  7. To come full circle we also need to look at the teams who have had success recruiting outside of The Big Board. These schools would have to be considered the raw materials champs. They get those lumps of carbon and turn them into diamonds. Cornell Reigns Supreme There is a reason Cornell has become a regular podium contender: 11 AA's from 6 wrestlers who did not make the Top 100 Big Board slots. Caveat: When dealing with name data things can get messy. Mapping Toms to Thomases and Zaches to Zacharyes is time consuming, manual, and very error prone. And weeding out the Ramon Bravo-Youngs from the Roman Bravo-Youngs or the Sorensons from the Sorensens is inexact at best. Add to that that you are looking for the absence of something and I expect that these numbers are very good approximations rather than according to Hoyle correct.

  12. It was the men's choice to accept the benefits against the risks; they put in the work and took advantage of the opportunity. There is much positive to be said and had for joining the military... Both my mother and MIL worked during the day and went to night school to earn nursing degrees. I recall my mother bringing me to some of her classes. My eldest sister was an unhappy SAHM with four children and chose divorce. She joined another family with her four children to split rent on a house. While on government assistance, she used grants and loans to put herself through college. She has a good and stable salary now... Granted, my kin had access to education, family, and neighborhoods that helped create access to the opportunity. Sure, education, family, and neighborhoods affect social mobility. There are other 'luck' considerations that impact raising one's social mobility... but in the US... hard work goes a long way to overcoming hard luck. Hard work... The USA doesn't care how hard you work; it pays for performance. When the consumer purchases a car, factors like employee effort and work hours are not considered. Rather, decisions are based on quality, cost, and availability. So how does the employee generate quality? They either have the rare skill to work smarter, or they choose to work harder. The employee who works smarter or harder than his peers will find himself with better luck. Don't have the energy to discuss the edge cases. But ***duck**. Hard work's separation isn't enough anymore for those that 'have' let alone those that don't. Life is expensive.

  15. I understand your point, but it is a little disingenuous bc musukayev, for example, is from russia, as are a number of entrants in most weight classes each year. I checked, and as far as I can tell musukayev was the only russian in yiannis weight that year. This is an interesting topic broadly, but its kind of turning into a thread just bagging on yianni. We have seen a lot of crossover success from strong ncaa performances leading directly to international success, and yianni is one of those guys. Would this thread exist if yianni had beaten nick lee this year but failed to place? He’d still be a 4x champ and silver medalist. Is this just recency speaking? What role did yianni play in vito running roughshod over everyone in the world this year? Certainly greater than zero. I think you are also forgetting the absolute slump that USA wrestling was in for ~15 years starting in 97 and ending with burroughs and varner in 2012. We straight up blew. Sucked. Hot garbage in wrestling shoes. We had some solid performances from individuals, but the average US performance was to get outclassed and shown the door after round 1. So has yianni underperformed against early hopes and excitement, both our and his own, yes. But, he is of heartier, more capable, better prepared stock than the US has produced in a long time. Him underperforming is because we are better, not bc he dropped the ball. Let’s also give some credit to Nick Lee, bc he is nasty in his own right. Dude rose to the occasion.

  17. I thought this thread was about me in the first place....I have shared this before, but..... Back in the 80's I bumped up an age group at Vegas. I won a few matches then ran into a kid I never heard of...John Buxton. I had never seen a leg lace before, so I had also never seen a counter or defense for it. He took me down and leg laced me until we went out of bounds. I had no idea what happened. Then in a scramble, he locked it up and turned me until we went out of bounds again. Match over. He may still be leg lacing me to to this day had there not been a 12 point tech fall at that time. He went on to become an AA at Nebraska, having some great matches with Eric Aiken from Iowa State... I did not. Probably the best kid I ever faced in high school.

