Well, about all I learned from this thread is why some people are called Progressives and some aren't. Left to your own devices, some of you would still be wearing fig leaves and riding donkeys.3 points

Would you have rathered I highjacked the thread with a bunch of unrelated blather out of the conservative playbook? To wit: "For instance, here in WA, your child says he/she is trans..." Or would you have rathered I pulled out the well-worn "They're after us" gem that we've all heard a bazillion times? To wit: "But don't for a minute believe there aren't those that want to disarm or allow only peashooters." Thanks to the sheep following along as they've been trained to, this thread was going exactly the same place as the same discussion has gone in our country. Nowhere. Exactly as planned by those making money through said inaction.2 points

I need to get something off my chest (besides my opponent at state).... Caliendo's run to AA was good....but I am bias, in that Matthew Olguin (sophomore) got hurt in the first round of the tourney but kept wrestling . Lost 9-8 to Caliendo. Griffith beat Caliendo at the NCAA in their most recent match-up. Olguin beat Griffith two straight matches at the end of the season.... including the Pac-12 final. All that to say, you are correct that the margins are slim, however I am adding Olguin to that conversation for next year.2 points

No it was a weird way to make this a trans issue. Trans people are the flavor of the week for you and your cronies so you have to find a way to pull them into any subject possible. Once you mentioned trans I stopped reading.2 points

The student could claim the standard deduction regardless. You might be thinking of exemptions which went away back in 2018 with Trumps changes. If the student is paying their tuition and room and board via NIL $$ their parents likely aren't supporting them to the level required to claim the student anyway. A combination of factors would likely make it more advantageous for the parent to not claim their child as a dependent if the child was a full time student paying their own tuition/room/board with NIL money. It likely wouldn't impact the parents deductions unless it was the difference between being able to claim head of household for the parent. A college age child is unlikely to be a qualifying child unless they are younger than typical. Similarly a college age student would likely have aged out of most child tax credits that parents typically claim. Educational tax credits would likely be what decides where the student is claimed as a dependent. These can only be claimed by the person incurring the qualified education expenses. The parents not paying educational expenses would be prevented them from claiming these. The student would also not be able to claim them if they were a dependent on their parents taxes. The solution would be for the student to claim themselves as a dependent provided their income does not profit them from claiming the educational tax credits.1 point

Why would anyone be surprised Brands, inc would want AJ on the team no matter what he has done? After all, both of them still wrestled for Foxcatcher after DuPont murdered Dave Schultz.1 point

Copy and paste strikes again. Read my post above Or, just drug them up, that’s a lot easier. When someone says they don’t know what can be done about parenting other than just drug them up, and then tries to double down on it…. not sure I can even continue with the conversation with them. They’re either not serious and just trying to be stupid, or they’re too far gone1 point

An NIL agreement would need to provide above the $$ value of a full ride scholarship to replace it. NIL deals are income and get taxed. Scholarships generally are not taxable. Tuition, fees, room, board, books, ext at a school like Iowa is probably $50k. An NIL deal would need to be $65k+ to replace it.1 point

When a kid goes in the portal the school can recind scholarship offers for the next semester or year. It doesn't mean they will, but they can.1 point

I don’t think anyone can honestly distinguish the differences in parenting between the countries without spending ample time in those countries to get a handle on it. You certainly compare and contrast parenting through generations here in the US. Over the course of the 2000’s I have lived in the Great Lakes region, Colorado; and South Florida. Across the board I have seen an increase in parent driven entitlement, along with a parent driven decrease in coping skills. I said somewhere on here previously, we don’t force or teach kids coping skills nearly as much anymore. We don’t force kids into pressure situations with an average or better risk of failure. And often when ‘failure’ occurs, we don’t look at where we came up short and what we can do more or better, we make excuses, blame others, and make the kids feel like it was someone else’s malfeasance, rather than doing what the most successful people in the world do, which is fail over and over until they get it right. We are raising more and more kids like this, while also allowing them to have more and more access to these social media ‘influencers’, which was never around in generations past, and then sending them out in the real world.1 point

I'm not sure what you do about poor parenting on a national level. I don't know the distinguishing characteristics between nations. But here is one I think about. There has been an increase in student cheating over the past few decades. It has happened since time immemorial. But parents used to teach their kids that it was better to be honest than to lie. And it is better not to cheat because you are only cheating yourself and others. I'm sure many parents still teach this, but I'm also sure many don't. I'm guessing this is just as prevalent in UK, Australia and Canada. It does come back to parents instilling good ethics in their children while young and not letting them get away with breaking this. Else they learn it is a bunch of hokum. Who want's a doctor treating them that cheated through school? Or an Engineer who designs bridges and airplanes and buildings? But it seems that is the direction. If this is not stopped in the home, it will not stop. But to get parents, on a national level to do this would be very difficult. I do remember the ad campaign with the Indian crying due to trash in the water and roadways. It was actually a very effective campaign and we had a cleaner world in general from littering. Now I see crap all over the roads. Why? Could it be because parents are not teaching about littering? Could be. I'm not so sure poor parenting drives shootings. Most people instinctively know killing people is a No No. No matter what parents do, there will always be those that are bad people because they want to be bad. And lately, it seems the shootings are coming from mentally unstable people and parents can only do so much with that these days except drug them. And when the kid decides to go off the drugs, the parents don't have a say because the kid is 18 or more. Or perhaps the drugs are causing aberrant behavior. But in general, I think the more parents instill good ethics into their children, the less likely they will go killing people. How to do that on a national level is the question. mspart1 point

