Man, what a fall. Hamiti used to live in Madison. Then we thought he was going to be in Ann Arbor and fat and happy at 174. Now he's living in Stillwater and he's Daton Fix's replacement at 133.5 points

Everyone blames the Northwestern drop off on transfer portal stuff but I’ve been yelling from the rooftops for years now it has more to do with the coaching staff getting gutted over Covid vax situation. They lost 2 top level coaches and no disrespect to futrell and Justin Oliver but they haven’t come close to replacing them, Kennedy is one of the main coaches for penn state now and Cael gives him props and compliments in interviews all the time on the work he does . Illinois had a ton of injuries and redshirts to the top returning guys , Byrd who is multiple time AA, Luffman who could have had some success in a thinned out heavyweight group, he has wins over the Campbell AA and quite a few other AAs probably a R12 guy at worst and the Brunagal brothers so a lot of points sitting on the bench last season5 points

As the OP, I decided what this topic was about, that is personal accountability. Perhaps you could create a tax wingers topic.4 points

I recently finished Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg. The most interesting part to me was about how successful couples don't argue less or about different things than unsuccessful couples. Rather they don't use arguments to control each other. People react very negatively when someone takes away their agency, but don't always realize when they're ceding it. If something is the way it has always been, you may not realize what about a situation actually remains within your control. A quote I like, "How have I been complicit in creating the conditions I say I don’t want?” I weigh more than I say I want, but then I also snack. I can blame everyone from the admin assistant at the office who keeps a candy jar stocked to Ray Kroc, but ultimately I'm the one with the most agency in this situation.3 points

Very few like or appreciate Iowa style wrestling anymore. It's unattractive in the 2000s. It's based on some fiction of a tough macho, self-sacrificing man. Marlboro Man. It's low scoring. It's not fan friendly. It is rooted in the Brands' experience at very low weights and doesn't work well in an era scrambling and funk. It doesn't appeal to recruits. It is not enjoyable to watch. The Brands don't get this and they think being stubborn is being resolute and strong. These spark plugs and fire hydrant coaches aren't going to change. And they will only fall behind further while the peanut-crunching crowd gets louder .... in its impatience and disapproval. But the midwest also doesn't like change either and doesn't know what to do. It's more earth than water or fire. It loves authoritarians not innovators.3 points

I have to wonder if there are two things at play here: 1. Tom Brands' expectations.. 2. Beth Goetz's (Iowa Director of Athletics) expectations On the one hand, this has to feel like another miserable failure to Tom Brands. Only one guy in the finals, only four All-Americans, finishing "a lowly" fifth in the team standings, one spot/1.5 points behind Iowa State, and 105.5 points out of first... One the other hand, Beth Goetz may see it as a top five team finish (one finals win away from being tied for third), nine National Qualifiers, a National finalist (on ESPN) and four All-Americans. She may also see/understand that Brands' teams have never finished in less than eighth place (2007, his first season as head coach was when they finished there), and in 18 seasons the Hawkeyes have brought the University 14 team trophies, including winning four team titles. Other than Sanderson, there isn't a single other coach in NCAA Division I wrestling with that consistency in the last two decades. All the while, Brands' teams keep generating a TON of press (eyes on the U), continue to sell out dual meets and the donations to the program keep rolling in the door. Men's Wrestling is easily the gold standard of athletics programs on their campus, and rightfully so. If I had to guess (and this is just a guess), Tom Brands' job is probably pretty secure at this point.3 points

No question Salazar would be better at 174 if he can maintain his energy levels. He's built like a brick sh*thouse, but he's also a solid head shorter than a lot of the guys he wrestles. It's only so useful to be yoked if you don't have the limb length to apply it at the angles you need to win positions. But Salazar is also gigantic. The 174/184 divide is one that very few wrestlers cross back and forth between, two distinctly different sizes of human being occupy those weightclasses, the gap is almost as big as the difference between 184 and 197. Just immense differences in horsepower (on average).3 points

When we take ownership of our actions through personal accountability, we're take the reins of our lives. We ditch the blame game and recognize the power to shape our own reality. This mindset is a game-changer; it transforms feelings of helplessness into empowerment. Personal accountability is more than just saying, "My bad." It's about setting the bar higher for ourselves. It means setting goals and making sure we follow through. It's about owning our mistakes, learning from them, and striving to do better next time. It's all about being true to ourselves, staying honest, and sticking to our word. It sets us apart, earning respect not only from others but also from ourselves. It's the foundation of trust and credibility, which are essential for success in any area of life.2 points

It sounds like Michigan is going after a VT wrestler or two according to the hokie forum. I guess if true, this is the new model of team building going forward. It is a shame Michigan and others, focus more on spending $ recruiting proven wrestlers vs developing their own recruits.2 points

While they claim that co2 is causing more destructive storms (which is provably false) they also insist that our energy be generated from weather sensitive sources. I’d like to propose a solution to this madness. Starting now, no more precious petroleum derived energy may be wasted on building solar panels and wind mills. You need to use your green energy to build the mining equipment needed to mine the ore and process the steel, make the batteries, all the way to building and erecting the panels and turbines. Every step , transportation, everything. We know it can be done with coal, petroleum, and nuclear generation, if you can’t do it with green, then GTHOOH.2 points

well to explain not defend, Iowa had 20 plus years of running around talking about how people love to hate them. You have to pay a tax for that. Hence the scrutiny.2 points

