  2. Starting in 2021 on TheMat, I started accumulating predictions for the Iowa v PSU dual. While this year looks a bit less interesting than the prior three years given the disparity between the teams and Iowa's latest result, I wanted to see if there is interest in tracking this again this year. If so, post your predictions here and I will assemble them alongside predictions from Go Iowa Awesome and Happy Valley Insider to come up with a wisdom of the crowds consensus pick as I have done in the past. As always there will be valuable prizes after the results are known. @Barracuda141 already got things started with his predictions in another thread on Thursday. Though since we all have more information since then, feel free to update your picks at any time up until mid-afternoon Friday. I will go next: 125: Ayala Dec over Davis 3-0 Iowa 133: Nagao Dec over Schriever 3-3 141: Bartlett Dec over Woods 3-6 PSU 149: Kasak Dec over Rathjen 3-9 PSU 157: Haines Dec over Franek 3-12 PSU 165: Mesenbrink Dec over Caliendo 3-15 PSU 174: Starocci MD over Kennedy 3-19 PSU 184: Truax TF over Riggins 3-24 PSU 197: Brooks MD over Glazier 3-28 PSU 285: Kerkvliet Pinfall over Hill 3-34 PSU I am very uncomfortable with that final score. I just do not see Iowa getting beaten that bad, but here I am. I expect Iowa to go with the 2023 Nelson Brands / any year Will Lewan strategy of committing to center control, hand fighting, blocking, relying on the CHA crowd to call for stalling on PSU before they get off the bus, and hoping to get to ride outs and win 2-1 with +1 second of RT. If they can then a number of matches could go either way. Certainly 133-165 qualify.

  4. Good teams make teams look bad. This OSU team appears to be good. From the outside I'd guess Coleman Scott has made a difference.

  5. I don't even watch the Grammys, but someone posted this and for some reason it made me cry? Tracy Chapman hasn't performed live in YEARS! Beautiful, and great respect for and from Luke Combs.

  8. And the 9 member supreme court is fully diversificated. Jews, Catholics, WASPS, Blacks, Latins, Jews (I know, it is a race and a religion), Men, Women. I do not know nor care if any of them are homosexual. I am a bit disturbed that one does not know if she is a woman or not without consulting a biologist. Not a single bit of that diversificatedness of the court members bears one whit on whether something is Constitutional or not.

  9. Yeah... it's been a tough go there. They have an Idaho kid on the roster I am really rooting for. I am hoping it works out there. He seems to love the school and the team so far. I am not sure what the answer is, but I echo. your observations.

  12. Well he is slated to wrestle Ayala, Peterson and Caleb Smith before then. If he beats them all then yes #1 seed is earned.

  13. So with 10 weights in duals it might've been 0-45. Really wish wrestlingstats still worked. Believe this was the era of different weights at the tournament. I remember coffee discussion with Ron Clinton about bumping up ~20+ lbs for NCAA Jr year (due to added wt class at tourney) and then won it the next year as Sr with a messed up hand injury.

  15. Questions: 1. Will each of you have a manager? 2. Are there stipulations in the Loser Leave Town match ie. ... hair vs hair, steel cage, texas death match, etc.? 3. If Fauxbon loses will the name "Jimmy Cinnabon" be banned from being used on the forums? 4. Can the loser come back to the territory under a mask and a new name? 5. Will this be on pay per view?

  16. 6th in 2022, thank you! NU faces some big challenges in the NIL/transfer portal era. Right now we do not have a B10 lineup. Chumbley, Mayfield (who is injured), Fisher and Bates are the only starters who are competitive. So far, only one of the freshman appears to definitely have a potentially bright future - and he's redshirting. I don't have the answers but Storny has his work cut out.

  21. From someone who was there, not a fan of either team, just a wrestling junkie. I like watching the "ins and outs" and minor 'behind the scenes' details. Coleman Scott had a notepad and pen and took notes the whole dual. Every match, he was writing things down. I'm not sure if he was writing down notes for things the OSU guys needed to work on, or scouting notes on Mizzou guys for future matches, I'm sure a combination of both. Regardless, my point is, I think the guy pays EXTREMELY close attention to detail. The kind of detail you see from someone who has a been a HC at a program that he had to work to 'rebuild' (I use that term loosely because UNC is a power 5 school). But regardless, you can tell this guy was an Olympic Bronze medalist by the attention to detail. Cowboys are in good hands with him being the future.

  22. They were 10th at NCAA as recently as 2021. This year is a result of NIL plus the transfer portal. I know Northwestern has rigid grad program standards, but don't tell me they couldn't have kept the guys around this year if there wasn't NIL offers.

