I saw a Facebook on Tom Elling's Wrestling Page that leads me to believe that Gettysburg (PA) HS could possibly be inspiration behind the often-ridiculed polo-wearing coach in Vision Quest. The second photo below comes from the 1978 PIAA District III Section 1 program.5 points

Good for Nevills. Glad to see him back in a starting role AND at a program that really needs him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

No, because Gable did stockpile the nation's top high school recruits. I'll make my points in hoping we'll come to a general agreement but I highly doubt it. 1) In terms of Royce Alger not being a top ranked recruit it's a failure of the wrestling media at that time. It's unfair to cast total blame on wrestling media during that era due to them not having the resources that Flo, @Husker_Duetc benefit from in this modern era. By any metric, a 3x Iowa state champ and JR national title winner is a top 10 recruit. 2) You're conveniently omitting or do not know that for years Gable gave extra scholarships. Above the allotted amount allowed by the NCAA's which led to him eventually being sanctioned. To be fair, other Big 10 schools were also doing it but Iowa wrestling egregiously went over the allowed allotment which was proven in a report I will provide for you. Yes, Gable was stockpiling wrestlers. https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/miCaseView/report?id=101820 I dont blame Gable for doing this but he was gaming the system. AND he stockpiled wrestlers3 points

Do I think PSU is offering Truax $250 K? No way. I would have to see the bank statement with my own eyes for me to believe that is happening anywhere. This would be toxic to team culture. Here is what I think happens: established guys are taken off scholarship and given money from boosters to cover the difference, maybe a little more. This gives the coaches the dry powder necessary to give substantial scholarships to blue-chippers every year. If this is legal, it would be foolish not to do it. This is what I assumed happened with NLWC money before, without proof. Cael is a thoroughbred and relates to other elite athletes. I think his system, whatever it is, exactly, caters to this type of wrestler. For whatever reason, this system is not set up to coach up non-elite athletes. PSU has had plenty of holes in their lineup but it doesn't matter since the difference between a horrible wrestler and merely good is irrelevant in terms of NCAA points. It matters greatly in duals and is probably the reason Cael is vehemently opposed to changing the championship format. No doubt Cael is shrewd and uses every tool at his disposal to identify the right athletes. I suspect that is why he's your homeboy--what person has their finger on the pulse of high school recruits better than you? Who else on this planet knows which top recruits have overbearing fathers and will likely phone it in once away from home? Or were caught out past curfew at Cadet Worlds with some local babe from Tinder? These intangibles are essential to know who to pick. If I were Tom Brands, I would be kissing your ass too but I suspect he's too old school. Recruitment trumps development and Cael gets this better than anyone. I think TNT are still stuck in a bygone era thinking they can turn pack mules into champions. I am not even sure Gable could do that today. At this point, PSU is experiencing a virtuous cycle. Success begets recruits which begets success which comes back to the original point of the thread. The only thing stopping PSU from having 8+ champs a year is the fact that elite wrestlers want to compete. If the NCAA allowed multiple entries, PSU's B-team would be the second-best team in the country.3 points

LOL...you guys and your gaslighting. You're telling me wearing a Polo or a shirt and a tie under a singlet is "weird" or somehow NOT the norm?2 points

Well, it's too bad that University of Montana at present doesn't have a school of dentistry... Had they done so, young Mr. Matin could've gone of to Montana to raise up a crop of dental floss to help defray the cost of school. (Would've been a great idea at the time... had those Grizzlies established said dental school, but what the hey, eh? ) D32 points

When a non-athlete does it (like you describe), they do so on their own with no university affiliation. Their university doesn't help them find/get NIL deals for them in an effort to get them to attend/stay at their university and play a sport. Like it or not, universities don't exist for their student athletes and people would do well to remember that.2 points

I feel like he’s one of the kids who grew up just beating the daylights out of people from his feet and never really had to develop a baseline defense. Kind of crazy that he took 3rd at NCAAs giving up as many TDs as he did. Although, the “Call an ambulance…but not for me!” meme comes to mind. People get worn out scoring 1-2 TDs on him and then their wheels fall off in the third period. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Dems weren't really thrilled with Biden the first time, but he was the safe choice against Trump. As stated multiple times earlier, I can't believe these two are likely the choices to lead this country.2 points

You should update your stats. Smith has coached 34 national champs, thought the OSU website only has 33. Meanwhile, Sanderson has 34 at PSU and 2 at ISU, so with 36 he has the most of any active coach.2 points

Sounds anticompetitive and a violation of antitrust and other legal protections of the student athletes. NCAA athletes had to sue to get these rights and only after years NCAA schools reaping the economic rewards of student athletes.2 points

Last I checked Hidlay was dropped back down to 86 KG. If Hidlay is at 92 KG I have Jackson out and Hidlay in w/ Moore still being the victor.1 point

Also, I have to correct something from earlier. I said there were seven 4x Iowa champs prior to Royce's HS days, but I was mistaken about his graduating year. There would have only been five 4xers prior to 1983 (Bob Steenlage, Jeff Kerber, Scott Morningstar, Joe Gibbons, Greg Randall).1 point
-
Again, he was not. Royce graduated in 1983 from Lisbon High School and didn't even make the OTHER ALL-AMERICA SELECTIONS let alone the DREAM TEAM. Pretty cool to see John Smith on there though! https://www.wrestlingusa.com/high-school/ewExternalFiles/1983 High School All-Americans.pdf1 point

