We need simple rules. I propose the 55 & 4 rule. As long as you aren't 55 years old and you havent already won 4 NCs then you can continue competing at any program that'll have you.3 points

Russians win when they wrestle smart, they gas when they try to wrestle with the Americans. It's impressive. Macch wins 10-6... gassed his opponent HARD, too. Three in a row for USA... gassed 'em all HARD.3 points

57 KG: Lilledahl lost by 1 late. 61 KG: Koontz Teched easily. 65 KG: Composito Teched 13-2, with resistance 70 KG: Andonian lost 13-0... gave up like seven three-pointers... can't force them on these Eastern Bloc gents. 74 KG: Blaze lost 8-4, but was like 8-2 late, scrapped the whole time. 79 KG: Hamiti won via Pinfellery. Was down 8-2 at one point, was up 12-8 when he won. 86 KG Coleman won 8-7 with a takedown in the final ten seconds. Hamiti and Coleman gassed them hard.3 points

I think if there is money in the budget for wrestlers too then the obvious choice is to get the coach first. It will make everything easier. If there isn't much money for wrestler acquisition on top of paying the coaching staff then a coach will only be able to do so much with a 4 year horizon. On the other hand the GOAT wrestler will provide immediate success which could be built upon. Cael Sanderson the wrestler was good for 27 team points at NCAAs. That would have been good enough for 16th this year at NCAAs. Over the past 30 or so years there have been a handful of examples of a really great wrestler going to a less storied program. Not to downplay the roll of the coaching staff at these institutions, but the exceptional wrestler made a huge impact in every situation. 1) Ben Askren to Missouri Not Cael Sanderson, but a bonus point machine in his own right that made 4 NCAA finals and won 1 hodge trophies. Before he arrived in Columbia coach Brian Smith had 1 AA in 4 seasons. By the time Askren graduated that number had grown to 14. Missouri had their first ever national champ and the best ever team finish at NCAAs (3rd). 2) Cary Kolat's transfer to Lock Haven The year before Kolat transferred Lock Haven had 0 AAs and hadn't had a national champ in 25+ years. The two seasons he was there they would have 3 AAs followed by 5 AAs, win the PSAC 2x, the EWL once, and achieve their best ever team finish at NCAAs (5th). 3) TJ Jaworsky transfer to UNC Maybe a tier below the last two Jaworsky still won 3 NCAA titles and Hodge at UNC. The year before Jawosrsky arrived UNC was 18th with 1 AA who was graduating. He was their only AA in 1993 when they finished 15th. The next two years they had 4AAs/season finishing 6th and 8th. Two of only 5 top 10 finishes in program history. Jaworsky accounted for 3 individual NCAA titles at a program that had only had 2 in their history before him. 4) Ricky Bonomo Bloomsburg He won three titles for Bloomsburg from 1985-1987. Aided by his brother Rocky this propelled Bloomsburg to finish 10th, 7th, and 5th at NCAAs. These are the only top 10 finishes in program history. 5) Greg Jones West Virginia Jones won individual titles in 2002, 2004, and 2005. Though he wasn't the bonus point machine like the others he rarely lost (128-4) and WV finished 13th, 17th, 16th and 18th at NCAAs with him in the lineup. Since he graduated WV wouldn't finish as high until the past two seasons (17th and 18th). 6) Jake Herbert Northwestern Before Jake Herbert placed 3rd in 2005, Northwestern had not had an AA in 5 years. With him in the lineup they would finished 14th, 13th, 4th, and 13th in the team standings. The 4th place finish tied their best ever. His Hodge Trophy was their first in program history and his two NCAA titles the first since 1990. More would follow with Tsirtsis and Fox winning in subsequent years. There are a few other examples of wrestlers of a similar level at a small program in the last 30 years. Haslerig at Pitt-Johnstown and Abas at Fresno state. I didn't look too deep into these two. Haselrig was at a D2 program and it was hard to find information on the Fresno program history as they subsequently dropped the program. The 6 in the list are probably the closest to Cael Sanderson the wrestler at a tier 2 D1 program. The impact of Cael Sanderson the wrestler could be even bigger. Looking at WV and UNC might give some insight into this question because they are two programs that recently got great coaches. WV has Tim Flynn at the helm who did an outstanding job at Edinboro. In his 6th year at WV they finally broke into the top 20 at NCAAs (17th). With Greg Jones in the lineup this was all but guaranteed and Flynn has not equaled the best finish of the Jones years (13th) or produced a national champion through 7 seasons. UNC now has Rob Koll as the head coach. He's only been there two years, but with two years of TJ Jaworksy UNC was a top 10 team with a national champion. It would be truly impressive in Koll is able to get them into the top 10 within 4 years. They have not been in the top 10 since Jaworsky graduated and great coaches at less storied programs (Koll/Cornell/Stanford/UNC, Zalesky/Oregon State, Brands/VT, Flynn/WVU, Ryan/Hofstra) take time to find success.3 points

You pay a few bucks to watch the event, and cancel the next day. I'd think of it more like a very cheap PPV. Man, people love complaining about having to spend a few bucks to watch a wrestling event.3 points