  24. It seems that 3pt does not appreciate hard work and what it can do to open doors. Not surprising viewing the other things he has written. I've seen this play out. I have 5 boys. One is a hard worker, has various businesses he owns and is successful and makes a lot of money. Yes, he got some breaks. But it was his hard work and do not take NO for an answer that made him successful. He tries to get his brothers to take such entrepreneurial risks but they are unwilling to put in such effort. So they are not as successful as he is. All are very smart, but he is really the only one that takes action. They all started similarly. I have to say, I am not near as bold as he is, so the other 4 take more after me. I'm not sure where the one son got his drive at but that is the difference. He makes more than me. Now to be fair, I have another son that got a college degree and got a job at a place. He quit and got a better job and more pay but not like the one son. But he's doing ok. Another has an associates college degree, but has a pretty good job doing maintenance on equipment. But there is no upward mobility there so he will soon hit a ceiling but it is good for now for him. He is under 30. The other two are younger and basically retail workers, min wage type jobs. Their outlook is not as good. They have no future education (academic or trade) goals so they are essentially stuck at HS diploma level type jobs, unless they take after the one brother. It is the drive to succeed that makes the difference. What I view as risk, my one son views as opportunity. If he spends 40k to make 80k, that is money well spent and he makes the difference and then the whole thing the next year. I don't think that way. I think, where would I get the 40k, and then how do I get the work to get the 80k? He is a wonder for sure. For instance, he decided he was gonna do snow plowing. The truck and rig cost right around 40k. He figured he could easily make 120k and had contracts already lined up. He has been doing that for a few years. Part of that is spreading salt when it goes under freezing. He makes a lot of money for little actual work, even here in Seattle area. He and his wife have two other businesses that bring in enough money to live very well on. mspart

  25. This afternoon the largest remaining domino in the Class of 2024 recruiting game fell as #2 overall Cody Merrill (Gilroy, CA) announced his collegiate intentions. Merrill has given a verbal to Oklahoma State University where he projects to wrestle at either 197 or 285 lbs. As a sophomore, Merrill won a 2022 California state champion at 195 lbs. He did not wrestle in the 2023 tournament due to injuries. On the national scene, Merrill has won Junior National freestyle titles in Fargo in each of the last two summers. Back in 2021, Merrill captured a stop sign in the 16U Greco-Roman division and was a runner-up in freestyle. Earlier that year, he placed top-four in both styles at the U17 World Team Trials. Those placements set the stage for Merrill to make the 2022 U17 World Team in Greco. In his first taste of international competition, Merrill went to Rome and came away with a bronze medal at 92 kg. Merrill was last seen at FloWrestling’s Who’s #1 where he put up a 14-3 major decision over Iowa State recruit Sawyer Bartelt to solidify his top billing. He’s currently ranked number one in the country at 220 lb by MatScouts. The Oklahoma State choice shouldn’t come as a surprise since Merrill’s high school coach is former Cowboy star Daniel Cormier, also of Olympic and UFC fame. We’ll have to see how the Oklahoma State lineup shakes out going forward. The Cowboys signed one of the top recruits in the Class of 2023, Christian Carroll, and he appears to be their heavyweight of the foreseeable future. Oklahoma State doesn’t have a set-in-stone plan at 197 lbs; however, they do have plenty of options at 174 and 184 that could grow into the weight. If Merrill maintains 197, then OSU would have an excellent one-two punch at the back of their lineup. Merrill joins #40 JJ McComas (Stillwater, OK) and Kolter Burton (American Falls, ID) in Oklahoma State’s Class of 2024. The Cowboys Class of 2023 was ranked #1 in the nation by InterMat. For Merrill’s commitment profile and all of our recruiting information check out InterMat’s commitment page.

  29. Look, I don’t know about you, but as far as muslims are concerned, I am an infidel. My life means nothing to them. They’ve never done anything for me, nor would they, yet my money has gone to aid them. They would as soon kill me as kill a Jew, and they don’t need any more excuse than that i am not of their religion. I wouldn’t be able to avoid this by becoming a muslim, because I wouldn’t know whether to join the sunni or the shia, and evidently, the wrong choice is deadly. So you enjoy running interference for them while you’re safe to do so. But I’m not seeing the innocence.

