Rivera and Sacultan are the 2 seeded guys there, with 2 to be drawn in, realistically they have no real chance of placing (I know Rivera upset Tevanyan before with a miracle but lets not forget they wrestled again) but man..... Whoever gets drawn into that quarter, talk about a gift. If its a top guy (Zain, Kiyooka, Akmataliev, heck even Tobier-Valdes) only having to pull off one "Difficult" win to be an Olympic Finalist... Nice. Hopefully it's Zain and he gets the winner of Gomez/Rivera second match. Wrestling for Bronze from there would be no cakewalk against Ochir/Tevanyan or random top notch draw-in but still. Drawing into the top half at all is a real gift. Sometimes I dislike that it's not more realistically seeded, but I do like the idea of encouraging athletes to be more active at ranking series events. Wish brackets were out already.2 points

The Mighty Dukes of JMU had 2 All-Americans total before the program dropped. Both were unseeded. Brian Kurlander finished 8th in '87 (beat the 8 seed and 9 seed to make quarters then beat 10 seed in blood round), Mike Coyle placed 8th in 2000 (little easier road by seed, beat 6 and 12 on the backside on way to AA).2 points

Those dudes have an insane combination of strength, flexibility, balance and grit. They are very impressive to watch. I have to think many of these guys would make great wrestlers.1 point

The talk about Boise State in the UVU thread got me thinking about the unseeded era* wrestlers who said to hell with the seeds, I got this. Who were the unseeded wrestlers to go undefeated at the NCAA Tournament? I am glad you asked. There were nine of these titans of optimism and over-achievement, starting with Oklahoma's David McGuire in 1967 and ending with Oklahoma State's Mark Branch in 1994. These wrestlers were all participating in 8 and 12 seed tournaments. The 16 seed era was very short, lasting only five years, and did not produce any unseeded champions. The "We Don't Need No Stinkin' Badges" (or Seeds) Banditos: But what of the teams? Which teams consistently produced from the unseeded portion of the bracket? We can answer the question at least two ways. Based on sheer volume, Oklahoma put a whopping 30 wrestlers on the podium without the benefit of a seed. Iowa State, Iowa and Oklahoma State round out our top four. But they are also four of the programs with the most wrestlers in the tournament (sorry PSU fans, but they just failed at putting US on the podium. I blame Cael Sanderson in spite of the obvious objection). The Seeds Don't Matter Schools: The other (better?) way to look at this is based on rate. How often did a school/coach get their guys over the psychological hump of being told you do not deserve a seed? The Han Solo "Never Tell Me The Odds" Schools: How fitting that a faith-based school sits atop the list. Maybe I should rename it The George Michael "You Gotta Have Faith" Schools? * I am defining the unseeded era as 1967 - 2018. In 1967 we had 8 seeded wrestlers for the first time and in 2018 we had unseeded wrestlers for the last time.1 point

My only counterpoint is if they wanted to have wrestler be more active at ranking series events, they would spread them around instead of having several in eastern Europe. What I think they actually want is to have them in their home country along with a rule that encourages attendance.1 point

Came across this: https://www.mmafighting.com/2024/8/1/24210841/olympic-gold-medalist-david-taylor-explains-decision-retire-competition-after-missing-out-2024-games From the article: “I’ve always said I would compete as long as I had the fire,” Taylor told MMA Fighting. “This year, that fire started to just kind of go away. I’ve achieved everything I wanted to achieve in my career. You start off and you want to be a good wrestler, then you set your goals — and I had the highest goal of being an Olympic gold medalist. Being a national champion, being a world champion, being an Olympic gold medalist, it’s hard to continue to recreate that fire every single year. I was 33 years old. I had achieved everything I wanted to achieve. I got a young family, so this year was a challenge to find that fire everyday.”1 point

Ultimately, this is an attempt to radically change what we understand to be a woman. You can be born a woman with female genitalia, uterus, etc..., live your whole life a woman, but suddenly you're not a woman because you have a genetic disorder. Yes, it provides an advantage, but these are not "men." The advantage is not even close to that of a man over a woman. These women would get destroyed by men. So is it "fair" that they have high testosterone? No, but it's also not fair that Tyreek Hill runs a 4.2 40 because of his genetics. No matter how hard I work, I will never be able to run that fast. That's just sports.1 point

They actually studied this back in the 90s with widespread genetic testing of olympic athletes. Female olympians were 100x more likely to have a Y chromosome than the regular population.1 point

It's horrible what some influencers--like Musk--have done to her. Khelif was born a woman, intersexual (what used to be called hermaphrodite). She has identified as a woman her whole life, and her birth certificate lists her as female. Algeria wouldn't let her represent the country if she were trans, as that's illegal there. Khelif has worked hard to get to this point, and deserves respect.1 point

Bernard has this one right. She has never had any issues with testing before or after the one match with a Russian where they won’t say anything about the “test” they ran to besides it wasn’t testosterone. The testing organization, whose head is Russian, is so corrupt that the IOC banned them and is running the boxing tournament themselves. It shouldn’t be getting any more press because it’s completely false.1 point