Asking for help is an act of personal responsibility, as you are taking steps to address your situation and improve it. What concerns me is passing the buck without acknowledging your own agency and responsibility. It is fine to recognize tough circumstances... Okay, 'in spite of X', what are you (sometimes we) going to do about it? My tolerance is limited for anybody that blames others... promotes a sense of victimhood, powerlessness, and resignation... Fool me once, fool me twice...2 points

You do realize that the data shows, without doubt, that a person's chance of getting to a point where their addiction isn't controlling their life is much higher when THEY want to help themselves...aka, self accountability. In treatment what do you think they preach...yep...self accountability! Yes, I know some surround the treatment around God, but ultimately it still is all about self accountability. Also, one isn't going to not be homeless if they don't want to help themselves.2 points

Exactly - perhaps it has something to do with RBYs participation in Mexico? Anyone else see some of the vile comments made about this young man’s decision to do so? This is why someone like me doesn’t fit in. I find it totally UNACCEPTABLE the way we ( as a sport ) broadcast negativity about our wrestlers. It sucks and whether or not some realize this, we are hurting people and their families each time this crap is posted. Sorry RBY. You keep being you. The major majority still thanks you for entertaining us with your incredible mat skills and confidence. You are and will continue to be an inspiration to the sport. Keep up the great work young man, where ever you choose to wrestle!2 points

People who demand that others take care of them/others without first taking personal accountability for themselves strain communal resources and create challenges for the community. These people create a culture of dependency, erode trust, foster resentment, and undermine what they advocate for.2 points

I would be ashamed if I didn’t go to school for a year to get bigger for sports. Someone earlier said. I don’t see the advantage he gains from doing this. He literally sat out a year to get bigger lol. Maybe this guy should have been involved https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/truant officer2 points

Every program Dresser touches improves immensely. He took a small high school in Grundy, VA (coal country) and turned it into a decade long state championship team. Then went to Christiansburg high school just outside of Blacksburg and turned into a nationally ranked program. Then took VT from a near last place team finish at NCAA’s to a trophy team. Now he’s got the cyclones clicking on all cylinders2 points

Headline in Automotive News: Why are they surprised? Are EV owners too stupid to know that EVs are heavier and therefore will wear out tires much more quickly than normal useful cars? Silly question. Of course they are too stupid to realize this. Their "science" tells them many things that are just unbelievable, demonstrably wrong, fanciful, and impossible. Their science says they can drive a car that is 30 - 50% heavier yet have no negative effects. Just wait until they learn that their car insurance will probably go up as damages and fatalities increase in events involving EVs. All the Gretas will keep asking and accusing "How dare you, Physics, impose consequences on our decisions?"2 points

Yes and there are not good places to go eat downtown. My car got broken into at the 2021 NCAAs while sitting in a "monitored" lot. I hope that person had fun with the children's shirts and change they got. Probably a little bitter, but not going to shed a tear if I never go back there.2 points

Gimme Vito, Yianni, Dake I think Spencer has the best game in town when he’s healthy, but he’s like Gomez at this point, knees are always a concern. Yianni, I’m hoping, is back from his dinged noggin. Nick Lee has a very strong anti-Yianni style, but Yianni has the tools to go further. Dake…is Dake. It’s his weight class and, even though the weight class is deep, he’s a generational talent and its his time. Dake was very smart in that he adapted his style to be easier on his body. This was JB’s downfall I believe. 10K reps of ploughing his face into the faces and chests of the strongest people on the planet takes a toll.2 points

184 was a very weak weight Unlike 157 or 165.. It had no National Champions like the three in 174. Keckheisen does NOT have the past credentials of Brooks or Starocci. The second best guy had four losses. Brooks dominated Keck. last year and K. pales in comparison still. Jimmy C. likes to play devil's advocate ... against himself. It is Brooks Hodge whether you like him or not. He's earned it. Undefeated. Dominant. Took out another top undefeated guy. Four timer. Next topic.2 points

I am no college sports expert so Help me understand your point. I hate nil and how stars from small and medium will get poached. I hope Michigan’s model crashes and burns somehow. But if I am the AD at Little Rock and Nasir Bailey leaves—why will I cut the program? I may not like it…but the program costs the same as it did before Bailey came there. Most of these programs have no expectation of beating the power schools—same as all sports. In fact, wrestling offers them a better chance to get an AA than say basketball does. Don’t laugh at me if I am missing the obvious—just sincerely asking why nil will cause programs to be cut? I ask because we the wrestling community are rightfully angered by what Title ix did to wrestling. But when we scream about how we expect wrestling programs getting cut all the time, I think it almost gives AD’s the go ahead and do it. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So I am not apt to scream about the sky falling for reasons that maybe isn’t the cause unless I can understand why. And again, we agree—nil does suck.2 points

College wrestling knows it's boring. They made big scoring changes for that reason. Could they do more, yes. Funny the push out is being brought up. I remember when that was first implemented In freestyle and many people complained about it.2 points