  31. Updated with Olympic results added from 2020 (really 2021). Conclusion: 65 kg is the only weight without a champion winning back-to-back years. 65kg also has the lowest number of wrestlers placing multiple times (4). Of the wrestlers that have placed multiple times, 65kg also has the lowest number of total medals (10) from the multiple time placers. Thus, we can deduce that 65kg has the most parity of all the Olympic weights. 57kg 2018: Uguev, Sanayev, Takahashi/Atli 2019: Uguev, Atli, Dahiya/Sanyev 2020: Uguev, Kumar, Sanayev/Gilman 2021: Gilman, Sarlak, Tsiutryn/Lehr 2022: Abakarov, Gilman, Zanabazar/Micic 2023: Micic, Higuchi, Abakarov/Harutyunyan We have one three-peat champion in Uguev (3 gold). We have 5 others that placed multiple times in Sanayev (1 silver, 2 bronze), Atli (1 silver, 1 bronze), Gilman (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Abakarov ( 1 gold, 1 bronze), Micic (1 gold, 1 bronze). 65kg 2018: Otoguro, Bajrang, Valdes/Chakaev 2019: Rashidov, Niyazbekov, Muszukajev/Bajrang 2020: Otoguro, Aliyev, Rashidov/Bajrang 2021: Shakhiev, Yazdani, Osmonov/Tulga 2022: Amouzad, Yianni, Muszukajev/Bajrang 2023: Muszukajev, Riveria, Mamedov/Tevanyan No repeat champions but Otoguro won two titles (2 gold). 3 other wrestlers that have placed multiple times: Muszukajev (1 gold, 2 bronze), Rashidov (1 gold, 1 bronze) and Bajrang (3 Bronze). 74kg 2018: Sidakov, Kentchadze, Burroughs/Abdurakhmonov 2019: Sidakov, Chamizo, Kaisanov/Burroughs 2020:Sidakov, Kadzimahamedau, Dake/Abdurakhmonov 2021: Dake, Salkazanov, Bizhoev/Eryilmaz 2022: Dake, Salkazanov, Enami/Demirtas 2023: Sidakov, Dake, Takatani/Tsabolov We had 1 guy three-peat: Sidakov (4 gold) and 1 repeat: Dake (2 gold, 1 silver, 1 Bronze) as champions. Additionally, we had 3 others place multiple times in Burroughs (2 bronze), Abdurakhmonov (2 bronze) and Salkazanov (2 silver). 86kg 2018: DT, Erdin, Friev/Yazdani 2019: Yazdani, Punia, Naifonov/Reichmuth 2020: DT, Yazdani, Naifonov/Amine 2021: Yazdani, DT, Abakarov/Naifonov 2022: DT, Yazdani, Dauletbekov/Makojev 2023: DT, Yazdani, Dauletbekov/Amine We had 2 guys repeat as champs in Yazdani (2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and DT (3 gold, 1 silver). 3 others place multiple times in Naifonov (3 bronze), Amine (2 bronze) & Dauletbekov (2 bronze). 97kg 2018: Sadulaev, Snyder, Odikadze/Conyedo 2019: Sadulaev, Sharifov, Nurov/Snyder 2020: Sadulaev, Snyder, Salas/Conyedo 2021: Sadulaev, Snyder, Goleij/Zakariiev 2022: Snyder, Tsakulov, Magomedov/Matcharashvili 2023: Tazhudinov, Magodedov, Matcharashvili/Synder We have one four-peat champion in Sadulaev. 4 others placed multiple times in Snyder (1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), Magomedov (1 silver, 1 bronze), Matcharachvili (2 bronze), Conyedo (2 bronze). 125kg 2018: Petriashvili, Deng, Hadi/Gwiazdowski 2019: Petriashvili, Akgul, Deng/Khotsianivski 2020: Steveson, Petriashvili, Zare/Akgul 2021: Zare, Petriashvili, Lkhagvagerel/Akgul 2022: Akgul, Lkhagvagerel, Petriashvili/Zare 2023: Zare, Petriashvili, Akgul/Parris We have one repeat champ in Petriashvili (2 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze) and one with multiple titles with years between in Zare (2 gold, 2 bronze). 3 others placed multiple times in Deng (1 silver, 1 bronze), Akgul (1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze) & Lkhagvegerel (1 silver, 1 bronze).

  36. I think people forget about the critical thing of doctor's getting to know their patients and their history in order to better treat their patients. I'll take my luck with the private healthcare facilities. I am all for improving things and making things better, but to use other countries as examples of a great health care system is laughable. My question, what as American's are you willing to give up for a government healthcare system?? Roads? How about the over-bloated welfare system? The IRS? I like the private healthcare system, but if people want to have a public "free" heath care system in addition to the private, have at it. And how about those that support it and want to use it are the ones who pay for it?

