For as long as I can recall, Cornell schedules a tough opponent near the end (mid-February and later) of the dual season. It seems to work, as they consistently perform well at the EIWA and NCAA tournaments. So, it works for them. I can give you Coach Grey's email address if you'd like to suggest how they can change their season strategy to better align with your opinion. Keep in mind that Coach Grey cannot, when making the schedule, predict the medical or other status of everyone on the team six months out. Maybe, just maybe, they get more out of wrestling a tough opponent than they do out of another blowout of an EIWA team. Can you remind me who sat out the great out-of-conference duals against Missouri and Ohio State this year? TIA. "All you do:" sheesh. Cornella is injured. Period. Everyone who follows Cornell, and even some who don't, know that. Coach Grey isn't "sitting him." Vito never "sits out" a dual unless there is a very good reason to do so, and ducking ain't one of those reasons. Again, those who follow Cornell, and many who don't, know that Vito has had injury issues all season until recently, and even last weekend appeared to take a knock to the head that momentarily stunned him. Finally, last I checked, any team other than Penn State whose best guys don't take the mat often lose because of it.4 points

Such a great post. I also believe Max said after his NCAA title that he was struggling mentally before the final, but Ben came down and talked to him and got his mind right. Same thing with Keegan if you watch Funky 2.0 on Flo.3 points

The city had barely recovered from the Great Chicago Fire caused by Mrs. O'Leary's cow when a new battle came up. Those same business men you cited were already busy valiantly serving their brothers and sisters in the Great Ketchup War of 1851. It was either let Northwestern keep its name or let Big Ketchup win and thank god those brave men said "Up with sport peppers, down with Heinz! The Oregon Trail will never happen!"2 points

I created my own rankings using these metrics today. I am curious to see how well this predicts All Americans. 30% weight on GRIT (performance in top level matches) 20% weight on Best Win Quality against ranked guys 15% weight on Recent Performances last month 13% weight on Hammer rating (how much you destroy opposition measured taking into account strength of your opposition) 12% weight on Consistency (how your win% pairs up with your strength of schedule) 10% weight on Strength of Schedule This gives me 3 tiers of guys A TIER 1 Ramos 387, 2 Ayala 385, 3 Spratley 357, 4 Stanich 345 B TIER 5 Flynn 311, 6 Davis 297, 7 Smith 285 C TIER 8 DeAugustino 267, 9 Poulin 260, 10 Provo252, 11(TIE) Jordan/Surtin 250, 13 Kaylor 244, 14 Noto 242, 15 Volk 240 D TIER 16 McKee 206, 17 Barnett 202, 18 Camacho 1952 points

If your business model included charging people for your product or service, how would you feel if someone stole your product or service and made it available to others for free? You good with that? Just sign up for a free trial of a TV provider that carries the network (in this case ACCNX), and cancel if you don't like the network (that's why they offer free trials: some people keep it, some people forget to cancel). Blatant theft.2 points

Wrestleknownothing messaged the correct answer to me yesterday but suggested not posting the answer until today. So --- Ted Anderson of Central Oklahoma in 1936 and George Lewis of Waynesburg in 1948. It can't be done under current rules, so the answers come from tournaments that didn't use those rules. The 1936 and 1948 tournaments used the Olympic bad-mark system and also Olympic weight classes and rules. Losing a bout earned 2 or 3 bad marks; winning a decision earned 1; winning by fall, forfeit, or default earned none. Things we'd consider weird happened; for instance, in 1936 Lehigh's Dick Bishop lost a decision but his opponent was the one eliminated -- the guy hit his bad mark limit (5), Bishop advanced and finished 4th. In 1936 Rudy Ashman (Lehigh) beat Anderson in the first round at 123 pounds but was injured and couldn't continue. Anderson won the rest of his bouts and won the title. 1948 was more complicated. Paul McDaniel (Oklahoma State) came into Round 5 at 125 pounds with 1 bad mark; Rometo Macias had 4, Gene McDonald had 2, Lewis had 1. Five bad marks eliminated a wrestler; these were the last four guys alive. Lewis had beaten Macias and McDonald already. So Macias pinned McDonald, who was eliminated; McDaniel beat Lewis by decision. Now Macias had 4 bad marks, McDaniel 2, Lewis 4. Macias and McDaniel had not yet wrestled, so in Round 6 Macias decisioned McDaniel, leaving both wrestlers with 5 bad marks. There was no Round 7. Lewis, with 4 bad marks, was the champion. McDaniel, having lost to Macias, was 3rd. One odd note: none of these guys wound up wrestling in the 1948 Olympics. That honor went to Iowa State Teacher College's Gerry Leeman, who'd been eliminated in the 4th round. Leeman took silver at London (so .... no better than 5th at NCAAs, 2nd in the World).2 points

