Kid, With all due respect, you've got some seriously bad takes here, all throughout this thread. You're entitled to your opinions, but the factual understandings on which they're based need some work. Let's take a stab at it, shall we? 1. Boys wrestling isn't dying on the high school level. Participation in high school wrestling is increasing -- including among boys. This article from last year (here) shows an increase of 32,443 boys compared to the prior year, for a total of 291,874. Fold in the gains from the prior year, and there was a 25% gain compared to 2021-22, which is remarkable. This is without mentioning the consistent gains of the girls, to 64,257, although my personal guess is they're mutually reinforcing. The 291K figure is still an overall decrease from the 70s and 80s, including the all-time boys high of 356,131 in 1976 (see article here), but if the current growth rate continues, we'll be back there in a couple years. (We're already there if you add the boys and girls numbers from 2023, but we're talking boys now.) There's pockets where wrestling is struggling for demographic reasons (e.g. in rural areas, where schools have declining enrollment), but it's growing overall. 2. Nor is it dying on the D1 level. It's a concern I share, no doubt, and it's taken a beating over the past half-century, going from 155 D1 men's programs in 1975 to only 79 at the start of this year. But look at the number closer, and you'll see that we've flatlined since around 2011, with a slight net gain in programs since then. A Flo article (here) demonstrates this well, both in listing of actual programs added and dropped over the years, and in an accompanying graph. Yes, losing CSU blows, but every sport loses programs here and there, and not every lost program means "wrestling is dying." 3. Earlier you refer to people "blaming" Title IX, as though it was a scapegoat. While there's a grain of truth to that, there's no question Title IX had a dramatic impact -- or at least the DOE/OCR's three-prong proportionality-driven interpretation did. It isn't rocket science: when you demand equality from colleges whose teams skew male, and don't take disparities in interest into account, you have to either add women or cut men -- and adding costs money. True, those who put all the blame on Title IX ignore the decline in high school participation at the time (see above), and the cuts weren't helped by ADs who overspend on football. But numerous programs were dropped expressly or in part for Title IX reasons, often to stave off pending or threatened lawsuits. On the plus side, it's helped open the door to women's wrestling. Overall this issue has been heavily politicized, and as such most literature on the topic is slanted, so if you have an overly strident view in one direction or the other, you should probably rethink it. Some good reading here, here, here, here, here and here. 4. Can we relax with the "warrior mindset" stuff, and how "soft" we are? Yeah, we're not living in caves anymore using our bare hands to kill our meal each night like "alpha males," but as you can see above, wrestling is doing fine and actually is in the midst of a rebound. Maybe skip the next one or two or twenty Andrew Tate podcasts? Come on man.5 points

Okay I thought OP may have been asking for how he thought it would shake out this year but wasn’t sure. I like this version too though. To add some more wrestlers: Stevo Poulin and Anthony Noto - transferred after redshirting, both at NC State Matt Ramos - did not qualify at prior school Anthony Echemendia - did not qualify at prior school Quinn Kinner - did not qualify at first school Dan Fongaro - did not qualify at first school Reece Heller - did not qualify at first school (although his brother Holden did) Cleveland Benton - did not qualify at first school (and has since transferred again) Seth Nevills - did not qualify at first school How are you counting multiple time transfers? Does the first school get “points out” for all years after and the second school gets points out for only the years after they leave that school? Tying in both that and your question, is Brody Teske being counted as points out for Penn State since he did not qualify there? Wyatt Henson would be another that redshirted at one school then transferred to 2 more3 points

You commit a crime entering the country illegally. You commit a crime seeking asylum under false pretenses. Hopping the border does not make you a criminal? Ask most countries in the world and see what you get in response. Every heard of the visa program. Most countries eventually require that of foreigners if they plan to stay. Failure to do so is an offense against the criminal code of that country. This really isn't that hard to understand. mspart3 points

What is the prison term for unlawfully trespassing? I'll help you out, it is one year. Most of these had more than that as the DOJ wanted to make examples of everyone. But by your own admission, they did not do anything worth more than a year, yet they had sentences that went beyond that. And can you call it trespassing when the doors are open, police are escorting and holding doors open for them? The videos are conclusive of what of the doors being opened and held open and police escorting. They even escorted the shaman around so what to make of that. That's why there was such resistance to letting those videos out. The shaman is clearly a threat has he walks the halls with police in tow. The fact of the matter is the majority of those convicted or who plead guilty were over sentenced. mspart3 points

You don’t have to like it, but I don’t know why any wrestling fan wouldn’t at least watch it to support the fact that it was made. It’s not like there are a lot of wrestling movies being made, and especially not with actors that people have actually heard of. And there were of course a lot of wrestling people involved/in the movie, Johnni DiJulius, Shane Sparks, Angel Rivera among others. Robles himself (and his mom) was heavily involved with the movie. He was in the movie in some of the wrestling scenes, he trained the lead actor, and has been involved with the promotion. If he was okay with the changes then we probably should be too.3 points