  23. A few weeks ago, we took a deep dive into the 125 lb weight class and discovered that during the last six or seven years, there haven’t been “that” many elite-elite recruits at the weight class. That could be a reason for some of the chaos that we’ve seen on a weekly basis. With that in mind, I thought it may be pertinent to look at every single weight class and how their wrestlers were ranked coming out of high school. Higher or lower than 125? For this exercise, we’ve used MatScouts final Big Board rankings for each class. Not all classes had the same number of wrestlers on the Big Board, so that may lead to some unusual-looking “Not Ranked” labels from the Class of 2019. This also looks at just wrestlers who are in InterMat’s rankings as of January 30th. Rankings will be updated tomorrow to account for the action occurring over the weekend. Don’t focus on that as much as the pre-collegiate rankings. The weight class with the most “top-five” ranked recruits was, not surprisingly, 285 lbs (three). However, 174 lbs also had that same number; though two are true freshmen. Going down a notch, 149 and 165 had the most top-ten recruits (five). For shear depth, 133 and 141 had the most top-100 recruits (22). 125 lbs 1. Matt Ramos (Purdue/Minnesota) - Not Ranked: Class of 2019 2. Eric Barnett (Wisconsin) - #36: Class of 2019 3. 27. Along those lines, in the 1980 NCAA tournament, one of the 177 semi-final bouts was between Dave Allen of Iowa State and Benny Hill of Tennessee. If I'm not dating myself enough by remembering when Tennessee had a wrestling team, it's by remembering when I used to watch Dave Allen at Large and the Benny Hill Show (with Jane Leeves, later Daphne on Frasier, as one of Hill's Angels) on my local PBS channel. Wednesday nights after 10, I think. One of the commentators called the bout the battle of the English comedians, although Allen was, in fact, Irish.

  28. Ok Sate has looked really good the last month. Bringing in Coleman Scott seems to have injected life into the program. The Iowa match-up will be good. The fight for 2nd-3rd trophies will be a good one.

  29. Mizzou has zero excuses for laying this egg. At home with record crowd of 6000 plus. Oklahoma State wrestled Friday and had to travel. I was there and Mizzou got out coached and out toughed. I don't know what to expect from this team right now. Lost all the close battles and got embarrassed on their feet with a total of 2 takedowns. Mizzou coaches and bench looked like they were at a funeral. Okie bench was vocal and animated instructing and firing up their kids and it was indicative of the final score. If things don't change, it's going to be a long cold bus ride from Aims, Iowa

  34. I can’t speak for Okie States other duals but in this one it really felt like Missouri didn’t come to wrestle, rather thank Oklahoma being light out.

  35. 125: Davis (5th). Who knows at this weight. Could win! Could go 1-2! split the difference somewhat. 133: Nagao (4th) think he turns it on like SVN did last year, finishes a few more shots. 141: BB (1st) Has he been awesome? No. Has Real Woods looked much worse? Yes. 149: Kasak (6th) Kasak has a great Friday night, winning twice, before his size hurts him on Saturday. 157: Haines (1st) He doesn't look great, but are you picking anyone else over him in one match, factoring in the PSU nationals bonus? 165: Mesenbrink (2nd) I think he's just not quite positionally disciplined enough yet to beat KOT, but he's more than enough for everyone else. If he went 157 this year, the buzz next offseason would be about him being the second undefeated 4xer 174: Starocci (1st) Still that dude. 184: Truax (2nd) Penn State magic gets him to the finals, loses to Keck. 197: Brooks (1st) turns the bracket into a mockery. 285: Kerk (1st) He was pretty good before. He's taken a HUGE leap in health and consistency this year and looks to be well-above the rest of the weight class.

  37. I always felt it was a missed opportunity for MSU that they did not recruit Spartacus "Sparty" Chino. He went to Ohio U instead.

  38. Sparty loses at 197 and 285, which are two wins they expected given that they were favored there and both gents have been wrestling well.

  39. Well this certainly confirms that going to PSU makes you a better wresfler than going to another school.

  40. Ahhh, makes sense. I wouldn't risk going into Russia right now either...

  41. Why do illegal immigrant theft rings steal in New York, go to Florida to spend their loot, and then return to New York to steal some more? https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2024/02/incentives-matter.php

  42. Is going to Russia even an option? It's been on the State Department's "Do Not Travel" list since the Ukraine invasion, and I'm not aware of any USA Wrestling-sanctioned visits to Russia since the invasion, nor since Russia was barred from international competition. I'm not aware of any specific rule barring a US athlete from flying to Russia and competing, but I suspect they'd be doing it without the support of USA Wrestling.

  43. 125: Matt McDonough - 1,2,1 trumps 1,3,3 133: Logan Steiber - only two timer at the weight 141: Yianni Diakomihalis - that he went on to win four gives him the trump card over the other two timers, Dean Heil and Kellan Russell (excluding Steiber because 133) 149: Zain Retherford - obviously 157: Jason Nolf - also obviously. 2,1,1,1 trumps 1,1 even if the second 1 caused Nolf's 2. 165: David Taylor - his international success is hard to ignore even if it did not happen in the 2010's. But, given that it did happen in the 2020's a strong argument exists for he and Vincenzo Joseph tying for the title. 174: Zahid Valencia and Chris Perry - both 3,1,1 too hard to separate, so I didn't. As an aside, Carter Starocci never wrestled a single college match in the 2010's. 184: Bo Nickal - his two titles at 184 and finals win over Gabe Dean trumps Dean's 3,1,1,2. 197 J'Den Cox: Another obviously. 3 titles to Moore's zero titles in the 2010's. There are a bunch of better 197's in the 2010's than Moore (Nickal, Simaz, Kilgore, Gadson, Wright, Varner, Snyder). 285: Kyle Snyder: Captain "Obviously" America.
