Hopefully he makes a full recovery. He has repeatedly had to deal with tragedy and challenging circumstances throughout his life (of course his own family, but also paddock and recently sasso) and still has such a positive/uplifting perspective on life. He’s a great voice and leader in the sport. An update: https://x.com/nickcorey167/status/17831703292185603816 points

Anytime I listen to an interview with Tom I always walk away thinking to myself how fortunate his wrestlers are to have him as their leader. Thankfully it is not life threatening and that’s good news. It’s also nice to see all the words of support he’s getting from the wrestling community including in this forum. Get well soon Tom Ryan!5 points

"yOu HaVe tO Be A wOkE lEFtisT" lmao. Grow up. Maturing is realizing that not everybody has the same political views as you and them having differing opinions doesn't really impact you at all. To your point, no, I'm not left. Left is too center for me. But you can keep stroking yourself to your trump flag and using his buzzwords. Im sure that will help him win office in a few months3 points

This came too late to help Willie/@Husker_Du, but Flo will not be able to use this tactic to stop others from moving on in the near future. "The ban, which will take effect later this year, carves out an exception for existing noncompetes that companies have given their senior executives, on the grounds that these agreements are more likely to have been negotiated. The FTC says employers should not enforce other existing noncompete agreements." https://www.npr.org/2024/04/23/1246655366/ftc-bans-noncompete-agreements-lina-khan2 points

Well, it was pretty anticlimactic. I was (wishfully) thinking he may announce there’s some progress to more weights, but he really just talked about why it is the way it is. It is not about medal count, so eliminating the double bronze would not help. It is all about overall number in the sport… I believe he said it’s like 480 wrestlers across all 3 styles. Overall Olympics is capped at 10,500 but they keep going over. With all the new sports they add, they are not going to add numbers to us. He did assure us that there are like 5 sports on the chopping block for 2028 but not wrestling and we are pretty safe as a core sport. As far as solutions… he said we could add weights if we reduced the number of wrestlers in the bracket at each weight. However, that’s not going to pass because no countries would ever vote for that except a few of the top dogs because they want to get their guys qualified. So essentially no viable solutions were given2 points

If he ever finds his way back onto a college mat, there is so much potential for him to do the funniest things possible at any point. Get DQ'd in the national finals--possible. Double bird split salute in Ames--possible. Pose and flex in Cael's face after winning in BJC--possible. Get in a fight with Terry Brands during a match--possible. These are just a few of the things currently being robbed from us by (admittedly, wise), administrators. Let's hope somebody is ready to make a bad decision.2 points

18 million people watched Clark play in the NCAA finals. About 300K - 400K watched Spencer when he was in the finals. It shouldn't be that surprising to anyone.2 points

I might have missed it, but I didn't see an updated one with Parco in it, my man? As an aside for the rest of the gents... What about the smoke (I believe it was even mentioned in this thread) of Teemer going in the portal, too? Who do we think are the major players for Parco, Teemer, Endene (who is a get, mind you), and the rest of the top 33 (or so)? I imagine Michigan is alive for Flynn. Ulrey and Brady for VTech are absolutely 'gets' if they can get to the right room. They are NQ type guys, they just need to be at their optimal weight(s). Slav? Where is he going? If Michigan isn't throwing a bag at Flynn, I imagine they are with Babin or Comacho or even Rini(?) to allow Horvath another year in the room. I hope we see Derracott at UNC. He is a 'get' as well, just been behind Cardenas at Stanford. Janzer is a NQ type talent at 184 or 197, if it is the right room for him. I was hoping to see Indiana's Gilcher in the portal. I wanted him to be able to wrestle with his brother, but Michigan has now gotten Saldate at 157lbs (I was actually hoping to see Saldate venture up to 165lbs, but it appears not).2 points

The rules of Greco Roman are not ancient. There are lots of forms of grappling that don't allow any hold below the waist. It's history really starts with the modern olympics2 points