From an email from the Cornell AD: other big news unfolded earlier this week when the Ivy League announced that all eight schools will be opting out of the impending NCAA House Settlement. The decision to "not opt in" means the Ivy League schools: Will not change long standing rules, including those that prohibit any form of compensation for participation in any intercollegiate athletics program ("Pay for play"). Will continue to not provide student-athletes with revenue sharing allocations, athletics scholarships, or direct NIL payments; and Will not be subject to the roster limits established by the settlement for NCAA championship sports.2 points

Just watched Unstoppable, and although entertaining, I wonder why it was so historically inaccurate. Couple things included in the movie that didn’t really happen or were inaccurate… Arizona State losing their wrestling program in Robles’ sophomore year. Matt McD (as a sophomore) beating Robles (in his junior year) in the NCAA finals for McD’s 2nd straight NCAA title. Movie also said McD was undefeated in his collegiate career going into the NCAA finals when he beat Robles I imagine the movie fictionized the above for more dramatic effect…but it’s weird that it’s about Robles’ career at ASU but is far from accurate. Kind of ruined it for me. His actual career and achievements are phenomenal enough, I don’t see the point of making a movie that isn’t accurate.2 points

Good thing we didn't bet! I think Young was majorly screwed by the ref, but it counts the same regardless. UNI is a quality program. I definitely root for them against any anyone else2 points

Correct Parco and McGee for three years each. And Ryan Millhof for one year (only qualified for the tournament one year of three years at ASU). Cory Crooks left ASU for Oregon State. Bubba Jenkins was too early to make the list.2 points

The question was which team benefited most from the transfer portal. Kerk used the transfer portal. PSU benefited. This seems like it would be on topic to me.2 points

Because high school participation doesn't translate to interest in college wrestling. How many of the guys that you wrestled with in high school do you think have watched (let alone attended) a college meet in the last few years? How many of them do you think have watched a college football game?2 points

I also felt a bit annoyed by some of what I felt were unnecessary inaccuracies. Why act like he was a finalist the year before? He wasn't. And it didn't add much to the story for me. But after reading the other posts sharing how common this is in movies combined with my own lack of cinematic expertise... I'll step back from the soapbox. It was awesome they could honor an incredible underdog college wrestling story with such a star studded cast.2 points

1. Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, why was this necessary given the 14th amendment. 2. Personally I think EOs should not be used except in rare occasions, or only in those things that are executive in nature and not legislative. For instance an EO stopping enforcement of immigration law should be immediately suspect and not followed on legislative grounds. An EO turning that around would be a proper use of an EO. 3. I agree that this is what makes the President into would be dictator. 4. Since there is no line item veto, an EO should not be used to say I'll enforce this part but not that part. 5. An EO eliminating student debt is not legal. And it should be apparent. That is the legislature's prerogative. Why it has the force of law I do not understand. How did EOs that make new law get to the legal status of actual new law? That needs to be reversed. mspart1 point

You did not address my question. It would seem you only hold this position on laws to restrict constitutional rights to the second amendment. That is inconsistent to say the least. mspart1 point

2025 Yarygin Wrestling Tournament Brackets & Results - FloWrestling courtesy of @Jon_Kozak quick link to brackets and results RBY looked good and seemed to be far more offensive in my eyes. He blew a lead in his quarterfinal match and got tripped up by the refs foot it seems with about 4 seconds left to lose whilst backing up. I think he could have won his semifinal match and potentially even the final. Pavlov took second at russian nationals and is the finalist on the top side but Lilledahl has beaten him the last two years at junior worlds. Tough way to go out for RBY but I think a lot of good thinks to take away from this. uguev vs mehktikanov: I believe is a russian nationals finals rematch, both guys appear to be the class of the weight. I was interesting to see how uguev looked here, the general consensus after worlds seemed to be he was no longer at the height of his powers. I'm not sure if that's because Ono and Vito beat him quite soundly but judging how he's looked here I'd say he's at least 85-90% of what he was at his best. 70kg: Watch Baev Etermirov in the second round insane match. Baev has a really odd setup for a snatch single its almost like a miss direction snatch single its very cool. Baev vs Kapynov final, I am not familiar with Kapynov but he looked ouststanding against Shiraev who is super super dangerous. Baev to me has always been a top 3 guy when hes at 70kg so he would be my pick but should be a good one.1 point

The assertation that their room would be worse than "many" high school rooms is absolutely, sorry to say, idiotic. Less than 1% of high school wrestlers go D1.. how many high schools boast a room where the majority of athletes are in the top 1%? You could say that there are a handful of high school rooms that may be better than MSU, but out of the thousands upon thousands of high school programs, there are a handful of wrestling factories that would have a better room. "Many" is obviously subjective, but I would say it's much more fair to say that their are a few elite high school programs with better quality in the room. Relatively speaking, most "bad" D1 starters are state champion caliber wrestlers in most states, and more often than not, better. If everyone on a high school team is an average state champion, they still aren't going to compete with MSU. People forget that being a D1 NQ still puts an athlete in the top .001% of all high school wrestlers. They may be a bad starter in D1, but they're still going to wreck an average high school state champion.1 point
