Your interpretation looks correct but my goodness given the way the NCAA writes these I'd think any good coach/program would run this by their compliance officer for clarification before committing any Fr in the competition. Believe Bill's reply to Hilliary when asked if he was dating Monica was: "depends on what the definition of 'date' is." Think same applies here. If you want further clarification, add a question to the Burwikk thread, I'm sure it'll be resolved in another 20 pages.2 points

Getting home from Leavenworth WA alive through a snow storm and the mountain pass closing just after we went through, and I mean just after. On the other side they were already closing it down. It was a gift to get home in one piece without any car damage or people damage. mspart2 points

As much as I appreciate the hour-by-hour updates on the Burwikk situation, could we edit the thread to spell his name correctly, or has this reached the significance of a Stevenson/Carl type of purposeful misspelling?2 points

Given that our life experiences differ, our interpretations of words for high-order abstractions differ, and related discussion is meaningless. You will receive ten different answers from ten different people about what pictures come to mind when they hear the terms wokeism, fascism, capitalism, liberty, idealism, and so on. This explains why what we hear is what we prefer to hear, which is that the other is an imbecile, a malcontent, an enemy to the country, and otherwise no good person. Time is saved to reach meaningful conversations on high-order abstractions by starting with things to which one can point, simple things with simple words, ascending the abstraction ladder gingerly, and pausing for frequent checks. The Tyranny of Words was a Christmas present this year. I have read half the book and find it impressive how relevant the material is for discussion today. There are more than two movies playing simultaneously in the same theatre.1 point

I finally got around to estimating bonus points. Emphasis on estimating. I found the final team scores from 2013 - 2022 on the Penn State Wrestling Club website. I joined those with my team by team estimates of advancement points and actual placement points to come up with a team by team, year by year estimate of how many bonus points were scored. Because my advancement points are only estimated I wound up with a handful of negative bonus point situations. I used a very sophisticated method of changing my estimated advancement so that bonus was no longer negative (aka The Torture the Numbers Until They Speak Principal). Most of these "corrections/re-estimations" were 0.5 points with the occasional full point or point and a half. Because any individual entry might be off a tad I will stick with summary level data.1 point

I found this. too. Based on this it looks like the Collegiate Duals are considered a single date of competition. 17.28.5.1.1 Multiple-Day Competition and Dual Meets Within Three Consecutive Days. On not more than two occasions, an institution may count a multiple-day competition or two consecutive dual meets as one date of competition, if the following requirements are met: (Adopted: 6/20/11, Revised: 5/1/19 effective 8/1/19) (a) The multiple-day competition or two consecutive dual meets occur within three consecutive days; and (b) The institution participates in not more than one multiple-day event or not more than two dual meets during the three consecutive days. Whiskey and some books The Tyranny of Words by Stuart Chase (1938) Range by David Epstein (2019) Funky by Ben Askren (2022)1 point

They were at least more well rounded than Askren was. His ability to take down and control his opponents allowed him to hide his deficiencies, which he never felt the need to improve on. He was certainly past his prime when he finally got a shot in the UFC, but that knee would have caught him regardless. Even a past prime Lawler was able to hurt him pretty good. I believe he would have been a contender in the UFC, but the higher level competition would have been able to expose his deficiencies, so it's hard to say whether he was better or not. Yeah, that's par for the course. I'm excited to see him give MMA a go. I was 2-0 in HS against a future UFC fighter, but if he punched me in the face I'd fold like a cheap suit.1 point

Lol. Central Russia isn't exactly Aruba in winter either. He had 13+ kids, so apparently he found some indoor activities to his liking.1 point

The Collegiate duals counted as 1 event. Meaning it only cost freshmen 1 of 5. Lotta layers to this new rule.1 point

A little Trivia In 2013 Northwestern scored 32.5 team points without scoring a single bonus point. That is the highest team score with zero bonus points in my sample. From 2017 - 2022 no team with zero bonus points scored double digit team points. 2017 PSU edges 2018 Iowa 32.5 to 30.5 for most bonus points in the period. PSU had 5 MD, 9 1.5 TF, and 7 Pinfalls. Iowa had 6 MD, 3 1.5 TF, and 10 Pinfalls.1 point

