  2. I swear the Olympics bring out the worst and most arrogant of our fan base, the fact that it seems so many people thought we were going to just run through everyone bc the Russia team isn’t here is crazy just for starters …but the hate I’ve seen towards Parris, Dake, Zain and especially Brooks is embarrassing. This is the Olympics ,the pinnacle of the sport , you have the best guys from around the world living out something they ve been dreaming aboutand sacrificing for more then half their lives but that doesn’t stop the fat guy who never placed in districts from sitting on the couch and talking shit. ive seen about a dozen posts (about 6 from mineo) about how disappointing this Olympic run has been….we still have a chance at medaling 5 out of 6 in men’s freestyle (most likely 4) and we had 4 new guys on the team with no Olympic experience and barely any senior level experience and we re still doing pretty well I feel brooks has gotten the most crap but in reality he just graduated college , went to the Olympics and lost in the final second by 1 to the Olympic champ and came back and medaled and you think he went 0-2 BBQ

  3. I would say that many, me included, thought Dake was just as good as Burroughs, and I think we know that's not true. He's still awesome, but this does reaffirm the specialness of prime Burroughs.

  4. I think he did. he took his shoes off much faster, said a prayer, stood up and backed up a few steps giving Akgul center mat. At the end of the day its Lazarev's moment too; he shouldn't have to sacrifice his oppertunity to end his career on his own terms

  6. Burroughs was praising Snyder for not going all out in period 1, then after Kyle got two TDs near the end he was question Kyle first period tactics. Now Kennedy gets up 8-2 and he says she should let the fur fly. Blades attempts a TD and Burroughs claims "Well done" but Kurgistan counters and turns her within 5 seconds to make 8-6. Not his best color commentary.

  9. I just want to say. I don't post much, but I read everyday. I appreciate the knowledge I get from this site. I'm a huge wrestling fan. I wrestled in hs. My son wrestled in his. I coached kid wrestling. I helped coach middle school and hs. I'm and old guy. 67 years old. But again I really appreciate this site. We are a small community. I congratulate anybody who competes in this sport. They are all winners in my book. Did we have a disappointing Olympics? I don't think so. They all wrestled there best. That all you can ask for. Somebody has to win. Somebody has to lose. Thats wrestling! They are all winners at this level!

  10. First off the NCAA's sells out every year. (Attendance is not down, you are crazy). I've gone to 18 NCAA's it's an unbelievable experience. Freestyle is not ever going to be popular in US. The style is too judge mental. If we were Russia David Taylor would of been sent and he would of won gold. If we still had 10 weights Arujau wins gold for sure. We got out coached by Japan at 57 and 74, no other way to look at it. Sometimes you just can't be the best. I think we are a little crazy to always expect that we are.

  11. Yeah, you're just going to go back to the old rules that limited the action and scoring on the edge. One Olympics where we don't win a gold, but possibly medal at 5 of the 6 weights isn't a good reason to change College Wrestling to Freestyle. I also don't think NIL is going to cut the number of programs. I think the demise of the sport is greatly exaggerated, the dominance of a couple of teams is how College has always been, it's not new.

  12. 1. More competition between RTCs. The NLWC has all the best guys, but with so many on one team, are they able to provide enough time to each athlete to scout international competition? I’m hoping Taylor can do this with OSU. Ohio RTC needs a resurgence, and HWC should be more than a 57 kg machine. 2. More international competition early on. I think we need to incentivize our junior athletes to compete internationally to become more familiar with freestyle while they are developing. Junior worlds and U23 is not enough. The best NCAA guys should be entering senior international freestyle tournaments, and the RTCs should fund it. 3. Switch folkstyle to freestyle. NCAA wrestling has been declining in popularity for a decade. Ratings are down, attendance is not what it used to be. With NIL, we are about to lose more programs. Women’s NCAA wrestling is starting up and is freestyle. The men should be doing freestyle as well. And I’m also open to thinking there are answers beyond this. But yeah, the general attitude seems to be this was a great performance as a team, so I doubt anything happens.

  15. Great post. I think it's ok to show some frustration with this particular olympic team. It's ok to question our wrestlers strategy. Question if the coaches prepared them correctly. Constructive criticism is a positive not a negative. But, like you've pointed out the vitriol and hate towards our wrestlers has been absolute garbage.

  17. Yesterday didn't exactly go as we all wanted, but we still got plenty of wrestling left Kicking us off today is Zain Retherford at 65kg, Kyle Snyder at 97kg, and Kennedy Blades at WFS 76kg. First match on Mat A Kadi vs Salkazanov should be a good one!

