There is more opportunity for fans to watch wrestling now than there was ten years ago. I would think that interest and opportunity are tied to each other. Just B1G/B1G+ and ESPN+ have given us the opportunity to tune in to all walks of wrestling. Much more than we had ten years ago.3 points

Just for fun.... 125 this year might not fit into this topic, but I thought it would be cool to put together a lineup of "gatekeepers" at each weight. Definition of a gatekeeper is a wrestler that if you can beat them, it puts you in the conversation of being an all american at that weight. Maybe not one of the top 8 guys currently, but someone that puts your name on the radar if you top. (Obviously there can be multiple at each weight, here is just a few based on my quick glances at intermat rankings) Some of these weights you might have to win two matches in a row against these type guys. 125 - Anyone in the top 15 could go 0-2 at the NCAA's or be an NCAA champion 133 - Latona 141 - Clay Carlson, Vince Cornella 149 - Maybe an good win over Abas? 5-6 point victory 157 - This one is interesting because you have Chittum, Brayton Lee, and Lewan at the 14, 15, 16 (intermat). Beat one of those guys decidedly and I think you are in the conversation...but I also think they are ranked very low currently 165 - Caleb Fish 174 - Major over Pasiuk would be a "good win" and turn some heads 184 - combo win over Feldcamp and Soldano and people are taking notice 197 - Poznanski + Stemmet + Mac Stout 285 - Hunter Catka?3 points

Unlike some of you guys, with the amount of talent we have at some of these weights, I would much rather see our 3rd-4th-5th guys, try to make it to the big dance by transferring countries, instead of taking their talents to the Octagon right away. I love seeing Americans do their thing elsewhere when they genuinely had no shot here.3 points

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but: For the sake of the Iowa program, I hope Glazier has a good AA finish at NCAAs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

There are so many things happening in college sports I’m having trouble distilling it all into how NCAA D1 wrestling will be impacted. Big10 and SEC will withdraw from NCAA and start their own organization, ostensibly to benefit FB/BB almost exclusively. NIL money is basically robbing Peter to pay Paul, since those donations used to go to the schools to help fund Oly sports, offsetting the costs of competitive FB/BB programs. Declining enrollments and ever escalating costs will ultimately force almost all schools to cut Oly sports in order to compete in the FB/BB arms race. PSU, Iowa, Michigan, and maybe a few others have the self-funding to carry on, but no one else will have the cash to compete with them. Another D1 school adding women’s wrestling ain’t happening. “Total pipedream”. D1 wrestling is a dead man walking. I give it 5 years. Enjoy every bit we have left, because winter is coming. It should be noted that my understanding of the situation comes mostly from well-connected people who are the opposite of reactionary in their professional capacities. Is that about the gist of it? Will non-school affiliated club teams take over? Will anyone care? Attendance at freestyle events is dismal. Will that change? Enquiring minds want to know.2 points

Yes, 100%. The US is in a situation where, as the international “transfer market” heats up, non-qualified reps aren’t getting ill-prepared inexperienced national reps from countries that frankly don’t care about wrestling. They are getting US born and bred wrestlers who are NCAA champions, or at that level, with decades of top level experience. Retherford losing to Destribats, that was just odd. I have never seen someone catch a headlock from defending an ankle lace like that before, probably never will again. But Lee and Richards lost to guys who could potentially beat them 3-5 times out of 10. This is a new era for competing for Pan Am spots, and if we want to continue prioritizing olympic success, this is the next hill to climb. ”We’ll be fine” is the approach that USA wrestling took in the 2000’s, and we were definitely not fine. We sucked. I have no desire to go back to that era. We are now 80% of the way to missing 2 out of 6 weight classes at the olympics. That’s a step in the very wrong direction. We are also three retirements away from being back below 10th in the world praying for bronze medals again. That should be setting off alarm bells, bc when Dake, Taylor, and Snyder retire, they will be taking the lions share of USAW’s collective knowledge, investment, and experience with them. Oh btw, all those guys are all also coming out if the same house. So it’s not like the entire country is on fire with a glowing hotbed of gold medalists 4 rows deep champing at the bit behind them. There is now a major pressure release valve in the international transfer market, and guys will continue availing themselves of those options. Pan-Ams is not a tournament that USA wrestlers can take for granted anymore.2 points