You only care about your whataboutisms. You don't actually care about the issue at hand. You only care about the extremes and offer no solutions or real dialogue other than what the other guy is doing. The retoric you spew adds nothing to the conversation, such as how you want to somehow make this a trans issue.1 point

I'm not a bourbon guy but involved somewhat in the industry on the marketing side (and live in Louisville, capital of bourbon) Green River just restarted operations in Owensboro, they are DSP 10 so been around forever, but stopped operations for a good bit... Recently was bought out by Bardstown Bourbon and they restarted everything.... I can't speak publically on what's in the works, but they have some really good product hitting the market soon... Also Rabbit Hole I'm told is good - they were neighbors next to my office and actually just bought our property If you ever want to get into Bourbon certification, gonna plug one of my clients, Stave & Thief - they have an online course (also in person if that's your thing)1 point

Important to remember that police reports are purposely written from one perspective to justify probable cause to arrest. The problem beyond the allegations for AJ in that one case is that it's not his only effing problem. People (not you necessarily) often conflate "presumption of innocence" criminally with the idea we should or do presume people innocent socially or in other facets. The standard of presumption of innocence exists in criminal cases because the government is trying to take away a person's freedom. Shit, we presume people guilty all the time. Countless examples: OJ Simpson, Casey Anthony, R. Kelly before his convictions, Michael Jackson. Right now in this country, the vast majority of Democrats are presuming Donald Trump is guilty of crimes (despite only being charged) and the vast majority of Republicans are assuming that Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden are guilty of crimes (despite neither having ever even been arrested) I do not know if AJ Ferrari will be found guilty of the crime he's charged with...I do know that regardless of that outcome, I do not want him to wrestle for my favorite team. I'm just one person with an opinion though.1 point

What's in Longview, Texas nowadays? LeTorneau U.? Unfortunately they dropped their program back during the 1980s. They'd consider reinstating if there were more teams in their conference or at least their region of Texas with which to compete.1 point

I wouldn't really expect statistical significance on the change in pinfalls. It's different wrestlers, and college guys are good at avoiding getting pinned. however, more techs means fewer minutes wrestling, so it's near certain that during some of those minutes and seconds that weren't wrestled, there likely would have been some falls happening. and if even of one of those missed pins happens in a close dual... The first college match i attended in 2016, I saw a 7pt move. It was sweet. takedown, backpoints, and then i think injury time. Of course if you give up a 7 pt move, make an escape, and then earn just two takedowns under new rules you're only trailing 8-7 at that point. the example of the 7pt move to earn a major at the end is an interesting one though! I guess the moral of the story is stay off your back. that would seem kind of like a cheap major, but not as bad as getting pinned in overtime. that never seemed like it should be worth the full 6 points (or whatever it is in a tournament) to me.1 point

Given the timing of when they've scheduled his criminal trial it definitely COULD happen depending on the outcome. Whether it should happen? No, of course, lol. This is just me speaking legally. Haines was an 18 year old true frosh last season, Franek was a 5th year last season. Haines has another year in a significantly better room with much better training partners (despite Bob Nichols' statements to the contrary). Haines is rolling with Zain and Nolf, regularly. Franek is/will be rolling with...Kennedy, and Caliendo? I'd go 8 of 10, for Haines, right now.1 point

Making World Team is hard. Outside of the freak exceptions like Burroughs/Snyder and few others, the reality is most guys don't maintain World Team spots for sustained periods of time. The list of guys competing in 2 Olympics is small. Ramos held the spot at the lightest weight for 2 years and he was the first guy to make back to back teams at the lightest weight since Henson in 2005 and 2006. Gilman first made the team in 2017 and will be 30 next year. Unfortunately, he is on the downside of his career. Add in that USA wrestling has a better system now and we could have multiple top 5 guys at a weight plus you have to squeeze into 6 - 8 weights depending on the year and I would guess we will continue to see more turnover on the World Team, regardless if we have a defending Medalist at the weight. Also, props to USA wrestling for putting the history of all World/Olympics teams in one spot. You can go down quite the rabbit hole. https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Team-USA/World-Team-History1 point

Gilman looked like he had a terrible cut, to the extent he didn’t even look surprised by the end of match 2. He’s been at it a long time, and while I generally pull team nittany lion, his success coming out of that room at his weight was an exception rather than the rule. NLWC certainly knows how to get guys big and strong and how to be successful in new larger frames, but that is always predicated upon the availability of a relatively close next weight class to access. They have never been able to consistently produce for the 125/57kg weight class. This many years into raging success at all other weights but heavyweight, I have a hard time seeing gilman’s success as anything other than deviation from the mean.1 point

This reminds me of a story I heard. A man was on the west coast walking on the beach and was talking with God. God told him he could have a wish. He really loved Hawaii and thought it would be really nice to build a bridge to Hawaii. So that is what he wished for. God said that was an impossible wish and to ask for something else. The man thought about it for a moment and said he would like to know how women think. In response, God asks, How many lanes do you want? mspart1 point