Well that would be cool. I remember when they were seniors they had a massive 1V2 showdown. Now they would get to train together. Damn. That is lame AF.1 point

Anybody care to offer their predictions? Perhaps a top 3, with champion choice? Like 86 KG. Top 3 are Valencia, Hall, and Brooks with the champion being Valencia.1 point

Ignoring era is also fuckwad shit. The 1972 Dolphins get owned by most of last the NFL last year, maybe the entire league. Speed, size, skill, training methods, etc. NCAA D1 wrestling is the best it has ever been in all those regards as well as the deepest it has ever been. Cael having that same percentage is much more impressive to anybody with a brain.1 point

Sanderson is calculated in his recruiting. He's very selective and targets specific weight classes. It's rare that he has 2 top tier guys at a single weight. If you sign with him that weight class is held for you in his rolling 5 year plan. Howard is his guy, that's why you haven't seen a newcomer onboard. Try to shift that plan like Suriano did and it creates waves. It's a rare day that you'll see a Dean / Beard situation at PSU. Dean wanted out of Cornell and Sanderson couldn't say no.1 point

If a non-athlete student (say, a student who is a comedian, model, video game player, etc.) is allowed to profit on his/her NIL, so should a student-athlete… or should expel that kid who gets sponsors for his YouTube stand-up gig, because he wants to make money while getting an education?1 point
-
Given all the wrestlers named Cael, I am certain Sanderson could find many willing recipients for his stud services. Set up booths at Tulsa, Fargo and Super32 and Russia will be an afterthought in a generation.1 point

That may be true, but I think the days of an Edinboro or Central Michigan having a period where they are right up there with the second tier of teams are effectively over.1 point

You are too easy to read. Your cynicism comes through in spades. Just by dropping Armstrong and doubting altruism is enough for me counselor.1 point

So by what you said PSU is doing nothing ar all wrong. Kids and senior athletes want to train at arguably the best place in the world and NIL is legal everywhere, do you have numbers that they are getting or being offered more than anywhere else? As your Armstrong comment implies. Perhaps when student athletes see the powerful comments from Max Dean (Who lobbied to go to PSU) after placing seventh being so sincere about the love that he received from the team and the PSU family and his priase of Cael and Company. Or Bo Nickel still working out with the club and the profound mutual respect he and Cael have for one another. And there are numerous others I could quote. Keep hoping and praying for your Armstrong moment. I doubt it's coming.1 point

Serious question, when was the last season eight schools had a champ?1 point

You are saying smaller programs will get cut because they can't win the NCAA? A kid who transfers away from a smaller program rarely has a negative financial impact on the program he is leaving. Programs typically get cut for political reasons---take Eastern Michigan, for example. They were self-funded mostly from a former wrestler who set up an endowment---and the cut the program so they could also cut a couple women's programs (insert Title IX) and be able to build a new practice facility for their football team. I would agree with you that the NIL has an impact, but I suggest that has a greater impact on the larger revenue sports like Basketball and Football, than it does on wrestling, which generates little to nothing to a school's athletic budget. Just my view from the cheap seats......1 point

People did, they just were not the Iowa people. And likely Oklahoma St. before that.1 point

I think @Husker_Du has made it publicly known that he and Cael go way back and competed at Reno at the same time while in HS. They are contemporaries of the same generation. Tom Brands is not. This seems a much simpler explanation as to why Cael and Willie might be able to better relate to one another than Tom and Willie. I doubt Cael kisses Willie's ass, vice versa, or either would even like the other if that's what they believed the other one was doing.1 point

OTTs in Vegas. Or better yet, Seattle!! As you probably know, Seattle is just starving for wrestling action. mspart1 point

4 point shot would be from half court or something? As far as going to 3 point takedowns, I'm not sure I like that. The riding time change is good in my opinion. 3 point near fall is also a good change. I don't like the 4 point near fall. But I'm a codger and like the old ways. I'm still not sure how I feel about 2 point takedown for freestyle. I also don't like unlimited ankle lace scoring. But there you go. mspart1 point

I've been doing audience and consumer research for about 30 years. Cord cutting is definitely a factor in Nielsen's viewing estimates, which both do and do not streaming content depending on the source and how we're calculating audience data. But, neither would account for this large of a year over year audience drop. IMO, stars and stories mattered more. Do not underestimate the lack of crossover stars in this year's tournament. Yianni D. is not Gable Steveson, and four titles may be really cool to we wrestlers but is not as unique as it was for either Dake or Cael. Plus, don't underestimate the impact of other programming on this year's audience ratings. The first weekend of the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament was absolutely wild - ironic that all of those upsets led to lower ratings for the Final 4 and championship game given the lack of blue bloods at the end - or the impact of a generational talent (Caitlin Clark) playing in the women's tournament. At the end of the day, casual fans had a lot of intriguing viewing options that weekend. Moving the tournament to April - I'm intrigued by the unique place the Frozen Four has between March Madness and the start of the NBA and NHL Playoffs - may be helpful for audience ratings. As for me, I was at my son's district swimming championships and didn't watch a match either Day 2 or 3 of the tournament. Life gets in the way. I'm torn between wanting to throw the book at the kid and giving him a chance for redemption. If my own son got assaulted like that, I would be livid. If my own son threw that punch, I would be livid, but would want a chance for him to own the consequences and work through an improvement process that would lead to changed behavior, ultimately leading to an earned second chance.1 point