And the 6 seed would be very fair to everyone. If Starocci is not injured and the 1 (and seeds play out) then he has the 4 in the semi and 2 in finals. If he goes in at 6 injured then everyone above bumbs up one. Let's say he recovery/figured out how to wrestle with injury by NCAA and is still the best. As 6 he has the 3 in the qrt same guy that wouldve been 4 in the semi. He then gets the 2 in semi the guy who would've been 3 prior and then the guy who would've been the 2 in the finals. So now he goes thru the prior 4 & 3 & 2 instead of just the 4 &2. Prob the least difference from being the healthy 1 seed.2 points

Indeed. A majority of their starters haven’t even wrestled the 15 matches needed to get an RPI. Pathetic!2 points

Gomez is definitely capable of winning it all. Just go back and watch what he did to Yianni in the dual meet. Yianni had only one other loss in college and it wasn't like that one. Gomez outwrestled him for 7 minutes in every position. Of course he is also capable of wrestling like he did against Ridge Lovett a few weeks ago. It will be interesting to see which Auatin shows up.2 points

I agree. Push out point is great. No more backing to the edge to hedge your bets. I love criteria as someone is always losing and incentivized to attack, but I am also ok with folkstyle, war of attrition, OT. But the point lost for a lost challenge is the best to me, but only in a setting where the review is done independently. No more lungers.2 points

Gomez is a wild card because he often tries to force big moves and gets himself in trouble. But when he is on and not wresckless, it won’t be a surprise if he wins it all.2 points

Zerban does have 1 win over #9WS Cardenas (8-5 SV1) who was R12 last year, and that's pretty much the only quality opponent he's beaten so far. But to this credit Zerban has been curbstomping all the pissants he's been wrestling.2 points

IM PLAYING!!!! 125 - Noah Surtin: he can beat anyone ahead of him and lose to a few behind him. He's my round of 12 Betsy 133 - Latona was a great pick OP, but I'm feeling Teske 141 - Hate to say it, cause I'm a fan, but Cole Mathews, burnout, injury, whatever, he has 9 or 10 losses this year. You got a win over this guy, you got a shot at the top 8. 149 - For me is D'Emilio, think he is a thoroughbred round of 12 non-AA 157 - This one is easy, Mr. Consistently not a top guy but you better be game Teague Travis 165 - Caleb Fish is the only answer here 174 - I like Mocco for this one, he's not great but wrestles good guys tough, anyone who beats him can make that top 8 184 - I like the OP said Feldkamp who may be the most one dimensional wrestler in all the NCAAs. If you can't figure him out you can't place.... but let me go with a freshman gatekeeper (I think Freshman)... Dylan Fishback from NCST, I think he's solid enough to be right there with most people ahead of him and a tough out for anyone behind him 197 - Stemmet is the first person I think of, I wish Surber wasn't in this category but I think he's a great measuring stick for AA or not. 285 - Lewis Fernandes all day don't trust him to beat anyone good, but he ain't losing to anyone bad. Mr. Round of 12.2 points

In the most respectful way. No changes need to be made, any of the top 5 guys believe they are going to make the team at both weights 57kg and 65kg. And believe they have a shot at an Olympic medal. So questioning their motivation is ridiculous. They would also be favored in any match, against anyone from Pan-Am countries. Our Continental qualifier is truly a cakewalk of non-medal contenders at the Olympic games. It's easy to hindsight that "Anyone of our top guys except Retherford would've beaten Destribats"... if he and Retherford wrestled again right now would you bet me 1000 even money you get Destribats I get Retherford. Same for Gomez/Lee... I would say same for Richards vs Cruz, but RIchards always makes me uneasy, I couldn't do that one. We get unlucky sometimes, no matter how you slice it, we just didn't perform it's unpredictable even though it seems predictable AF.2 points

I genuinely believe with the way the schedule goes combined with the USAW tournament setup rather than selection by committee that this is the best approach. The rep has to peak for OTT and Olympics no matter what. The tricky part is this worst-case scenario. The rep has to peak for at least Pan Ams. THEN we hit the muck. It's great in theory and I support sending the current rep under definition of 1 season = WTT to OTT but USAW created "The Gilman Rule" specifically because of 57 not medaling last year. Of course, Gilman lost TWICE and if everyone is so butthurt about Richards losing then they should *really* be worried about the guy who proved throughout the calendar year that he wasn't the best rep. So now you have to peak for a 3 match series AND og last chance. It's a lot. But would you rather hit a series of peaks from March through May or peak b2b2b all in a row? Neither is a good solution honestly. But given our selection system of keep what you kill then this seems to be the least bad option.2 points

