If they land Taylor it will be the best coaching hire since Sanderson left Iowa State, for State College imo. It's a game changer.4 points

I did not expect to like this idea so much, but it would be undeniably excellent for the sport. David would bring so much of that room’s knowledge, and would put his own spin on it, potentially also disseminating some of that on down the line to the broader wrestling community, this would improve wrestling across the board below college as well.3 points

For David Taylor? Yes. I'm totally on board with this outright betrayal. Edit: But if OSU doesn't seal the deal with Taylor, then the admin has irreparably undermined Scott.3 points

The state of Oklahoma doesn't have two nickels to rub together, the halfwits running the state have completely gutted the tax base. They are talking about making school only 4 days a week in the future as a money saving plan, in addition to other things. I think OU does have the richest alumnus that I'm aware of, Roger Frizzell. He was a 4 time AA back in the day, battling guys like Kenny Monday and Nate Carr. I read somewhere that he's got a few hundred million (he was an airline CEO for a long time). I don't know if he'd be interested in buying OU a competent wrestling team.2 points

He is still younger then everyone on the Olympic team except brooks , he can step back into training tomorrow and by next year the spot is his2 points

I look forward to hearing how he got here. By here I mean someone who doesn't matter. From the first big NIL/employment contract, to a slow slide toward irrelevance, to a series of flirtations with returning to the place he has relevance, to a weird backtrack, to a fast slide to finally arrive at irrelevance just in time to miss out by mere weeks a chance to matter again. I would love to here his version of conversations had with WWE bosses and the decisions made. Knowing what both parties know now I have to believe neither would have chosen that contract followed by a waste of so many prime years. No third NCAA title, no World title, no second Olympic title, no WWE success either. At what price?2 points

Graduates have to be in the portal by the same date as everyone else now. Changed very recently. Schools were required to complete the entry within 48 hours, so it shouldn't take too long for everyone to be known this year.2 points

The Dake Taylor combo does seem plausible for awhile. But, it's hard to imagine Dake staying on DT's staff as an assistant indefinitely. Dake has enough star power to Head a program himself.2 points

Unfortunately for Iowa, the youngest is still planning to go to Iowa and his family appears to be moving there with him. To include AJ and Fredo. So, like a shadow, he's always going to be there. AJ will jump at any opportunity to be relevant, in anything. If Beth Goetz moves to another school to be their AD, gets fired, or leaves for any other reason, Tom Brands will do his best to bring AJ in. He's desperate. He can't coach his way to beating Penn State, and there are only so many athletes they can buy, so this is the next best thing.2 points

The current AD is a huge supporter of PSU wrestling. Sandy Barbour was as well, I saw her at almost every home match and several away matches including B10's and Nats. I never heard a negative word about Sandy in relation to wrestling. People manufacture drama where there is none. With the exception of Kennedy the staff has been relatively unchanged in a decade. There must be a bit of sunshine since people go there and stay.1 point

As alluded to above, someone like JRob is hard to get into the conversation, but i don't think its because of his coaching quality. Taylor's value as a coach is exaggerated by the aspects of college wrestling that aren't making the sport better (not his fault or a reflection on him). The importance of recruiting and NIL money make having a huge name as a head coach very important. For instance, would you rather have Taylor or Cunningham? As a coaches coach, Cunningham is the obvious choice, as someone who needs to sit down across some big wig potentially get millions of dollars out of them, or someone who can show up in your living room and get whatever they want, its taylor.1 point

The oil companies own tons of land in Oklahoma and, of course, pay no property taxes at all. They completely destroy the land they pump, by the way, and leave toxic areas in their wake, sometimes complete with holes thousands of feet deep that they sometimes throw a plywood sheet over after they pump the location dry. They also pay far lower income taxes than all the surrounding states, the politicians in Oklahoma City (all beneficiaries of huge oil company "campaign contributions") justifying charging about half as much in taxes as Texas by saying they were "protecting jobs". Oklahoma should be charging at least as much for their oil as the surrounding states, but the politicians are all bought off.1 point

I don’t think Mark Cody is a great example because he had a very successful coaching stint at American. But I get your point. Taylor could absolutely be a big bust as a coach. I think it’s pretty unlikely though and worth the risk. Winners win. The top 3 coaches I’ve seen in my lifetime are Cael, Gable, and Smith. The one thing they have in common is that they were all the biggest star wrestler of their time, and they all became head coaches early on.1 point

Exactly… if someone tried to buy Cael away, I guarantee Penn state would match any amount to keep him1 point

You have to wonder how that will impact other guys on the roster who have international aspirations... i can think of a couple guys would get good NIL paydays and good freestyle training situations. I doubt Schultz ends up at Michigan with Coon training there. Minnesota? Oklahoma State?1 point

I think it is a sign of OSU diminished stature in the wrestling world that they went to State College to pursue Taylor and/or Cunningham. The OSU of twenty or so years ago would have taken a swing at Sanderson.1 point

This. Sometimes people try stuff and it isn't the right fit for them. That's one way you learn and grow.1 point