  38. This is how I see the potential matches... 125 Ventresca - VT over McCrone or Kilkeary - Both should be decisions 133 Latona - VT over Bouzakis or Gonzales - Both should be decisions, potentially wide ones 141 Mendez - tOSU over Mason or Church - I am thinking Major for both Cannon - tOSU TOSSUP Mason or Church - Not enough info to predict this one. I would think with how Cannon wrestled this last weekend he would be favored. 149 Henson - VT TOSSUP D'Emilio - Both of these guys looked really, really good this last weekend. Henson should be favored, but I think it's a tossup. D'Emilio - tOSU over Crook - Wide Decision/Major type match if this one happens Henson/Crook - VT over Brown - Henson likely gets bonus and Crook may push for it 157 Gallagher - tOSU over Andonian/Ulrey/Hipolito - Gallagher looked phenomenal. Despite it being 'short notice' that he goes 157 this season, he looked phenomenal. I think he wins via Decision over either of these. With the new TD rules it could be a Major against any of them... especially if Andonian gets down because of a failed throw early 165 Wilcox over Ulrey/Hipolito? - This weight class is going to be an interesting, and pivotal one for the dual. Neither's starter is healthy. Do they both go because they are the best option? Not sure. If Andonian doesn't go at 157 I could see them throwing out Hipolito or Ulrey at 157 and the other at 165. I think Wilcox wins a tight decision against either. If Andonian goes at 157 I expect it to be Ulrey. 174 Kharchla over Lewis - I don't think we see Kharchla here, but if we do I think he wins. Styles make matches. Lewis over Welsh - This won't really be that close. Welsh is as ready as any Frosh at 174 this year, but Lewis is just too much for him, I think. Kharchla/Welsh over Clark - If we don't see Lewis it'll likely be Clark, I think. Not too sure, actually. I still have hopes it is Ulrey-Andonian-Brady-Lewis at 157-184 for VTech. That won't happen, though. 184 Hoffman/Shumate/Rogotzke over Fisher - I think all get wide Decisions over Fisher. Not sold on Fisher yet and I think tOSU has a deep stable to pull from here. 197 Smith/Stewart over Geog/Shumate/Rogotzke - I think whoever VTech puts out should or would be favored over whoever tOSU puts out here. Pretty sure Stewart is hurt, though. 285 Feldman over Catka - I think Feldman starts to cement the fact that he is the best first year starter in NCAA D1 with this match. He looks bigger, but somehow less 'poofy' than last year... just carrying the weight in a more natural weight it seems. He is giving me hella Shortman Coon vibes... don't ask me why or how I just have a feeling in my berries. That means he is going to compete with everyone who isn't throwing old man strength at him right out the gate here (The only Michael McClure I see for him might be Cassioppi right now? That doesn't mean I am predicting him to beat Kerk or Hendrickson, I am just saying he is going to be ready for those matches.). This is all going to come down to how creative VTech can get with their lineup in the middle to put out their best product. I think tOSU has more depth right now in the upper weights that they can afford injuries right now. If both squads put out their best product it is going to be a barn burner. If one squad doesn't, then it could be something like a 25-12 victory for one or the other. We could see a lineup like this... 125 - Ventresca - Kilkeary 133 - Latona - Bouzakis 141 - Church - Mendez 149 - Hensen - D'Emilio 157 - Ulrey - Gallagher 165 - Andonian - Hepner 174 - Brady - Welsh 184 - Lewis - Hoffman 197 - Smith - Geogg 285 - Catka - Feldman Or this... 125 - Ventresca - McCrone 133 - Latona - Gonzalez 141 - Mason - Cannon 149 - Hensen - D'Emilio 157 - Andonian - Gallagher 165 - Brady - Wilcox 174 - Lewis - Chase 184 - Fisher - Hoffman 197 - Smith - Shumate 285 - Catcka - Boykin Or... well I could keep going. I don't think either of those lineups will be what is put out, though. This is an early season dual and I think the coaches are looking to put on a showcase and want to put out their best possible lineups. Right now both sides have some dings and I don't know what to expect. I do know that one of those lineups I just posted makes me, as a fan, much more excited for the dual than the other.

  39. I think we see Welsh at 174. I didn't see the nature of his injury this last weekend. Re-aggravation or something more like precaution? If it is re-aggravation, then I might expect a medical at this point? Welsh looks ready right now. He won't win it, but neither was a healthy Kharchla. I think their peak performances are comparable.