Glazier was 9-7 as a sparsely used backup prior to this season. This year he's 16-1 with over 70% of his wins by way of bonus, including an 11-2 major over Silas Allred (probably his best win). He doesn't have many "premium" wins with his win over Allred and Surber from OSU probably being his biggest wins. How good is he? The way I see it, Glazier rode the bench behind Jacob Warner, a 5 time All American (including 2020). A lot of really good wrestlers would've rode the bench behind Warner. I remember getting whipped by a "B" team kid back in HS. I was astonished because I was an All State wrestler myself, how could the B team kid beat me? Because he was B team behind a dominant 3 time state champion, who he wrestled everyday in practice. I didn't feel so bad when that 190 pound B teamer only lost to the 4A State HWT champ 4-3 . That said, Warner was not a super dominant champion or anything, but I think Glazier looks pretty solid, especially considering his close match vs a rusty Ferrari. I think Glazier will finish top 5. What do you guys think?1 point

I disagree, he has some "punk" in him but he has been a good kid his entire wrestling career. He has flexed on coaches etc, which I would beat the hell out of my kid for doing that, but zero trouble from him. Anthony and smeared crap on walls, stole cell phones, jumped kids etc, AJJ has flashed woman, and you know the history there. We will see, it is a gamble for sure, but he is not guilty at all of association IMO1 point

It will be interesting to see how he matches up with Jaxon Smith if they meet at Big 10’s. Smith has some really slick stuff and Glazier has been able to get to the legs of everyone he’s wrestled this year and finish on everyone except Brooks (and AJ I guess).1 point

NCAA wrestling will still exist, but there will be fewer teams and fewer opportunities for athletes. It's a shame, but the sport seems to be decreasing in popularity anyway over the past 10 years or so with the lack of interest in the regular season making NCAAs really the only event worth watching. The problem with that approach is because of the lack of the regular season, we lose the drama associated with NCAAs. Also, the transfers only magnify this problem because it decreases parity and the athletes are less associated with their universities. There is unfortunately no incentive for the major programs that control the sport to work to increase its popularity overall (vs ensure their own success at NCAAs).1 point

Has Biden operated a form he inherited and been notorious about ripping off contractors? There are 3 reasons Trump doesn't pay his bills. He is broke, he is cheap or the people he owes money to realize it isn't worth the trouble so they cut their losses. Biden isn't perfect by any means. But he is leaps and bounds more qualified than a guy who has never had to work a real job or do anything for himself ever.1 point

So you think a guy who is morally and probably financially bankrupt, or at least in massive debt, is a better choice? Trump has basically turned everything he has touched to shit. If his dad didn't bail him out he would have lost his casinos a lot sooner than he did. I think wanting an adult who isn't prone to getting into fights on Twitter with teenagers as president is something most rational people want.1 point

I would love to See the PAC 12 kind of join forces with the Mountain West and other non Power 5s of the Big 12 and make a conference could be interesting. That would have Oregon State, Air Force, Wyoming. Then maybe also take some other teams that aren't necessarily going to compete with the true Power 5s of the big 12 like Cal Baptist, North Dakota State, South Dakota State. Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, and Utah Valley. I am pretty sure wrestling though is not the main concern of conference realignment and I also don't think those coaches would want to give up their Big 12 associate affiliation. That would still leave Iowa State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and Arizona State in the Big 12.1 point

Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) are seeking girls residential life staff or classroom teaching positions and will also serve as an assistant coach for the boys & girls wrestling teams, with a particular focus on developing our girls team. Resident life positions are responsible for providing supervision of the dorm residents while they are not in school and on weekends, while maintaining a positive living and learning environment. We are also looking to fill several faculty positions for the 2024-25 school year as well. Oak Hill has both boys and girls wrestling programs. While small in numbers, there are solid cores in place for both teams and are looking to make a jump in growth and competitiveness next season. We are looking for a female assistant coach to help develop the girls program further. We are ideally looking for a coach that has wrestled in college, has a strong freestyle background, wants to be a positive, supportive force for our girls and is passionate about showing all of our athletes how much fun wrestling can be.
