a game of hide and seek. Friday should be fun, and waiting is part of this game. My guess: Haines is on the mat Friday. Sanderson loves these challenges. DT (his coach at M2 and my bet for the next coach at Penn State) will be rooting him on from stands. It's just one of many good battles that will occur in a heated rivalry. Yeah but I think he’s just caught up in the moment. He’s also on the record saying he was ready to find competition in other galaxies.2 points

Is this about the former FBI guy or about Mike? Yes, I think everyone can agree that this guy and anything he did should be investigated. Possibly not for his role with Trump though, we know that was all on the up and up. mspart2 points

Here's the answer: John Smith Baumgartner Rulon Gardner Kyle Snyder Spencer Lee (shared award) To me the big surprise is no Gable and no Cael. But Gable won his gold in the same year as Mark Spitz won seven. Cael won his gold in the year Paul Hamm became the only American man to win the all-around gold in gymnastics. I guess Cael might have-- should have?-- won in 2002 when the prize was taken by Sarah Hughes, who won Olympic gold in figure skating (2002 being an Olympic year winter Olympics). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_E._Sullivan_Award2 points

Yeah for sure. Related to that is him saying that he wrestles hard all match, every position, and says most don't. That's why he sometimes (particularly coming off injuries when he's not full strength) is called a "first period wrestler." He ain't conserving energy - he's getting after it.2 points

Lee. F 6-0. RBY. M 6-4 Woods. D 9-4 SVN. D 9-7 Cobe. D 12-7 Kennedy. D 15-7 Starocci. D 15-10 Brooks. M 15-14 Dean. M 15-18 Cass. D 18-18 Iowa wins when it doesn't count. I've been watching you guys do this for a couple years, couldn't miss out on giving it a try.2 points

I know a kid from The Shire, Pennsylvania. He won PIAA that year with a wizard in the finals. What was most fascinating is how he neutralized his opponent in the 1st period with an Elf's Bow & Arrow.2 points

I have been told that it is not a party until I bring my hips. But that has nothing to do with wrestling, well not that kind.1 point

I watched it live. Nashon did gas, but DeSanto seemed to downshift midway through the match and find a better gear for him. Reminds me a lot of Aaron Pico vs Jayson Ness at Olympic Trials.1 point

Ty Cobb would only hit about .270 against today's MLB pitching. But in his defense, he would be 137 years old.1 point

I'm surprised Gym Jordan didn't get in on the wrestling action on the floor of Congress ... though, on second thought, he apparently enjoys being a voyeur more. The most famous incident of aggression in Congress, of course, is the caning of Sumner in the Senate chamber (1856). If they had gone to a 16th vote last week for the Speaker, maybe we would have seen something like this happen to Matt Gaetz.1 point