Askren will never be the best with little kids because he is one of the rare ones that understands running kids into the ground with 140 matches is an awful benchmark. Oh wait...2 points
-
Askren has an ego the size of Missouri. No way he coaches under somebody. He'll even struggle with university administration, I guarantee it. Camps and stuff work for him because he's the boss. Was going to suggest Oregon State but y'all beat me to it lol2 points
-
If he took a head coaching job somewhere he would have access to the hammers that his brother, coach Mesenbrink and the other AWA coaches are putting out. That pipeline would certainly help out. I think he would be a successful college coach as long as he could play nice with the administration on things. As a wrestling mind, he is one of the best.2 points

In case you missed it Tucker is in Russia and has been going on about how clean the streets and subways are, much nicer than anything you are going to find in America he says. And....... he is absolutely right. I have spent time in Russia and they keep the streets, sidewalks, subways, etc immaculate. No joke, you could picnic on the ground in the subways. I don't like to wear shoes, if i can walk around barefoot I'm going to......boy did I get some looks of death. But what is not being told is the 'why'? Why are the streets, sidewalks, and subways all so immaculate? Because when you have freedom, you also have the freedom to make the wrong choice. Unfortunately freedom isn't free. It takes work and also takes acceptance that people are going to do stupid shit when they are free to do so. That's a pretty important part of the story...1 point

Askren has been coaching for years at Askren Wrestling Academy (AWA) with his brother. Supposedly, it is one of the best clubs. He's helped to produce a whole bunch of elite guys: Kegan O'Toole, Mesenbrink, Keckheisen, etc. He goes to tournaments with his kids and has fed many of them into the best college schools. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo6F2kLzD59li40zNKSeX7g/videos1 point

Part of being successful is knowing what you are good at and what you should delegate. I think we know his comparative advantage is not in administrative things or dealing with administration. His very first action should be to hire a top assistant who has experience and tact in this area.1 point

I didn't take his statement on FRL to mean that he necessarily wants to get into college coaching. Maybe he just wants to spend more time with or expand his club coaching. He mentioned Freddie Roach as motivating him to coach and he is a boxing and MMA trainer.1 point

The 2020 season counted against eligibility even though there was no tournament. As a result the seniors in 2020 got screwed. By making 2021 the free year, the NCAA effectively took the 2020 seniors' eligibility and transferred it to high school seniors. Thus you have Starocci with the chance to win five NCAA titles instead of four. Which is bad enough, but it also means that, in spite of not having wrestled for the past two years AJ Ferrari still has a chance to be a four time winner, even though he is an all-time loser. I can see why you would assume this would not be the case. It was one of the all-time worst decisions made by the NCAA, and there is a lot of competition for the title.1 point

Well…..because I wasn’t talking about Obama, nor did I say he was saying anything about the advantages of the communist system. I made note that he omitted the role that freedom, or lack thereof, has on the topic, which is a pretty powerful impact. In other words my whole point of the post is he failed to mention how not being a free people plays into that. Now, whether he left that out intentionally or unintentionally I’m sure can be debated to ad nauseam. In a chat room full of ‘patriots’, I don’t see why pointing that out would be an issue.1 point