Askren, in my opinion, was just as good or better at mma than Chandler and Woodley. Unfortunately when most get to see him was at the end of his career in the ufc where he was hampered by a serious hip injury. That injury made him just a shell of himself. In his prime he would have been a formidable foe for just about anyone. He probably should have stayed retired and not fought in the ufc but he had a dream. A dream that was shattered by a knee to the face. Plus I’m sure he made a shit load of money1 point

Leo Tolstoy was never in Seattle in winter. The sun never shines here. mspart1 point

Yeah, it's tough to make an informed prediction on how he will transition to MMA. We have no knowledge of any training in striking or submission grappling. And while he was a better folkstyle wrestler than Chandler and Woodley, he has a very unconventional style that doesn't lend itself to MAA (if he leaves his face out there like he does his right leg in wrestling, it won't work out so well). Plus those two guys are/were better at MMA than they were are wrestling. Askren was a far better wrestler than all of them, but I would say Woodley and Chandler are/were better fighters than Askren. High level wrestling success doesn't seem to be any stronger of a predictor of MMA success than a solid wrestling background.1 point

Very true... it definitely has to be the right fit, just as any program has to be the right fit for the right coach. Sometimes bringing a mid range or lower tiered team to prominence or at least respectability, can afford that coach a lot of freedom and control. Sometimes that's hard to leave for a place where the board, boosters, etc.maintain the control and make sure the coach knows who is running the show. I get that the coach has people they answer to, but the freedom and control factor can definitely vary from program to program. I'm not on the "in" with OkState so I don't know if this is a factor or not in their next hiring, whenever that will be. Others more in tune with the backstage workings of their program can probably discuss that aspect.1 point

What about some of the other things to consider about the Okie State job? It is in Stillwater and that is no where near as nice as Corvallis, Oregon. Sure Okie State has the resources, fan support, and etc....but remember that there are guys out there like Kolat that didn't want a big school and wanted a small quiet community, and yes he said that years before moving to the Naval Academy.1 point

Yeah I got you @Idaho. I’m not sure if @H82Losewas even talking about the traditional Power 5 though which isn’t really relevant to wrestling? Maybe was trying to designate the “Power 5” as being the top 5 wrestling schools or something?1 point

Not that anyone cares, as I realize this has been beat to death already, but here's my handful of thoughts on the topic. Its sort of a mixed verdict. 1. Wisconsin/Bono's public statements on the topic are misleading -- at best. Wisconsin is being disingenuous when its athletics department issues a statement saying they are actively working with the Nebraska to support his "immediate eligibility," and when Coach Bono sends out a tweet suggesting that the NPO option isn't available. The original statement had a grain of truth insofar as they supported his appeal to the NCAA based on lack of awareness of the deadline, but implies support of his NPO efforts which is untrue. And Bono's tweet was straight up untrue. 2. Wisconsin's hesitance to sign the NPO form is defensible. My annoyance with Wisconsin's duplicity notwithstanding, I don't think its fair to criticize Wisconsin for not signing the NPO, since Wisconsin would have to certify Burwick "was no longer given an opportunity to participate." Though I can see why a lay person might think that it "counts" that Burwick was recruited over and lost his starting spot, that's not what those terms actually mean, according to NCAA definitions. Per NCAA by-law 14.02.9, "participate" means the "student-athlete either practices in a sport (see Bylaw 17.02.1) or competes in a sport, as defined in Bylaw 17.02.8," (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/bylawView?id=8787), and those latter definitions make clear that they have nothing to do with whether you're a starter or on scholarship. If I were Wisconsin's GC, I wouldn't let them sign the form as-is (without explanation). 3. Manning isn't helping. I get his passion to defend a student-athlete, but saying the "statement they put out was the biggest fraud I’ve ever seen,” as quoted in Hamilton's article on Flo, is definitely not the right approach. Yes, its misleading, but it has enough truth to not be called "fraud," and that sort of accusation is counterproductive. (From the Flo interview, I think Manning realizes he sort of stepped in it.) 4. Wisconsin should sign the form with explanation. What I would advise Wisconsin to do if they asked me is to sign the form, and to check the box saying he didn't have an opportunity to participate, but to put an asterisk by the latter box -- and to add an explanatory sentence or two at the bottom. Say Burwick wasn't forbidden from being on the team but did have his spot jeopardized by a transfer student brought at his weight without his knowledge, after the transfer deadline -- and that Wisconsin supports him not losing his eligibility. That's honest, and if the NCAA still says no, that's on them, not Wisconsin. Anyone who still criticizes Wisconsin after that (e.g. saying that they shouldn't had given the explanation/asterisk) is basically saying Wisconsin is morally obliged to lie to the NCAA -- and I'm sorry, but F anyone who says that. 5. The NCAA rule needs to change. If an athlete wants to transfer to a new school after a given deadline, and the original school has zero objection to their doing so, they ought not lose a year of eligibility. Period. I'm fine with the NCAA requiring the original school's consent if the transfer is after a certain deadline, but who is the NCAA to forbid the original school from granting consent? The idea that the NCAA should be telling athletes they lose a year of eligibility even when both schools consent is preposterous.1 point