Yes it is. It doesn’t matter what you want, you are what you are. You won’t ever know what it feels like to be the opposite sex of what you were born no matter what you do. The most compassionate thing to do is to tell the truth.1 point

Wow! That escalated quickly. It’s sad that there can’t be understanding on both sides. If you are the one crying that there’s too much hate, start the change with yourself. Try to understand people with a different perspective than you. Some people saw a headline or a meme and believed that a biological male was physically beating a woman. I’d hope everyone would be upset if that was the case. Now I wish people didn’t jump to conclusions without knowing all the details, but if you consider what people believe, it’s easier to be understanding. Maybe they aren’t a bad person… maybe they just don’t know the truth. In this instance, it seems like no one really knows the whole truth yet so it’s best to be understanding on both sides1 point
-
You sure? It just sounds like you hate someone who has a different opinion than you do. As deplorable as it is to be racist or a bigot, it’s still just a person’s opinion, nothing more nothing less, and wishing death on somebody else does not help your cause. Keep fighting the good fight, but do it differently if you want people to actually pay attention and listen to your opinion.1 point

So what I can gather from the interwebs, so obviously not 100% for certain, is that the person in question does in fact have XY chromosomes; however, was born with female bits down there. Seems like an extremely rare genetic disorder. Which makes this one pretty complicated. And in the case of female boxing the genetic disorder may in fact help. By the way, people throwing out the "see...there are more than two gender" B.S., this extremely rare genetic defect does not prove there are more than two genders...it proves there can be genetic defects.1 point

Former Boise State wrestler Andrew Hochstrasser as an assistant wrestling coach. Hochstrasser was a teammate of Utah Valley's head wrestling coach when they were both competing for Boise State and he was also a three-time NCAA qualifier and a two-time NCAA All-American (2nd in 2011 and 4th in 2009). https://gouvu.com/sports/wrestling/roster/coaches/andrew-hochstrasser/24111 point

My son is about to turn 5 and loves doing gymnastics. I swore to myself I’m not going to be a crazy wrestling Dad that puts pressure on him to do wrestling. He’ll pursue what he wants. But part of me hopes he develops all that core strength, flexibility etc in gymnastics and then starts wrestling. I can’t think of a better base foundation for wrestling.1 point

Ummm...biologically speaking that is exactly what females are made for. Females produce only so many eggs in their lifetime and they are meant to be fertilized...again, biologically speaking. We, as other animals, are built to reproduce to ensure the continuance of the species. Most animals live their life around the mating season when the females produce the eggs. Males also produce billions of sperm and that sperm is meant to be spread across many females...again, biologically speaking. Obviously, the human species has evolved and created different societal norms around this but biologically speaking we are truly built for the purpose of reproducing.1 point

They lost 2x state champ Nakoa Fouret (brother of Kekana at Oregon State) who is now at Clackamas. THey also gained Jake Castagneto who I believe was originally committed to NDSU, Hudson Rogers who was originally an Oregon State commit, Talen Eck who I believe was also committed elsewhere and NJCAA runner up Bridger Ricks from Western Wyoming. Hall has done a good job in a short time of getting a few guys into the room. The next recruiting cycle should be a good one for him. There is some good talent coming up in Utah.1 point

There are things to criticize with any coaching staff outside of State College, but you invalidate your own criticism when your starting place is "they can't coach." It's a ridiculous statement that doesn't even really merit a rebuttal, but because you've annoyed me I'll do it anyway. The "getting off bottom" criticism had some merit a few years ago but has largely been corrected. I think that can definitely be attributed to a lack of focus on that area historically which was definitely worthy of examination. Front head or head under I don't know where you're getting that. There are a number of wrestlers in their lineup that score frequently from both positions. Mat returns I'm assuming you just threw in their because you needed a third example and you picked it out of a hat. Tomasello went 1-3-3-3 with losses to Gilman, Clark, and Lee at NCAA's. Wrestled a great tournament his freshman year but was lucky to have Moisey in the finals. Martin had an all-time run as a true freshman to win it from the 11 seed, but only faced the 6 seed and three unseeded opponents until he knocked off an over-zealous Nickal in that final. He improved every single year thereafter. Bo Jordan was hampered massively in the back half of his career by injuries, and dealt with an unplanned launch into fatherhood while still in college. Your criticism is lazy, and if you really want to criticize Ohio State you're not even picking the right examples. You also completely ignore the many many positive examples that support an argument that not only can TR and staff coach, but they can coach quite well.1 point
-
What other coaching staff had a wrestler win an Olympic gold medal while still enrolled in their respective university? Cael? No. Smith?. No Brands? No Ryan? Yes Ohio State is the only program that would have allowed Snyder to focus on freestyle. Which lead to him being the youngest Olympic champion.1 point

Now that is a brilliant comment - A high school kid going into his junior year who has already beaten 4X AA and NC Anthony Ashnault in competition has a ceiling of low AA. This is an truly example of what the word inconceivable is suppose to be used for.1 point