Really great showing from USA especially considering aside from Luke and Trent this was pretty much all third tier and beyond guys. I thought Luke,Dean and Blaze were the biggest standouts. Great win for Marcus too but I don't see him as a guy who ever threatens to make a team. Dean feels like he could be best suited to make an impact on the international level, but Levi seems like he may have his number stylistically in free.2 points

I can understand that. At the end of the day, RAF is not going to create any notable influx of new wrestling fans. Best case scenario it finds enough stability that it is another event for wrestling fans to enjoy. The most likely scenario is that it folds after a few events with little to no support from the wrestling community. I can tell you right now, I'm not going to be planning my Saturday nights around an exhibition wrestling league. Wrestling will never be a sport that attracts non-wrestling fans. It's too nuanced and hard to follow, even for very knowledgeable fans. During the Fargo finals JD Rader was probably wrong more often than right when predicting the outcomes of coaches challenges.2 points

Thank you for sharing this I for the longest time thought Asher was in the Mccort pipeline that's huge for FCA because Mccort is probably going to be top 25 caliber at every weight aside from 215.1 point

Think about it as paying 8 dollars to support wrestling. Unfortunately, it takes money to grow things. Without events turning a profit at some point or at least getting close a sustainable professional league will not exist.1 point

Yeah, I agree with this. The last thing casuals want to see is a close but banal technical match won on criteria or something. Fans crave Spectacle Attachment Stakes So I don't see why RAF (or any other pro freestyle league) feels like they need to adhere so closely to UWW's format. Why not experiment and come up with something different but close enough to International Freestyle but with broader appeal? Fans are willing to sit through 100+ minute stretches of soccer players frivolously swatting the ball around just to catch a goaaaaal. Or a BJJ guy sitting on his ass like an idiot all match, only to finally see someone get caught in a submission. Why not encourage the same for wrestling? If casuals want to see wrestlers get pinned or tossed on their head, why not make slams legal, allow wrestlers to celebrate or even trash talk during breakages, or offer cash bonuses for pins? Also give casuals a reason to attach themselves to wresters. Create teams or play up wrestlers' affiliation with a city, region, or club that fans can get behind. Pro teams gain instant traction because a lot of fans, even if they aren't real fans of the sport, want to rep their city. And as others have mentioned before, there needs to eventually be real skin in the game for competitors. Title belts, a point system leading to a title, something. It would also help if the stakes were global and not just American as some might assume from the league name. And I'm not a big fan of sports betting, but that's another way of growing interest. People will bet on anything these days. I know this is all easier said than done, and next month's matches are just the first event. Just that, big picture, there's no need to be so strictly guardrailed by UWW's rules and that leagues have some interesting levers they can pull grow interest1 point

Yeah I didn't pick him because MN is an AA factory of sorts. Here are MN finishes under Eggum with teams featuring Steveson in bold 7th, 17th, 8th, COVID, 7th, 11th, 15th, 22nd, 5th. Another heavyweight example might be Gwiz at NC State. He transferred with his coach so it is a little difficult to isolate the two. Any given year there are probably 20 teams that are one Cael Sandreson/Gable Steveson/Ben Askren/Cary Kolat away from being a top ten team, because just getting one of them is a huge piece. In all the examples of great coach to lesser program (Koll/Cornell/Stanford/UNC, Zalesky/Oregon State, Brands/VT, Flynn/WVU, Ryan/Hofstra) none had a top 10 team within 5 years though some left after only 2 years. It seems likely that Brands would have had a top 10 team within 5 years at VT if he had stayed. Slaton, LeClere, Metcalf, and Borschel had near 10th place points their first year wrestling for Iowa. The question today would be if Brands could have landed those guys if Zalesky had access to Bob Nicolls $$ to make NIL deals.1 point

Does this spell the end of the WNBA? If they sit out, why would owners who lose money want to lose more money with higher salaries? mspart1 point

didn’t know this was their beef (below)… other than wanting more $. They’re pre negotiating. I know they get a lot of $$$ from the nba but if they really walk why wouldn’t a smart business owner take the net loss and run…. They’re in for what a 100 million dollar loss by now? “They’ve been cashing checks off our backs for years. It’s time that respect hits the bank account.” — Napheesa Collier The current CBA expires in October, and tensions are escalating fast. Players have openly hinted that they’re prepared to sit out the 2025 season if a fair deal isn’t struck. The message from the league’s brightest stars? They’re done being underpaid — and this time, they’re not bluffing.1 point

Let's pay WNBA players the same money as any man with those same skills. In other words, they would pay to play in a Tuesday night church league while working a real job. The world cup soccer chicks complained about their paychecks also. They sued because they were paid according to a different formula from the men's team. Forgetting, conveniently, that they had the option to be paid by the exact same formula the men were paid and voted against it! I think they were suing over the fact that no man interceded and made them vote in their best interest rather than with their feelings. Interestingly, both the men's team and the women's team would have been better compensated if they had taken the others' pay scheme. Of course, none of this has anything to do with absolute talent and skill levels. We all know 15 year old boys will beat the women's national soccer team. So paying the ladies the same that we pay 15 year olds to play soccer seems to be just mean and curmudgeonly.1 point

WNBA players owe WNBA money for losing money every year. They might want to start by not beating up the star player of the WNBA every night she plays. Yes, they deserve more money when they start making a profit. That's how this works. mspart1 point
