I watched this topnotch documentary on youtube yesterday and wanted to share. Curran Jacobs (MSU wrestler and catch world champion) has put together a documentary on the history of catch-as-catch-can wrestling along with Mike Chapman (WIN Magazine, creator of the Hodge Trophy, 5x National Wrestling Writer of the Year) that is absolutely fascinating. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Learn about guys like Billy Riley, Karl Gotch, Frank Gotch, Farmer Burns, and many more. Watch Terry Brands volunteer to get his tibia broken with a toe hold in front of the Gable statue. See the passion Dan Gable and others have for the history of the sport. It is an hour and seventeen minutes well spent. To paraphrase Mike Chapman, get hooked on catch.3 points

I am excited to see both Frost brothers in the lineup. I am curious if Swiderski actually redshirts or upsizes to a heavier splitter for chopping wood and goes 165lbs based purely on his impatient nature.2 points

How many innocent German and Japanese civilians were required before their respective countries acquiesced? 1.1-3.7 million Germans, and 500k to 1 million Japanese is the answer you are looking for. https://www.nationalww2museum.org/students-teachers/student-resources/research-starters/research-starters-worldwide-deaths-world-war Was winning WWII more important for us than beating Hamas into submission is for Israel? When Hamas crowds themselves with civilians, then you have to expect there will be civilian casualties. You want zero civilian casualties and that is not how war works. Period. Ghengis Kahn didn't work that way. Atilla the Hun didn't work that way. Caesar didn't work that way. Alexander didn't work that way. Hamas doesn't work that way. To get to unconditional surrender with Hamas, you have to blow them all away or get close enough that they unconditionally surrender. They use civilians as shields. Some will perish. War is hell as was previously said. Hamas has the power to stop this. But they don't and continue to put innocent or not so innocent civilians in danger as human shields so they can get folks like you to say this is unconscionable. It is calculated on their part. Again, they take no responsibility for civilians, that is the job for the UN. https://cis.org/Rush/Hamas-Official-Protecting-Civilians-Gaza-UN-Refugee-Agencies-Funded-US Interviewer: Many people are asking, since you have built 500 km of tunnels, why haven’t you built bomb shelters where civilians can hide during bombardments? Mousa Abu Marzouk (Hamas Political Bureau): We built the tunnels because we have no other way of protecting ourselves from being targeted and killed. These tunnels are meant to protect us [Hamas members] from the airplanes. We are fighting from inside the tunnels. As for the Gaza strip, you know and everybody knows that 75% of the people in the Gaza strip are refugees. And refugees are the responsibility of the United Nations to protect them. I have been saying this and did not make it up. Hamas takes no responsibility for the safety of the Gazans. Yet they are the governing entity of Gaza. Doesn't that strike you as somewhat incongruous? Shouldn't your ire be more directed at Hamas than at Israel? On Oct 7, Hamas counted on Israel retaliating and putting the Gazan people in danger of famine, homelessness, refugee-ism etc. They counted on that so that people get their undies in a bunch. That was their calculus. They are playing these people. These people are jokes and marionettes to Hamas. They are pulling the strings and these people parrot the talking points they want them to. I wonder how feels to be played by Hamas? Because I can see this from thousands of miles away. People should be angry at Hamas for putting the Gazans in this position, that's who they should be angry at. Is it acceptable for Hamas to put 45 lives in danger to save one Hamas soldier or die with that one Hamas soldier? That is what your question really should be. mspart2 points

I think there is a pretty evident correlation between small guys that get bigger later in life and have more success as a result of having the technique and footwork of a smaller guy while holding on to some of that speed, and I believe that is evident not just in wrestling but in other sports. A lot of times heavier guys get away with worse technique because of strength or their opponent being slower and despite getting a bit faster as they lose the size its rarely to the same degree as the guy who has been smaller most of their life. Thinking of the best heavyweights today they were all smaller at one point or another. This is part of the reason I am so high on Dreshaun ross he has a build like Greg but maybe an even larger frame and more explosive at a younger age. I think Christian Carroll may end up being an exception to everything I just said though.2 points

The new rules are really going to stress test athletic depts' commitment to their Olympic & non-revenue sports, even in the Big Ten. Would Nebraska, Maryland, Michigan State cut wrestling to maintain a roster cap or pay higher salaries in football and basketball? Those sports are a big deal at those schools and they'll have to find the money somehow. They're getting a huge chunk of media money, but they'll have to reinvest it to keep up in the college FB/BB arms race esp with USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington in the mix, none which sponsors wrestling. I can foresee a separation of haves and have-nots even within the Big Ten and SEC. Like NIL, the new pay for play rules will be the wild west if it's just unleashed without a well-defined framework for it to work. I can foresee the formation of players unions ramping up quickly so athletes can negotiate and leverage salaries like the pros do, and maybe some friction with right to work and at-will employment in some states. Conversely, pay for play can trigger ruthless practices from athletic departments. If an athlete doesn't perform up to expectations or violates a rule, could they be "fired" on the spot, mid-semester? Will they be quick to dismiss student athletes who break rules (like the recent gambling case) and generate bad PR for the institution, like corporations do? Lots of details to be worked out, but it feels like a huge can of worms.1 point

Im expecting Frost to be better next year he made crazy jumps from year 1 to 2 I think it is a pretty solidified top 5 to me Crookham,Bailey,Ragusin,Shawver,Frost. Yarbrough exploited nagaos inability to defend leg attacks but overall his season was not very impressive and Orine has kind of been the same guy the last two years. Wells will likely improve a ton as only a true freshman I would probably put them in that 6-8 range with McGonagle,Nagao and throw Hughes in there as well.1 point