  18. We don't know if Snyder is done yet. I think he'll go until he can't. At 28, it wouldn't be unusual for a guy his size to give it a go in 2028 We don't even know if Burroughs is done yet... It's a great generation of wrestlers. They've made it easy to be a fan. We've also had some promising performances from some age-group kids.

  19. I remember thinking in 2021 that the way he lost was going to haunt him. And then in 2024 he almost has it happen twice. That would have been torturous. Glad to see him finally get the Olympic gold.

  21. According to reports, when Geno was only 11, he was kidnapped by unknown men in South Ossetia — a conflict zone — and kept in a basement for three months. He was given just enough food and water to not die. At one point he was chained to a wall and beaten. When he released, he was hardly able to walk due to malnourishment and mistreatment. I can only imagine that coming out of something that horrible puts a sport into perspective. And yet, even with the bigger picture in mind, and even with the trauma he almost certainly carries with him to this day, he became an Olympic champ. Just an incredible story.

  23. I wrestled in an excellent club (many world team members, several Olympic and world medals) way back when. Times were different, but my excellent coach advocated for 20+ international matches per year. I think he actually may have said 30. Not sure our guys still need 30, but maybe a few more than zero? I recently listened to Kendall Cross talking about making the Olympic team in 92. He definitely thought our top guys hadn’t wrestled enough that year and all were flat in trials. He personally wrestled over 20 matches that year and upset world finalist Penrith (who may have had zero).

  29. Just in lifestyle is what I meant. Discipline is an intrical intrical part of their culture. What we think of here in America as someone have a rare level of self discipline, is pretty much the norm there. Discipline, routine, respect. Three huge pillars in the culture. It starts there.

  32. Let’s not forget, wrestling is hard. Half the bracket, at least, is medal contention. Yes we have increased our depth and number of elite athletes through the dream fund and RTC’s. But what wasn’t in place in 2000’s were all these satellites Soviet states fully grounded and operational. They were still getting their shit together and now many of those countries that used to be one litter the podium. What you also didn’t have in the 00’s is the level of free agency there is now these days, which has evolved into even more Russians in the bracket and on the podium. I mean at 86 you have a ‘liev” from Greece, and at 97 you have a “donov” from Bahrain. Those aren’t rare exceptions anymore. Americans, by nature, we have a very very high level of esteem for ourselves. As a whole, Americans wrestlers not collecting the medals we “expect” them to, does not mean they under performed. Others are training for gold too. People around the globe are putting all their focus into how…for one thing among many but is high on the list…how to beat the Americans. This shit is hard. That said, my description of Parris match was “a big strong athletic dude just learning how to wrestle”.

  33. Do yourself, and the sport of wrestling in this country, a big favor: block that douchebag. He is the wick to the TNT of everything you wrote, and a detriment to the idea of support wrestling.

  34. Agreed. I'm over the Zain/Yianni/N. Lee era. Hopefully, Alirez can do what they couldn't and actually improve as a freestyle wrestler.

  36. Rivera just tried to Folkstyle passing that ankle and gave up 2 doing it. Exposing your back with no penalties in scrambles, is one of our biggest things to overcome as we transition

  38. Zain loses 0-8. Great showing by Amouzad. I really don't understand Zain's gameplan there. He spent 95% of the match pushing Amouzad away and not tying up. Looked like he was worried about Amouzad's underhook, but Zain's a scrappy handfighter. He didn't put himself into a position where he could take a single committed shot the entire match. That's partly due to Amouzad's great positioning, but what I found puzzling was why Zain would try to remain at arm's length that entire match. He kept pushing off and keeping his distance.

  43. I'm just here to complain again about the people complaining about Spencer Lee. The same people who were his biggest fans 20 hours ago ripping him to shreds moments after the biggest loss of his life, one that he may very well only get ONE shot at ever doing, can kick rocks.

  44. I mean Artur Aleksanyan took his medal off immediately and didn’t get in any pictures after they got off the stand. Even left the mat early while they were taking pics. I want to make clear I am not stating any opinion on Spencer’s actions. Just pointing this out since you asked about other silver medalists.

  46. LOL...same here. But still, it was kinda...cute when the young Chinese girl did it. She took Bronze in one of the Olympic Gymnastic events...but she looked like a little girl, she kinda looks up at the two on the top of the podium and it looked endearing how she copied it. If I see Snyder or someone doing it...well, it's hard or it to be "cute" when it looks like balding(and shorter) Thor is biting the medal, ya know? ALL due respect to Snyder, he's a stud and I've been a huge fan since he was coming up, but it's just a very different look!
