  1. Unfortunately I couldn't beat a guy named Cael Sanderson. Lost to him in the 1991 Western Regional freestyle final (Boise, Idaho). Lost to him again at the NCAA tournament in 2001. The only solace is that he apparently beat everyone he wrestled.

  2. ^^^ so, since we're talking famous people, I beat the $hit out of Mario Lopez (Saved by the Bell) at J Robinson's Intensive Wrestling Camp when we were in high school. He's aged better, still all buff, rich, and his wife is way hotter than mine- he's probably still having sex. So who really won?

  3. 1983 vs 3-time national champ. I didn't AA the year before, my current record was 2-0 at beginning of the season and he was already 8-0, so he was more fit. I took him down right away, but he escaped and took me down...then I escaped and took him down again. It was a long match, with constant motion and with many restarts as we scrambled and ended up OB. After about 12 minutes, I looked at the clock, 20 seconds left in 3rd and I was ahead 13-12. I started running and got a quick stall call. With 8 seconds left he shot and I sprawled, and back-pedaled, he reshot and got a fingernail on my shoelace as I dove out of bounds, but he took me down at the edge of the mat to win, 14-13. Most fun I had in a match and didn't feel like a loss at all.

  4. This defined my struggles in both high school and college. In terms of impact on wrestling style and body types, that was the biggest weight adjustment. 4th - 90 5th - 110 6th - 126 7th - 150 8th through 10th - 160 11th - 171 12th - 189 College 184, 174, 174, 184 Weight cuts made college not fun. Pulling to 174 from 200+ took an awful lot of enjoyment out of the sport. But when dudes at 184 are pulling from 220, what can you do?

  5. Friendly alumni grudge match a few years after graduation being refereed by the captain of the current team. Format was adjusted for a water/lung break between periods. The vegas line was not in my favor. No score from neutral in first. I lost the toss. He chose top in the 2nd and I managed an escape. Up 1 heading to the third. The rules had changed (unbeknownst to opponent) such that I had choice in the third and took down. He could not believe it and may have lost his poise. I pulled out the win with years of bragging rights!

  6. Jeff Prescott - 2x NCAA champ. It was at a youth/JH tournament. I remember being confident and looking at him thinking I would be the bigger, stronger guy. The whistle blew and he was so fast I didn’t know what happened. When it was over he wasn’t even breathing hard. I am not even sure he had to make contact with me.

  10. I dont hold his words from last year against him now. At that point we had a potential trophy team coming back, still had Sunkist, still had top recruits lined up and still had Martoris support outside of Sunkist. Sure the injuries sucked this year but now we are seeing what the lack of a RTC and the other support has the program looking. Richie deserves the opportunity to go somewhere are finish his career with good training partners, facilities and maybe a different approach to wrestling. Until something changes ASU is not going to hold on to top level wrestlers their entire career anymore

  11. It was 2X AA (4th,2nd) Scott Puzia for College of New Jersey ( formerly Trenton State.) It was right after my junior season @ Morristown, wrestling in an open tournament @ Union College. Wrestled @ 118 and wound up wrestling the #1 seed... Scott Puzia. Scott was a product of Roxbury HS wrestling program (the HS where my nephew would eventually wrestled at in that distant future.) He pinned me (I don't know if I eventually made it to the 2nd period... he just overwhelmed me.) That tournament wasn't a double elimination... you had to make it to the semis for placement. It was One & Done for yours truly. Fast forward to December 2014 and the Dover Christmas tournament... my nephew RJ, now wrestling @ Roxbury was the #1 seed at 145. I left my brother and sister-in-law in the bleachers while I stepped out into the hallway to look at the brackets on the wall. As I was looking at RJ's bracket and seeing who he had next, someone next to me said something along the lines, you got a good one there, Dave. I turned to my left... It was Scott Puzia himself. He was two classes ahead of me, but looked like he could go a few starts right now. I couldn't believe he remembered me after all these years! We talked for approx. 10-15 mins. It was all good. Small world, eh? D3

  12. It was 1910, on our family's homestead, when my father suddenly died of a heart attack under the oak in our front yard. The very next day a lightning bolt hit that same oak and spilt it in two. I took the wood from that Oak and made myself a bat. By the time I was 6 years old I could hit home runs off the High School pitchers in the area. At 12 a scout came to my town and told me I was the best he had ever seen. Packed my bags, boarded a train, and headed for NY to try out for the Yankees. On my travels I met a widow who seemed quite fond of me. Boy did I misread that. She came in to my sleeper car and put a bullet in my torso. Gasping for my last breath she revealed that she was a sorceress and would spare my life but only if I agreed to take the shape of a waste container and work the local carnivals in the midwest. Being young and foolish I agreed. Looking back I should've taken my chances with the netherworld. So yes, you can say I not only lost but I lost bigly

  24. HS - 114, 128, 140, 147 College 157, 167, 167, 157. Cut was brutal to 157 senior year in college. I was doing good until the cutting wore me out and had a catastrophic conference tournament. I went to 200 lbs by the summertime, more muscle than fat as I stopped running focused on lifting. 35 years later still 205ish, not as much muscle though

  25. In youth wrestling the best (future career wise) to beat me was Robert Kokesh (3x SD state champ and 3x AA, 3-4-3 at NCAA's for Nebraska). The worst licking I ever took in youth wrestling was to Destin McCauley (ended up being a 6x state champ in Minnesota and a top HS recruit). The best wrestler that I faced in HS was Blake Stauffer (4th at NCAA's for ASU). I believe the score to our match was somewhere in the 10-3 range. I had a hard time getting away from him on bottom.

  32. Wrestling was more than just a sport to me—it was the bedrock of who I became. It gave me the mental and physical strength to face life’s challenges, to push through, and to carve out my place in the world. Without it, I might not have the same resilience, the same drive, or the same ability to handle adversity. It was a key part of my identity, and that’s something powerful to recognize.

  33. Various workouts (and no I never actually wrestled in a program). Bob Zaro 2xNJ Champ. Herb Campbell NJ champ eventual Lehigh co-captain. Pete Schuyler NCAA 3rd. Mark Lieberman (not really a workout- he just grabbed me one day and I somehow got out). He was stunned (he also wasn't trying). Darryl Burley.