That was in parentheses because it remains to be seen how DT will do developing college kids as a head coach. Those two were AA caliber out of HS, but no doubt they also benefited from being in the PSU room. DT will pull some big recruits early on, but he'll have to get them to the top of the podium quickly, or his name power will fade. It's worth it for OSU either way, as the risk is not any higher than with Scott, but the potential upside is much higher.1 point

Hoping he has pocketed at least $500k he can invest. Don’t touch. With real rate of return of 5% he can have almost $3M in today’s dollars in 35 yrs or perhaps $6M+ in nominal terms. Good nest egg for retirement. And that is before he adds to it from whatever career he picks.1 point

Spencer and Zain are going to make mincemeat of whoever they face. My prediction. Feel very confident. Rest of the field is worried about Zain, the 2023 WORLD CHAMPION at 70kg.. And they should be worried about Spencer.1 point
-
I don't know the field at 65, but at 57 kg I feel that Spencer is a lock as long as he doesn't have Aman right off the scale. Even then, I'd give him a 90% chance to win the true bronze match. What happened to Zou Wanhao of China? They are sending another guy who has awful international results. I think Lee beats Zou, but if he were there, the percentage would drop somewhat. Other contenders are Sarlak of Iran, Horst Lehr is strong for Germany, and so is Zanabazar Zandanbud of Mongolia, but I don't think any of those guys can avoid Lee's leg attacks and guts/laces. Dark horses are Vladimir Egorov, a Russian wrestling for Macedonia. Dude has wrestled as high as 65 kg two years ago. Recent Euro Champ at 57 kg. Muhammet Karavuş of Turkiye is a recent Euro and Junior Silver. Looks pretty big. The cut will be key for all these tiny fatties.1 point

Where will Amine end up? It seems odd that he's leaving Michigan. Grad school seems like a stretch as Michigan has great grad programs. Perhaps a change of scenery.1 point

I Google the #. How on earth do you not know you’re about to be fired? He had one televised match in 3 years right? He absolutely does not deserve a wrestle off.1 point

This morning, multiple sources have confirmed that the WWE has released 2020(1) Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson. Shortly after winning his second NCAA title, in 2022, Steveson turned his attention to the professional wrestling/sports entertainment industry and signed with the WWE. In 2023, Steveson was granted permission to wrestle in the US Open, which he won, and then Final X. At Final X, Steveson defeated Mason Parris, 5-2 and 5-0 in consecutive matches to secure a spot on the World team. Shortly before the World Championships, Steveson had to withdraw from the team to focus on business with the WWE. Parris took his place and came home from Belgrade, Serbia with a World bronze medal. During his time at WWE, Steveson was promoted on several marquee pay-per-view events and “drafted” to Raw; however, he did not have much mat time in front of the camera. No specific reason was given for Steveson’s release; however, longtime pro wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer suggested that an “inability to connect with the audience” may be a factor. While the timing of Steveson’s release is unfortunate; two weeks after the Olympic Trials, he wasn’t the only one let go by the WWE. At least 11 other members of WWE’s developmental NXT brand were released on Friday, as well. One of them is a 2022 NCAA DII national champion Darrell Mason of Minnesota State. Steveson should have plenty of options available in the future. If he wants to continue pursuing a career in pro wrestling, he could hone his craft in a smaller promotion. Steveson has trained in the past with NCAA/WWE/UFC star Brock Lesnar and has hinted at a future in mixed martial arts. Of course, with the Final X wins over the eventual world bronze medalist in 2023, Steveson still is capable of beating anyone in the world if focused on freestyle wrestling.1 point

There’s got to be an aspect of “mark to market” with the portal at this point, just a part of negotiating NIL rates after a good season.1 point

For someone who knows nothing about wrestling, you are pretty secure in your wrestling opinion ha ha!! We thought the same with Zain last time and he got beat and didn't make it. I'm not saying he will do that again, but I don't think anything is guaranteed. But I really want to think it is. I anticipate that they will win the tourney at their weights. But you just never know. Again, best of luck to both of them. mspart1 point

The book "The Trials" by James Moffatt quotes Mike Farlina who beat Weaver for the FS spot. He also won the GR spot and was a senior in HS at the time. He said he lost to Bill Rosado (who was the favorite) by a 9-8 score in the 1st round. Weaver pinned Rosado in like 20 seconds. He wrestled Weaver in the final round and won 13-7 to take the spot. After the trials he went back to finish his senior year at York HS in Elmhurst Ill. He only won his State once as a senior in 1976. The book is great for any wrestling fan - full of info about all the Olympic trials from 1960 to 19881 point

Wikipedia- Weaver began competing in freestyle wrestling while still in high school. He caused a sensation at the 1976 Olympic trials when he pinned his first eight opponents. He eventually ended up as the alternate on the Olympic team.1 point

Eierman would’ve finished in as a finalist regardless of the school, Mizzou or Iowa. The weight had cleared out and him and Lee were clearly the top guys.1 point

Right with you. I still haven't found my answer about why everyone seems to pile on this poor guy (see what I did there?). He seems like a nice family man who just really loves discussing wrestling. I don't watch the solo videos because I would rather wait for the podcast to get a few different opinions, but his job is to create wrestling content for his company. Those videos are a quick and easy way to do it and get engagement. The wrestling community has a tendency to eat their own and we are far too small of a sport to put down anyone who in good faith is trying to grow it.1 point