He really needs to stop the wrestling after the whistle. But I love, love, love when he hustles to the middle and sets up on the near side, forcing his opponent to go around him. Burroughs, in particular, took real exception to this. But if you buy socks without elastic, you can't expect to also get dibs after working them hose for a bit.2 points

Clark's WNBA contract will pay her $76,535 this year. That's why WNBA stars play overseas during the off-season; the salaries suck.2 points

Hopefully Amit is at full strength (and belief) at 68. She didn't look as dominant this past weekend as we've seen her. I believe she can win gold in Paris, hopefully the time until August will be to her advantage.2 points

Pretty easy answer. PSU fans booed and insulted an American legend in a neutral tournament to represent the country. Iowa fans gave Gable Steveson a standing O after he beat their guy in a college match in their building. I don’t even have to bring up PSU history for this question, but they’re going to win a “who’s worse” competition against any fan base in the country.2 points

How about any fan that goes to any event in any sport that drinks too much and acts like a jackwagon. If you shout anyone down for any reason, ride the officials, or get out of your seat to speak to the participants you are pretty much a crap fan and are embarrassing yourself and the sport.2 points

You really should watch more greco if you're going to make such statements. I watched a kid score from bottom, TWICE, in this weekend's (Olympic Trials) greco tournament. Just one example.1 point

It's tough for coaches in some sense, but my goodness is it liberating for athletes. It's so incredible that wrestling can be a legit career, dudes can do well, save money, and legit be well on their way towards a down payment or an investment portfolio before they're done with college. That is unprecedented progress by leaps and bounds for wrestling. No longer being a poor man's sport only loved by the spartan monks of the hinterlands is real progress. It does make it tough for coaches...but it also forces coaches and schools to be competitive, and will incentivize longer term relationship building from an earlier age, similar to the Asken Mizzou pipeline (and now...PSU potential pipeline). Mainly, I relish how much this defangs the NCAA. Because, pardon my language, f*@k those people.1 point

I have always been fascinated by their wrestling. They barely attend other tournaments, and the wrestlers they do send tend to be really good. I just wonder what their training is structured like.1 point

I was talking about JB being so competitive it makes him a pretty well established dick. To call taylor a competitive d-bag and then…not call jb or dake that is silly. They all showed up in the same canoe to that party. They’re all so competitive that to be anything other than the best ruins every minute of their day. We saw lots of that early on from Dake when JB beat him and everyone called him a whiner for years. But then he got a world team spot and chilled a bit…then he beat JB and became outwardly much more chill, and JB started seeming like the competitive dbag. They’ve all been this way all along, it’s just whether or not they win some tournaments esch year which determines how they behave. It’s one of the things that was so awesome about J’den, and is awesome about snyder too, they’re really composed and gentlemanly even when they lose. And, even if disappointed or angry, it is at themselves, they may express it but it is towards nobody but themselves, never at anyone else. It’s that lesson we all teach to little kids when they play sports. The irony is some of these guys are so good, they forget that lesson until they are re-taught it in their 30’s.1 point

1: agree, officials just need to make judgement calls when it's clearly abused. 2: There's like one 1-1 match per tournament with both points coming from shot clock. Not common at all. This is one of those boogey-man tales of freestyle. -Jason Bryant broke down the exact numbers from the worlds and I think there may have been 1 with no points other than shot clock. I agree it sucks when it happens but it just hardly happens. Like was said earlier "you know you're losing, go score"1 point

10 seconds is a very long time if nothing is happening. If the bottom man does not need to work for an escape he can just turtle up and wait out the clock... 20 seconds would be an eternity. Best compromise would be to let the mat wrestling continue if the top man is making progress, no one wants to seeca potential NF situation get stopped after a 20 second click expires. This puts the decision in the referees hand when to stop the mat wrestling. Not ideal but it is usually not a hard call and there can be guidelines on how much time the top man has to show progress.1 point