Oregon State's not a Power 5 school....that's funny. But anyway....Did I say it was a better job or did I say it's not the best job for everyone in a previous post? Did I say it was a better job, or did I say "we shall see" which is also absolutely true since it's all hypothetical and John Smith is the head coach, and Pendleton is let's say, busy the next number of years. I will say this again, it was fun to finish ahead of OK State last year in Pendleton's second year... is that what you're worked up about?1 point

What it shows is that 159-0 will likely never be duplicated. One reason is you likely won't ever see a guy wrestle 159 NCAA matches again. The other is it is almost impossible to not have an off day, get caught by something, or someone just being better that day. Most would agree that Spencer Lee has been one of if not the most dominant wrestler in recent years and he has 5 losses. It is truly amazing to go your entire career without losing. It is hard enough to do it for a season.1 point

Ok Partners.... we shall see.... Regardless it was fun for him to finish above OK State in his second year as head coach at OSU.1 point

I could be wrong, and it was years ago, but I feel that because I had already done enough to graduate in the spring, that I didn't even need to be a full time student in my final semester. I ended up taking a full load and picked up a minor, but I think I was told that I could have taken minimal credits and still wrestled.1 point

"You are all misleading one another, and are yourselves deceived. The sun does not go round the earth, but the earth goes round the sun, revolving as it goes, and turning towards the sun in the course of each twenty-four hours, not only Japan, and the Philippines, and Sumatra where we now are, but Africa, and Europe, and America, and many lands besides. The sun does not shine for some one mountain, or for some one island, or for some one sea, nor even for one earth alone, but for other planets as well as our earth. If you would only look up at the heavens, instead of at the ground beneath your own feet, you might all understand this, and would then no longer suppose that the sun shines for you, or for your country alone." — Leo Tolstoy Eleven Stories1 point

• The prevailing word is that John is done at the end of the season. There was a lot of speculation that he was waiting for Tulsa's NCAAs before retiring. Of course there were a lot of other theories over the years. But right now, all indications are that he's done at the end of the year. • The advent/development of the portal is not a deterrent to the OK State job; it's an asset. OKST will be hunters for transfers, not the hunted.1 point

Is there a mystery tag team partner they bring out in a cage with big sheet over it, not to be revealed until the actual firing happens? If so, I will buy the PPV.1 point

Not an OSU fan, but John Smith WILL NEVER be forced out, he will leave when he wants. Next, If and when he does leave, what has Coleman Scott done to deserve the OSU job? Whoever said Henson, come on. Pop would be a good fit, but to someone else's point, he has a pretty good thing going on where he is at.1 point

Appreciate the optimism that we are gonna witness history , but spencer has wrestled twice maybe in 12 months and yianni already lost one match and went to OT in another and seems like he’s over the whole college/ folk style thing , I believe that if yianni didn’t have a chance at being a 4xer he wouldn’t have even come back this year combine that with a very hungry and pretty deep weight guess we ll see how it goes ….. fun fact about Dan hodge sometime in the early 80s he ran into a group of recon marines in a bar/ restaurant type place while on vacation , a few of the guys wrestled themselves, so they knew who he was and went and talked to him , shook his hand, but the biggest of the group was a guy about 6’4 270 pounds , he instantly challenged hodge to a wrestling match , hodge laughed it off and said no but the guy persisted and eventually later on hodge agrees but tells the guy he’s not going to hold back , long story short they wrestled for about 10 seconds and hodge doubled him so hard the guy chipped his elbow on the ground and broke 2 ribs and instantly gave up , add insult to injury the big guy got disciplined by the marines for what they considered an injury sustained in a bar fight1 point