Having lived in France for a while and knowing the culture of it, I'm fine with it for a France-hosted Olympics as a nod to the local culture. It's just another way of showing incredible athleticism through choreographed movements according to specific judging standards--no different from gymnastics, figure skating, bmx street, snowboard halfpipe, etc. It's just one we haven't been exposed to as a bona fide sport.1 point

But did they protest the civilians? That's my point. Did anyone protest the Syrian civilians. Has anyone protested the Ukrainian civilians? Not with near the ferocity of the Gazan civilians. If you can't see that Israel does more than anyone else to minimize civilian casualties, then you are unwilling to see truth. If that is the case, I will agree to disagree with you on this subject. mspart1 point

Well now you are changing your story. Earlier you quoted him saying: “We’re looking at that and I’m going to have a policy on that very shortly,” but now you are saying he is actually putting out a policy regarding restriction. That's not what you quoted. Every candidate is looking into policy. He said he'd have a policy shortly didn't say which way it would go, unless of course you misquoted him. But we all know Orange Man always lies so ...1 point

Great analogy. But I prefer the T-bone. I wrestled up through college. Then I coached Folkstyle for about 15 years. I really like the neutral, the top and bottom wrestling in folkstyle. In college it was 2-3-3 periods . Overtime was a full 1-1-1. Conditioning was extremely important. If still tied unfortunately it was decided by a referee's decision .1 point

Again, Hamas, the puppeteer, is pulling strings. War is war. People die. You cannot honestly say any country has done more to minimize casualties than Israel. No country has done as much to avoid civilian casualties. But war is killing people and some will be civilians. https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/costs/human/civilians/iraqi The US killed 281-315K civilians in Iraq. https://www.newarab.com/news/syria-war-death-toll-over-507000-13-years Syria's war has killed more than 507,000 people, a war monitor said Thursday ahead of the 13th anniversary of the conflict which has displaced millions at home and abroad. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1293409/civilian-deaths-related-to-russia-ukraine-conflict/ As of February 15, 2024, 10,582 civilians were reported to have been killed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine Is anyone concerned about these civilians who have died like for the outcry for Gazans? Nope, didn't think so. mspart1 point

OK, that article was updated May 21, 2024. On May 22, 2024, the following was reported. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/facing-backlash-trump-walks-back-comments-restricting-contraceptives/story?id=110464898 The former president quickly took to social media to clarify his position, claiming that he was not advocating for restrictions on contraceptives. "I HAVE NEVER, AND WILL NEVER ADVOCATE IMPOSING RESTRICTIONS ON BIRTH CONTROL, or other contraceptives," he posted on his social media platform. So now you get to choose what to believe. mspart1 point

7 Teams sound about par for College D1 wrestling. There has only been 15 D1 College Football National Championship teams in 30 years. And thats with a lot more D1 schools having football than wrestling programs. Here are the last 30 years of D1 Football N. Champs. Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Ohio St., Florida St., Auburn, Florida, Texas, USC, Miami, OU, Tenn, Michigan and Nebraska.1 point

Well I went to the Billy Joel concert with my wife. Jason Bonham with his Led Zeppelin Experience (he is the son of LZ's drummer John Bonham and an excellent drummer in his own right). I was more excited about them than Billy Joel. They were good but I have to say Billy Joel was excellent. He sounded like Billy Joel, the voice was still there and strong. His band was really really good. It was more of a rock concert than I figured from him. But the band was extremely tight. I have seen Kansas and Yes, both really good and tight bands, and I rank this concert right up there with that kind of proficiency. I have seen a lot of other concerts and they were good, but I was really impressed with Billy Joel and his band. Very good concert. If he is coming to a town near any of you, I highly recommend it and I don't really like his music all that much. It was a great concert and I had a great overall experience. Thank you to those that encouraged me to go. mspart1 point

You are right it is a matter of preference. However, continuing with your analogy, freestyle is like a ribeye, folkstyle is like a T-bone, and Greco is like a McDonald’s hamburger. At some point the product itself is limiting. Sure, you will find some people that would rather have a hamburger, and some people may have never even gotten to taste a well marbled steak. But most that are truly experienced with all three options are going to prefer a steak. And the smart ones prefer the ribeye1 point

This will mean the end of competitive D1 wrestling, not that it's actually been all that competitive for the last 20 years or so since realistically only 3 or 4 teams even have a chance of making the podium anyway. Now schools will just buy the best wrestlers. Who has the most money in D1 that has a wrestling program? Ohio State does. Michigan is 2nd among schools with wrestling programs. Coaching will be at a premium, but the little schools will all suffer. I predict over time that the rankings of the best wrestling schools will line up fairly precisely with those schools revenue with minor variations due to the ability of the coaches.1 point

Definitely non-Olympic ONLY this year in October. Four weights for all three styles. And this definitely only happened once before--in 2016. In 2020 there was obviously nothing--neither Olympics nor Worlds--so in 2021 they did both the Olympics plus a 10-weight Worlds to make up for it. Before 2016, there were always 7+ weights in freestyle and Greco at the Olympics, so nothing like this was deemed necessary.1 point

Don’t forget Jim Thorpe. A couple of Olympic gold medals (decathlon and pentathlon), and played professionally in three sports in the United States (baseball, football, and basketball). He also considered playing professional hockey, but that never panned out. At 6 feet 1 and 200 pounds, he was a solidly built athlete. Thorpe is currently in the NFL Hall of Fame.1 point
